I'd love to see you in a face to face conversation (not debate) with IP. I always think that these more intellectual apologists know on some level that they're lying and I wonder how far their rationales would stretch in an honest conversation with a calm and rational interlocutor. I'll never know, but I wonder how far my rationales would have stretched if I'd ever had someone to really push me to confront these problems when I was still a Christian. I eventually stumbled into it on my own, but I wonder if I could have escaped my indoctrination sooner in this type of a conversation.
      Keep up the great work!

You must not always take the Bible at face value and with your own knowledge because your emotional state may determine what you perceive it to mean versus trying to understand the word of God from Gods perspective alone. To take it from Gods perspective you must also understand the Spiritual gleanings interwoven throughout it. Too many pick up the Bible as non believers in God and attempt to understand it from their non believing perspective and it doesn’t make much sense to them.

    • @njhoepner
      @njhoepner 7 місяців тому +21

@@davidrexford586 God, supposedly, is transcendent and completely above us (Isaiah 55: 8-9), so taking the bible from God's perspective would be impossible for a human (just like the excuse apologists use to dodge the problem of evil, "well, you don't know if that was really evil because you don't have God's perspective). You can't have it both ways - either god's perspective is beyond us, or it isn't.
In any case, it's not like the bible is so complex that it can only be understood by a perfect mind. It's bronze-age simple. It requires interpretation because 1) it's incoherent; and 2) the religion evolves over time, so the believers have to go back and reinterpret their bible to keep up with the times...just like any other product of human imagination.

Ishmael is born at the summer solstice; Ishmael was the genius of winter, because born when the days begin to shorten. He was the precursor of Isaac, and bore the same relation to him as John the Baptist did to Jesus Christ. Ishmael and Isaac were the same as Esau and Jacob. Isaac was the younger. Like Jacob, he came forth clinging to the heels of his brother, as summer always follows winter. The summer solstice to the winter solstice is called decrease (down). Increase (up) is the winter solstice to the summer solstice. These two solstices are the two Jerusalems in Galatians 4.

Time and again, God was neutral to people in his favour, that had multiple wives, and not to mention the murder of 200 people, and their mutilation. A caring and all loving God would never be neutral to these things. He even sent a bear to kill a group of children because they made fun of a bald guy, who was in his favour. It can't be real, if there is a God, he just made the universe because he got bored, and left it to run.

    Hello
I started backsliding in my faith about a month ago, and now the past few days I've started questioning everything in my faith, watching videos from you and Kristi Burke, and I just feel so lost right now.
I started reading the bible in August 2022 and it completely changed my whole life, I was "born again", I worshipped and loved God, was super passionate about reading scripture, I no longer delighted in my previous sins. I stopped having sex with my boyfriend, looking at pornography, getting drunk, cussing like a sailor, taking God's name in vain, etc. I even left this man I love and had an *amazing* relationship with, because the bible told me not to be unequally yoked. Leaving him was the most heart wrenching thing I ever did, but I felt that God wanted me to because I was being disobedient by staying in a relationship with someone who wasn't as passionate about God as I was. (Thankfully, he and I got back together a month ago.. and since then I have been straying from God.)
My whole walk with God I've felt nothing but shame, guilt, fear. (I didn't grow up in the church btw). I can't even tell you how extremely tormented I've been over my own salvation doubts. Seriously.. Non-stop fear and doubt over my salvation. I've been so beyond sick of this fear for so long, and barely hanging onto my faith, but I HAVE to hold on, otherwise I'm going to be burning in hell forever. And that if I have salvation fears, that means I'm not trusting Jesus' work on the cross enough. I've just been so beyond exhausted for so long, and feeling EXTREME shame for minor sins. Thinking "If I'm truly saved then why do I keep doing the wrong thing? Why can't I just get it right? What's wrong with me? I'm such a disgusting sinner who deserves hell". I've been told I need to learn to receive God's grace that is freely given in Christ. That if I'm in Christ, God sees the perfection of Christ and not my sin, so I don't need to fear because his wrath for my sins was placed on Jesus. But.. how do I know for sure that I'm truly in Christ, that these promises apply to me, and that I'm not a "false believer"? When I've looked at people who have fallen away from the faith, it has honestly terrified me, because it makes me feel insecure about my own faith and salvation. And I think this is why people dismiss others as "never was a true believer" which I also used to say, yet here I am questioning everything, even though I have been 100% convinced previously that this is the truth.. I literally gave up my whole life to follow Jesus.
Although I've never been able to truly admit this to myself, I've never understood why God seems so different in the Old and New Testament. He seems so angry in the Old, and much more love in the New.
There is also a verse that says "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom". And Jesus says "Whoever commits sin is a slave of sin" and "If the Son sets you free, you shall be free indeed" but I've honestly felt anything but free since being a Christian.
Not to mention Matthew 11:28, that Jesus will give us true rest, but I've become exhausted.
Constantly examining if I'm bearing fruit of the Spirit and doing good works. Because I know that we are saved by grace through faith, but if your faith is true, then fruit and good works will show. Soooo.. it's become exhaustion.
I could keep going on and on, but this is already so long. Anyways just venting. I am just so lost right now. Because I do believe in a Creator, and a lot of things from the bible still. But I don't know right now
    Update: I've deconverted lol

