    I would love to see a video where you go to a used book store and check out all the absolutely sweet 70s Sci fi covers on the novels.
    Pick your favorite, and build it from scratch.
    A lot of work I know, Prototyping and all that, but still it would be cool to bring some of those under rated Cover art pieces to 3d life.

      This is actually a great idea, I might have to try it. There's plenty of used book stores where I live so lots to pick from.

    The model looks great but I have to say that the hanger really makes it look special and brings the whole model together. The weathering brings a lot of interest to the whole diorama. Thanks for sharing this.

    This model is just so cool. There is something about the whole diorama that makes it so esthetically pleasing to the eye. The space port docking pod just adds to the whole scheme and makes this diorama look like it really could exist somewhere.
    Have you ever considered taking the concept of using proper blueprints even further and creating something instantly recognisable ? May I suggest a rather excellent book by Graham Langridge called "Alien: The Blueprints" (approx £22-£26 depending where you get it from), which has extremely detailed complete scaled drawings in all angles of things like the "Nostromo", the Caterpiller P5000 Power Loader, the M577 Armoured Marine Troop Transporter, the "Prometheus" and other iconic machinery and spacecraft from those worlds. It may take longer than your current builds , but it's an option for you.

    Amazingly pleasant work to watch. Only note I would offer is that, if you ever decide to revisit this wonderful piece, perhaps consider adding a spray of starlight or the curve of a dust cloud onto the bottom of the diorama to impart the idea that the ship is cradled above an open bay - like in the inspiration picture. Technically, I think the stars would be very unlikely to be visible from withing a properly lit launch bay - but they would be there to tell the story, not be realistic.

    Excellent work, well done. I make up toy soldier sets to give away so I have two issues: A) The rule of threes, one ship is a ship, two is two ships but three is a fleet (works the same with toy tanks), so I have to make three identical copies. B) Some of the sets go to 3-7 year olds, so cannot have anything they could hurt themselves with or break-off and choke on. There is a third issue as well, some things are likely to end up in the bath (although I have made some specifically for that). What I need is a glue that sticks uPVC (plumbing fittings) to styrene, no luck yet but still experimenting (for the moment drilling holes and using drawing pins.thumb tacks backed with Milliput to provide a gluable surface). Look forward to your future builds, I need ideas for sci fi sets.

    That looks really great. I can't believe this is your first exposure to it. Some of Homeworld's general aesthetic was inspired by the ships from the art-book / future history "Terran Trade Authority - Spacecraft 2000-2100AD". It's like reading a wiki-page describing the histories all sorts of civilian and military ships with beautiful full color artwork. Take a look and I'm sure you'll see some similarities.

    You should use Tamiya brand modeling putty, it is as white as the polystyrene and it dries up quick. You can sand it and paint it, it is great! The only thing is it smells like oil based paint. Other than that, it is awesome.

      Converting it to papercraft would be interesting. I have to take into account the fact that the styrene has some dimension to it when I make the templates, but I do sometimes test them in paper to make sure they line up right.

      It is called styrene, a lot of modelers buy theirs from a company called Evergreen. But I recommend just calling your local sign printer shop and asking to go through their trash. They often thrown tons of scraps of this stuff out, and in all kinds of thicknesses.

    Love your videos! I am brand new to spaceship model building and, so far, have only watched your channel, and Adam Savage over at Tested. I am really excited to get started and was wondering what app you're using to import the ship model and create your templates?

    • @Kooozer
      @Kooozer 2 роки тому +1

      It looks like Affinity on Mac, but you can do the same thing with Photoshop, Illustrator, GIMP, Inkscape etc. General process is to import an image or several images and trace the major shapes. Just make sure the images are as close to orthographic as possible (no perspective distortion). It's easier to trace them as vectors as it's easy to adjust the positions and line thicknesses afterwards and can be scaled to any size without any issues, which makes printing easier.
      If you have access to a 3D model file like the video, you could use Blender or some 3D model viewer to take screenshots of it at different angles for creating templates, or if you want even more accurate templates import it into 3D modelling software and unwrap the mesh into a UV map, but that's pretty advanced and is probably overkill if you don't already know how to do it!

    • @Sublight_Drive
      @Sublight_Drive  2 роки тому

      This is it exactly. I don’t know anything about 3D modeling programs so I just use the default Mac picture viewer which can handle .obj files just fine. There’s a little bit of perspective distortion, but since I clean up the templates to match with each other it’s not an issue.
