Last night, I dreamt that I was back at the church in Mexico where I preached for about a year, but instead of preaching on the gospels behalf, I was preaching against it. Then everybody was trying to tell me how God is love. I then told them to tell that to the Midianites, the people of Jericho, Ai, Egypt, the Amlikites, and so on.
I don't remember their reaction, but that was what I dreamt.

“If you believe your God is all powerful, he should never have tied hands”. This statement is my biggest reason why a god like the one described in the Bible cannot exist.
If you created everything, have foreknowledge on how every outcome you create will go, and it’s within your power to create the exact reality you want, you must assume that this reality is the exact reality Bible God wanted… but that makes him a liar (which he claims never to do) for stating that it’s his desire that no one is separated from him in hell. How is that your true desire when you deliberately chose to make a world in which that isn’t possible, despite the ability to make the actual reality you wanted (aka heaven, where people will be perfect and sinless forever; demonstrating that it is a possibility despite any free will argument)…
For me, it not merely “I don’t believe in God anymore”, it’s the fact that I realized that the God of the Bible as he’s described by the “god-breathed”, infallible word, cannot exist. Such a God requires a very particular outcome in creation, which we clearly don’t have.

I actually agree to the general sentiment to at least _some_ degree, but for reasons that certainly hadn't ever crossed the minds of the authors of any of those scriptures. My main reason is pretty much based on my view that there isn't, and actually can't be, anything resembling what most people mean with "free will". I can't make even halfway as good a case for that view here as Sam Harris does in a couple of talks, so I won't try.
Another, smaller, but nowhere near negligible reason is how fallible we can be in our judgement, meaning that I could be seen (falsely or to _some_ degree accurately) as an "enemy" by someone else from my society, so I'd rather promote that view in case I should ever be on the receiving end. Plus of course the whole thing that rehabilitation works *_so_* much better than punishment/vengeance.

    • @59master60
      @59master60 8 місяців тому +9

Agreed, considering the fact that people become the way that they are because of the environment around them that influences people’s mental development and perspective on things. No one has control over where they are born, and how they are molded. No one deserves eternal punishment because of circumstances. We may have control over our actions, but we never have control over how we develop, especially at a young age.

Forget loving your enemies. This god doesn't even bother acting like the Good Samaritan. He is the Greatest Bystander in The Universe, as he watches and witnesses all the suffering in the world and does nothing.
There are many people suffering right now, dying and being persecuted, both believers and non believers, and the best he can do is supposedly send his fallen delegates rather than intervening himself. Yes let's use victims of suffering as a teachable moment for the delegates to strengthen their faith. We stop being people like this, we become products of value, defined by how great our faith is.

And it got me thinking, “Since forgiveness is commanded and heralded as so good, why does God need us to believe in him and ask for forgiveness before he’ll forgive us?”
That was the first time I realized that the foundation of the salvation system is fundamentally flawed and God couldn’t possibly exist as described because no all powerful or omnibenevolent being would set up this system.

We are also not on the same level as God nor the Angels (the elephant in the room). And the major distinction between mortals and immortals is time itself. Time itself is the antidote to evil (what humans would describe as evil). So given enough time it is reasonable to conclude that all evil can be defeated. And if there is plenty of time there needs to be very little laws to be administered to manage and to curtail evil doings.
So then if God is immortal and immortality for the most part does the good then why around 100yrs for the human being? In the mage and likeness of god??? Hardly. I mean ok makes much more sense if we are just some sort of entertainment for the gods if arrows and bullets don't kill then my oh my there goes half the drama! The "Gods" cannot have that! Another aspect is the God(s) is just a scientist but then God is a Deity that winds up the universe and let's it play out never interfering only observing and taking notes.
From where I'm looking at it we (humans) got the short end of the divine stick. And the adulations, prayers going to such a god is really undeserved. God says NOTHING about immortality. There is violence and war and destruction and mayhem and oh yes peace as well wherein the women of the tribe hope to give birth to lots of messiahs. That's not a world that I want to imagine and live in. In reality there is space to explore (also in FDVR - because space exploration can get dangerous) and go on (peaceful) conquering (ie seeding life-less planets with life) the galaxy and universe. Plus emperor Jesus of the Milky Way Galaxy beats King of the Earth Jesus any day!

