Love these guys. Their covers of The Doors "People Are Strange" and "You Are My Sunshine" (Louisiana's State song) are outstanding.
I hadn't really understood just how dark "You are my sunshine" is until I heard their cover.
@@zelest And this rendition just makes seem even darker.
They also cover Chop Suey by System of a Down. It's so good.
@@zelestyes please
Another great cover they do is "House of The Rising Sun"
I've loved this song for years, especially the cello part. Using a cello as the bass/rhythm guitar is incredibly creative and he holds down a great groove.
I was under the impression that the bass guitar was developed as a carry-on version of the cello and/or the bass, when amplifiers became widespread, and the big sound board was no longer necessary. Jazz and Swing bands still use the bass or a cello instead of a bass guitar.
@@SiqueScarface It was developed as a smaller version of an upright bass, with the same range, to allow bassists to move around onstage. The cello is tuned somewhat higher than a bass. It intersects with the bass range, so it can fulfill that function. It just can't go quite as low.
This song is 10 times better than anything Taylor Swift ever did
Every time I listen to this song, it feels like the first time. It just pulls you in starting with the bass laying down a rhythm followed by that great banjo roll. You feel like bobbing along when these dark minor vocals kick in with a little dance. It’s so absurd that you can’t help but smile. Such a brilliant song.
My 4 yr olds absolute favorite song, he can be mid tantrum and hears the whistling and he immediately starts trying to snap his fingers. Loves the cello, and banjo.
I think it would work on me as well!
IMO One of best bands of last few years and live they sound soooooo good :)
I can't wait to see them again later this summer in Leipzig!
I'm not sure why, but this song/band (I only really know them for this song) always reminds me of the song "Anthem for the Already Defeated" from the movie "The Battery". If you've never heard of it, both the movie and song are worth checking out.
Yes, I wouldn't call those vocals beautiful, but they are strikingly different - this band isn't trying to look like or sound like everyone else and it just works - love everything about this song and the video.
I didn't realize we were talking about what was beautiful, because then I'd agree with you, and it's not that that I think they even really sound that similar, just more that I get like the same vibe from them that's very hard to actually describe.
The dead South rabbit hole goes deep.
They don't have a single meh song,
I've loved this song from the first listen. I love the odd but compelling voice of the lead singer, and I love their dance moves. It's just so incredible!
Much of the video is filmed in Toronto, some parts within a short walking distance of my apartment. The CN Tower is clearly visible in some shots. The part you thought was New York is near the Yonge & College subway station, where I am just about to go for lunch after viewing this. Other parts are filmed in the Canadian Prairie Provinces. The band is from Regina, Saskatchewan, and so is the production company, Two Brothers Films, which made the video --- but they film in many locations. Toronto is a major film production centre. The director of this remarkable video is Zach Wilson.
This song introduced me to the Dead South and it is absolutely killer. Seen it many times and read many comments, but the video is hardly mentioned. The recording and editing is awesome. Watch it again and see how well the different cuts line up. No easy feat.
@@robertarisz8464thanks for the heads-up, thought it looked familiar! Also pretty sure the music shop is Amoeba Records and the old timey bar is Comstock Saloon, both in San Francisco.
The video seems to be filmed mostly in Regina and areas outside of the City with Toronto a secondary location and a few shots from inside Great Western Brewery as part of the Original 16 Brewery Sessions series. (look it up for great early Colter Wall and Dead South songs) The record shop is Vintage Vinyl and Hemp Emporium, the fountain is at Regina City Hall, the stream is Wascana Creek, the rural areas are someone's canola field likely a few miles from Regina, there are shots taken in the city's downtown area - but some of the more interesting city shots appear to be in Toronto.
Black lung from The Dead South would have been a perfect song to listen to.
I love Black Lung
@@MadAnthonyINot a phrase often said.
@@That_Guy5575 good point! I didn't realize how that sounded....lol.
The Dead South guys have the #1 cousin-lovin song out there...
Spaghetti is also really good
Definitely another vote for checking out their rendition of "You are my Sunshine". It's....haunting....
The video was shot in bits and pieces on location in various parts of Canada. I recognize city locations from Saskatoon, Regina, Winnipeg and Toronto. And possibly Brandon, Manitoba too. On top of that, there are prairie landscape shots near canola fields and streams. And, of course, a record store and many hotel rooms.
The vinyl place is Vintage Vinyl in Regina
Did they really go to all those places or is it all green screen shoots?
