I love how iconic the Dead South’s music video was for this song. Everyone covering it is practically legally obligated to film themselves in the same style.
Well, this has come full circle for me: I discovered Poor Man's Poison through Colm's cover, Poor Man's Poison lead me to The Dead South, of which Colm is now doing a cover!
I love the way you kept the feel of the original, right on down to costume and cinematography, only with the addition of your magical touch of musicianship and vocal flair. BRAVO!
That’s exactly how it felt to me. The outfits, the random scenes, the little dancing, even the raspy voice felt like a homage to my personal favorite song from The Dead South. Colm is a musical genius
I feel like this is right up Colm's alley and I'm here for it. There's a lot of cultural connection between Scots-Irish and American Appalachia. Rebels of the world unite!
Indeed, I believe that if it wasn't for the Jacobite Scots that had to flee after losing the Battle of Culloden to King George II in 1745, we Americans may have not won the War of Independence. The Scots fighting in 1776 were the sons of the men who fled Scotland. And it was the same English king. They had a score to settle.

Dude. You re-made one of the best songs and music vids! Some good Saskatchewan boys. You did Alberta with Corb Lund earlier… you are now an honorary Canadian!!!!!
Kudos for all the effort put into the video, and the singing is top tier as always...but I gotta be honest and say that Baileys stole the show. All I could think the whole time was "PUPPY!"🐕

Dear God I completely forgot about this song. It goes back to one time when I was dying in the hospital (I didn't really know it back then) and this song was on repeat. And your rendition is so amazing. You're awesome!
I think what sets the Dead South version of this song high amongst my affection is the control of the breaking point. While the boys are good singers, they ain't perfect singers. It's using the rough edges in their art. And that's what I appreciates of it.
I am so excited to see this cover!! Loved this song from day one and your performance just makes me love it more and more. Such a snappy (lol) song, fun and makes the foot tap. Thank You Colm.... got you on Spotify playlist and this is added!
I love the dead south, I went to see them in concert this year! I'm still impressed by the fact that, even in the last 3 years that I've been following you, you find a way to do covers of my favorite songs without me (maybe even "we" - I don't usually read the comments of your videos) asking you to. For once, let me give you some ideas for future covers: "The Girl and the Clockwork Dragon" by The cog is dead or "Joli Rouge" by The Dreadnoughts. Thank you very much for this work !
Me: I've liked every cover from Colm More than the original but this is like one of my favorite songs. How can he outdo it? Colm: starts singing Me: * jaw Hits the floor
Recognised the style of the original video as I moused over it and was kind of confused why it was suddenly "Oops, all Colms!" So yeah, I think you did a great job keeping the original feel of both the song AND video.
now that you’ve done more strum-y stuff… i’d love to hear you cover Wayfaring Stranger! i love the versions from 1917 and Hayde Bluegrass Orchestra, but i predict you’ll come up with an amazing third variant
I still have a few decades of life ahead, but I can confidently say that you are among the top 10 vocalists that I have ever heard. To me you are on the level of Pavarotti or Mercury. Oh, and please come to Washington state on your next tour. I am tossing my friends links to your greats, and it would be spectacular if you could ever come to the green and pleasant lands of the Olympic peninsula.
Oh HELLS YES!! One of my all time favourite songs, and you improved on it with your gorgeous voice. Thank you for covering this one, if it gets added on Spotify this will become a regular listen for sure (probably here too though xD). Hope you're keeping well Colm, so awesome seeing you do so much awesome stuff!
Awesome as always. Your vibrato, dynamics and pitch accuracy in the whistle outdid the original. I like that you kept the growl in the lyrics, a fitting tribute to an iconic song.
Colm my man I love you, platonically of course, and I wish for a lot more songs in this style. I think youve got a great voice for things like blue grass, but i gotta take away points for not being IN the fountain my man.
Wow, I learned a lot from watching this. I learned about a Canadian folk band that I'd probably like, I learned that you can play a cello like a bass guitar, and I learned what Colm looks like from top to bottom. Keep 'em coming, handsome! P.S. I'm sure we'd all like some more Bailey cameos in the future.
Should I do any more folk songs?
Stay egregiously handsome!
I'd love to see you cover Curse of The Fold by Shawn James, I think you'd pull it off really well.
I would love to see more bluegrass! This cover is awesome!
I feel like you could make a great rendition of Tonic's "Mountain" from their "Lemon Parade" album.
I would really love to see you cover either From Now On from The Greatest Showman or Yurgen's Tune from Wingfeather Saga. God Bless :)
I would love to see you do more Dead South, I think Black Lung would be amazing by you
I love how iconic the Dead South’s music video was for this song. Everyone covering it is practically legally obligated to film themselves in the same style.
and the original was done on such a shoe string budget too
It's unironicly one of the simplest but hard hitting music videos ive seen in a while. It's just so satisfying to watch
I performed it on stage recently. At a minimum I tried to match the finger snapping.
Mumford and ok,go.
I agree. Any deviation should be met with harsh repurcussuions.
Of all the libraries in all the towns in all the world, he dances in front of mine. Everything this man does is golden.
Fellow Monrovian?
Let’s go Myrtle!
I freaked out the moment I saw him in Library Park! This is amazing to see!
Intentional Casablanca reference?
Well, this has come full circle for me: I discovered Poor Man's Poison through Colm's cover, Poor Man's Poison lead me to The Dead South, of which Colm is now doing a cover!
Same
same for me as well, same order thats wild lol.
Heh
Poorman's Poison owe Colm some Whiskey 😂
If you want to break the cycle... try... port sulphur band, Christian Larsson, or The Steeldrivers.
I love the way you kept the feel of the original, right on down to costume and cinematography, only with the addition of your magical touch of musicianship and vocal flair. BRAVO!

