Religion can be used to justify so many horrible things, including racism. Evolution, logic, reason, and empathy easily debunk it. I hope that our society becomes more united through secularism instead of letting mythology continue to divide us. Nobody is inferior nor superior to anybody else.
I can here specifically to leave a comment about black people, slave mentality and Christianity. Didn't even listen to the video yet, saw your comment first. I'm glad black people are starting to wake up to the purposeful connection between Christianity and the slave mentality. Chris Rock said "a black Christian is like a black person with not memory". It wasn't even 100 years ago that the U.S. had unofficial state sponsored Christian terrorism and a Christian terrorist group that has terrorized and killed more people than Islam ever has in America. And that group is the KKK. And their main mission was to propagate and maintain the slave mentality in black people. Christianity is only peaceful because we now force it to be peaceful.
Indeed: And after his first coming promise them a second coming that before a heinous period in history, they are so much more special than previous generations that they will be raptured and sparred the tribulation, though no mention of the raptured exist when John ask the angel who are those in the TWO groups in Heaven. I get disgusted when I hear those who say they don't need to worry about what is happening because the rapture will save them from the evil.
I knew it was just a matter of time before an atheist quoted this, sadly Christianity main point isn’t that Christ is coming back although he is quite soon but rather that Christ gave his life for us at the cross so that by his death we shall live. If we accept he paid our sin debt in full by giving his life for us then we can be certain that just as Jesus rose again so shall we! Death is not the end for us but merely the beginning, as such our hope isn’t that Messiah Yeshuah Hamashiach is coming back to judge the world but rather when it’s our time to let go of this life he shall be waiting with open arms in the next, God bless
Our trust in Jesus allows us to know that we are sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise so that when death comes for us we are not afraid but rather are confident that God will resurrect us at the appointed time. As such by accepting Christ, we can know that we have eternal life! ”These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.“ 1 John 5:13 KJV

@@ChannelofNathanielI remember reading a "story" once. I can't remember where or details. Neither if it was a thought experiment or some theological thought (it's possible that it was even some left hand occult view). But it basically entrailed that god can not take what he wants from you. He can make your life happy or miserable but he will not benefit from it because in truth he doesn't have power over you. The only way he can get what he wants is if you give it freely. So he convinces/tricks people to do it. Convinces them to turn them selves to him, convinces them to burn up as an offering until nothing remains. What you said made me think of it.

1 year post-deconversion here, just wanted to share that recently I'm hearing from my peers things like "You just get the christianity wrong, christianity is about freedom", and they just can't understand and accept the fact, that though for some people christianity may be helpful, for me, growing uo in a toxic family system, christianity was the worst thing that could happen, because it prevented me from ever saying 'no' or standing up for myself, because I would think that it would be 'prideful' and 'not obeying parents'. I truly finally found my freedom in atheism, naturalism and secular humanism.
I'm stuck living with religious parents. Their house, their rules. As soon as I get my own place to live I will assert that I no longer feel the right to be unreasonably submissive.
I deconverted a little over a year ago and it's so heart breaking to hear my family and friends say that they would happily die to serve god. It's terrifying to see what religion can do to someone's mental state.
I feel that, and same. Ironically it was being loving towards others, and devout in the faith that can make you realize it’s a fallacious system that’s contradictory to what it’s supposed to be projecting. Christianity definitely damages the mental state of a person. It trains your brain to be dependent on external sources out of your control, rots critical-thinking, and destroys self-esteem. If you are healthy in any of these, Christians call it “selfishness” or “pride” completely distorting, and exaggerating the meaning. The worst part about leaving is definitely the family aspect, and seeing the reality of indoctrination, and how it affected you, and your family. It’s a shame they’re trapped in that thinking, but unlike them however, we at least don’t believe they’ll burn for eternity.

When your boss can genocide the entire world and your response is, "We deserved it" then you're a slave. lol. I'm constantly surprised how casually Christians say things like, "God can harm/kill me and my loved ones and who am I to question that? God can do whatever he wants." It's pretty horrifying.
Imo we're seeing a larger, exaggerated version of the dreadful parenting behaviors of the brutishly-backwards-even-for-their-time late Bronze Age to early Iron Age Middle Eastern men who wrote the bible. No wonder they were frequently being overrun by the surrounding nations - and every time that happened, the Levite priests and prophets blamed the Israelites, Hebrews and Jews for not being sufficiently loyal and obedient to their human-sacrifice-demanding war god.
Saying "he's too powerful to stop, so avoid angering him" and saying "he was right to do it" REALLY shouldn't be the same thing. Lots of abrahamic religions seem to confuse the two.
Have you ever been to a plantation? I'm in the south, and I've gone to one. To say you're isolated is an understatement. The one I went to was surrounded by a swamp and in the middle of nowhere. Don't forget that there were overseers and dogs that were deployed to catch the enslaved who tried to run away. If you were caught, you were made an example of. It was more than religion that kept my ancestors in chattel slavery. Also, please remember that we are brown skinned, running away was a mental thing, and made all the more difficult by not being able to blend in.
Not only that, you had bullshit like the fugitive slave act that legally forced slaves to be returned even if they were in the free states at the time. You hate slavery, too bad, the legal code now compels you to give that person up. "States rights" suddenly doesn't apply.
I'm a white man who is ashamed to have been raised in the South. My own Irish-American family isn't racist, nor am I. My family never owned slaves since my European ancestors came to the USA from Ireland, and my other ancesters were Creek Native Americans. However, I know a lot of racist, who think they aren't racist, white MAGA religious conservatives. I've even met some older white people here who think the Civil rights movement was a mistake, and I'm just absolutely ashamed of people like that. We're all human beings. As an atheist who has studied the basics of evolution, I know that we are all homo sapiens and that no ethnicity is superior nor inferior to any other. @Goldenhawk583 I'm tired of living in a red conservative state being a proud liberal Democrat myself. What keeps me here? My children, whom I had before my deconversion.
What a horrible passage. No deity is more important than my two children. If a deity told me to do what Abraham was told to do to Isaac, I would be enraged. I would also be enraged if I was told to abandon them for any reason, including preaching.
@@Johnmhatheistwell, you woulda been a better parent than mine. I was told on a regular basis that I came 3rd on the “love and importance scale”. 1st comes God, 2nd is spouse, 3rd are children, followed by the rest of one’s church family, next comes other denominations of Christianity, and lastly mankind… or at least those who could still be proslytized; ie, no heathens, heretics or apostates. And of course, when I came out back in the 90s, I became one of those apostate heathens.
@ahsokaventriss3268 I'm sorry about that. I think children should always come first, no matter what. Your spouse, boyfriend/girlfriend will not always be yours, but your children will always be yours. They're also, in nature, your offspring.