I just found a FB post from Two Brothers films. I was wrong about the locations other than Regina and Toronto. All of the shots are live, and as a different person commented, if it wasn't for some of the bystanders bopping in time to the music it would look like green screen work. To be fair, ordinary neighbourhoods in Regina, Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Brandon look a lot alike, so I was fooled.
@@tessjuelthey actually went there.
@@CandyxKushcould only be more Canadian by being the vinyl cafe.
"Harmony can be whatever you want it to be..." I love that. Music is always a personal thing, and if you're lucky others will like it too.
I so love this song. They can harmonize so well together, and I love watching the video every so often.
Never heard of these guys but better late than never. The music (especially the bass line and banjo part), instrumentation, lyrics, and vocals really complement each other nicely. Well done!
I love that you finally got to these guys and I really encourage you to do more of their songs, they have plenty of live shows as as well as produced
Absolutely loved that you did this, after first hearing this on release they very quickly became one of my favourite bands, and after seeing them live numerous times I love every song they have done, as always fantastic content from you, thank you for all your hard work.
For those not in-the-know this is a very traditional folk style song known as a "Murder Ballad" and is indeed a folk tale as she described. The most recognizable murder Ballad is Stack-O'-Lee aka Stagger Lee which was covered by darrn near everyone during the Blues-Rock era.
.....and The Clash added their flavour with Wrong em boyo

Great reaction, as usual. Also, love your Wicked Game cover. It’s in my “New faves / Faves’ new” playlist if anyone wants to hear what other songs it hangs out with. 🙄
Listened to and thought it was just great( and brave to try that song as it's not easy I know used to sing it as well )
I love your work, both reactions and your singing. Thank you for sharing your insight with us, truly. As I have not been able to find it, I would like to suggest Nazareth for a reaction and possibly a cover. Either "Please Don't Judas Me" or "Love Hurts" would be amazing places to start. Above all, be well.
The Dead South are one of my favorite home grown bands. But funny enough they are more famous in Europe than they are in Canada.
Your cover is amazing. Truly beautiful voice.
Proud of our boys getting some recognition
They have an amazing cover of "You're my sunshine", if you want to hear it. They're so good!
Awesome seeing these guys really start to take off. This song was pretty big in canada for the past couple years.
Have loved this band since I first heard this song.I am 40+ years a Metalhead but The Dead South's music transcends to anyone's music tastes flawlessly. Whether it's their original songs or covers, they own it with style. I could see this band opening fir #ironmaiden and absolutely killing it. Please someone in the #ironmaiden camp make this happen 🤘🏻🇬🇧🖤
Have you heard frog leap studios metal version it's brilliant
@@DanKeeley No. I will check it out now. Thanks.
@@DanKeeley Absolutely brilliant. Love Leo's 'Metal Versions' Thanks again fir the suggestion 🤘🏻🇬🇧🖤
@@russellhamilton8903 yeah especially when he metal's up existing heavy songs, brilliant - check out creep too, just AMAZING
Thank you for your insight. I got hooked by this band/group years ago, and I loved your observations. I extra love your positivity. Thank you again.
I’ve followed the Dead South for years. Glad you liked them!
Heard them live right before Covid hit, was a great show. Honey You is my favorite of theirs.
how bout banjo odyssey ;) lol. one my favorite songs of thiers and its not as well know is Deep when the rivers high!
I saw them in desmoines. Killer show. I got all 3 vinyl they had for sale and I got them signed by one of the opening bands haha. Our party bus left during the last song tho so I could not get it signed by the dead south themselves.
I LOVE their simplicity, and I absolutely prefer the sound of a wooden instrument over an electronic tone. They could drop down just anywhere and perform, no light show, fire, or electronic effects! I'm a folk fan, and enjoy their voices. YES! Like sitting around a campfire. One-on-one, personal.
Excellent reaction. The Dead South have some great songs and are well worth the time to do reactions to them.
Scott's vocals always compliments Nate's gruff vocals. It was nates vocals that I fell in love with. I was fortunate to watch them live this past February
I heard this song a while back and really enjoy their style. Bluegrass rocks! Thanks for reacting to it Beth! I also love your cover of Wicked Game as well. One of my way back favorites🥰
Bluegrass does indeed rock. This isn't bluegrass though. It's a cross between oldtime and roots. And it also rocks.
@@professornuke7562 Works for me. Great song at any rate. Thanks for the reply.
So cool ya found them, 😎 I've loved them for a couple of years now, glad they are being seen.
I love the Dead South. Absolutley cracking band live and really good on record.