All the ancient Egyptian stuff written in the Bible, like with Joseph, the Exodus, etc., is PURE fiction. Such events would have had huge amounts of evidence in Egyptian history to back it up. There is NOTHING in the archeological record. "Well they erased it," doesn't work. There are efforts of Egyptians trying to erase things from their history and they failed to do it. One pharaoh was so disliked, they destroyed every image of him and his wife and prohibited his name to be spoken, yet we know all about it today. If all the stuff in the Bible about Egypt were real, we would have a HUGE amount of archeological evidence. It was completely fabricated by ancient Hebrews.

Interesting. I mean there are some points which may connect them from what I have heard. First, I find it interesting that the common Egyptians somehow disliked the ancient Israelites which can be found here:
      Genesis 43:32
"32So they set the meal for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, because the Egyptians could not eat bread with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination to the Egyptians. "
      Genesis 46:33-34
"33And it will be when Pharaoh calls you and says, ‘What is your occupation?’ 34then you shall say, ‘Your servants have been keepers of livestock from our youth and until now, both we and our fathers,’ that you may live in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is an abomination to the Egyptians.”"
If it was just a small family then why would they truly dislike especially them? And then we have some other interesting things:
Joseph is known for his multi colored coat. The Hyksos had such clothing.
The Hyksos did not come to power by military actions. So did Joseph.
The Hyksos enslaved the Egyptians. So did Joseph.
The Hyksos were expelled from Egypt. So did the Israelites.
The Hyksos origin is not really known and no one knows what really happened to them afterwards.
The ancient Israelites origin is seemingly also not really known outside the religious texts.
The Hyksos were disliked by the Egyptians. So were the ancient Israelites.
The Hyksos robbed the Egyptians while being expelled. So did the ancient hebrews.
The Hyksos capital Avaris was located in the near the region of goshen.
      Genesis 47:27
"27Now Israel lived in the land of Egypt, in Goshen, and they took possession of property in it and were fruitful and became very numerous."
If I'm wrong about any of this points please correct me.

@@nezz0r the Hykos were like 1500 bc I think they're just a little bit too early to be the Hebrews but sure some of their descendants in the northern Egypt area could have started worshiping Yahweh you have to figure the collapse of the bronze Angels around 1200 BC And around 12 or 1300 BC in Egyptian stele we first mention that we have found about the Shashu of Yahweh could some the descendants of the Hykos and others that followed Aktenhaten have been groups that formed the Shashu and or the judahites, sure. No guarantees but it's a possibility.
Just remember the Israelites and the worshipers of Yahweh or different groups originally it seems as though most of people who were part of the Israelites and the northern kingdom their ancestors are from Mesopotamia and are other Canaanites, whereas it seems like the ancestors from those who worship Yahweh were southern Canaanites and or northern egyptians who could've got some of their ideas merged with the Canaanite especially as they moved north and ended up forming Judah

Well you could learn some interesting things from this allegory though.
For example if you have not just one but an entire tribe you could use the idea behind giving your women to kings to obtain "royal blood". If these women stay strongly associated with that tribe and teach that mindset to their children as well then you have essentially a foothold in that nation. And if you do that with multiple nations then you would had multiple footholds. Maybe after some generation your tribes-men would become pharaoh/king and by that you kind of rule the nations. That would kind of suit the idea of being the father of nations. You would have essentially foreign kings ruling different lands. Imagine how much power your group would wield. One land goes against you? Then you could use the others to cr[..]sh it. That would be an incredible strategy. Well it isn't truly backed by the text though because there the children came directly from abraham.

I think this touches on something I see occasionally from Christians. They will try to show you that God is all good/all loving. So they will point to things in the Bible where he shows love, acceptance, and forgiveness. However, when other contradictory passages are pointed out, they sometimes fall back to something along the lines of “God knows better than you, that thing he did really does cause the most good. You just can’t understand it since you’re not omniscient like he is.”
I can understand that. This world really might be the one with most good. Maybe God really did have to make the choices he did for some grand plan. But it can’t be both ways. You can’t say he is evidently all good, but also say where he doesn’t seem all good he really is you just have to trust. I don’t believe in this god. If you want to prove his existence to me by showing me he’s all good, his all goodness needs to be self evident to me.