There is a bit of a problem when God's punishments are being defended as destroying evil.
When good and evil are literally defined with God as the standard, God becomes justified in doing whatever he wants, whenever he wants.
When God "destroys evil", we could just as well say he destroyed people he didn't like.
Putting the biblical God as the standard of good, only makes "good" into something horrific.
Putting God as the standard for love, only gets worse.

Forgiveness is such a vague word it's problematic. If I forgive someone who harmed my kids accidentally, then ok, I'm acknowledging it's not in his nature to hurt my kids and it's healthy for all to let any negative feelings go. But if someone deliberately harms my kids because it's in their nature to do so - they are cruel, want power over us ...then where does forgiveness fit in and what does it mean? I can never say "it's ok, done is done," because the deliberate cruelty wasn't and never will be ok. It's important to recognize that or we set ourselves and more importantly, our kids in this case to tolerate more of the same. So to me, forgiveness isn't even an issue. It's more letting go of anger and hatred while acknowledging that the actions of some people are not to be tolerated and taking responsibility for making sure we protect ourselves and those we love from awful, harmful people and their actions. Don't have to hate them, but don't need to - and shouldn't - say what they did was ok or even that we are ok with it now.

Being and able and willing to move on without resentment and hate eating away at you etc. i do not believe we owe anyone forgiveness in the acceptance kind of way, but i do see amazing value in understanding the realities that lead them to where they are and not excusing the behavior but seeing it for what it is. If a tornado hit my house tomorrow, i wouldnt be angry at it or try to get it back. I wouldnt be happy about it either or wish for another. Brandon, I would love a series where you show how a story in the Bible could not have happened, because of what we know in Archeology. Anytime someone mentions Exodus and the ridiculous Egyptian story, I roll my eyes so hard I get a headache. The date for the Exodus that the Bible gives, with help from 1 Kings 6:1, is 1446/7 BCE. This puts it smack dab in the 18th dynasty and the reign of Thutmose III, and the story in the Bible does align with archeology from that time.
Exodus 12:37-38 informs us there were 600,000 men who left Egypt. Add in the wives, children, elderly, and tag-alongs and a conservative estimate is 2.5 million. Further, population estimates for Egypt at that time are less than 4 million. So we'd expect to see a loss of over 1/2 the population... almost all the workforce. Further, there's the plagues. The Nile turns to blood, disease, famine, death by hail, death of livestock, death of the firstborn. Hundreds of thousands, if not more, would have died from famine and other plagues. Then, you have pharaoh's entire army (Exodus 14:9) getting destroyed in the Red Sea... so that's the loss of an entire army and more of the population. It even seems the pharaoh himself may be dead (14:28)
So a world power goes from ~ 4,000,000 to easily below 1,500,000... including their entire work force and entire army. And it appears pharaoh himself may be dead.
What evidence is there of this happening in archeology? Nothing. Which also means, the tablets with the Ten Commandments story and the Ark of the Covenant is also pure fiction.

As a believer, it became so exhausting trying to make this make sense. Especially because i was an evangelist, so these things came up often.
I remember one gentleman asked such a simple question, it was actually profound. He asked, "Why can't God just forgive?"
I think i said something about God is just, and sin can't go unpunished.
But that doesn't really make sense either, because God is the arbiter of morality. So, if God just forgave us, that WOULD be justice.