I love it when you do these deep dives into the psychology of faith. Sometimes we can get stuck in the weeds of the technical arguments of things like scripture, dogma, and logic while overlooking this big-picture view. When we zoom out just a bit we see that many times we miss the forest for the trees. This episode reminds me of a phrase I believe I read in a Warhammer 40K book once that totally applies to Christianity - "The loyal slave learns to love the lash."
@MindShift-Brandon I found your entire video very informative I especially appreciate your Precision with the scripture and being absolutely true to the gospel message. The whole principle of what the psychological impact of a doctrine can be is why I questioned my faith. As a psychologist, i am aware there are some psychological benefits to having a strong healthy faith which is why some health psychology tests (from the mainstream, not "Christian psychology") include scales to measure this and defend it based on the research. I understand how certain doctrines were unhealthy for me but didn't throw the baby out with the bathwater. I am now an exvangelical, liberal, admittedly heretical, agnostic, Christian believer. I am interested in any empirical research supporting the generalizability of the negative psychological impact of any particular doctrine? When you say it is generally psychologically unhealthy. Do you have data to back that up?
When my parents kept taking me to church as a kid and every time we got on our knees toward a statue of someone dead hanging on the wall never felt good to me
Life without religion even though i live with religious parents who continue to be an echo chamber trying to call me back to the slave pen of the church is a breath of fresh air compared to what i went through in a former religious life. The dread of dying and bewailing a second death in hell hanging over my head like a guiatine all the time wasn't what i would call "love." When i thought about what the word yolk actually meant i realized it wasn't the warm gooey substance that nourishes something in an egg but the device called a yoke which is designed to hold someone in place in often times a humiliating position. It's amazing how many of the verses and phrases in the bible have everything to do with servitude of even "true" believers. Thank you for another great one, brandon.
26:37 finally I am unleashing and unmasking secretly and deeply hidden struggles from being apart of Christian Catholic church and that is: mental struggles, yes maybe my struggles with self worth, self image ,self love doesn't all come from the church , but it definitely made my path to it worse.. being embarrassed to go to an confession, being naturally this super dirty sinful person who isn't going everyday to church and deserves hell for it..imagining and feeling like nothing ,feeling shame and guilt for commiting sins and waiting for each of the punishments... lot more I won't talk about for now.. I actually realize, that really, it made my struggles worse. Keep preaching, we need you and deeply appreciate all your hard work, dedication and passion!
Thank you Brandon for a very complete and comprehensive analysis of the slave mentality of Christianity. Every good Christian must and will openly and freely state; "I am a lamb of God" and "The Lord is my shepherd". Let's be perfectly clear, that a shepherd is a business man. A shepherd does not keep a thousand sheep as pets. A shepherd does not have a true love, by definition, for his flock of sheep. The shepherd takes on this occupation to benefit himself. The shepherd protects his sheep from wolves, not to spare the sheep the horror of being eaten by wolves, but to maintain the shepherd's assets. Whether a slave serves under a master who is an evil tyrant, or whether the master is a just, fair and compassionate master, he remains your master and you remain his slave, his property and you are permitted to exist for his benefit. Never forget that every good shepherd will eventually lead every one of his sheep to slaughter to add to his wealth and glory.
Oh man! I had a whole diatribe right in line with this about shepherds. But my first take is was out if focus. Then my second take my mic stopped after 10 min. So by my third round i left so much out lol. Bad day of filming
We usually reply to Pascal's Wager with a "what about other religions?" But this video is an excellent representation of the other answer, the one that really rocked my world!
The fact that the Bible requires you to blindly believe it's true without providing irrefutable empircal evidence of its supposed truth, throwing away logic and reason, makes me feel like a slave, if I were to believe it.
You do know the Bible encourages healthy skepticism, right? Don't buy that? Check out these verses: Debut 18:22, 1 John 4:1-3, Gal 1:8. Those are just starters proving how wrong you are
@@VictoriousCatholic This person is still right. Those verses do not say be wary of the Bible itself. It’s to be wary of other things besides the Bible.
@@ThanosDestroyeryearsago wrong. He's saying the Bible teaches blind obedience, which it Does not. I have several more examples showing you're wrong, a good one being Scripture alone refutes Scripture Alone
This is one that I've heard some arguments for over the years. Many Christians believe we are all slaves to something. Slave to drugs, slave to sex, etc. Essentially "a slave to sin." and that we only have one way to escape it, and that's to become "slaves to righteousness." There always seems to be this undertone of submission throughout the texts. It's supposed to be submission to `God,` but in practice, it ends up being submission to the church. Pretty convenient.
To them, sin is pretty much 99% of things we do every day. It's the most petty, harmless, mundane things that they believe are sin. So, in reality, it's just us being alive and being human that they think we're slaves to. Now, of course, people can fall into very harmful addictions, but I'd say that it's a stretch to say that that's the case for the majority of the population. And even if you do fall into some kind of very harmful addiction, there's always a choice to get help and break free from the addiction. No one is forcing someone to stay addicted.
@@briannamorrison380 Yep, the bottom line being that coming at it from this `slave` mentality is not healthy. It implies that you are helpless without a god which is absurd. I've personally recovered from drug addiction some 40 years now. No god needed. I'm not saying it was easy, but praying to gods wasn't the answer.