Let's add some more context to the Joseph story:
    Genesis 41:33-36
"33So now let Pharaoh look for a man understanding and wise, and set him over the land of Egypt. 34Let Pharaoh take action and appoint overseers over the land, and let him exact a fifth of the produce of the land of Egypt in the seven years of abundance. 35Then let them gather all the food of these good years that are coming, and let them store up the grain for food in the cities under Pharaoh’s authority, and let them keep watch over it. 36And let the food be appointed for the land for the seven years of famine which will happen in the land of Egypt, so that the land will not be cut off during the famine.”"
That sounds wise at first to gather food so that you are prepared for an upcoming famine. But first let me remind you that the food was gathered from the common people. That is important later on. Now let's continue.
    Genesis 47:13-21
"13Now there was no food in all the land because the famine was very heavy, so that the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan languished because of the famine. 14And Joseph gathered all the money that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan for the grain which they bought, and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh’s house. 15Then the money came to an end in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan. So all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said, “Give us food, for why should we die in your presence? For our money is gone.” 16Then Joseph said, “Give up your livestock, and I will give you food for your livestock, since your money is gone.” 17So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them food in exchange for the horses and the flocks and the herds and the donkeys; and he fed them with food in exchange for all their livestock that year. 18Then that year came to an end. And they came to him the next year and said to him, “We will not hide from my lord that our money has come to an end, and the livestock are my lord’s. There is nothing left for my lord except our bodies and our land. 19Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for food, and we and our land will be slaves to Pharaoh. So give us seed, that we may live and not die, and that the land may not be desolate.”
20So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh, for every Egyptian sold his field because the famine was severe upon them. Thus the land became Pharaoh’s.21As for the people, he moved them to the cities from one end of Egypt’s border to the other end. "
There was a famine and he gathered before the famine happens much grain from the people. Now while the famine is happening he is gathering ALL the money that was found in Egypt and Canaan by SELLING them back THEIR own food until they had no money left. The common people ask for food again and what did Joseph tell them? Since they have no money because he has taken that from them he told them to give him their livestock. Remember the grain was gathered from the people and the money was also gathered from the people. It is originally their money and their grain and he sold that grain to them for their livestock. After the year has ended the people still had no money and need food. So what has happened now? They need to sell their home and even themselves as slaves. He literally used the famine to rob the common people of everything they have.
Also take notice that he completely removed them from their homes in (21). Like gathering a cattle-labor force into designed areas (cities).
Now let's take a look how the ancient Israelites are about to live. First let's look at the promise for them.
    Genesis 45:18
18and take your father and your households and come to me, and I will give you the best of the land of Egypt, and you will eat the fat of the land.’
As you can see the BEST of the land of Egypt is promised to them. Did that stay that way in the famine? Let's see.
    Genesis 47:6
" 6The land of Egypt is at your disposal; have your father and your brothers settle in the best of the land, let them settle in the land of Goshen; and if you know any excellent men among them, then put them in charge of my livestock.”"
Here the land is at their disposal. And they are now officially allowed to settle in the best of the land.
Remember the common Egyptians will own nothing any longer after verse 13-20. All land is owned by the Pharaoh except the land of the priests. Now let's take a look how the Israelites are living. And by the way I consider this Pharaoh a traitor to his own people.
    Genesis 47:27
"27Now Israel lived in the land of Egypt, in Goshen, and they took possession of property in it and were fruitful and became very numerous."
The Israelites took POSSESSION of the property in it while the Egyptians have NOTHING aside from the Pharaoh and the priests.
The famine was used to rip off the common people living in Egypt of everything they owned and worked for while his Israelites just moved in and took possession of the best of the land. With the help of the Pharaoh and the famine Joseph robbed the entire population of Egypt aside from the priests and at the same time took possession of the best parts of the land.
Maybe that could be a good enough reason why they reversed the situation later in the Exodus story.
But let's also take a look at the maybe excuse from the same chapter:
    Genesis 47:25
"25So they said, “You have kept us alive! Let us find favor in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh’s slaves.”"
Here you may say: Oh, look the common Egyptians are "thankful" since they survived the famine. True, but I think it is also necessary to understand that being in a crisis takes a massive mental burden on people. In short at that time they most likely only thought about survival. But what do you think will happen after everything calms down and that mental burden starts to lessen? Then they should become more and more aware that they lost everything and understand what it means to be slaves. Additionally they will also recognize that foreigners took property in their own land while they themselves are slaves in their own land. I mean it should be obvious that this will create massive problems. Take a look at today's world and see how people like it to be "colonized" or how people like mass migration. This is literally a mixture of both. No one can tell me that they just s[...]ck that up like it is nothing. And by the way did the Egyptians really like Joseph?
Let's take a look at this quote here:
    Genesis 43:32
"32So they set the meal for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, because the Egyptians could not eat bread with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination to the Egyptians. "
Isn't that interesting? Seemingly liked by the Pharaoh but not so much by the others.
Another interesting one. It seems like the Egyptians didn't like these people yet the Pharaoh again does.
Another thing to ask is: Why did the Pharaoh play along with this? I assume greed would be the best answer to this. For this let's recall:
    Genesis 47:14
"14And Joseph gathered all the money that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan for the grain which they bought, and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh’s house. "
Into whose house had the money being gathered? Into the Pharaoh's.
And to wrap it up let's take a look at the reason for the counter attack of the egyptians:
    Exodus 1:10
"1Now these are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob; they came each one with his household: 2Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah; 3Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin; 4Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. 5And all the persons who came from the loins of Jacob were seventy in number, but Joseph was already in Egypt. 6Then Joseph died, and all his brothers and all that generation. 7But the sons of Israel were fruitful and increased and multiplied and became exceedingly mighty, so that the land was filled with them.
8And a new king arose over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. 9And he said to his people, “Behold, the people of the sons of Israel are more and mightier than we. 10Come, let us deal wisely with them, lest they multiply and it be in the event of war, that they also join themselves to those who hate us and fight against us and go up from the land.”"
At the end I think we can say that:
*A crisis is the one of the best excuses to take the possessions of people away without violence.*
    ---
We might even argue that the ruling system after the famine might be something similar to a prototype version of communism. Everything in possessions of the rulers and no private property for the common people.

