For whatever reason, the Japanese just do not do 3d Animation very well. American and European studios do nothing but show "how it's done" and the Japanese still can not seem to take the hint.
I’m only reading a manga a month, giving it time because I know it’s not finished and if I didn’t do this I’d finish it all in a week and have to wait years for it to finish! Very much enjoying my journey, I watched the anime before reading the manga.
The anime "berserk" is related to the greatest gritty fantasy ever written called Berserk? BLASPHEMY! Its clearly a product of the demons to blemish the story itself, those clever bastards.
The core story is relatively unchanged, but the neutering of the visuals kinda fucks with the way you'd look at this series from an interpretive perspective. The manga leans heavily on visual storytelling, and this new anime decided that that wasnt important at all and completely fucked it up. Also the new show completely skipped an entire arc, so the plot doesn't even escape unscathed.
I'm a little disappointed they didnt go through Religion Vs Paganism themes in Berserk as well as Cosmic Horror Mental Health and Effects of War this is why most wanted them to cover the Manga
in the manga it specifically states that the paganism the witches worship is the same as the farsee worship. what one calls gods is an angel in another name.
Dugon man Well Sort of but the GodHand are posing as the "4 Angels" compared to the Elemental Beings Schierke draws power from. The point of disconnect that religion gives that we are somehow not part of the same nature that we are somehow better than animals/plants or even other humans depending on what we believe. We cling to the afterlife to go to heaven or hell rather than focusing on the life we have now. Thats why the religious people in Berserk are literally blind to magical creatures like Puck. It kinda says Organized Religion despite being for peace only divides us as people. Lot of modern religions stems off from paganism as well.
Your Philosophy videos are usually stellar, but I think you dropped the ball on this one. There are much deeper things going on in Berserk that I wish you would have explored instead.
Those things have already been explored greatly by a bunch of critics. I liked this one because they focused on the aspect of violence and looked deeper into it. This is something that I don't often see, which is a shame considering that I think the violence that happens within Berserk is an important.
He said that while there are plenty of other themes, they were focusing on violence because it's a more subtle philosophical aspect, and one that hasn't been as well covered.
Nicholas de Sousa I mean the 5% were still wrong because using the 2016-17 anime only gives you about 40% of the story and only about 30% of the context to understand the story and it’s kind of obvious no effort was put into the research of the series.
Honestly this video was pretty lacking. It seems like the people who wrote this only watched the 2016 series without the necessary context. The manga is so much better than the show in the areas discussed, and it’s a shame they barely made mention to it. Watch the SuperEyepatchWolf video instead
While Berserk has an overwhelming level of shock violence, violence itself is not the theme of Berserk but that of fate and determinism. Miura subverts many aspects of traditional storytelling by showing Gutz to be more of a protagonist with villainous qualities than heroic ones, and it isn't until the most recent arcs that he's somewhat more relaxed. On the other hand, Griffith is the knight in shining armor and the one that everyone looks up to even though he sacrificed the souls of his friends and his body in an unholy demon ritual to get a second shot at his "dream". Overall everyone became who they were because of the things that happened in their lives.
serenadesilhout they said early in the video that they were only going to talk about the philosophy behind the violence of berserk, they acknowledged there were other themes but they were just doing the violence in this video, the rest of it is for someone else at another time
I acknowledge that. However its such an incredibly narrow interpretation that risks missing the entire point. There's a reason the original anime always started off with the ominous narrator -it helps reinforce themes which were given consistent focus. Even the character's names tell you something about their personalities and their destinies.
I've been watching many Wisecrack videos since the channel began and it just falls short of their capabilities. They should really come back to this video to give it justice. There are plenty of sources that speak on the philosophical themes of Berserk so there's plenty of avenues they could have approached this. It also doesn't help when all the clips used were from the 2016-2017 Berserk anime version which has the most negativity attached to it.
serenadesilhout Well considering they said there was more to talk about, I imagine that they would definitely have to make more than one video fully explaining the nuances in Guts' philosophy. I mean violence is still a very important aspect of the art. Like most stories worth anything they have layers of messages and deeper meanings that is meant to keep us thinking. I would still like to see a part 2 on Guts' and Determinism. (Even though a lot of modern stories play with this idea until it's almost redundant) I would advise for you to wait what they have to say next time before saying they have missed the mark.
Malik Jackson I'm merely being critical and I mentioned that I've watched Wisecrack since the channel was fairly new so that's not going to change my appreciation for them and the hard work that they do. However saying Berserk is about violence is similar to saying the philosophy of video games is about violence and movies are about violence and war is about violence. It's just an incredibly shallow argument. While violence may serve a role in the story, I don't find it to be the "theme" or message of the show and I'm sure they knew that.
