- The Mazda MX-5 Miata is pure sports car concentrate. The RF is the heavier and better looking version. Whichever Miata you go with, you'll be treated with THE BEST driving experience south of $35,000. In this video I break down my personal likes and dislikes that I have with the 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF.

Today is my birthday. Took the day off. Pre-approved for the zero% financing. Test driving a GT today and unless anything goes wrong, I'll be an MX-5 owner in a few hours.
Happy birthday! Good luck with the deal!
Happy birthday! Sounds like a good birthday plan to me!
@@ShiftingLanes I bought the grey GT :)
@@advres Did you get the hard top or soft top? How is it so far? mpg? quiet/noisy? etc?
@@t.k.morris I went with the ragtop. I wanted the typical convertible. I love the thing. I've been bouncing around between 32-36 MPG depending on the type of roads and how much of a jerk I'm being driving it. I went 330 miles on a tank of gas and thought I was going crazy when I only used about 9 gallons. I haven't filled up for less than $20 since I was 17 years old. I have only driven with the top down so there is obvious noise. It's my second car so it only goes out when the weather is nice :)
I purchased a 2020 RF a couple of months ago and totally agree with your review. I love how the car makes me feel like no other I've ever driven (Smiles per mile). This is my daily driver. I commute 100 miles per day to and from work and I get around 40 mpg (around 36 mpg if I want to drive more aggressive). What I do not like are all the rock chips on the hood and bumper. I should have put some vinyl wrap when I first got the car. The volume and info control knobs on the center console are a bit tricky to reach since they are situated so far back. The cup holders do seem like an afterthought. I have nowhere to put my sunglasses so I use the cupholder to store the on the passenger's side. However, there is more to love than hate for this amazing car. I am so glad I made the purchase.
I bought a 1.5 four months ago as fun car for weekends only. Now I'm so addicted to this wonderful toy that has got the everyday's car. Just one regret: now I'm 63 yo, should have buyed before...
Greetings from Italy
I bought mine 2 weeks ago and absolutely love it!
I'm trying to get the rf club with soul crystal red!! Need 6k more for a 10k down payment!! Wish me luck!!
Good luck Stevie!
I bought MINE 2 weeks ago too, and also absolutely love it! 😂
Lucky!!!😂
I bought it and have zero regrets. This car is made with passion and attention. Built with purpose in mind. Its all about driving excellence, and they nailed. A traditional recipe that has always connected drivers to the road with full control and precision that's as sharp as a scalpel ! ND2 offers just the right amount of horse power to go zoom without sacrificing fuel economy and as a bonus allows for cheap insurance. Low low cost of ownership because these cars are very reliable. Basically a fun car made EXACTLY how it SHOULD BE !
How safe do you feel inside it? I have a mazda6 2018 and its a huge car compare to this. I was thinking about test drive Miata. The size scares me though. I wonder how safe you could be inside such a light and small car?
@@elmaav3542 there are videos on UA-cam showing they meet crash standards well. Solid car. And self confidence in your own driving and the ability to zip out of the way, you should be good .
Is it your daily driver?
@@devinadas3347 it is not. But it could be if you wanted it to and you don't have the need to carry more than one person with you and you shop for one or 2 people. Just buy the soft or hard top based on your environment. If you make it your daily driver then life would be pretty good for you as far as driving goes. Also its low to the ground so keep that in mind. Cheap on fuel and reliable and lots of fun. Great car !
@@WizardTerence I live in Canada so I was wondering how well it would do in winter. Thank you for replying!
I just bought a 2020 MX-5 Club Edition manual Soul Red soft top. It gets an average of 32 mpg. I sealed the rag top with 303 Fabric Guard outdoor fabric protectant (It has UV-ray resistance and the water droplets bead up and slide off). Then I installed OEM rubber floor mats and a trunk liner. Because I live out on a highway I get to enjoy the sound of that terrific engine in every gear. I’m a recently retired science teacher and this is my treat for me and my husband turning 65. My granddaughters are now thrilled for the different days when I pick them up from school. My other vehicle is a 10 year old VOLVO XC60. Guess which car my family wants me to never to sell 🚘.
They don’t depreciate that much!
Congrats and enjoy!