But when kids are being teased (both verbally and physically), when they are being called far worse names, where is the Lord then? I had a third grade teacher who had a reputation for singling out at least one student for harassment and encouraging the other students to go after that child. She put a neighbor boy in the state hospital. We are talking 8-9 year old kids. Nothing was ever done to that teacher as far as I know of, although ALL the parents knew that she was vicious. If only just one of us had had Elisha's power! I think it was that experience (among others) that started me on the road to deconstruction: I simply could not reconcile what I was learning in Saturday morning Catechism Class and Sunday morning Mass with what I was learning Mondays through Fridays in Mrs. Wicker's third grade classroom at Grand Prairie Elementary. Both of those things could not be right; one had to be true and one had to be false--and guess which one had the most impact? Two hours per week versus 40?

I think it would be an interesting topic for you to discuss.

    • @mrmaat
      @mrmaat 7 місяців тому

@@avivastudios2311 There are issues with this on a few levels.
      1. The Torah depicts Yahweh/Elohim/ I in a henotheistic way. He is more powerful than other gods but not the only or “true” god.
      2. Even if this were the case, using mass violence against a population wasn’t necessary to demonstrate that message. There are many ways he could have showed his power, from a sign in the heavens, making Hebrew slaves physically invulnerable to abuse. His portfolio seems quite violent so he could have assassinated each Pharaoh who refused him. Eventually one might have gotten the message.
      3. Hardening Pharaoh’s heart clearly demonstrates it wasn’t just about showing his power in a way sufficient to persuade. It was a sadistic pantomime of predetermined violence. The god portrayed here is a vile bully repeatedly punching the victim in the face with the victim’s own fist while saying “stop hitting yourself”.

@@mrmaat God knew exactly what to do to prove to the Egyptians that he was the true God. All the plagues had something to do with revealing Himself but I'll just give you one example.
So you may have heard that the Egyptians worshipped the sun God Ra. The last plague that God sent to the Egyptians was the plague of darkness. You could imagine that during this plague the Egyptians started praying to their god to bring back the light. But it didn't work. Which made them lose faith in their god. They realized that the God that was creating the darkness was probably the only God that was real.
So it was a combination of things. It was showing His power and His glory AND showing that His power cannot be overturned by the gods that they served. Because they were not real.
And it worked! There's a verse thay suggests that some of the Egyptians went with the Jews to the promised land in the end.

What really gets me about this kind of apologetic is that they have to read so much stuff into the Bible that should have been there in the first place. If this stuff is just descriptive and not to be emulated/lauded, why wouldn’t it just explicitly say that? There’s tons of places in the Bible that are explicit like that about things you should and shouldn’t do. It’s not like God was worried about making the Bible boring. Why wouldn’t there be a section after these stories laying out which actions were due to the folly of man’s imperfection and which were in line with god’s plan? There’s already sections of the Bible that retread the same stories anyway, it’s not like God was running out of room or something.
It reminds me of what William lane Craig said about his concept of divine command theory. That it may be the case that you could never be epistemically justified in concluding that you’ve actually received a divine command to do something rather than just be having some sort of psychological episode. If we grant that his worldview is true, the question remains, what good is it? Why would God leave us with something so impractical and unusable? Why is the moral system put in place by God for us completely unfollowable? Why does the Bible need so much interpretation when it could be explicit?
This apologetic and others fall into the category of having unjustifiably low expectations of God and his ability to communicate effectively, in my opinion.