The Dead South is one of my favourite group. And the first song that I listened to from them and made me hooked to them is In hell I'll be in good company. I've never really cared for Bluegrass before, but this group is so good. "Broken Cowboy" is one of my favorite songs from them, but really, all their songs and covers are excellent. I hope I can see them live someday.
Thank you, I loved this reaction and the sound of these guys is quite unique. The video clip dance is a highlight for me 😁
You need to take a look at Steve'n'Seagulls if you like the odder versions of stuff like this one. Start with Thunderstruck (it only has only 159Million hits). Or from The Dead South I recommend "Love Is Strange"
One of the best songs of Death south, a fantastic band. Despite the lyrics, the song makes you very happy, love it
I stumbled last year onto this group and loved it. Stumbling onto music or groups you never encountered is one of the absolute benefits of a site like UA-cam. As soon as you hear something you like, you can search on for the same group or similar kind of music. I love those search adventures
On the other hand I hope you will stumble one time into the fascinating world of the Afro Celt Sound System, thats a journey worth watching and especially listening
I love how passionate you are about music. If you ever have a chance to see them perform, Please, I beg you, avail yourself of the opportunity!!
A fantastic band to see live. Such excellent energy.
Discovered these guys about a year ago and I'm from Canada never heard of them before but damn they're good. :-) :-)
Randomly came across these guys a while back via this song and I was pleasantly surprised not just with the song but the fact that they're from Regina, Saskatchewan where I spent over a decade living. Also the cellist doesn't always get to tour with the band because of his day job as an engineer. Probably the best song I've heard from them, and one of my favorites, is Broken Cowboy.
I enjoy listening to them, that whistling is is next to impossible😂
First time I heard this a few years ago. I thought so simple and broken down to the basics. Just a pure form of music. Anywhere and second.
They did an interview with a festival in Denmark & talked about the lyrics & the recording of this video! The guy with short hair about got his head knocked by that big truck’s mirror that drove by so close!
I just love this group. Bluegrass? Blues? Folk? Country? It's everything. I love the voices. And as if all that isn't enough, they're Canadian (Regina, Saskatchewan). Thank you.
I’ve been on 2 cross-country (USA) road trips and did event planning for my university after graduating and getting to fly all around the country, this video REALLY feels like that very specific feeling and it’s incredible!
They sound great live! Saw them last Year.
About two years ago this song appeared in my UA-cam suggestions. I was thinking acoustic Metal maybe? I never listened to it. One day a few months ago I gave in and played it. Not what I expected , much better
There's many names for what these guys are doing: Southern Gothic, Gothic Americana, Dark Americana, Dark Country, Deathgrass. Whatever you call it, it's just good shit. Nothing beats a good old murder ballad
Ironic Bluegrass
Great Band! Great Track! Great Reaction!!!! Thank You so Much ✌
Tune: 😀😃😃😀
Lyrics:👹💀💀👹
This is such a great tune. I also love your cover of Wicked Game - listen to it often! Appreciate ya Beth!
You should listen the acoustic live version of the song "Broken cowboy". Amazing harmonies!
Soooo good. Love it.
Should do Broken Cowboy. Love that song. Especially a live version of it.
Love the way the cello is used as a bass. Works for me. !!!
Really when I heard this song for the first time I felt like I was around a campfire just like you said!!! I think this song in particular conveys that feeling that seems be universal!!! I say this because I'm from Brazil and, even here, the feeling I had was the way you described it.
Sensational video... Congratulations!!! ❤❤❤
One of the best live shows I’ve gone too!!! The come to the UK a fair bit, be sure to go check them out!
I love this song and especially this video... so much.
Great song some of it was in Toronto where I've been and Edmonton among many other in Canada
One of my favorite bands. I love southern gothic/dark bluegrass.
These guys came up on a Pandora channel I listen to and I can't get enough of them. That Bastard Son is my fave.
Dead love couldn't go no further
Proud of, and disgusted by her
Push, shove, a little bruised and battered
Oh Lord, I ain't coming home with you
My life's a bit more colder
Dead wife is what I told her
Brass knife sinks into my shoulder
Oh babe, don't know what I'm gonna do
I see my red head, messed bed, tear shed, queen bee, my squeeze
The stage it smells, tells
Hell's bells, miss-spells, knocks me on my knees
It didn't hurt, flirt, blood squirt, stuffed shirt, hang me on a tree
After I count down three rounds, in Hell I'll be in good company
this repeated twice. and she attacks him. this is call dark country and there is a whole world of it
Small correction. All the locales are in Canada :-)
Never heard of them. I love it. Thanks for turning me on to new music!(for me)
A lot of the locations in the video outside of city areas can be found just about anywhere in Saskatchewan which is where these guys are from.
