  • Cleaning a cartridge filter is a pretty straightforward process. Each is a little different but the general principle is the same. Below are some links to the tools shown in the video.
Turn off the pool equipment: Before starting the cleaning process, turn off the pool pump to ensure safety and avoid any accidents. Make sure the pool is not going to turn on and if you are unsure just turn off the breaker to the pool pump.
Release pressure: If your pool filter system has a pressure relief valve, use it to release the pressure inside the filter. You can also simply relieve the pressure by removing the drain plug on the bottom of the filter. I suggest this method as it will also drain the water from the tank.
Open the filter: Depending on your specific pool filter model, remove the locking mechanism or unscrew the top of the filter housing to access the cartridges inside. For the quad-type filters, there is a clamp held on by a Spring Barrel Nut.
Remove the cartridges: Carefully remove the cartridge elements from the filter housing. Take note of their orientation so that you can put them back in the same position later. Most cartridges will be marked with the word “Top” on the top.
Rinse off loose debris: Use a garden hose with a high-pressure nozzle to rinse off loose debris and dirt from the cartridges. Direct the water from top to bottom and make sure you get the pleats completely clean.
Inspect the cartridges: Take a close look at the cartridges to ensure there are no tears, holes, or damage. If you find any significant damage, it's best to replace the cartridges.
Reassemble the filter: Once the cartridges are clean and dry, carefully place them back into the filter housing, making sure they are correctly oriented as they were before.
Close the filter: Securely fasten the filter housing, ensuring there are no leaks. Apply silicone lube to the o-ring to extend the life of the o-ring and to prevent leaks.
Turn on the pool equipment and open the air relief valve: Once everything is reassembled and secured, turn on the pool pump and check for any leaks or abnormal pressure readings. You want to open the air bleeder/ air relief valve to remove any air from the tank.
I suggest cleaning single cartridge filters every 30 days and the quad-type 4 cartridge set up every 4-6 months.

Great video! Thank you. I have been using channel lock and it takes so much time to unscrew it. I have a Pentair Clean and Clear Plus, I can't hold the pump strap and close it by myself : / it's just too heavy LOL

I have a lot of trees in the back,i mean really alot. So I am alway fighting pollen and algae in the water. I washed the filters really good but the insides of those flaps or whatever they are called always seems to have some sort of film. It would take me a long time to use a fine brush or something to clean all that. Is there a chemical or something to use instead? Water alone is no doing the trick. I even filled up a bucket with water and chlorine and left the filter in there for a while, then rinse and did the other end because off course the whole filter doesn't fit inside a bucket. That didn't do much either. The pressure is not what it used to be. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

Question, do you use chemical clearner on the filter besides just washing with water?

Great video and I’m about to clean mine soon. How often should this be completed and do you recommend a cleaner or just spraying them down is fine?

Just water in most cases. I rarely use a degreaser.

Question we seem to always be battling high phosphate in our pool even with using perfect weekly. After a treatment of NoPhos we noticed the filters to have a milky colored residue when we cleaned the filters. This was a first for us. We have treated with NoPhos before what the filters weren't milky and hard to get cleaned. We just purchased from Leslie's the Pleatco Pool Filter Wash to soak the filters in on the next cleaning of the filters. What causing the milky colored water? We've had the pool since October 2022, so this is out first summer with a pool. We live in the central valley here in CA, and staying up with chemicals during the summer ain't no joke! Really enjoy your channel.

It's normal when phosphates are high to have this milky byproduct. Usually it is fallout dust on the bottom that gets into the filter. I suggest reducing your use of the phosphate remover. Clean the filter and add a PoolRx to the pool or add borate to 50 ppm.

I have a pentair clean amd clear 420 sqft filter. I got it brand new about a month ago and it keeps the water clear. I do keep having an issue where debris keeps coming back into the pool when i vaccuum, Is this normal for cartridge filters. Its pretty annoying and is making me regret getting this filter. I had an old de filter before and didnt have this issue of debris comeing back into the pool while vacuuming. Any input would be super helpful

It could be that the top manifold spring is not touching the top of the tank properly and when you vacuum the added pressure is causing a gap to form. I would take it apart and inspect the components carefully. It should not do that.

@SPL thank you for the reply, I took it all apart and cleaned the cartridges while it was apart. I made sure everything was seated well when I reassembled it so hopefully that's all it was.

Would you happened to know how to increase the water pressure from the property to have better cleaning results? Some of my clients have poor water pressure

      Can't. No backwashing.

What I like to do is place the cartridge I'm spraying directly in front of the other cartridges so that any overspray from the nozzle is hitting the other cartridges....sort of pre-cleaning them until they're next up to be sprayed. Not a drop of water wasted. lol

@@SPL do you recommend any? Would bleach do anything bad to the filters if i soak them? My pool builder turn our pool on before we put the concrete around the pool so my filters have this brown color no matter how many times i clean them.

The button hook sucks. I bought one to remove the plug on of my Pentair Clean and Clear. The angle isn't really sufficient to put adequate pressure keeping the tool engaged while trying to remove the plug. I'll also admit Pentair 's design is horrible placing in such a hard to reach and awkward position. The easiest way is removing the inlet and outlet couplings and turning the base upside down to thoroughly clean it.

    • @SPL

      Worst location for sure!

    • @speedracerjeff
      @speedracerjeff 10 місяців тому

The Pentair drain plug design is the worst. I don’t even take them off anymore due to them stripping so easily and possibly leaking when you put them back on…
I just carry a Wet/Dry Shop Vac and suck out the debris out of the bottom, quick and easy.
