    A trick to use with the masking tape. After you put the tape on, paint another layer of the base. If it bleeds, and it happens a lot, it bleeds the same color as below. But, that bleed seals the stencil for the real paint you want to lay down.

    • @Waterratt4344
      @Waterratt4344 5 місяців тому +1

      I have also used clear to seal the tape from bleeding paint.

    For anyone interested in the Xabungle kits that featured in the episode - it was created by the incredibly influential Yoshiyuki Tomino
    What’s funny about it is that in 1979, he created Gundam, a nuanced war drama that completely revolutionized what animated sci-fi could be and changed the industry forever. He then made Ideon in 1980, a mecha show that ends up with eldritch horrors and some of the darkest scenes.
    So immediately after this, what does he follow up these two dark, heavy, boundary-pushing series with? Xabungle, a cartoony comedy series. Very silly and deeply unserious and not for everyone, but that’s why I love it!
    As a fan of sci-fi I’ve been put onto so many great shows just by looking up where my model kits come from, be it a niche 70s anime or a forgotten british tv show. That dingy spaceship kit you got for kitbashing scraps? Who knows, it might be from your next favorite show! 😁

    If anyone is curious YES I did absolutely ruin my Spotify recommendations by listening to the Xabungle opening theme like 5 times in a row and YES I absolutely regret having done so.

    I suggestion I've seen to prevent masking bleed, is to first spray the area with a clear coat, this will block off any potential bleed points for when you apply the paint.

      @@Sublight_DriveWow! That "D'oh!" moment is so relatable. I would have liked to see how you made a major repair like that on a nearly finished model in that situation.

      The white is actually the bare plastic underneath. I was surprised, but apparently the clear coat actually melts the dry paint before it hardens. I could try and recreate it, but I'd probably use something I don't need to clean off with rubbing alcohol after lol

    Relatedly my gf and I have a project in mind that you’re welcome to run with which is the un-legoing of Lego classic space ships and especially classic space themed MOC’s which seem to capture the vibe better than many of the official designs.
    Am additional design consideration is we want to make them durable enough to play with.
    Feel free to run with the idea but remember to ask permission from the AFOL’s before doing one of their designs

      Once you have the .pdf on your computer you can do whatever you want with it. Except start selling it to other people for a higher price than I do, but it's not like I can stop you, it's just a dick move.
      You can build the models with whatever greeblies you like! Or none at all, I suppose. You can scale them up, but I suspect it may cause some issues with some parts fitting if you don't scale up the thickness of your building material to match.

    I am curious. Are you aware of the paper modelling hobby? Specifically the process of obtaining the 3d files from games such as Homeworld etc. these files can then be "unwrapped" and generated as 2d coloured and templates using graphics programmes such as pepakura designer. Print the templates, cut fold and glue to build the model.
    I have seen the paper templates used to build sheet styrene based models which either need to be painted or, if you are really into it, print a second run on decal paper and "dress" the styrene sheet structure with game accuate textures.
    At one time nearly every ship from Homeworld, Homeworld 2, Freelancer, Wing Commander and loads of others were available as free download templates.
    There are a lot of others out there such as Jan Rukyr's Aliens Papercraft website, Genet Models etc

    • @Sublight_Drive
      @Sublight_Drive  Місяць тому

      I’m aware of the papercraft hobby but I had no idea there was specific software for unwrapping models. That’s so cool!
      Styrene has a bit more dimension to it that paper, so an unfolded net would probably require some massaging of the shapes, but it would be a better starting point than taking screenshots lol.