I look forward to these videos every Sunday. I’m sad that I wasted so many of my Sundays in the indoctrination stations aka church, but taking them back and truly enjoying my Sundays has been one of the best lifestyle changes I’ve made this year.
I remember when I was a christian saying things like "I'm unworthy of God's love. I don't deserve to be forgiven of my sins. I'm an evil, lost sinful wretch who deserves to burn in hell for eternity, but thanks to this perfect all-loving God, I, a lowly evil human being, can be saved by believing and being baptized for the remission of my sins since God loved me so much he sent his to die, ane resurrected on the third day." There's nothing wrong with being human.
I have long considered the possibility that, given the idea of Original Sin, they don't think themselves as humans, but more so as temporarily embarassed Images of God, who would have been permanently embarassed had it not for grace and redemption. Namely, being human isn't what they wanted. To even share an iota of what God embodies, is that they wanted.
Religion doesn't have much to actually offer so they spin being human as the worst crime imaginable and, of course, only they have the means to save you.
That’s indoctrination 101 convince the subject they’re a worthless piece of garbage but if they follow the right path they can be salvaged. Debasing individuals with this nonsense should be criminalized. Just look at how they talk about gays, trans, and any one else under the “others” banner. So sickening they are allowed to do this to children.
So much of liturgical music centers around this "lost sinful wretch whom god deigns to connect with" stuff. It gets enchanted into your head. So interesting that as a child I never was allowed (by myself or others) to notice that the "awfulness" of humanity was mandated by the person/god who was also creating a punishment for that awfulness. That they came from the same source, a closed system.
Another great video, Brandon. This one I can feel in my bones. I still struggle with self esteem and learned helplessness, even years after leaving religion. It takes a ton of work to undo what you were programmed to believe about yourself from birth. Thanks again for all you do.
Appreciate that! Yes me too. Even during this video i saw in myself certain thought patterns trying to battle it that i could see were just old parts of my indoctrination. Its insane.