2:50 you're kind of wrong here. Mozgus is following the Holy See, but the egg apostle turned him and his followers into angels. They didn't know that and assumed it was God
The egg apostle had que power to make reality transcends its boundaries, as such the Mozguz and his inquisitors manifested wings like angels as their perception of themselves are as such. So wisecrack's analysis was quite narrow but it seems he only watched the last adaptations which is quite sad.
So we're only talking about the philosophy of *VIOLENCE* in Berserk, not the overarching philosophy of Berserk, yes? If so, then this is a good analysis for the role that it plays in the series, in that violence from our protagonists (mainly Guts) acts as an expression of the rejection of social conformity. Guts cleaving through a group of soldiers serving a hierarchy built off of falsehoods and actual evil *_is_* - in a sense - beautiful, much like Griffith and his forces butchering the Kushan forces who persecuted Sonia's village. The justification for Guts and Griffith's admittedly visceral and brutal approaches to these predicaments is that their adversaries are commonly responsible for hideous acts of violence done under the guidance of social conformity (i.e. the stoning, genocides, torture for religion, etc.). My only complaint for this video essay would be it's title; _Berserk_ is *filled* with philosophical ideas. I feel that narrowing it down to _just_ the violence is like ordering delivery for one slice of pizza, it's like, "Where's the rest?"
Well they do say they'll do videos on the other themes and ideas later. After all we cant make this video the general philosophy of berserk cause it'd be a 30 hour video!
Plus, like he said, wisecrack can't do the "whole pizza" because berserk is not finished and the ending could go somewhere completely different than what it is now. Also the author took a long ass 20 year vacation time so the author's ideas and the direction of the story may change completely. So we have to be satisfied with this and honestly, it's a good analysis.
MrNight48 I mean it still doesnt change the philosophy of berserk now, like if the ending were to change like you said it still wouldnt change the philosophy of the current material only add on to it. So saying we should be satisfied for reasons like manga anint finished is dumb because they could talk about the philosophy of how it is now because in the future whatever the ending will be wont change the philosophy of the current material the only thing it will change is the overall philosophical theme but I still think they should do vids about certain parts of berserk (like they just have done) and it wont be bad for when or if the manga ends for the philosophical theme.
I disagree, the philosophy may not change but they could end up not getting a lot of things right and the video will age poorly. I rarely see wisecrack go back and revise videos when new things come to light about the subject matter nor have I've seen them ever make a video about the unfinished content's philosophy as a whole either. They have been consistent by only doing finished episodes/seasons/movies/books. Manga on the other hand is a different beast, most creators design them to go on forever and only end when the series isn't popular or external factors that could not be controlled. The author may have an idea on how to end his story but it is entirely possible the ending can destroy everything the story worked so hard to built up because it got axed.
I had a bad feeling after the research fails from Philosophy of Dragonball (IE: Failing to find out the differences between "Superman" Funimation Goku and the more self-centered canon Toei one). And well, it turns out my bad feelings were justified.
The last one was in Jully, It's december, we should have Casca healed by now. Can't wait. The story of Casca behing healed could have been handled better for the first part, I hope the guy is taking his time to put some beautilful things in it, cause we've been waiting for this for years. The battle With Ganishka WAS FREAKING AMAZING.
Hired Sword To be fair they at least acknowledged that violence is, in fact, bottom of the list. Seems like they're building up to the more central themes.
There's a philosophy behind every piece of artwork every created, no matter how poorly executed, convoluted, or otherwise obtuse. One of the most important works of art in the 20th century was a urinal, after all.
Is the goal really what the Human want to achieve or something like that. (pls know i didnt watch samurai jack i look from the outside and know only a few spoilers)
Sorry, but I highly disagree with what you said. While yes, Samurai Jack puts a heavy emphasis on its style, it was never the focus. The reason why Samurai Jack was so much more unique than all the other action cartoons from the 2000's and today, is because it focused less on dialog and more on telling its story with the visuals, music and actions of the characters, and dialog is spoken only when necessary. There was true drama and tragedies in episodes, with memorable and likeable characters, and fantastic actions scenes. For instance, Jack didn't go through much character development in the first 4 seasons, but he was still a very compelling character, because he was both someone we can look up to and relate to. Jack was hero who inspired and helped people, even if they didn't have to anything with his mission of destroying Aku. He's selfless, righteous, strong-willed, intelligent, and can hold his own even without his sword. But Jack is still human. He can get angry, he can get sad, he can be confused, he can fall in love, he can b tricked, he can joke and troll people, and there were several instances where he was close to giving up his quest. Jack isn't a compelling character because he's a paragon, but because he's human. And Aku is one of the best villains I've seen in fiction, because he can go from silly and over-the-top, to dangerous and terrifying. The episodes told unique stories, with awesome premices, memorable characters and music, and were a blast to watch. They can make you laugh, glee at the awesomeness, make you cry, etc. This series is the one that impacted me the most. It inspired me to one day become an animator/artist, and made me interested in the action genre as a whole.
