    This is actually very smart. My dad and I have kinda been laughing at the show like "Yeah right. There's no way Negan can do what he does and not get shot." This makes you understand how he gets away with his reign of terror. Negan is a genius.

    • @robertriter4077
      @robertriter4077 7 років тому +25

      No, no, and no. There is no way Negan can do what he can and not get shot, at least not by external forces. Take the scene Carl raids his place. In the comic he comes out of that truck shooting and fires several shots at Negan before being taken down. On the show, he stands there while Negan whistles and taunts, just not firing for no reason. It's garbage. Hot garbage.

      There's no way Negan can do what he does and not get shot because the Writers wanted Negan to live for more than 20+ Episodes instead of the episode where Carl Guns down the Negan Thugs in an effort to kill Negan. Yeah that was BS real bad.

    • @trendhouse6799
      @trendhouse6799 7 років тому +11

      This is actually a load of bullshit, designed to pander to trends and say what his audience wants to hear. No dictator in history was successful by promoting rebellious people, dictators only promote slimy sycophants because that's how they stay in power and that's why dictatorship are usually incompetent. Negan also kills people's friends and then let's them live unsupervised being free to organize against him (which is what happened). Walking Dead is a TV show, and like all TV shows it's brainless entertainment that doesn't say anything about how people actually are in real life.

      You all are talking about a show where guys with mini guns and aircraft carriers (the militaries of the world) were over run by the original kind of zombies(the weakest kind).
      I mean some video game zombies that have all these special kinds of zombies like acid spitting zombies, mutated super zombies, semi sentient zombies maybe. But these? A group of soldiers in heavy ballistic armor with flame throwers and small arms, vehicles with machine guns. How? WW1 literally proved machine guns will exterminate anything dumb enough to come right at them.

    A big part of Negan's charm lies in Jeffery Dean Morgan. A lesser actor just couldn't have pulled this character off in such a brilliant way. He's a really underrated, under used actor.

    I think Negan's system was always doomed to fail. When you constantly exploit, extort people under you to the point of desperation, they will fight back. And Negan's power and resources, came from the communities who lived in fear of him and the Saviours. When they did their best to appease the Saviours, but were still getting bashed and kicked about, they figured it was time to stand or die trying. It may have worked if Negan developed a better collaboration with them, instead of squeezing them.

    • @aespair
      @aespair Рік тому +4

      That's a very optimist read. People have been exploited pretty severely for thousands of years and only a select few in history have ever risen up. It's very easy to underestimate the amount of shit people are willing to take to avoid confrontation.

    • @Khetsisal33
      @Khetsisal33 Рік тому

      @@aespair it happend at an accelerated pace this time because necessities like food and protection (essential in zombie apocalypse) were being stripped bare from them, and they couldn't produce many of the things they needed themselves. Over the course of history people have been more or less fine under oppression because there were more ways to get necessities than scavenging and always more people to die before you, it was really only the poorest who felt displaced by the elites. Clean drinking water, shelter, clothes and even weapons could be found from neighboring communities or churches seeking to aid the downtrodden.. Then you have cases like in France and the revolution where class divide was so immense EVERYONE was the poorest and no one was receiving neccessities. Now, in Alexandrias case, they were in a constant loop of finding no necessities, and being squeezed dry by Neegan. They spearheaded the revelution by showing others that Neegan wasnt willing to compromise a tiny portion of his resources to compensate his fiefs on their losses and keep them alive, nor was he willing to think higher demand was out of the question, his exploitation knew no bounds. A wiser Neegan would regulate the exploition to be in intervals rather than every collection he made. TLDR: Accelerated rebellion due to the increased threshold for survival during the apocalypse and hardened survivalists, and Neegan's absurd greed and tax inefficiency.

    I think ezekiel is just as an effective leader as negan judging by how his people jumped and sacrificed their lives to protect him from a 50cal machine gun instead of running for their lives. But the king rules with kindness and negan rules with fear.

    • @klaytonparker9061
      @klaytonparker9061 Рік тому +4

      I see being king as someone that needed to be loved, respected, and feared by all. From allies to enemies.

    Honestly, this is one of my favorite "The Philosophy of.." to date. Being an avid TWD fan, I found the first half of season 7 to be underwhelming, but Negan to be so intriguing. I knew for certain that, as you pointed out, it was not just his charisma that drew me in to both despise and adore the man, but the pure diabolical nature of how he ran the Saviors. Thank you so much for going into depth on one of my favorite characters in the franchise!

My favourite character is Iroh. I really like his attitude towards life: a lot of times he looks childish but in crucial life-changing moments he shows wisdom, patience and love.

