Adam Jones told a story where he'd be playing a song and Danny would come in with his polyrhythms and time changes which would cause him to stop playing because he would forget how the song he wrote went.
This is the best TOOL song, hands down. The build up is insane and so smooth. Then the second half rolls in and bulldozes everything! When the base, the guitar, the drums, and the vocals all mesh perfectly to take you to another world....that's next level. This song is ridiculous, seriously
Aenima - the combination of Anima the feminine of the soul and enema. An enema for your soul. It also embodies Maynards love of double meaning and combining the profound with the profane!

You guys had me rolling during your intro discussion. You have a great friendship. Thanks for sharing your reaction to one of my very favorite Tool songs. It’s a masterpiece. Y’all should react to the O’Keefe Music Foundation cover of this song. They crush it. And they are all kids. So it’s rather impressive how well they play this polyrhythmic gem. Also, well done on the Black Keys mention. I love how they do just what you described in “I Got Mine”. The intro riff explodes when the beat drops. They are underrated. Stay awesome!

Fiona Apple and Tool mentioned in the same video can only mean good taste. That's my all time favourite band and my all time favorite "solo" performer.
Can’t wait to hear the fear inoculum songs reviewed. Really would be awesome to see the whole album. The full album experience is different than just skipping around. Songs with into tracks should certainly be played with the intro.
I also heard Maybard talk about getting "all the music" before writing the lyrics...but how do you explain Prison Sex? This catchy, upbeat blusey tune, and Maynard was like, "Child rape!"
It's great to see a classical composer headbangin' to a great song! I know you're wanting to bring some music from Pneuma (their latest album), but I would highly recomend "Right in Two" along the way (i have a feeling he's gonna like it). Also, WHEN you do the "Lateralus" reaction, try not to mention the Fibonacci stuff beforehand, let's see if he gets it by himself (few reactors have, despite being one of the most reacted music from them) Great video!
Yes! Fear Inoculum was released end of summer 2019! I saw them two months before that, in the Ziggo Dome in what was still my hometown by then: Amsterdam. After 13 years they finally came back and were immaculate! I cried so hard when the whole venue felt the same chills coming over at the start of Aenima and The Pot! And we got a live version of Invincible, which turned some heads as it is so different from earlier work. But man.... that was the best concert experience ever: Tool coming back style. And then at the end of the concert, Danny Carey's daughter came on stage, waving us goodbye and we all had goosebumps again #adorable
I think Pneuma and Descending will be up for the challenge. The roller-coaster was in full swing in this video, I felt every lift and drop with you, mate. Spiral out, keep going (with more Tool reactions) 🌀
This song was my initial introduction to TOOL back in the late 90’s. Still remains one of my fave tracks to this day. I had never heard a song with as much power as this before! WOW!! 💥
Yes please for the Fiona Apple! Tidal was on repeat for me all throughout highschool. She wrote and recorded that album when she was 16! Also, always happy to see more Tool!

Went to a "clinic" that Tool (minus Maynard) put on in 2017 in Columbus, basically an instrumental only mini-show (practice for their festival shows), and they talked about their writing process. They were right in the middle of recording the last album at the time. You're exactly right, Maynard gets the finished music arrangements to put words to based obviously on the overall tone of each song, which is incredible to me when you listen to Wings off 10K Days. Personally I like to hear a song first, and if it's interesting then look at the lyrics.
100% correct on the writing. Danny Carey comes up with most of the musical arrangements, the songs are written, recorded, and mixed, and only then does Maynard hear any part of the music for the first time. It's one of the reasons they have so much time between albums. Most vocalist's will work on an album during the same time period as the music, so it's all completed roughly at the same time. Tool basically has to take twice as much time to write.
Actually TOOL was like most bands and worked on the music and lyrics simultaneously. It wasn’t until after this album that Maynard started coming up with the lyrics after the music was basically done. From the mid 90s to the 2000’s TOOL got caught up in several law suits both from their issues with the record label and others suing them. So Maynard started a new band with the guitar tech who worked with Adam Jones. Maynard thought well we can’t make anything with TOOL until law suits are settled so I’ll concentrate on a new band. So he was touring with A Perfect Circle when they got the OK for TOOL to work on their next album so the band worked on the music and would send samples of it so Maynard could work on lyrics and that is when this adding the lyrics after the music was done started. Also the reason some TOOL fans hate A Perfect Circle which is an awesome band.
I've never met a TOOL fan that didn't like APC as well but then again I can totally imgaine that roughneck hickerbilly TOOL crowd not liking APC.... I was just about to step in and comment that they didn't start this formula of handing the music over to Maynard until after it was written up to the time of Lateralus, but someone else took care of that. Although I do remember Keenan saying that not all of the music are necessarily completed but that a lot are. He will sometimes when needed pickup a guitar and rearrange the song when he is firm on lyrics he wants to include.
You guys are fun. if you dig Tool, maybe look up The God Machine. They produced two intense albums in 92 and 94, then they split up after their bassist died of an aneurysm. Justin Chancellor has cited them as a big influence on his sound and style.
