Excellent video! I bought a new house with an in ground pool and whenever I try to vacuum, the pump loses prime (it makes a different sound and the glass gets empty). I worked around it by half opening the valve of the drain which is on the floor of the pool in the deep end, (which is on the same system as the skimmer - setting on filter and NOT waste) but I am obviously not getting optimal suction for vacuuming the pool. I never thought of filling the pipe with water before vacuuming. From now on I will do as you said and have 100% suction :) And yes I have subscribed!
Nice video. Best part for me was learning how to prime the hose. I'd been using a different method that was time consuming and a bit of a hassle. Also that you can vacuum with the filter set to "waste," which is great after a lot of rainfall when you have to get the water level back below the top of the skimmers. Might as well vacuum while you're at it!
Great looking pool/water and good tips. To be picky on step 3 i like to feed hose through skimmer opening not out up over the edge of pool as it diminishes the hose prime.
@@TheRmilliard You can do it either way, however, if you have a vacuum plate that has a straight hook up, then going over the top is easier and you won’t lose prime. If you have a vacuum plate with a 90 degree hook up then going through the skimmer would be easier. Most importantly, you don’t want to kink the vacuum hose. Thanks for watching.
Just moved to a house with pool, definitely informative, I had a clorine system added, and automation to operate my valves. Turning the pump on and off and going to spa mode with heat is easier, but now there is little pull in my skimmer, I’m going to check water level. My filter is clean and DE pressure looks ok, I need to figure out which valve decreases pull from the bottom and move to the skimmer basket. I have one skimmer basket besides the one on the motor .
Definitely trying this today I been having a hand vacuum for 3 years gave up on it and just tried it again this week it just doesn’t seem to be pulling anything looks like I’ve been doing it wrong all this time great video 👍
Turning off the pump to remove the vacuum plate/hose will allow basket debris to float and reenter the pool, especially if you are using skimmer socks. A better option, if you have it, is to shift the inlet from skimmer to the main drain. The reduced suction will allow you to remove the plate but the debris will remain in the basket.
@@HallmarkPoolSupplies Even if all of the debris stays in the skimmer port, it is nearly impossible to get the skimmer basket back in its slot without pushing that floating debris down into the plumbing and back to the pump.
Hey Mark, I prime my hose. I just holding it to the main jet filling the hose up with water that way until the vacuum head floats to the top of the pool 123 no problem.
I recently built a vacuum port on my pool lines for my above ground pool which bypasses the skimmer and eliminates the need for a vacuum plate. At least on my pool, this has improved the suction of the vacuum immensely and makes vacuuming go much faster than before. It all goes out to waste now too which is so much better than filtering it.
My skimmer line under my diving board busted due to frozen pipes. Previous owners made a make shift line above ground and ran pvc down the length of the pool, and 90° down into where the basket normally would be. Not sure if I can hook vacuum line right to the end of that pvc or if there’s a way to make a makeshift filter to stop large debris from going to pump and clogging it up, or if there’s another recommendation allowing me to vacuum. Your comment made me think you have another solution.

Old pro here ... when you encounter items likely to clog your skimmer (sticks/rocks/etc) try to use your leaf rake to collect them prior to vacuuming. When you are down to dirt/sand/pebbles the clogging risk has passed. Vacuum without fear. With a little practice you will be using that leaf rake for everything but dirt. Hello, great video on how to vacuum an inground pool, thank you... I have a question for you. I need to scrap and repaint the wall above the pools water line, so I need to drain my pool to get a ladder in it and catch the paint chips. At the same time, I would like to get the paint chips out of my pool by using the "waste" valve to vacuum it. Hi Mark, very informative video, it’s good when you learn something, it’s why we are here right, so thank you. Ok so the reason why I am here is because I made one of the mistakes highlighted in your video, and I didn’t use the skimmer plate… I just went right in with the end of the hose into the intake… my concern is now, as I was vacuuming quite a bit of debris which I followed up with backwashing, could I have done some damage to the filter or added debris to the sand that is now contaminating it. I’m probably overthinking but I would like to get confirmation from an expert. I will be using the skimmer plate in the future!
Two questions. 1) What information do I need about the skimmer in order to purchase the correct vacuum plate? Is it just the inner diameter of the skimmer? Second, you mentioned there are 2 ways to set the system up for vacuuming. One is through the filter, and the other to waste. Can you provide any guidance as to when you would want to do one versus the other?

I have owned a pool for 3 years now. Came across this video and was wondering what mistakes can you possibly make. This is how I do it too. It's more common sense than anything else.
Thank you! Bought our house 4 years ago, so still somewhat new to pool maintenance. I have a sand filter and have always set to backwash. I didn't realize I could vacuum set to filter. Is one setting preferred over the other? Using backwash means I have to stop periodically for the water level to reset -- even though I keep the water hose running at max while I vacuum.
Never vacuum in the backwash position. Always vacuum in the filter position, unless the pool is extremely dirty or algae infested, then vacuum to waste. If you vacuum to waste you will have to add water to the pool. Thanks for watching.
That's unfortunate. There is very little space inside the Filter Laterals for debris, and if they don't get clogged, all the debris you just vacuumed up is sent right back to the pool upon setting the valve back to Filter.
Also, be sure you buy a vacuum head with a brush if you are trying to vacuum algae. Made the mistake of getting one without and was a total waste of money.
Well I can add another one. Having made sure not to make any of the mistakes mentioned here, I scrupulously filled my vacuum hose and attached it to the skimmer plate, turned on the pump, and realised I'd forgotten to connect the vacuum head itself. Mad scramble back inside to the pump switch, but it was too late, I had to reprime the damn thing!😂
Make sure you put the stationary end of the vacuum hose on the vacuum plate, if you hook up the swivel end of the hose on the plate you will suck air. If you are hooking the hose up properly then you need to check the cuff on the hose, if the cuff is loose, cracked or the vacuum plate is cracked then you can also suck air. Thanks for watching.
Love the video. Can you do a video on how to install a sheer descent waterfall blade. If the plumbing for the pool has been done once I buy the correct hose to connect to everything to waterblade is there any other adjustments that need to be made. This is for an inground pool. Thanks. Would appreciate any help you can offer. I already know how to build the brick fountain just want to make sure I'm not missing any steps on installing waterfall. Also not sure which way to turn water valve.
Most kits will have instructions for hook up. A sheer descent or any water feature will vary depending on size of pump, the plumbing size and the amount of flow needed for the water feature you have. You can also check out the manufacturer’s specs for that particular water feature. Hopefully this will help. Thanks for watching.
@@cheryl3217 Yes, this will give you more suction and if the suction is too much you can open the drain a little to relieve the suction. Thanks for watching.

