This project is based on an idea that is so dumb that other than as a joke, nobody would ever try.
Keep in mind the reason he is doing this is to gain experience to do it with a bus. Not only is the bus far too heavy, it has the aerodynamics of a piece of plywood facing the wind.
Worse still, he's not going to be driving it 20 miles a day at low speed picking up kids within a limited circle, but taking it on multi-state highway speed road trips carrying vehicles. This bus is going weigh a lot. Between the weight and the poor aerodynamics, this thing is going to need A LOT of batteries.
The only good thing is, I believe, he is never going to finish the bus. The bus will be scrapped before it will be completed. He has had the bus for years and has done next to nothing on it. Next month it will be 4 years since he introduced the bus on the channel. (Mar 21, 2019). He has done almost nothing on the bus since.
His handling of the project has been terrible. He should stop taking on more projects until the bus is complete as a diesel bus. Only after all the details are worked out (assuming he finishes the bus at all) should he be considering an EV swap.

I used to be an Escape fan until I decided to buy a brand new 2018 with EcoBoost... man, what a mistake that was... it's been 6 months since I took it to the dealer with the infamous coolant leak only to find out that the actual piston head cracked, and even with the replacement engine, the thing just doesn't stop having issues. I'm selling it as I found a cheap 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis with low mileage just under $2k USD, and the thing is almost mint condition. They are selling it because gas prices, but the economy you can get from those Panther-based cars can easily match and outperform that of a current gen 2.0 4-banger turbocharged gasoline engine.

Your videos are brilliant, fun, entertaining, informative, engaging and honest!!
So many people in this genre are pretentious, condescending, secretive and arrogant. Thank you for your integrity! It really helps to see your mistakes too, where most people will hide their mistakes, you show how you learned and grew from the challenges! Keep up the great work!! 👏🏼👊🏼☺️

That sticky gooey stuff is called a thermal interface material (tim). It;s used to dissipate heat between the transistors(don't ask weather they're fets, bjts or any other kind) so that one doesn't go all the way up to 200 degrees while the others are chilling at around 50.

I thought about doing an electric swap to a car around 10 years ago and I chickened out because the parts just weren't available to have it turn out the way I wanted. So cool to see that this is actually accessible now (obviously still with a lot of effort). I might have to look into it again

@Aging Wheels Where would the traction control IO come from? Do you buy boards from some company for something like that?
Mainly asking because I wanna do the irresponsible thing one day and write my own vehicle control management software one day. I made my own (combat) tank traction control and stability code in a video game I played where everything was physically simulated. If I did it in real life I'd probably do it on like a go-kart or something so I don't actually die when I command a bonkers input from my undertested "I'm a professional how hard could it be" code.

@@monkatraz i guess it taps into some sensors for the wheel speeds, abs sensors or something.
fancier needs gyros and accelerometers to have a better model of what the car is actually doing, but you can just detect when a wheel slips with abs wheelspeed sensors with a not so fancy algorithm. you can also make a tcs then that cant' climb a slightly icy hill, but mostly working one isn't that complex in principle and companies did sell mostly working ones.

Dude you are absolutely killing it! I love this new series and the fact that you include all of the woes that are unavoidable on projects of this scale! As for that sticky coating on the IGBT modules, I've encountered that stuff on some smaller MOSFET H-bridge modules in the past, Maybe it's just a really good way of ensuring there are no low-clearance air gaps that can potentially arc over in the event dust/debris builds up on the surface. Almost like a self-healing behaviour?