@@Johnmhatheist Many thanks and greetings back. Yes, maybe it's a little easier here. If you don't go to church, you're not usually disadvantaged or anything. I come from a big city with many religions present, and atheism is also present. Nevertheless, most people in rural areas are often very religious. It's not that easy there. The culture is very influenced by religion. But a lot is changing right now. Many people are culturally religious. But if you put up with people shaking their heads at you, pitying you because you're supposedly going to hell, or laughing at you, it's quite okay here as an atheist. I'm glad that I'm no longer forced to believe. I hope that you are doing well and that you will find peace in your situation. I wish you all the best and lots of strength!
Thanks so much for this for this video, it has given me a lot to think about. I am a 68 year old gay man who was raised in the church and attended five days a week of private christian school. I have never been able to make peace with my sexual preference. Self sabatoged relationships, guilt, shame, and drug and alcohol abuse have been my constant experiences. Even now as I am attempting to deconstruct, I am terrified that the divine bully will send me to hell. I am embarrassed and frustrated that I cannot let go of this fear, as it is ingrained so deep inside of me. Presently I am battling depression, as I reflect on how different my life might have been had I not been taught at such a young age to see myself as a sinner, and unworthy of God's love.
@thenowherevan7338 Hang in there. As someone once told me, it's going to be ok... being honest and open and authentic is exactly the type of person I want to be. I'm 53, grew up in the church, father a pastor, grandfather a pastor, worked, lived, attended church my whole life, except for the last 7-10 years... all the questions I have as well about, questioning myself about how can I be right/correct? When everyone around me is still Christian, family, friends, etc... Just know if there is a loving creator and if they're going to punish me for trying to be authentic and real, than I don't think they're that loving to begin with and I probably don't need to follow that kind of deity anyway. But what I can do is offer words of encouragement. You are a human being and have the power of self determination, use that power to build up a pattern of self love and approval. Thought patterns can be relearned and you the perfect person for that task. Start appreciating the small things like a morning cup of coffee a walk hugging a loved one even a pet. Just keep reminding yourself this is a struggle taking place inside your brain and in the end it’s your brain seizing control from those that stole it is a daily endeavor and you my friend will persevere! Peace and happiness cannot be bestowed on to you by anyone other than yourself give yourself the gift of freedom.
Brandon, thank you for this! It’s one of the most important aspects of religion to address since it’s at the core of who we are, what we can be, how we set awful, unnecessary limits on ourselves. People spend years in therapy fighting for the very things religion undermines: autonomy, self-worth, confidence, personal accountability…this is why no matter how benign a religion may seem, this obeyance to something greater than us, this bowing down as though we are not worthy of capable makes religion harmful.
One of the things that I hate about Christianity is the loss of individuality that Christians experience. I was thinking about this the other day and the whole thing reminds me of that old movie, "The Stepford Wives."
This especially hits home as someone raised in the black church. I only recently started my personal deconstruction process and one of the major catalysts was realizing how Christianity in general and specifically the structure and customs of the black church resonate so closely with American slavery. This was, after all, a religion that was forced on black slaves as a means of control: work hard, suffer in this lifetime, obey your master, don’t question anything, you’ll be rewarded when you die. Even now, black people are the most religious people in America and we, as a whole, don’t realize how much it holds us back. As you mentioned, socially and so on. Thankfully many of us are waking up to this slave religion. Awesome video.
It is very impressive that you see reality so clearly for what it is. True wisdom is being able to see reality as it is. In contrast, the Lack of wisdom or being delusional is the inability to see reality as it truly is. Brandon, you're like an enlightened human being. Your contents have long-lasting values and will wake countless people up for many decades. 😊
This video lives up to the name of the channel in such a unique way. Thank you very much for doing so and please continue to bring new videos about these psychological theories. As a psychology major here in Brazil and a former Jehovah's Witness, videos like this have helped me a lot in my deconstruction.
Thanks for clarifying this! How often have I heard Christians say things like: "Without God I wouldn't have meaning in my life. I wouldn't have any reason at all not to hurt other people. Love, family, justice, everything would be gone." But I hadn't really connected this up to a slave mentality.
@@MindShift-BrandonI also find that mindset bizarre. Christianity didn't invent morality. Every single culture had injunctions against murder, theft etc. because otherwise society can't function. Any intelligent social species has to evolve empathy by default. The vast majority of humans don't WANT to kill, rape or otherwise hurt others. I don't need a god to tell me not to do these things because I have empathy. When those religious types talk as though a belief that God will punish you in hell for eternity is the only thing that can possibly keep anyone from freely committing every conceivable crime says more about them than it does about atheists, and in fact I find it highly disconcerting. If someone is genuinely such a sociopath that only their religion keeps them on a leash, I hope these people never deconvert.
I was having a conversation with a muslim dude who was giving me the same line. It was actually kinda sad cause I got the impression he really believed that he, a person I'd been having a perfectly amicable conversation with the entire time, would turn into some kind of flesh eating monster if he didn't have Allah. It's a pretty deranged way of viewing oneself.
I used to have friends in highschool that would argue with this exact line, and it took me years to realize that truly meant it. It was one of the most disturbing things to be able to look into their eyes and see that legit the only thing keeping them from hurting people really was their fairytale. Definitely got out of that friend group real fast after that 😅
I was born at the beginning of time and through time and chemistry my atoms were assembled in a form that would allow for wonder and curiosity. This reminds me of how the nazis managed to maintain control over their concentration camps. Why were camp revolts so rare, even though the SS-Totenkopfverbande was sending their men to the frontlines via the 3rd SS Division Totenkopf? Because of the Kapos, which were prisoners of the camp that kept watch over the other prisoners. That's literally it, prisoners watching prisoners at the orders of their nazi masters.
I appreciate these videos so much. Though I deconstructed a decade ago, it’s incredibly validating to have your videos communicating intellectual structure to my emotional process. I fell so completely into this slave mentality in my 20s. I shamed myself further as I continued to feel rejected by god since I wasn’t experiencing the relationship with him that those around me spoke of. My shame was rooted deeply in my repressed childhood trauma. I just wanted god to love me, but the belief that my failure to be acknowledged by even my creator became proof of my unworthiness. It’s a beautiful moment this morning to look back at my choice to walk away from that faith as evidence of my inherent worth, despite the exploitation & trauma by those who took authority over me.
Omg, THIS. It's what triggers me into fury when I run into these obnoxious social media proselytizers claiming this incredible connected transcendent LSD-like experience of communing with Jesus in their Very Special Personal Relationship with Him. I spent 16 years trying to feel as if I weren't howling into an unresponsive void.
Now i see why you never got the Gift. You were NEVER a believer to begin w/ SMH. "They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us." 1 John 2:19
Really enjoyed this video, Brandon! 🎯💯 Most definitely Christianity is deeply rooted in slave mentality. Just recently, I was watching a Protestant virtual church service and during a prayer a pastor actually said, "we are slaves in Christ" When I heard those words, I didn't get a nice cozy feeling. And, yet I'm sure the majority of those people seated in the pews that Sunday were totally ok with those words because of their slave mentality and group conformity.

