    I was a bit nervous to do this. I have a'73 standard, and decided to take the plunge. My only advice is to remove the glass before drilling. I did a little scratch on the glass. Not as good as you and your dad Chris. LOL Your video was really easy to follow. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom restoring VWs. Ciao

    Great chris! I guess the only way to.replace the seal is to drill the rivet? For example if we cut the rubber at the rivet point?
    Its a pitty to waste a good original rivet.any way to buy an identical.aftermarket rivet!
    Thank you for your time,you are always helpfull!!

    • @Mr-sx5ks
      @Mr-sx5ks 8 років тому

      +Matt Jackson I replaced the broken handle part of my vent window latch '77. Bought a new latch, removed (tapped out) the pin that holds the new handle to the new latch base and installed only the new handle on the original latch base. Just keep the vent window in place. The new handle is a looser fit but it works. Might make for a nice vid, how to replace broken handle of vent window latch without removing latch.

    Thanks Chris! This could not be more timely as this is on my to-do list for this winter. I have a 1965 convertible and the passenger side doesn't really align well with the windshield with the door closed. The driver and passenger side are both somewhat different. Is it possible that someone replaced the original with wrong year? Or is my problem something else? Thanks!

    • @classicvwbugs
      @classicvwbugs  8 років тому

      +Dan Johnson Each vent window is different on your car?

    • @danjohnson6292
      @danjohnson6292 8 років тому

      They appear different. I have not measured them but one has a round handle for opening and one has a lever. I thing the driver side is the original and the round handled one on the passenger side is a different year. With the door closed, there is a substantial gap between the vent window and the windscreen post.

    • @classicvwbugs

      +Dan Johnson Yeah they should match, maybe someone swapped out one of them.

    Chris, you have guided me through my old 73' Beetle restoration (until a tree fell on the roof - no real fix for that) and now it's replacement a 72' Super Beetle. When replacing the window scrapers I decided to replace the vent seal. The parts are from MAMWorks so they're quality. I have struggled for many hours trying to get the main seal to seat in the wing frame. Any trick I'm not catching in your video ?

    • @classicvwbugs

      +Chris Vallone yes - trying to follow the instruction video exactly...using liquid wrench silicone as shown. I'm afraid of pushing too hard and ripping the rubber. Perhaps not pushing hard enough. I'll keep trying because I need the window . I've thought of sending it back and ordering from CIP1.

    Hi Chris,
    New Beetle owner... Its actually my "Lady's Bug" - groan, but question about the rivet for the top of the vent window attaching to the frame. I see you're using a "pop" rivet here (7:06). The local Beetle shop got me one closer to the one I drilled off. At a loss as to how to put that on exactly? Any ideas? I feel like I'm missing the back or something? 1970 VW bug

  • @stertim

    Chris. I know this is entirely off-topic, but settle an argument for me. You more than anyone could answer this one.
    As a thought experiment...would it be possible to build a Beetle from ground up using only after-market parts? I know
    that probably the toughest parts to acquire would be the floorpan and steel body parts, but do the last Beetle manufacturers in Mexico still use their body and floor stamping tools for spares? And could one get hold of such parts? Just wondering
    what your take on this is.

    • @classicvwbugs