Picking ours up tomorrow. 100th anniversary edition ! RF MX-5 Miata Manual GT. Thanks for the review!
How are you getting on with it ?
Excellent review. I bought one six months ago and find it is the most enjoyable car I’ve ever driven. More satisfying and fun than my M3 convertible was. It is a real sports car because I find the longer way to go anywhere while driving it.
Learned to drive stick on a miata first. Best training car to figure out the physics of driving.
I just taught my coworker to drive stick in my old NB2. I'll let him run the ND when he has a bit more polish, but like you said, just an excellent car to teach and learn on. He learned tremendously fast, in two hours was both putting around town *and* we were using the local megachurch parking lot for God's true intended purpose... sideways burnouts.
Jokes aside, everything is so much easier to explain on the car where everything just automatically makes perfect sense.
You know someone has put together a good review when they have approaching 300 likes to 1 dislike despite not once having the engine sound or anything..
Just bought the 22’ with the FM package!! Absolutely love it
The right answer is yes. Just make sure you get the M/T. So fun and connected!
LOL at 4:33 Is that the title to the vehicle crumpled up in the suspension? LOL!
We got the 2019 Grand Touring Gt-s, and we chose the ragtop rather than the RF for three reasons: 1) the only Gt-s available within 500 miles of our house was a ragtop; 2) we like the looks of the ragtop better up or down, and 3) our neighbor bought the RF and says that, with the top down, there is far more wind noise inside than in the roadster.
Congrats and enjoy!
light weight cars handle so good they make normal cars feel like sh. it's like go carting every day.
actually u nailed it there about the gocarting
I drove a NB Miata back in 2002. Auto journalists don’t exaggerate how much fun it is to drive one of these little convertibles.
Bought a soul red crystal 2020...rd-gt....great car
although back in my country my dad have a 991 C2S and a C190 AMG GT that i have an opportunity to drive it sometime, but i am still now consider to buy a Miata. this car is just different than most of the car on sale today. which is awesome and Miata Is Always The Answer haha
You made my mind up !
if i could go back in time i would have gotten a soft top club without the add ons and got wilwood big brake kit and aftermarket seats and wheels. spirited driving was getting 35 mpg. after boost 22 to 25
I use ND2 soft top as a daily and S60R as a witner/ long trips tool
My friend has an old NA Miata and that thing is so much fun I just wish I fit. I test drove in an ND when they first came out and sadly don’t fit very well in that either.
Check ND2 with recaro seats. You seat lower and due to the telescopic regulation you can pułk the steering wheel. I am 6 foot 2.5 and I am comfortable ina soft top. I was struggling in the ND1 on leather seats as well
Michał Koperwas I’m guessing an RF is out of the question with the recaro seats? Only soft top?
Rex Volvo You would have to check yourself. I have not tried. Each body is different. We might be same hight, bit you could have longer legs or torso. Some tall people who tried RF say that I wouldn’t fit. Anyways, for my RF was out of the question due to the noise buffeting ar higher speeds and roof operation tome comparison to 2s in the sof top
Michał Koperwas gotcha. Yeah I’m not that tall I think it’s mostly a long torso that makes it hard because I either have to lean back for my head to be good but then legs get in the way of the wheel or I sit straight up comfortable but then my head sits high. So the seat height may be the solve.
Regarding your legs colliding with the wheel. Did you try 2019+ version? I cannot fit to the prefacelift due to nontellescopic regulation. This 2019+ implementation was a big game changer for me
How to not like it when you own an NB-FL? I just prefer it in red!
Couple of pre purchase questions for you:
How are the seats? My current WRX is super comfortable and I can drive hours without any lower back fatigue. What are your thoughts on the Miata?
Other reviewers say the RF has a lot of wind noise behind your ear, what are your thoughts?
I just traded my 2018 wrx for a 22 miata soft top. I personally feel the seats are comfortable, but I haven't done any long drives. I think for a long road trip I'd probably want a larger car with more space/storage and better noise insulation. I find that it is much more enjoyable driving around town on local streets than the wrx, but highways are kinda meh because you need to be going 70-80mph to get a satisfying driving experience on the freeway and in the miata you need to either stay in a low gear where the engine is screaming and vibrating like crazy at that speed, or drop into 5th/6th gear where you get zero power. So I find myself just taking local roads everywhere.
