    This video was insanely helpful for somebody like me that's new to these vw 's. I love the "work like a gentleman" lesson, I think that phrase is going to pop into my head whenever I find myself cursing and banging on something because I'm doing it the dumb, lazy way.

    I needed this video. There are tons of videos on pan replacement, but not much on the other things that you should do with the body off! I'm planning my pan and heater channel replacement for this summer.

    This is great! I just created my checklist and planning on a JBugs order today. Chris, I’ve become a fan and love your attention to detail. I’ve stripped my 1970 bug down to metal and I’m about to pull it off the chassis for epoxy primer. While off I’ll definitely follow your guidance. Thank you!

      Tough to find these days. Many places say "German" but they come routed thru Taiwan sometimes. We like wolfsburgwest.com for the top of the line parts.

    Thanks Chris for the inspiration, I have a 71 Super Beatle convertible. I've been the owner since 1980, an have kept it up the best I can with limited resources & skills. The problem I am experiencing now is finding a old school VW mechanic that can work on my car in my area without a bad attitude . Any suggestions? I love my car but options are limited in my area . Thanks again for the information.

    Chris do you strip the paint from the new pan halves when you replace them? I’m referring to the black paint that is on the pan halves when shipped.

    • @classicvwbugs
      @classicvwbugs  3 роки тому +2

      Depends on the client. We have done it before, but many times you can get away with scuffing them, sand em a bit, and repaint.

    Do you think using bed liner on a car as nice as this 65, could appear to some that you are hiding defects with this coating? If this car was totally rust free underneath ,would you do the same, or prep and paint it a matt black to give the car credit for the condition it''s in?

    • @classicvwbugs
      @classicvwbugs  4 роки тому

      It is entirely up to the client. We can do it anyway they choose. And if I do an undercoating, I do not cake it on, it is just a light coat. I usually just do a truck bed liner and it does not come out like mud, like some undercoating sprays. Most times it is sprayed with a VHT chassis paint or POR-15.

    Won't the chassis rust again where the self tappers are? The chassis looks really nice though!

    • @classicvwbugs
      @classicvwbugs  4 роки тому

      The likelihood of that happening before you die is very small. The factory used nails, and many of those pans survived. If they did rust it was not due to the nails. You can always use an adhesive to keep the seal down, or touch it with some paint underneath where the screw came through. Hope that helps, =o)

  • @vwmountainman9701
    @vwmountainman9701 8 років тому

    If you can say ? Where do you get ur parts ? I have ordered from 4 different companies so far. Some parts stock - some aftermarket ! It's really a hit/miss on getting quality parts. I try for German when I can - can't always justify spending that much extra - even thou I know it the best. My wallet just does not always agree !

    Hi Chris, I watched this video with the chassis exposed and I wondered if you have any ideas on how to remove a lock on the shifter on my '60 bug. I purchased it this way and there is no key and I can see no way to remove it. There are no visible nuts or fasteners. One guy said to break it off or cut it off. I just want to put it stock. Best Regards, Mike in CA

    • @classicvwbugs
      @classicvwbugs  8 років тому

      +Ruby Purcell it should be in two halves, the top part slides back. But yeah you may need a key to get this to happen.

    • @JosephDR
      @JosephDR 9 років тому

      +Jamie Phillips (FireWorks 4 U) If you're not a VW purist, you can put Dynamat on the tunnel and pans. A cheaper alternative is roofing tar mat (that comes in rolls) that Chris uses.

Asking because I had several bugs many years ago and lived in the North, it was almost a common thing for someone with an older VW to hit the brakes hard and have the I beam buckle under from the rustTAKE THAT XXXXXXX MADE IN MEXICO LABEL OFF THAT STEERING DAMPENER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • @dashulamite
      @dashulamite 5 років тому

      Do you have a metal plate on the drivers door frame? Usually first numbers: 08/74 indicate the manufacture date 8th month, 1974. Note: manufacturer date is not necessarily model year. If the car was manufactured after the 6th month of the year, it is considered as the following years model. For instance, the 08/74 above is listed as a 1975 vw.