Two more things - yes to the data heavy talk. We need more of this. It’s central to understanding why we gravitate to religion and how it shapes our psyche. Second - I just noticed the non-verbal communication in this clip. When you speak of what believing entails, how it affects us, there’s a heaviness to your tone, the set of your face and body…it brings across a sense of weariness. But when you mentioned creating something wonderful and beautiful, your whole body lightens up, your voice picks up, your eyes are brighter. So much for “without god, there is no joy or meaning in life, only darkness.”
I worked at a church for 11 years, as the media director and I was let go on a Monday and I can still remember the feeling of freedom that next Sunday morning while walking in my local park thinking... the relief, the release, like a weight had been removed. It's why Brandon's tag line of "keep thinking" means so much to me. That Sunday morning that I didn't have to "go to work" was so wonderful and it's been wonderful ever since then, haven't stepped back in a church since.
Your messages just keep improving. I say that not meaning that “this was better than that”, but to say that you keep peeling back the layers in such an effective manner!
I truly think, as I'm about halfway in on this video, that this is ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL VIDEOS youve made yet!! Definitely a video that needs to be heard again and again!!
Nietsche's Antichrist and Human All Too Human goes into pretty good detail about how Christianity is a slave religion based on slave mentality. Without contrasting master morality as much as Zarathustra.
Yes! I almost wanted to do a whole vid on Nietzsche’s thoughts but thought that would scare away any believers that might watch lol. So just added one of my favorite points from him at the end.
Hey Mindshift! Believer here, though you already know this. Been around your channel for a bit. I can't say much 'cause the YT gods don't like it. Just came to say I understand, I used to be there, I don’t feel that way, anymore. I've never felt more free nor wise since turning to God. I pray others could feel what I feel: love, peace, happiness, etc. Makes me sad unbelievers don't see what I see nor feel what I feel. God bless you!
it’s sooo frustrating talking to people who have this slave mentality. my sister is the epitome of it. it’s really sad to watch, and i struggle with communicating with her. very strong boundaries are required to maintain our relationship. thanks for putting the feelings i have into words that i never could ❤
"Slaves obey your masters" was a big deal-breaker for me as an African American Baby Boomer during the Civil Rights era! Especially after reading my gospel-singing aunt's Golden Legacy Black History comic books!
@hannahmcafee What's laughable about it? Can't your ilk take a moment to consider anything but your own views? And why can't most of you retort against scrutiny in any way but being full of spite,as you clearly demonstrate?
I learned to never trust anyone that trashes the fragile, tempermental environment we're forced to inhabit in the vain hope of an eternal reward that might not exist long ago.
Thank you for another great video, Brandon. I swear you reach into my brain, plucking every questioning thought I’ve had during my deconstruction and answer in a way that just makes so much sense to me.
I can’t wait for a part 2! I always sit with my coffee or tea on a Sunday morning and enjoy your videos. You make some really clear points and it’s so easy to see the way you lay it out. I think most Of us have seen this connection but you go into such detail and put in the work, thank you!
Wow, this was phenomenal. I recently wrote several pages in my personal journal about similar things and what I've seen and heard from christians in my life, or outside I guess, since some may consider me the voice of evil. Here you are speaking about it. Thank you for confirming this and explaining it so well and in this way. Yes, please, if you can, as many parts to this as you can. I hope you realize how many people you may be helping along the way. Thank you again.
Thank you for this video. I had been raised in church and just finally left the faith around the age of 35. Looking back, I can't understand why it took so long. I attribute much of my indecisiveness and low self-esteem to the fact that I had all of my decisions made and was always told that, without God, I would be nothing. It's extremely harmful and I wish more people could see it before it becomes ingrained in their head.
You were obviously doing something wrong dude. How is it even possible to have low self esteem when you literally have GOD at your side. This makes no sense to me dude.. He gave me my strength, not the other way around. I feel like i could beat Mike Tysons a** with God at my side. Buddy missed the plot. 🤦
The mentality of submission to an abusive deity is also present in the other abrahamic religions, they just don't sugarcoat it as much as in Christianity.

