- It's not often Games Workshop produce ugly models but when they do all I see is opportunity!
This Stormraven Gunship Warhammer 40k conversion is a prime example of that! I am not allowed Stormravens in my Space Marine army & have limited 'flyer' options that are just as ugly as the Stormraven. Using only plasticard this Stromraven is converted to a Space Wolf Stormwolf I can be proud to put on the tabletop.

If you make a troop transport version, you could have the little Divet in the ground be where you put a space marine to signify what unit is being transported
Oh I like that idea! I wish I'd thought of that earlier as I do believe the Stormwolf can transport troops. But now I need to make a Stormfang so I'll be sure to use the idea then.

I've not seen anyone approach drybrushing with this method, and now that you've laid out the logic I don't understand why I didn't see it before. I think this is the first of your videos that I've seen but it won't be the last!

Cool. You have some good ideas. I especially liked the idea of painting metal under the red, so that you could more easily create wear and tear marks. BTW, I like the cathedral in the background. I built one in the early 2000s, but it was too large for most games.
I've a couple more ideas on how to 'fix' this model again.

I can’t bear the StormRaven in it’s original form either, but luckily my focus is the Great Crusade/ Horus Heresy Era, so I have access to the similar but much more attractive Storm Eagle and Fire Raptors. I got a Storm Eagle for my Raven Guard Legion, and even though it was a horrible kit to assemble, the finished product was worth it. Your conversion is so great looking, and I think would easily pass as a Heresy Era flyer from the Imperium’s Armory. This is my first encounter with your channel, but you earned my subscription- keep up the great work!

Well I'll just have to build another version, but definitely not how it comes in the box,, it's still ugly🤣. I'll add it to the list as I plan on making a few more conversions of this kit.
While they were around, Chapter House Studios sold, among other fantastic items, a perfect fit Storm Raven 4" extension kit. Dramatically changed the look for the better.
Aye, since doing this I've found a couple of extension kits, but I do like to do things myself for a couple of reasons. First off it's cheaper & every penny counts in this hobby🤣, plus I have much more control over what I'm trying to build & I do love to be hands on.

I kitbashed a stromraven with a storm wolf to make a thunder hawk gunship. I need to make a second one that’s a little cleaner looking but I’m happy with what I managed to throw together.

Heya, I enjoyed this video and it's a great conversion - but the overhead camera is really hard to watch. It looks like the shutter speed is way too low, probably due to low light, so it's causing massive motion blur and making it hard to see the details when things are moving.
You could probably get a fancier camera that's better with poor lighting, but it'd probably be cheaper and better all round to pick up a couple of soft-boxes and really bright lights to just get everything really well lit.
Please don't take this as an attack or anything, I know sometimes on the internet people can just point out negatives and be mean. I liked the content, just would love to be able to see it a bit better! :)
I knew about this in the video. I dropped the camera while filming the video & some of the settings changed & it took a while to for me to notice. Unfortunately I am an idiot & didnt note the original settings down, a mistake I have already corrected.
I had always hoped they would remodel that poor stormraven. looks so much better with a longer hull

What table do you use?
The Hot Wire is a Proxxon, although completely unnecessary, but it is a time saver. There are plenty of decent tables out there cheaper.
Too bad Chapterhouse is gone, they had a great conversion kit.
I'd still use plasticard, part of the fun with conversions is figuring it all out
That mechanicus standard grey looked very green 😂
It is, that's one of the reasons I like it. I really like the combination of the dark green/grey with the light blue/grey that's the Uniform Grey.
Get two Stormspeeders & two Landspeeders Storm, use the engine of the first on the second one, so it can transport five marines, the noses of the first one, might be perfect for twp back side pylons of this bird, adding some gravity assist to the back.
Note taken as I have at least two more versions of this I would like to make
It would leave you with two landspeeder storm engine block, per bird.
Would they be usefull enough in say beefing up the engines or say, modernising their setup a bit?
Maybe as a fused in, air intake system, that can hide the engine heat in cool air?
Heh, you might be able to use such a landspeeder storm engine block, per bird, split in two.
Would thus also let you upgrade it's escorts as well. Lol.
That just leaves you with a set of stormspeeder cockpit seats.
Maybe for the troop bay seats or a HQ? 😅

If you are going to do a Storm Eagle, will you use a StormRaven and a StormFang?
I can see you going for the Stormfang troopbay, for the back end and using a Stormraven for the nose, while using the Stormfang engine blocks (on their sides) with the Stormraven wings or so.
Might even let you put the StormFang it's main spinal weapon option, in the nose section, if so wanted.
If only a twin tail boom setup was possible, right?
But you don't have enough air-scoops, to use them on-top of the engine, on the wing covering section and use them as the basis of the tail booms.
I mean, you would have three spare tails, so with another three, enough for three such units.
As for a fun take on the Imperial Eagle, two such Stormfang Wolf heads on the side of your Shield.
Anyway, great work, your StormRaven really looks good.
@@rbleisemWell this is my Custom Stormwolf & I will be making a Stormfang at some point as well as a fancy terrain piece that acts as as military delivery bird. I have thought about a Stormeagle but my understanding is that it is now under the Legend category. One thing I do know is that I want to add more scratch building into the next one.
Never really played, so not at home with the rules, will take your word for it.
I find the StormFang looking a bit too much like the Laughing Fox from Batman 🦇 in Justice League (his transport plane).