Hi Beth, it is always a great pleasure to see you react like a little girl enjoying new toys. Kepp it that way. You really enjoy those video reactions and so do we
Nate Hilts sings the first vocal, Scott Pringle sings the high vocal, Danny Kenyon plays the cello and sings the verse and Colton "Crawdaddy" Crawford plays the banjo.
If you want to hear him sing then my fav from them is Broken Cowboy (great story telling too)
Been a fan for several years now, great group that is highly under rated.
Just seen them last month at the Ryman!! What a show! What a Venue!
I forgot about them ... Welcome back!
they are absolutely amazing live
Broken Cowboy is their best song BY FAR
So back in the before times, I was walking through the local supermarket and started whistling this song. From the next aisle over I hear somebody else whistling along, then another person joins in from the aisle on the other side of me. I walk to the end of the aisle with the other whistlers keeping pace in their aisles. We get to the end of our respective aisles, look at each other and start doing the snap-n-strut for a few beats then we all stop and go on about our business. Not a single word spoken, just a nod of understanding.
The dead south group on fb just played this. So I came here to say hi!!
Love this song. Berried treasure. Thanks for picking such a song that isn't so popular. Liked your reaction.
Remember one of their firs5 concerts in Germany in a small pub in Hamburg 40 spectators including me . Now they are filling large areas.
My brother turned me on to these guys and as a dead head / folk music lover these guys just get it done!
They just released a new album and sweetly calmly is so good
You really have to react to the Bridge City Sinners next! "Song of the Siren", "Witches' Wrath" and "Devil Like You" would all be great choices.
I am fairly certain most of this was filmed in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. You can see the CN tower in the background a bunch and a lot of the areas are super familiar to me. Those Green P parking signs and the Pizza Pizza on the corner were basically my 20's.
I live in the neighborhood where most of this was filmed
Its such a happy little song... until you pay attention to the lyrics... WOW! That's some serious emotional juxtaposition!
The one guys voice reminded me a lot of the guy that sang "Devil Wears A Suit And Tie". Sooooper gravely!
Fun choice Beth!!! 🥰
For some reason this became a song that gets played every Christmas in my house..no idea why.
this band on my playlist! some funny lyrics! I been fascinated by a song, composed by a Brazilian composer named Accioly Neto, sung by hundreds of singers. its called "espuma ao vento, foam to the wind" and this is probably my favorite version of it, It's the Ney Mato Grosso interpretation. It's awesome, so clean! the man is in his 80's and still singing! check it out! the poem is something else too! totally worth knowing this piece! So many versions of this tune in many different voices and styles!
The best description of Nate Hilts vocals I've ever heard was "honey and broken glass"
its so awesome these boys were on my couch as this video hit the millions of views
Literally choose them on Spotify and hit random. Never disappointed.
Love love love these guys.😅❤❤❤
This s😢ong reminds me of the Rocksteady number, "Draw Your Brakes", by the singer, Scotty, off of The Harder They Come album....thanks for turning me on to the music of some fellow Canadians...they really do raise some interesting crops in Saskatchewan. Fun fact: Jack Bruce, the great Scottish bass player for the Cream was classically trained on the cello.
This song is my go to Karaoke jam!!!! Fantastic Canadian band!
these guys are great some great videos of them live here on youtube
I love these guys. It just occurred to me that one of the places where they filmed (with all the yellow flowers) reminds me of one of the opening shots of the Corner Gas movie. I wonder if it's the same place. These guys are from Regina, after all.
I love them. Beth, I like your analysis too!!
This is called Dark Grass. It hails back to some of the oldest Bluegrass like Knoxville Girl which was a redo of Oxford Girl from England. Everyone seems to miss that he kills his wife but she got him with the brass knife through the shoulder and he is bleeding out and in 3 rounds he will join her in Hell.
Someone commented that the first singer's voice was a mixture of broken glass and honey.
You need to hear/watch "You Are My Sunshine" by Dead South.
Hi--I did get my voice back. It's deeper now, so singing along with The Dead South is a LOT of fun.
(Also, in case you were wondering, the field of yellow flowers is canola/rapeseed. My college degree is in agronomy.)
Love your vibe Beth. Hope you are well and life is fulfilling.
Glad you listened to them. Awesome songs. You have got to listen to "You are my Sunshine" Epic
I know a guy who was fortunate enough to see them at Red Rock. I'm very jealous.