So perfectly right on Brandon, and I’m a person who was chained by Christianity through my childhood and continued through my college years at a Lutheran university ! You’re doing a very difficult job, knowing how imprisoning the religious programming can be !!!
"Jesus above everything else" That line, right there? That resonates with me - I had a friend I've had since primary school, and he got married several years ago now. He's always been Christian, being raised in a Christian family, so he got married in a church; during that wedding, the priest officiating it constantly mentioned things like "love your partner like you love Jesus" or something. I don't remember exactly what was said, anymore, but it essentially equivocated "loving your wife/husband" to "loving Jesus and God" - and this shit *infuriated* me. NOTHING should be more important than your wife/husband! Especially not some made-up mythical being that's *never* done anything provable for you! I absolutely DESPISE religion, specifically because it minimises everything else but itself - someone's feeling sick? "Pray" for them, instead of focusing on proper, proven medical care! Someone's feeling anxious? "Pray" for them, instead of soothing their worries and supporting them by _talking_ to them! A couple is getting married? Better make sure you love Jesus and God as much as you love each other, if not more than you love each other! Life not going well for you? It's not your fault, don't try improving, as it's "all God's plan for you"! ...As for my friend, well...I haven't exactly spoken to him in years, as we just fell out of touch. I do appreciate having his friendship for so many years, but we've both moved on, moved apart. Oh well.
"Jesus above everything else" That line there , what whould people say if I said that ? What whould people say if I called them sinners for not putting my will above everyone else and making them feel guilty for not wanting that ? They whould call me a narcissist , or some ego-driven control freak . But God ? Nah he can do that and people call him "selfless and loving" Christianity is about freedom . Freedon from any desire that god doesnt want you to have , freedom from any autonomy , freedom from not being constantly controlled like a puppet by an omnipotent , omniscient being with ego issues
Man, listening to this just made me so incredibly sad for the people still stuck in Christianity. My aunt never married the love of her life because of his previous divorce, or a friend who's now past the age of procreation and she never had kids because she didn't want to run the risk of her offspring going to hell. So much opportunity and joy wasted. Just so so sad. Thanks for this sad but necessary video friend!
Thanks very much for this excellent video Brandon. I especially appreciated the bit on Nietzsche at the very end. I think Nietzsche understood Christianity very well. In his book "The Joyful Science" he mentions how monotheism, such as in the Christian religion, propagated the idea of only one norm (or standard of behaviour) for all human beings - and all other norms were rejected. This norm presumably would be that of being "christ-like" or whatever the monotheistic god happened to be. Also, as I am sure you know, religion will likely always have a place in human society. I doubt it will ever disappear. So only a few will have the courage and temerity to question their beliefs, religions, dogmas and norms of their society. It is to be the exception, not the rule, that matters. Nietzsche was not writing for everyone, but the few who - like yourself and other enlightened individuals - are willing to question, seek knowledge, overcome themselves and affirm the world (whether with or without god). So do not be disheartened if your videos and words do not reach everyone's ears and hearts - the fact that even a few can be inspired means a lot. Thanks again.
A few weeks ago I felt like I needed to gain my “soul” back from the metaphorical “chains” of having given myself over to jesus when I was a child. One person helped me do so and did an opposite of the “do you accept jesus as your lord” thing. It was instead a(n) “do you renounce god, jesus the Holy Spirit, in all their forms?” Of course I answered yes I definitely renounce it. But it was a great mental exercise for me. It allowed me to regain a part of my self that I had chained away when I didn’t really understand why. I feel so much better now being whole. It was definitely more freeing than chaining myself to a mythology that I didn’t fully understand as a kid-especially when I was pressured to do it rather than making my own choice in the matter.
Regarding point 3 in the psychological issues, it's not _just_ that they convince themselves to defer their morals and decisioning to God. It's that “God” is just a voice in their heads-generated by their own brain, yet they've been conditioned to think it's exterior to them-so they feel justified in assuming that their morals and values are _God's_ morals and values. Thus they feel justified in demanding everyone else live by them too; they think challenging their values is tantamount to blasphemy; and they sincerely believe that without “God”, they'd have no mortality at all-so everyone who isn't a Christian _can't_ have morality since “God” to them is the part of their brain that generates their morals and values.
So when you say that morals are just chemicals in our brains, then why not encourage Brandon to say that in every video? Every time he complaints about slavery, tell him to say that it's just chemicals in our brain.
@@computationaltheist7267 what? I never said that. Your morals and values come from your own brain. They aren't “just chemicals”, they're states of mind informed by your culture, your family, and your own personal judgments. They certainly don't come from a god external to yourself. Your god is just a compartment of your subconsciousness. It's the part of your brain that tells you whether you're living up to your own ideals-and it judges if other people are living up to them as well. Every neurotypical person has that part of their mind; you just think it's your god. As for Brandon, he's a grown-ass adult. I'm not gonna tell him what to say. And ultimately, sure. Empathy is just a brain state. We value it because we value it. If we didn't value it, we'd have gone extinct-or we'd have survived but would have become something fundamentally different than what we are now. Empathy exists because it's how _H. sapiens_ survived. And as we gain a better perspective on ourselves, most of us realize that all sapiens deserve dignity. It's subjective, but all morality is subjective, and that's okay.
Why do men fight for their servitude as stubbornly as if it were their own salvation? How can people possibly reach the point of shouting “More taxes! Less bread!”?…The astonishing thing is not that some people steal or that others occasionally go on strike, but rather that all those who are starving do not steal as a regular practice, and all those who are exploited are not continually out on strike. Deleuze & Guattari, “Anti-Oedipus”
Speaking about slavery or being owned. There is one animal which never ceases to amaze me and that is: The Cat! Often owned by a human and by that the human's property and YET the human often enough turned out to be the servant of the cat.😂
Around 33-35 mins is absolute 🔥🔥🔥 i really enjoy Gavin Ortlund's videos, in that he seems to have a more nuanced perspective than a lot of Christians on youtube. But his slavery video and your response to it made me question how he could go that far with logic that doesn't add up. But i was in it too, so i have to reflect on that. And he seems to say the quiet part out loud often, as he talks about soothing intellectual anxiety (EXACTLY what i sought time and again while struggling with my faith). Your channel has been instrumental in my journey and i will keep coming back!
Even in domestic abuse situations it's very common that the victim doesn't see it as abuse until someone external points it out, or after the relationship has ended and they are looking back.
“Me trying to open the door and say ‘Look your free! This god isn’t even here anyways, you put the chains on and you can take them off’” - But they choose to stay in their little box. I’m a former Jehovah’s Witness and this whole video perfectly sums up so much of what it’s like to be in it. And how very sad and embarrassing it is to see all the people staying in that little box, even when someone tries to show them the open door….
Please continue with this subject. I listen to a lot of evangelical preachers online, and this idea of being worthless and only redeemed through being bound to Jesus is so prevalent. I wasn't raised with it, and it is very strange to me. The idea that someone doesn't need their complicated structure of deals and rules is just as foreign to them, it seems. They disdain anyone who doesn't sign on to it as sinful and conceited. Seeing children being raised in this trap really upsets me.
Keep thinking! Do your own research! Dig deep! The truth is available! Freedom is available! I know you are preaching to the choir for the majority of us on your channel, but we can all hope that someone in the chains of religion will grasp this truth, and begin their own journey towards love and freedom! Thank you for living out an excellent example of a loving, thinking, caring human being!
Hey Brandon, I would love to see a video talking about people with disabilities and how they can be vulnerable to religion or if it's possible they can fall into the trap of religion. I'm Autistic and I fell for religion since childhood but was on and off of believing till September 2023. Thank you for helping me figuring myself out.
Also want him to talk about how the heck christians are supposed to reconcile the countless amount of people with physical clear disabilities (and born with them) seemingly never being shown to ever being healed.
This mentality is not just slave/servant to "god" but it also is spread into the social "hierarchy" as they had for example god-church-king-husband-wife-children etc and then the other social leaders, etc forming a top down hierarchical society of compliant obedience and servitude all ultimately in the name of "god"
A slave mentality is spread all throughout the Christian belief system: Humans are to be slaves to God and authorities, women are to be to their husbands, children are slaves to their parents. Of course, it’s not couched in terms of slavery but of ‘submission’ and ‘obedience’ - if people don’t submit, then everything will descend into chaos, believers will say It is possible to serve others without being a slave, to be drawn by love and care, not obligation to doctrine Thanks again, Brandon
Fantastic video! I'm looking forward to part 2 (and maybe part 3? I'd love to hear more about Nietzche). Thanks for more stuff to think about. There is so much there to tie into the trauma we feel when we leave the faith.
Luke 14:26 always terrified me as a kid. My parents had separated when I was small, and though neither my mother or father intended it to be that way, I felt torn apart over who I should love more. Along comes Jesus, the god/man I was raised to love and trust say that I have to outright HATE the people who loved and raised me to win his favor. It tied me in knots as a child, and I would actually pray to God the Father that his Son wouldn’t show up in person and DIRECTLY order me to hate and abandon my family and friends. One moment Jesus was a loving shepherd, the next he was a boogeyman with a hideous command. As I got older, I realized it was some Christian scribe’s version of a devil’s pact. I left behind the specter of Jesus to be with my family and the woman I dearly love and have made a home for two and a half decades. For anyone who has a child, do NOT let this boogeyman Jesus, or any other boogeyman, show up to twist their emotions into knots!
“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we've been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We're no longer interested in finding out the truth. Isn't it rather telling that back in the medieval era, when the church was at the height of it's power, they literally put themselves at the top of society? They were also the most strict and brutish then, power does not corrupt, it reveals.
I always found it very telling that the New Testament verse that says "slaves obey your masters" is immediately followed by the author analogizing the relationship between man and God to that of the slave and the master. When I first read about Nietzsche's master and slave morality I found it to be a really scathingly accurate critique of Chrisitianity, but in reality it's a fairly obvious conclusion that anyone would come to if they actually just read the Bible

I don't care if people still believe that jesus is returning what i do care about is what they do because of that belief

Agree! The Abrahamic religions have informed the way we do society, via education and threats.