O, did you look here on youtube, at tje club named: "Tandem Winged Aircraft Were Almost A Thing In WWII" ???
If not, do so, then look at the Avenger Strike Fighter and think what happens if you reverse the flight direction?
Then put the rudders from the small wings to the big wings.
It becomes one sleak bird, right?
Can then even give it a impractical tail bomb bay for dive bombing or other options.
Today there is talk about two seat fighters using the second seat to control drones from and there is that drone variant gunship as well.
So perfect to help secure a landings zone.
As for a Stormfang conversion, what about using a Stormraven for the back, in order to keep the sleak lines?
Heh, two conversion option using a storm-fang/raven fusion, with quite a different looks to it, one a old WWII transport/fighter plane with tail booms from the wing mounted engines, the other more like a Mechwarrior/Battletech Leopard.
Fun.
But does it come in Black?

Don't know how easy it is to swap the Stormfang from troopbay to spinal canon and back again, but if it's relative easy to do with magnets, would it then not be fun to alter the direction of flight as well?
But what ever you do, I'm sure it will look great.
Anyway, hope these thoughts & ramblings help you a bit, in figuring out which look you will then go for, what you think the look should then be.
Keep it up, it looks good, very good, also, let it bring much satifaction and fun, either while building & playing.

Very cool conversion! Though what space marine army can't take stormravens these days? I thought they all could.
If you go through the GW website it shows what you can & can't have,
@@WulvenKraft The webstore isn't super useful for showing what units an army can have, ever since their redesign. I think you may be better off looking at the indexes available in the warhammer community downloads section.
Space Wolves for instance have a list of units they can't take, which are:
- Tactical Squad
- Assault Squad (Legends now anyway)
- Assault Squad with jump pack (also legends)
- Devastator Squad
- Command Squad (legends)
- Apothecary.
Every other unit in the space marine codex including the stormraven is playable for space wolves. I personally like your conversion a lot more as it looks cooler and more traditionally space marine than the stormfang.
@@Rottenflieger. Aye I've checked the cards & index's as well as some of the internet's back waters 🤣. My conclusion was that in a competitive army I believe there is only a handful of Marines that can use the Stormraven, which seems daft to me if you want to sell a model.
Bang on about the Stormwolf/Fang, they are ridiculous. I would have liked to be a fly on the wall during that meeting, 'lets make it look like a wolves head'! Idiocy, they don't do that to other Marines.
@Kraft Thankfully the stormraven in 10th is an option for all chapters these days in both competitive and casual settings, the rules are unambiguous on it. There are very few units from the marine codex which are unavailable for specific chapters, and those are mostly ones which have direct replacements in the chapters. For instance Deathwatch cannot take tactical marines because they are all meant to be veterans. Space wolves have their own equivalent unit, and so on.
In older editions the stormraven was limited a bit more in what chapters can take it (which may be why some older forum posts will say it's not an option). Originally it was only available for Blood Angels and Grey Knights, which was a bit of an odd combo. But nowadays they're a lot looser on vehicle options for divergent chapters. I used to be quite against it because I felt like it took away the uniqueness of some of those chapters, but I've come to realise that giving more options doesn't take away character, it just gives collectors/players/modellers more opportunities to make their army their own.
Totally agree on the stormwolf. I think they tried to make something that vaguely resembled the old Forge World Caestus Assault Ram flyer, but it ended up being a bit over the top for me!

I know in older editions it wasn't allowed, I've had that confirmed from competitive sources, & I know I shouldn't, but I use GW's website as a guide. If you search for a particular chapter's catalogue they are all slightly different & I've never seen a Stormraven come up for the Space Wolves.

Funny you said about the stormfang/wolf, as its actually cheaper😅 personally i think the ugliest models are the wraithguard, goofy ahh vase-headed stick insects
Granted they are cheaper but just as ugly as the Stormraven. Paying a little extra to end up with a satisfying model for my army is not something I am opposed to & I suspect most of us have the same attitude if you're happy to put the time in.
Honestly, it looked better with the tail.

I would say most of the primaris stuff is the uggliest. The face plates, legs on intercessors, jump packs, guns, the tanks, the dreadnaught, it all looks less pleasing to the eye, and somehow enhances the beauty of a brick with wings that came before.
I spent many years away from the hobby & came back to Primaris.

The primaris though, just cant touch them with a brush.
Old school marines I adore though. They only had to make old marines a bit bigger, then no probs😁

I'm probably far from the only person who would really really love a plastic Storm Eagle/Fire Raptor kit. Yes, the Storm Ravven is plug ugly.
The Stormeagle is on my list to kitbash but I have a couple of other things I want to do to the Stormraven first
Why can't they just make a plastic thunderhawk??? It feels like those disappointing movie live action adaptations, you don't need to seguey, just do it 1:1! The script is already there! Parallel here, gw made this uglee kit which doesnt feel the theme of a monastic brotherhood of space marines.
Agreed! I suspect they don't think they'd sell many & if they did they'd have to make the equivalent for other factions. Those who really want one will buy the resin kit, but not for me. I am thinking about a few more conversions & the Thunderhawk is definitely on the list!
Also not a fan of the Stormwolf/Stormfang. The shape reminds me of Disney's Goofy.
