    Back in 2020 I was driving the Pacific Highway in my Tesla and thought I could safely drive past the Knockrow Supercharger and fill up at the new Maclean Supercharger that I hadn’t stopped at before. I did wonder why my car was telling me I should stop at Knockrow but ignored it. Then when I got to Maclean I learned that the recent floods had put Maclean out of action and I only had 50kms of range left.
    Searching the internet on my phone I learned that there was one NRMA charger at Grafton (46kms away). Had a very nervy drive there praying that the charger was there and was working. Had to drive around trying to locate the dam thing and the car was almost on zero when I plugged in. So relieved. Learned my lesson though.

    When I was young I ran out of petrol a couple of times. Never done it in an EV.

    On longer trips, I pack a portable trickle charger, and adapters to plug in to 3 phase sockets. In an absolute emergency, you can usually find a showgrounds or caravan park with 3 phase, or failing that, a caravan park with a normal 10amp socket and recharge (albeit quite slowly).

    It is rare for me to let any of my petrol vehicles to drop below a quarter tank, which is nominally 25%, although gauges are generally not quite linear. So having to charge at 20% is not the hardship it may seem. However, the recommendation to charge to only 80% is not comparable, as I will always fill the petrol tank to full. Range anxiety is not a thing though, as petrol stations are plentiful, and easy to find even in unfamiliar areas.
    Potentially, every house is a charging point, if you've got the domestic mains cable in the car. Slow, but will get you to the next fast charger.

    Very nice. The plethora of petrol stations versus EV charging stations is the big difference. My anxiety is tempered by planning the charging breaks, having a back-up if a chosen charger is broken or there's too long of a wait. Also, you mentioned solar... check out Aptera (EV with 600 km range but also up to 60 km of range from solar per day -- as a trickle charger). Not in production yet, but maybe later this year (a little further out for Australia, unfortunately).

    I love to run my ICE down to empty. No anxiety at all. Planning. Why refuel four times when you can do it once especially on a long trip.

    Range Anxiety used to be called,
    "Dude! Where's a Gas station, we're bout to run out of gas"
    I use my EV between 50 and 75%
    The same as gas, half a tank/battery is empty

    I was expecting you to actually show us what happens when you do run to zero kilometres!
    With a petrol car you still have 50+km... Is it the same with an EV?

      Lots of warnings telling you to charge and slow down if you ignore 1/2 an hour of alarms You will strand your self don't blame the car if their is a place with power ( even petrol stations ) you can charge and explain how stupid you were, pay them for the power at the going rate with a tip.

      Ah yeah that's an interesting one. I have been thinking about trying to test this. I watched a video on someone who ran their Tesla down to 0% and it lasted for about 5-10 minutes after 0%, driving really slow... makes me wonder if other electric cars even have a little tiny bit of juice after 0%. But you'd never want to test it in reality and always hope you plan a contingency. I think if you're to do a road trip it's best to always keep charging stops in mind so you never have less than 20% charge.

    My EV range anxiety stems from the fact that my destination public electric charger may be unavailable when I get there and the hassle I have to go through to seek an alternative. The low numbers of public chargers compared to petrol stations doesn’t help.

    • @awesomeevsguide
      @awesomeevsguide  2 дні тому

      Yeah, that's fair. I feel lucky that I haven't been driving long distances and feel I can generally rely on my local infrastructure. Hopefully within the next 2-5 years it will be less of a concern, but probably not all suburbs for a long time. However, I've heard that overseas Shell are combining their petrol stations with EV charging stations. So I wonder if it will become normal that all petrol stations have EV chargers in future.

      @@awesomeevsguide We have done BNE->SYD and back twice in the Mini Cooper SE (WLTP range of 402km, real world, closer to 300km on the highway). Generally wasn't a problem. Had a couple of potential charge stops where we diverted to a different charger because of maintenance or queues, but never got stuck anywhere for an extended period.

  • @simon-c2y

    i guess if you're stranded but you get towed the regen will fill the battery, untill you have neough range to make it to a charger... Is it different to towing a trailor though? It would be really heavy if it is putting power into the battery, but on the other hand it has got brakes, so it wouldnt be unsafe. I dont know anything about towing.

    • @dadegroot
      @dadegroot 2 дні тому

      I saw someone do this (on youtube) in America. They went through two tanks of petrol, but charged a Tesla from flat to 80% using that method.

    People have run out of gasoline for decades. I never did. It is called. If you have an ICE. Fill at 1/4. If you have an EV. Charge at 10%
    Problem solved.

  • @ematejowsky
    @ematejowsky 2 дні тому

    Sorry, I disagree.
    I have had zero range anxiety in my Ora-3 but often did in my ICE and PHEV car.
    I did run out of fuel and charge in the PHEV but was able to limp the last few klm.
    I was down to 20KPH downhill when pulled into the drive way.
    Your EV will likely go into turtle mode well before you get stuck. Some will stop before reaching zero charge but some will go 50K further.
    If you can home charge there is no need for most people to run the battery low.
    I regularly drive Brisbane to Nimbin and reverse. I use %40 charge one way. I usually have twice the charge I need for a trip and have never been below %33.
    If I did run out of juice near home I would ask a friend to bring my generator - I doubt I'll ever test that.

    Can you just make a test charge with the granny charger and show us the results. I just want to see how much of the battery percentage will be incresed during a 10 hour charge at home. If you habe dine the same, please let me know. Thanks.

      Just use maths I have a tesla m3 and before that a Nissan leaf and with a 10 amp socket at 240 volts 2.4 kwh an hour if you have a 72 kwh battery, 10 hours x 2.4 = 24 kwh 1/3 of 72 kwh so 33.33 % my 10 year old Nissan Leaf had a 24 kwh battery so 100% in 10 hours but 1/3 the range. I installed a 15 amp socket so 3.6kw so in 10 hours 36 kwh 50% but I usually set the charge to 5 amps and from 5.30pm till 8.30 am it has 15 hours so at 1.2 kw 18 kwh so 25% I usually use 10-15 % a day and have the option of cranking it up to 15 amps so 75% in the same 15 hours, I used a fast charger once when I bought the car to try it out not out of necessity cost $18 and have enough solar to run the car and house so2 years with the Leaf and Tesla $18 plus top up the tires with air and the windscreen bottle with water.

    If you could get a hold of a 2 KWhr solar battery, you could take your car battery to zero and then be able to charge it on the roadside.

    Ah the delusion…and how long will it take for a roadside service to charge your battery. Too bad if you forget to charge your battery at home. Whoops can’t drive to work on time.
    The fact remains it takes 5 minutes to fill a fuel tank and over 24 hours to charge a EV battery at home. Then how many live in high rise apartment? Then the fun and games of those characters in terrace housing with extension cords draped through trees and oh so illegally over footpaths.
    EV sales are falling in Australia and hybrids are rising.
    There’s a reason for that. Practicality and vehicle longevity mainly but host of others too such as lighter vehicles reducing tyre wear.

    Got our Model 3 down to 2% on a trip not long ago but it was the return trip with home charging available. It hadn't even started complaining and didn't feel down on power.
    I guess when it comes down to it most EVs give you good trip estimations and plenty of warnings (i know Teslas do this well). The problem is more remote driving when you get "Tritiumed" by the only DC charger in town being off line. A backup plan is needed for these drives. It will only get better though

    Rescued a Tesla driver and his family stranded beside the road in 40c heat in western NSW over Christmas. They were from Sydney attempting to visit relatives and had worked out where they would charge on their journey but got to a town with only one charger, which was out of order, as so many are. Gambled they could make it to the next charger, but miscalculated.😬