George Orwell didn’t warn us about 💩. It was the Third Reich & the USSR that warned us, and from which he produced the novel to begin with.

Oh man, i feel ya on all that! So hard to hear that nonsense.
Well said.
I'm stuck living with religious parents. Their house, their rules. As soon as I get my own place to live I will assert that I no longer feel the right to be unreasonably submissive.
Good for you, letting go of indoctrination and finding who you really are can be a little uncomfortable.
Freedom requires responsibility. You are responsible for your own happiness, and I KNOW you can handle it.

I object to the "old wives' tales" part of the Dreiser quote-- it was really the "old men's tales", wives did not benefit from this! But otherwise, great quotes to burn into my mind.
@@andrewwilson9183 Why? Because it says so? In pantheistic traditions, there isn't this kind of mindless obedience, it's more like a relationship with a quality.
Thank you for this feedback and that quote!
@@MindShift-Brandon Glad I got that in there.
We usually reply to Pascal's Wager with a "what about other religions?" But this video is an excellent representation of the other answer, the one that really rocked my world!

Yup! NAILED IT!!! Hi Brandon yeah you definitely nailed it and I've been saying this for years! You took all the word's right outta my mind!

Glad to help vocalize! Thank you
The fact that the Bible requires you to blindly believe it's true without providing irrefutable empircal evidence of its supposed truth, throwing away logic and reason, makes me feel like a slave, if I were to believe it.
You do know the Bible encourages healthy skepticism, right?
Don't buy that? Check out these verses:
Debut 18:22, 1 John 4:1-3, Gal 1:8.
Those are just starters proving how wrong you are
@@VictoriousCatholic This person is still right. Those verses do not say be wary of the Bible itself. It’s to be wary of other things besides the Bible.
I was just about to comment that, lol. These passages talk about being aware of false teachers, not to question God's word.@@ThanosDestroyeryearsago
@@ThanosDestroyeryearsago wrong. He's saying the Bible teaches blind obedience, which it Does not.
I have several more examples showing you're wrong, a good one being Scripture alone refutes Scripture Alone
It tells you you are a broken wretch worthy of Hell if not for Jesus's "sacrifice."
What more evidence do you want?
This is one that I've heard some arguments for over the years. Many Christians believe we are all slaves to something. Slave to drugs, slave to sex, etc. Essentially "a slave to sin." and that we only have one way to escape it, and that's to become "slaves to righteousness." There always seems to be this undertone of submission throughout the texts. It's supposed to be submission to `God,` but in practice, it ends up being submission to the church. Pretty convenient.
Indeed! And how said to believe that we all have to be slaves to something in the first place.
I would ❤ to be A Slave to Sex with 1 Pretty Wife of Choice- but I've Never had Her, and though I've Prayed and Prayed and worked and fought and waited for Marriage being Stickley raised in the Church. Since I'm Not Allowed 1 Pretty Wife ( 😢Apparently), I'll Happily be a slave to my 2-Stroke Motorcycles, My 70MPH SEADOO 's and my 2 Wonderful Dogs 🐕 💖. Which is a Golden Retriever Boy and Great Pyrenees Boxer Mix Girl
Just brilliant, as always. It never fails to surprise me how well each video stands on its own. Each contains enough info to evaluate the evidence and confidentiality begin the deconstruction process. ❤❤❤

Thanks for another great Sunday "sermon"!
My pleasure! Appreciate the kind support big time!
I look forward to these videos every Sunday. I’m sad that I wasted so many of my Sundays in the indoctrination stations aka church, but taking them back and truly enjoying my Sundays has been one of the best lifestyle changes I’ve made this year.
Love to be a part of that. Thank you!
Church: indoctrination station....
I am so using this!
I remember when I was a christian saying things like "I'm unworthy of God's love. I don't deserve to be forgiven of my sins. I'm an evil, lost sinful wretch who deserves to burn in hell for eternity, but thanks to this perfect all-loving God, I, a lowly evil human being, can be saved by believing and being baptized for the remission of my sins since God loved me so much he sent his to die, ane resurrected on the third day."
There's nothing wrong with being human.
Yes!!!
Its insane.

@@SeekingTruth2023 Greetings to you from the USA. I'm jealous you live in a more secular country.
Thank you for sharing! What a hard road. Just keep learning. Once you see how manmade and fallible the bible is, it becomes all too clear.
A boss is a system of mistrust... nature does not have a boss, yet it flourishes.

@@Jcs57 Thank you your reply, it is much appreciated.
I believe our species could be so much more if we could just get off our knees.
Just in time for my morning wake and bake walk 🥰

Thanks!👍
Insanely kind and generous. Thank you so much for this support! Glad you feel the channel is worth it.