It looks like Colm is just going on a happy little walk to the local library and just happily singing to himself along the way
I think Colm just knows how to play every instrument
Agreed
What do you mean? It’s a big guitar without any frets
I guess, when he's bored after learning all instruments, he goes into his shed and invents three new instruments
real life bard that min/maxed instrument proficiencies and performance expertise
Well he is a professional composer, they generally know how to play a lot of instruments.
The Dead South could take you on tour with them and no one would know you weren't just part of the band.
He'd have to go back to his beard era but he'd be a great fit
@@arandomjonathan04 and done coffin ship era cloths on top
He'd just have to follow Colton and *never* speak. He does that, he gets away with it.
Colm has gotten so much more comfortable being in front of the camera! I remember when all he’d do was stand (or sit) and sing/play.
More The Dead South covers PLEASE!!!

I HAVE NEVER CLICKED A VIDEO SO FAST- Dead South was the last thing I expected you to cover but holy fuck did you knock it out of the park(as usual, good sir)!
Soon as I saw the video I thought "yeah that sounds like something he'd nail" and I was right
A full music video- gams out? For FREE? Yer spoiling the masses, Colm!
When I’m not injuring them/the rest of myself 🙏🫡
This man is too freaking good at ... everything music!😂
and that’s how we learned that this brilliant man also has a built-in distortion pedal for his voice. great use of a trip to the states!
Dude. You re-made one of the best songs and music vids! Some good Saskatchewan boys. You did Alberta with Corb Lund earlier… you are now an honorary Canadian!!!!!
He's done some Stan Rogers, too! Wonder if we can get a rendition of Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald?
He's also done an Alan Doyle song and a Dreadnoughts song. Now, I'm just patiently waiting for him to cover Spirit of the West.
At this point I'd listen to this guy sing the phonebook and I'd probably still add it to my playlist.
i'm a simple man, i see colm post, i like the video, no questions
Glad it's not just me 🙏
This is the way
Holy crap! That's my home town's library.
Great town! 🤌
@@ColmRMcGuinness Thank you for your kind words.
Seeing the cello in that position gave me a small panic attack until I saw it's all save and not just floating in mid air
The fact that you reproduced some part of the cinematography is the cherry on top

Is there any genre you're not good at, Colm? You're a grossly understated musical genius.
I wanna see him do something like duality or paranoid
I was in love with the original, now im obsessed with THIS one!
I glanced at the thumbnail and thought, "Hey, that reminds me of the Dead South." Then I read the title and was like, "Oh my!"
It’s like you’re covering my favorites from my playlist I’ve accumulated over the years :,)

After only hearing the original recently, and then seeing you do a cover of it, I am just bewildered... amazing work as always Colm!
oh my gosh, this has unlocked how much I loved this song again
Whoa - I’m not sure I’ve ever heard your voice with this kind of growl before. It’s niiiiiiiiice!
Those Match-cuts were smooth and your artistry is always top notch! A great cover that's sure to put pride in the hearts of the originators.
Thanks for your very good job for this old song mémory !
My God! He has vibrato in his whistle!
Your Voice fits to the Song like a Glove. Love the Original but i will listen to yours every once in a while. Thank you for all your great Adaptations

What a great video, dude. You're literally a team of one man.
I had to remind myself who I was listening to for a second there. It's easy to forget you can do those low growling vocals too
The opening always reminded me as appropriate for old spaghetti Westerns.
I saw Dead South a few months ago in Germany. I guess now it's time to see Colm somewhere.
I love the Dead South.
What a great rendition!
Colm looking dapper as always
The Old Therebefore would be beautiful in your voice!
So looking forward to seeing him Live! Portland, OR Sept 27th. 🎉🎉 Love you Colm, sorry but we'll be there for you not the Longest Johns.
Oct 2 in San Francisco for us, can't wait for the show
I hope this is a trend. Love their songs and you're doing this one perfect.
This is incredible! One of my favourite artists covering another of my favourite artists! It's like Christmas!