    • @whiistlingwinds
      @whiistlingwinds 5 років тому +7

      That was actually wildly irresponsible of them since Maduro was democratically elected and coincidentally is a socialist resident who has done more to help black and brown people of his country receive social programs to aid them than any american president ever and is anti-imperialism (hence the coup going on by non other than the imperialist state of the USA). I almost unsubscribed at the misinformation. Wisecrack should probably stay out of foreign politics they don't know enough about....even in references, and so should you. Unless you are (and Wisecrack) part of the neoliberal and far-right campaign to tarnish his name in order to overthrow him so the USA can finally get their grimy hands on Venezuelan resources with the backing of a leader they vouched for as "for the people". This is literally Vietnam all over again it's hilarious but without the comedy. Be on the wrong side of history, I guess.

    I knew Negan was a bad ass psychologist the first scene he was in. He uses behavior conditioning to the letter, warning people not to screw up first and then keeping his word. Hell, he even mixes some roman disciplinary action too. Decimation, I think it's called, when it's not the screw-upper who gets punished, but someone random from the group. Makes everyone keep tabs on each other so they don't die for someone else's little rebellion.

    6:14 When Negan asks Dwight "do you want to have a blast from the past with you know who?" I really don't think he means it and it is literally a test, not a reward. The downside of Negan's approach is that he personally exposes himself to danger constantly. Since the real threat he gives isn't that the person who attacks him will be killed, but that the person who attacks him will lose their whole family, then it relies on him still being alive to carry out the terrible vengeance. All it takes is one successful assassination attempt and his society will crumble. Nobody is going to step into his shoes because nobody has been empowered. So it's pretty clear that if you actually are successful in bumping off #1, there will be no #2 bringing the punishment back to your home town. That encourages continued attempts.

    The saviors decided to kill Gregory (the leader of hilltop) and Negan was never told. He still doesn't know anything about it. I'm pretty sure that's keeping a secret. If the saviors are such a tightly knit group Negan would definitely know about it. Not such a perfect system after all, huh? Nobody points this out (believe me I've checked) because the entire plot of the show would unravel.

    I think you did a great job considering how effective Negan is as a dictator. I submit though that the measure of a ruler is not just the survival of their rule but also the survival and health of the nation they rule. I think it would be interesting to look at questions related to that point as well:
    - Do the Saviors have a better collective survival rate?
    - Are they living better lives than they would elsewhere in that world?
    - Will the nation survive the passing of Negan? (Is he indoctrinating Carl to take over in the classic revolution that turns out to just be a replacement?)
    It might also be worth considering that every person in the Saviors had submitted to Negan's rule, so what does that say about what they collectively want? Fear and moral permissions can be lubricants to authoritarianism, but aren't the gears and power built from deeper needs?

    Negan is so fascinating because he encompasses all the traits and flaws of an average man with an above average intellect. Most people seem to think he is a psychopath, but he clearly is not. Everything he does, he does so with full clarity and he is brutally honest about it. This is what probably scares people about him, that any ordinary man, faced with extraordinary situations could become a Negan. Yes he is brutally violent and he is an asshole, but he is also empathic and a charismatic leader. He punishes people that disobey him and rewards those who are loyal. He is a sound tactician and an unhinged psycho whenever he chooses to be. This is why he is definitely NOT insane. He knows exactly what he is doing all the time. His greatest trick is making people believe that he is insane.
    He is also very narcissistic and self absorbed. He thinks he is a god among men and this comes out in the way he speaks and carries himself. He makes himself seem larger than life and he gives his people the illusion that they cannot live without him. He uses his intelligence to manipulate people into doing his bidding and he gets very angry when things don't go his way.
    He is by far the most interesting multidimentional character that ever appeared on this show and this is why people like him so much.

      Kills to get his way. No he really only kills when necessary. When people step out of line. Like the main group killing his men. So he kills one. Gets punched so kills another to let them know shit doesn’t slide. Ricks ego is too big and he wanted to be on top of things so instead of taking the 2 people killed for 30 some odd saviors they killed before even one of them died, RICK can’t swallow his pride and move on as not being a leader. So keeps trying to get out. Leading negan with no other choice but to try to end it by killing all of them. There are no good or bad people in the walking dead. Alpha bad shit crazy negan and rick tho. They trade places, you follow negan from the beginning you’ll love him, and despise rick

      @@parker_messick lol he does kill to get his way killing 1 or 2 people is still killing and I'm for certain you got it twisted rick stories starts out as a dude just trying to find his family later he loses his wife lori after she gave birth goes crazy a bit then has to kill the governor loses almost losing at this point he starts showing no remorse and loses trust for most people the only reason he went after negan was because he was a threat and so he could get food for his people now I don't know much about negan but I will say he has his reason for why he kills cause he trying to save people but on the contrary because he started a war which didn't need to be started if he just left rick and his group alone cause obviously rick can only take so many of his people dying before he decides to fight back negan could've stopped after killing Glenn and abe but he didn't which caused Rick's group to go to war with the saviours