When in filter or backwash the water goes through the lateral assembly. You should not have sand going into the pool or coming out of the backwash line. If you recently changed sand and you put to much sand in the filter and you backwash, sand can come out of the backwash line, eventually the sand will self level. If you have or have not changed sand and sand is going into the pool you may want to check your lateral assembly for damage. If the lateral assembly is damaged backwashing the filter will not put sand in the backwash line. If the backwash line itself is cracked or damaged underground, when you backwash sand and dirt can wash the ground out around the pipe. Thanks for watching.

I have been cleaning my own pool for a while now. I was forced to learn after being ripped off by several pool cleaning companies in my area. It has definitely been a learning experience but has overall been rewarding. Once cleaned and balanced believe me, it is easier to maintain and prevent than to slack off and have to treat and restore. As a female pool owner, I have thought about posting my own videos. Maybe I should now. I recently had to install my own pump motor after my home warranty company kept stalling to find a repair person.
I am not clear on the vacuum you just explained. My pool has a hose to hook up the hose, and the vacuum is the one that rolls (Hayward) pool cleaners. Then we have the skimmer with flat open face that water flows through the basket from the pool side. Often times, the Hayward pool cleaner will move for awhile and stopped and this leaves my pool full of dirty. Not much debris gets to the skimmer. How do I vacuum the pool in this arrangement? Thanks
@@stanleyonyia1803 Vacuuming a pool with a suction cleaner does not allow the skimmer to skim the pool at the same time the cleaner is working. If you use a robotic cleaner then you have use of the skimmer while the cleaner is working. If you manually vacuum a pool then you will vacuum from the skimmer or a vacuum line. @@gailcox3199 It depends on the type of vacuum plate that is being used. Using a vacuum plate that has a straight hook up, it is easier to go over the top. Using a vacuum plate that has an elbow hook up, it is easier to go through the front of the skimmer. Thanks for watching.
make sure you keep an eye on it, it will really restrict your flow when full and can crack a basket, or starve your pump. Depending on what you are vacuuming up in your pool, or on daily usage.

Do you have any recommendations on the best cordless pool vacuum for algae?
I do know maytronics who makes dolphin cleaners have cordless units. I like plug in because they have constant power and are more powerful. If you need help l do sell these cleaners. If you would like to email your contact info l will be glad to help. Thanks for watching.

What do you mean vacuum in filter or in waste. I have been cleaning my pool since my father passed away seven years ago. I’m not sure on some things that you say as far as what there called. I don’t know if I’m vacuuming my pool right and I don’t know what you’re talking about as far as in filter or in waste. Is there something that needs to be adjusted when vacuuming the pool. I might be doing it I just never heard those terms. So can you please explain that to me.
I know I sound dumb but I’m learning.
Thank you.
@@joer.martinez2398 Vacuuming in filter or waste are positions used if you have a sand or DE filter. Cartridge and some DE filters do not have multiport valves. I have a video on how to vacuum an in ground pool, hopefully this will help. Here is a link to the video. Thanks for watching.

nice video, but I have a dedicated vacuum line build within the pool
The owner of this pool has never vacuumed manually, they have robot vacuums for sure
Sometimes you can’t use a vacuum of the chemicals are really unbalanced and it’s potentially going to damage the bot.
😆
as a female doing this job is interesting and please help me learn on how to go about the pool your video is interesting
Hammerhead for the win baby
Thanks for providing this video. Where can I find the link to your Patreon page? (Edit) I found you.
OMG , I was sucking all leaves through the skimmer pipes until now
I am not clear on the vacuum you just explained.
I have a video that goes into more detail on how to vacuum a pool manually that should help. Here is the link to this video, thanks for watching.

@@HallmarkPoolSupplies Thanks a lot. I will try it and let you know the outcome.
Thanks
Why did you go over the wall rather to enter into the side of the intake?
@@gailcox3199 It depends on the type of vacuum plate that is being used. Using a vacuum plate that has a straight hook up, it is easier to go over the top. Using a vacuum plate that has an elbow hook up, it is easier to go through the front of the skimmer. Thanks for watching.
I’m thinking of using a skimmer basket sock to catch more debris is that a better way?
Yes, filter savers work well. Thanks for watching.
make sure you keep an eye on it, it will really restrict your flow when full and can crack a basket, or starve your pump. Depending on what you are vacuuming up in your pool, or on daily usage.
Thanks!
Thank you very much and thanks for watching.
Super informative!!!
What about a leaf trap so you don’t have to worry about clogging the skimmer line?
That is what the basket is used for, thanks for watching.
Thanks for the video
