  • Cleaning your filter cartridge is an important step in keeping your filter and pool clean and healthy! A dirty or damaged filter cartridge prevents your pool filter from effectively trapping debris. Thankfully, cleaning your filter cartridge is a piece of cake!
Dirty, cloudy water is often a sign that your filter cartridge needs to be cleaned. But the most guaranteed way to know if your cartridge is dirty is to look at the filter pressure gauge. If the pressure gauge is 8-10 psi higher than the normal operating level, it's time to clean the cartridge.
To clean your filter cartridge, follow these simple steps:
1️⃣ Spray it gently with a garden hose to rinse off the dirt and debris. Never use a pressure washer when cleaning your cartridge. Too much pressure will destroy the pleats on the cartridge!
2️⃣ If you're using a spray cleaner, simply spray the product all over the cartridge. Let the cleaner soak into the cartridge for 15-20 minutes, then rinse.
3️⃣ If you're using a soaking solution, fill a large bucket with the required amount of cleaning solution, then place the cartridge in the bucket. Let the cartridge soak for 15-20 minutes, then rinse.

Leslie's installed a brand new filter and 4 cartridges for my pool back in November, is it time to clean the cartridges? We have been running the pump nightly for 4 hours up until early March and bumped it up to 8 hours in mid March.

Cartridges should be cleaned when the pressure gauge indicates; when it rises 7-9 psi over the clean, starting pressure, or when flow rate is significantly reduced.

How OCD should I get when cleaning? I keep flipping it over and over and dirt keeps coming out. I ended up spending like 2 hours cleaning the cartridges and felt exhausted. I miss my sand filter...

I recently cleaned my filter. Whenever I vacuum the pool, by the next day, dirt appears in the same place, near where the water comes in when the pump is on. Is it possible that there is dirt that's too fine for the filter to keep and it comes back into the pool? If so, is there a solution?

I am on the east coast and I had the same problem. That's why I now have three cartridges. One for first opening and deep cleaning the water, then using the second after good cleaning. The third one goes in one month before closing. Solved my problem. You see, the filter can only stop so much filth, then it goes into he pool. I also use the aqua comb gently each time.

@@duneme If you adjust water pressure to about the same as a garden hose would be, no problem. Not rocket science here, just use common sense and don't spray water directly into the filter cartridge, spray at a downward angle. There's many other youtube videos to check out if not sure.

It varies from model to model. But you should first stop the pump and close the valves that go to the filter, then open the air nozzle at the top of the filter housing to let air in. At the bottom of the filter housing, there should be a drain port to drain the water. I empty two 5-gallon buckets before the housing is halfway empty. I can now unscrew half of the housing and pull the cartridge out.

Earlier this year (seemingly about the time I started using Pool Perfect weekly), my filter pressure started going up w/in a week or 2 after cleaning. I bought a new cartridge, and w/in a short time, it began doing the same thing. Could the problem be w/the pump or something else? I bought the house/pool 2 years ago, and the previous owner left an old cartridge cleaner that actually has 2-3" long teeth like a comb that attaches to the hose & helps get the water deeper into the folds. Could that be damaging the cartridge?

Perfect weekly has a mild “no phos” inside(which can raise filter pressure), usually not a problem with most filters. Perfect weekly Is still recommend but maybe lower the initial dosage or just skip all together if you still notice pressure problems. Hope this helps

Yes, same happened to my filter with a similar product.
After changing filters due to 'clogged' filaments I'm now saving up for a sand filter.
      Good luck.

Try adding cellulose fiber to the cartridge to improve filtration. Follow directions on the bag to know how much to add