Hello Brandon, I'm not new to visiting your channel, but I've been doing a lot of catch up viewing over the last month or two (so new-ish). Your presentation of yourself is fascinating, in that you seem to have a very doggedly logical focus. Yet you still address the emotionally frustrating aspects of the Christian religion, and vocalize many things in a kind of dispassionately passionate way.
I've been drawn to your channel because of the ruthless logic that you employ to eviscerate confusing aspects of the Bible, the contradictions, and hypocrisy of the character of God. I like that you say in a measured way things that my own mind has been screaming inside my head for a decade and more; "It's unfair." "It's unjust." "This is not the actions of a loving God." One of my favorites are in light of the definition of God as all powerful, all knowing, and all good; and you put the charge on God; "This is God's responsibility, not my problem" is really quite refreshing to hear, I don't think I've thought that one myself, in the to-the-point way you say it.
I like how you address mental well-being and a need for self-confidence balance with self-reflection; not going overboard with the practice of self-flagellation. I have to wonder sometimes if it's even dangerous to read to Bible and saturate oneself with toxic thought processes.
One of the things that is most frustrating is the impression that God (and his followers) will always give credit to God for anything good that the human race accomplishes (something about atheists are still doing good in God's name, or something like that); and humans get the blame for anything bad that happens, and God's responsibility for bad things is ignored or glossed over or explained away. It's only in recent years that I have been aware of that very damning Bible quote where God does take credit for creating evil.
Do you have any videos that address that tendency to give credit for all good things away to God, and trying to make sure that only the human race shoulders the blame for anything bad?
Thank you for doing your videos; the time and work that you put into them.

Thanks for this one today .This was at the forefront on the beginnings of my journey. I don't think forgiveness is necessarily an automatic, simple or easy thing, in reality. I used to think I was a bad person if I didn't forgive regardless of whatever harm someone caused. I've worked on forgiving myself most especially, and at least letting things go so that they no longer affect my life in a negative way. It can be more beneficial when you need to accept that you must move ahead even when you don't get an apology, which can certainly happen. One of many things that has been incredibly helpful to me in all these years is developing boundaries. Some people may dislike you for having them. I can be a loving, caring, helpful human being with values, but I've had to learn to thicken my skin quite a bit. Looking forward to the next one. God is a force of nature and not a person in the way we think that isn't bothered by our silly creature thoughts, habits and actions, it is above such things. Religions like any other man-made construct complicates things and we are victims of our own structures and inflated self importance. As flawed as human agency is, there are, as you say, healthy boundaries and nuance when it comes to enemies or just life in general. The bible seems to be a guide on how to justify crappy behavior while being righteous at the same time. Just my thoughts.

I know it's not the main point of the video but I think you brought out a really good point I never really thought about. The NT is full of reward-driven commandments. It breeds selfishness, despite its focus on doing good things for other people. It's all about doing good things so that you get a reward instead of doing them because it's a nice thing to do. It doesn't focus on empathy and understanding, just "what can I get out of this". I wonder if that would make a good video on its own, just talking about how selfish the NT morality and "works" are. Of course it kinda makes sense though. The NT mindset was that the end was coming very soon so affecting the wider society in a good way wasn't a concern. It was bettering yourself and ensuring the best outcome for yourself in the afterlife.

You are probably too young, but about 30 years ago, there was a talented musician by the name of Kurt Cobain. He was a millionaire with legions of adoring fans. He had a wife and a baby he dearly loved, yet his slogan was, "I hate myself and want to die." Now, if a person can be so tormented as a rock star, imagine hell, where there is only human depravity. God is love and eternity without love is hell by definition.
Have you ever stolen anything or told a lie? There are no lying thieves in heaven! Yet, Christ died on a Cross so that you may be made new, born again.

@@dasbus9834 Just think about it logically, the cycle of cultural corruption: greatness, corruption, destruction. People can get really evil. In hell, subtract God and every form of justice (e.g. do not take the police for granted - corrupt as human justice is). You cannot say that I did not warn you. The fact is that many people are in torment as life on this earth is a small taste of hell. I am saying that the only cure is Christ. He died on a Cross so that lying thieves can be worthy of heaven. Hell is a horror story, but it is a true story! I hope you get to know Christ.