Thank you so much for that!
Thanks for clarifying this! How often have I heard Christians say things like: "Without God I wouldn't have meaning in my life. I wouldn't have any reason at all not to hurt other people. Love, family, justice, everything would be gone." But I hadn't really connected this up to a slave mentality.
Isn’t it so very clear and sad. One you see it, you cannot see it any other way
@@MindShift-BrandonI also find that mindset bizarre.
We are but a part of the whole and when this form is no longer sustainable it will be consumed for recycling and our atoms that were here from the beginning will continue on until the end ever present ever changing.
When asked from where do I get my morality, I say "My D&D alignment." :)

The late great Christopher Hitchens would wholeheartedly concur💔💔

This reminds me of how the nazis managed to maintain control over their concentration camps.
Why were camp revolts so rare, even though the SS-Totenkopfverbande was sending their men to the frontlines via the 3rd SS Division Totenkopf? Because of the Kapos, which were prisoners of the camp that kept watch over the other prisoners.
That's literally it, prisoners watching prisoners at the orders of their nazi masters.
Thanks for all your support and work
I appreciate these videos so much.
Well you said all this very well! Appreciate ya right back and thanks for sharing!
Omg, THIS. It's what triggers me into fury when I run into these obnoxious social media proselytizers claiming this incredible connected transcendent LSD-like experience of communing with Jesus in their Very Special Personal Relationship with Him. Most definitely Christianity is deeply rooted in slave mentality.

"Jesus above everything else"
That line, right there?
Oh well.
"Jesus above everything else"
That line there , what whould people say if I said that ? What whould people say if I called them sinners for not putting my will above everyone else and making them feel guilty for not wanting that ?
They whould call me a narcissist , or some ego-driven control freak . But God ? Nah he can do that and people call him "selfless and loving"
Christianity is about freedom .
Great but tragic examples. It’s a thief!
😞😢😔
Excellent video! I actually had not thought of this specific correlation before.
Glad to give you something new to think on
Thanks very much for this excellent video Brandon.
Love the feedback, insight, and generosity. Thank you!
Another grand slam out of the park Brandon..... Thank you.
Glad to hear it. Thank you!!
A few weeks ago I felt like I needed to gain my “soul” back from the metaphorical “chains” of having given myself over to jesus when I was a child.
One person helped me do so and did an opposite of the “do you accept jesus as your lord” thing.
It was instead a(n) “do you renounce god, jesus the Holy Spirit, in all their forms?”
Of course I answered yes I definitely renounce it.
Good point as well :)
Oh my. SO true.
Quite truthfully this may have been the greatest, most brillant video I've ever seen
I absolutely loved it. Thanks for your efforts to keep at least some of us making proper use of our brains😊
So glad to hear! Thank you
Why do men fight for their servitude as stubbornly as if it were their own salvation? How can people possibly reach the point of shouting “More taxes! Less bread!”?…The astonishing thing is not that some people steal or that others occasionally go on strike, but rather that all those who are starving do not steal as a regular practice, and all those who are exploited are not continually out on strike.

Speaking about slavery or being owned. There is one animal which never ceases to amaze me and that is:
The Cat!
Often owned by a human and by that the human's property and YET the human often enough turned out to be the servant of the cat.😂
Hey cat! Do you have a license for this human?
Helll yeaahhh, new mindshift video!!!! ill listen to it as i work for uni :3
Thanks so much!
Thanks so much for this very thoughtful feedback!
One of my favorite episodes so far. Thanks for covering this!
My pleasure. Thanks for being here!
@@MindShift-Brandon You're so welcome!! Of course!
Wow! I heckin love this one. Really insightful and thought provoking discussion today. Thank you for your hard work ❤
Yes please to a part two 😊
Very glad to hear it. Thank you!
Thanks for this very kind encouragement!
So glad to have been of any help and yes, great topic idea
Also want him to talk about how the heck christians are supposed to reconcile the countless amount of people with physical clear disabilities (and born with them) seemingly never being shown to ever being healed.
@@jojobizarrelivingstone594 Well, I could encapsulate that for you: they'd probably fall back on "god's will, too great for us to understand".
Of course, it’s not couched in terms of slavery but of ‘submission’ and ‘obedience’ - if people don’t submit, then everything will descend into chaos, believers will say
It is possible to serve others without being a slave, to be drawn by love and care, not obligation to doctrine
Thanks again, Brandon
Well said! Thanks for adding in
Fantastic video! I'm looking forward to part 2 (and maybe part 3? I'd love to hear more about Nietzche). Thanks for more stuff to think about. There is so much there to tie into the trauma we feel when we leave the faith.
Thank you!
Wonderful research and masterful presentation. Thank You!
So nice to hear. Thank you!
Slavery is Freedom. Now in which other work of dystopian fiction have I heard such a phrase before?
and war is peace, lies are truth
“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we've been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We're no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It is simply too painful to acknowledge -- even to ourselves - that we've been (taken.) so credulous. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back. (So the old bamboozles tend to persist as the new bamboozles rise.)” - Carl Sagan (in other words, when someone is “In Too Deep” they no longer care about the truth. Instead, they care more about keeping that lie/belief alive) - that is called: Sunk Cost Fallacy
Always good to get a notification from Mind Shift.
It relaxes me
Thanks so much! Glad to hear it.
Subscribed, liked, loved, all alerts. This is my first view of your channel and I can't wait to see more. Glad to hear from a fellow thinker who isn't afraid to question the forbidden, the thou shat not be questioned, and the contradictions.
Peace and Blessings to you. 💚
So kind, man! Hope you enjoy everything else here just as much as thatks for the support!
Isn't it rather telling that back in the medieval era, when the church was at the height of it's power, they literally put themselves at the top of society? They were also the most strict and brutish then, power does not corrupt, it reveals.
I think power reveals, but it can also corrupt. Although, I'm open to you changing my mind.

Really? It caught me hook line and sinker. So did the talking donkey lol, When I was 4 off coarce.