I've owned plenty of high horsepower cars and my wife's 19 RF with the GTS package is near the top of my list of fun cars. You're correct...the infotainment sucks (sounds good though). What a blast in the curves!
Slow car fast is more fun than fast car fast
@Jonny K who said anything about need? You don't "need" indoor plumbing, but it beats shitting in a hole in the backyard.
I'm debating...either get this as a second car or trade in my civic hatch for the mk8 golf r once it comes to the US
Can you try and give me a comparison between the two? What is good or bad about the RF or Soft Top? I need to decide which one to buy. Which is the better value or anything that would help me to decide? Thanks..
If you need daily it or planning to put some highway miles, get the RF. If this is your weekend warrior with less highway, than ST is the way.
Can’t find the red colour on the Mazda website.
i had an nc and loved it but had to sell it. this nd is a great continuation but i don't like the huge front wheel gap. and if they'd just upgrade the infotainment as you said...
A set of $2-300 performance lowering springs from Flying Miata or Goodwin racing will take care if the fender gap and body roll without sacrificing ride quality
I’m a 24 year old girl who drives and Jeep Wrangler and am getting rid of it due to so many problems. Do you recommend the Miata as a daily driver car in FL? If so, which year and model/make?
It won't be as practical as the Wrangler and is much lower to the ground. But it is pure joy to drive, reliable and any 2005 - 2020 models would be great. Some of them come with a removable hardtop which would work better for FL rain conditions. Good luck and definitely test drive one if you get the chance.
The ND starts from 2016. Any year Miata is great but if you’re looking for a fairly new car than the ND is the key. 2019 and newer models have greater HP among other additions.
I have daily driven my ‘17 RF since 2018 and I love it. Practicality will be an issue, as it is a very small car, however if you’re a one-gal-band you’ll be just fine. I can fit my skis, my one huge piece of luggage, or even a person in the passenger seat. The trunk is roomy for such a small car and does well to fit any shopping I have.
The gas mileage is amazing, the car is fun, and for a daily driver the RF is the one to go for. Go to your local Mazda dealership and get a test drive so you can get a feel for it.
Hey folks any of you daily driving your ND MX-5 in the snow? Thoughts and advice appreciated
Great car but it really needs adjustable lumbar support.
Thank you
So I guess the saying "slow car fast in more fun than fast car fast" is true
You mean, It's more fun to drive a slow car fast, than it is to drive a fast car slow.
I think its fast enough. I had a mustang gt 50th, and obviously when I bought my rf I felt the difference in power, but since is small and light, the acceleration and handling feels great and fun. Take into account my mustang had 440 hp and rf had 155hp. I don’t regret it
How bad is the wind noise with the top down?
It’s been a year I think but IIRC it wasn’t too bad with it down.
Im bout to buy one of these boys. Is it even worth it to get the 2020 over the 2019? Since it is a copy of the previous year.
If you’re buying those model years then it’s probably left over stock or used. If it’s leftover stock then going with an older one is probably better, but if it’s used then you should scrutinize its history real close.
@@ShiftingLanes thank you for the tip. How anal should I actually be if it is used? I wouldn't want to sabatoge the negotiation.
Hey Trinity, if you have a car you’re interested, talk with the seller about getting a local mechanic that you trust to check out the car. If they have maintenance history on the car that’s also great to see.
I bought mine without doing this, but only after visually inspecting the car myself and meeting the seller. I was confident in the owner’s care for his vehicles.
I walked away from our first negotiation but we came to a deal later on. Any good private seller will understand your need to be careful.
Not a blind spot…adjust your mirrors correctly.
Can miata handle a long drive?
With the RF you can close the top and less wind noise that way. But overall it wont be as comfy as a sedan or suv for a long drive. Its a great second car.
I thought John Legend was doing car reviews.
ZOOM, ZOOM!
My only concern is the road noise honestly, specially in the middle east, I drive mostly on roads with 70-80mph speed. And according to many users that's ALOT of noise.
Anyways, its.on my shopping list.
Noise cancelling headphones should remove that static wind noise pretty easily
Are you the actor from walking dead?
Lightest car on the road = low survivability. No biggie, as long as one accepts that risk.