Not to turn this into a different kind of channel, but we are talking about a supposedly all-knowing all-powerful perfect being who just cannot stick to anything that he says, not even for himself, and frequently, if not always, leaves his followers - and even his own son (who apparently also believes himself to be his father) - hanging as he gathers money and power solely for himself in order to set everything on fire in the end for a completely untenable final project, only to now see that likely inadvertently, said followers are leaving him hanging in return as they continue to claim to obey everything he says, and "everything" just so happens to always involve hating anyone and everyone who ain't them and committing acts of un-aliving of people (often including themselves). Oh yeah, and there is also a book that supposedly contains this being's "divine" word and commands, only to be found out that the being had no input at all in writing it, that it was entirely written by ghostwriters that we will probably never learn the real identities of, and that none of his followers - or himself, for that matter - ever read it.
Why does all of this sound familiar? And why do my eyes keep panning towards the state of New York? Are my eyes telling me something? 🤔

@@heavenbound7-7-7-7 Danny was very specific. If you believe that hell is only separation from God and does not involve any actual torture, then what is there to argue against? Or do you believe it IS torture, but you refuse to call it that because it makes your feelings itchy? Better to call it separation, it sounds so much nicer than Eternal Conscious Torment, a phrase that is absolutely used to describe what the Bible says awaits us.
But more to your point, sure, if you think hell is justice rather than love, then let's do it again: If letting criminals commit their crimes with impunity until they die, then punishing them afterwards with no chance of rehabilitation is what you or God call "justice", then I want nothing to do with "justice".
Your definition, when we look at how God interacts with the modern world, shows clear as day that God is doing nothing to prevent crime, doing nothing to protect the innocent, and instead waits until the criminals have had their fun before finally showing up and saying that NOW is their time to be punished, after they can already do no more harm to anyone else, because they're already dead.
What good is a punishment that doesn't stop bad people from doing bad things, and doesn't stop good people from getting hurt? What is even the point? To balance the karmic scales? Because the solution to pain and suffering is to cause pain and suffering back to them? Show me how that benefits ANYONE in ANY way. Even under an annihilationist view, there are no benefits to anyone. But at least then you don't also heap an infinite amount of extra harm onto the pile.
Justice that doesn't benefit anyone is useless, no matter how pleasant and desirable of a word it is. Actions are what matter, not just words.

In an adult study class, we were told that the 3 acts of submission were not suggestions from Jesus, but Roman laws for conquered people and slaves. As an overlord a Roman could slap a lower class individual, demand their cloak, or demand that their bags be carried a certain distance. We were told that Jesus instructed his followers to do more than was asked of them, give twice as much, go twice as far, and treat others better than they expected. The pastor made the point that Jesus was teaching his followers how to love a neighbor and how to love an enemy. From a distance, this sounds like a good thing, but up close, it seems to me to reek of something Jesus may have said earlier in his preaching, but was re-written to fit post Roman conquering of Jerusalem. Possibly that the Jewish followers of Jesus should adopt and maintain a slave mentality in the presence of Romans, but adding the half again rule would make them look better than the Romans without being obviously offensive. Call it love.

Jesus Christ was merely expressing what God the Father agrees with in a different way because it's a different era, why is He doing this? It's because if you believe that God sees the possibilities and understands that if He does this choice it goes here if He does that choice it goes there then He saw that this choice was the best choice from the perspective of a fallen world now, that's why Jesus Christ didn't immediately come right after Adam and Eve sinned.

Elijah’s prayer for no rain was not just something he cooked up out of his own imagination or because he was angry at Jezebel. Rather, he was acting on the truth of the Word. He was standing firmly on the promises. His prayer and statement to King Ahab were the result of knowing and believing the promises of Scripture (cf. Deut. 11:8-32; 28:23-24 with 1 Kgs. 18:18. This shows that Elijah was relying on the principles of Deut. 11). Remember, the prophets of Baal claimed Baal-Melqart was the god of thunder, rain, and good crops. Elijah’s declaration in 1 Kings 17:1 strongly challenged the reality of their god and their faith. It showed Baal was false and impotent and that the prophets of Baal were liars. It also showed truth and salvation could only be found in the prophets of Yahweh who alone spoke for God. This is the misunderstanding of the scripture of Matthew 5:45 vs 1 Kings 17:1 one is personal the other is not. 👍❤️🙏