I don't wanna take that away from you bud, good luck in animation. But every episode of that show I ever saw bored me. Always figured it had to be for people who better enjoyed its visual identity, because as a person who didn't I got very little out of it. There was clearly this reverence for classic samurai flicks, where the plot and all the scenes have this patient pace and as its audience you're supposed to be taking your time admiring the scenery and deciphering the actor's expressions. But Samurai Jack's art is minimalist, I don't get much out of looking at it for very long, and Jack is a simple character, you understand who he is on episode one. He never surprises you, except when he fails at something he should have succeeded at, and then you know what the arc of that episode is going to be. You can still enjoy something that's predictable if watching it happen is spectacular, but like I said the art didn't really grip me. If they did a philosophy of Samurai Jack, what would they talk about? Not bushido, Jack deviated from his quest often for any little reason. Maybe like buddhist minimalism, Jack rolls through all these cyberpunk junklands full of useful technology but never possesses anything except his sword and usually but not always his clothes. And hey, the art style is complementary. Guess that could be a video.
Seriously, Wisecrack? I thought you are better than this. No offence to you, man, but.. for those who are new to Berserk, please *please* do read the manga first. *And watch SuperEyepatchWolf's vid and Alecxandxr's.* They had carefully and precisely discussed about the anime and manga of Berserk.
Inaccurate with some details, doesn't mean he is wrong or doesn't have a point. It's a good and poignant video regardless. This video mainly looks at the violence/fighting and some of the horror aspects. Which perfectly addresses SuperEyepatchWolf's complaints about the fight scenes and how they are handled. Aside from that, the other "observations" made during this video (especially about Guts) aren't wrong either, and compliment what was said in the other two videos you mentioned. No one has the "right" interpretation or analysis, nor does anyone cover everything completely, or understand everything completely (let alone present it). I personally found the other two you mentioned lacking (much more of an overview/general purvey and sometimes a bit reviewish). You seriously act like this video has somehow made the series/franchise look bad. It hasn't.
They mistook philosophy as the philosophy of the show when in fact in the intro Jared specifically said that it is the philosophy of violence IN Berserk.
Berserk is primarily about existentialism. It follows along Nietzschean and Jungian themes. A lot of the scenarios in the show are almost directly out of Nietzsche and Carl Jung's writings. Nietzsche is even directly quoted in the story and the anime previews have displayed quotes from Nietzsche as well.
This video gives out the feeling you haven’t watched or read Berserk or did so and only scratched the surface. Even more before watching the video till the end I anticipate a Crunchyroll ad coming up
If you think that's bad, you should've seen "Philosophy of Dragonball." They didn't even seem to know that the Funimation Dub of Goku was very different from the Toei one.
im gonna just guess but i understand that they chose the anime cause then they need to read he whole series multiple times which thy dont have the time. Still just speculation
the biggest horror in berserk is to wait for the next hiatus to stop. and when it stops and you get all you're hopes and dreams up you get one chapter and then get handed to crippling depression for another year of hiatus :D
Personally I believe that people should at least watch the 1997 series...Susumu Hirasawa music is part of the experience....whenever I hear the ''Gatsu theme'', I remember that beatuful scene between him and Caska...
The movies Golden Arc was amazing. The first episode of the 1997 was pure joy, I love the snake man and the heaving armed Guts, it was like Conan. You can watch it and read it like true fans, forget about the 3D one tho'
I feel you missed a great opportunity to discuss the debate around predestination and Calvin's ideas, as well as related religious themes which seem far more relevant than the artistry of violence or societal upheaval. I haven't watched the 2016 anime beyond a few episodes which disappointed me, but the earlier anime as well as the manga delve deeply into causality and the ultimate relevance (or irrelevance) of fighting against it.
Sure, I'm aware the creators have to make choices as to what is to be presented, but I think predestination and causality are two themes that are a lot more relevant than framing Guts or Griffith as revolutionaries/blood artists. Hence I feel that would have been a more interesting topic.
So far my favorite interpretation of Berserk is the theme that Nihilism can actually be healthier and more spiritually uplifting than Calvinist Theology could ever be.
This is not the philosophy of Berserk, it's more like: "The very superficial observation of some clips I watched about Berserk 2016 cross-referenced with Wikipedia in order to sound smart".
Correction, this is not all the philosophy there is to Berserk, but just one philosophical view into it. Which they state at the beginning that they were focusing on one aspect. Berserk as more than one philosophy to it, so you yourself are wrong in your statement.
I don't know if you revisit series to illustrate a different aspect than the first time. If not, this is an enormous missed opportunity. Berserk has A LOT of philosophical content that is far more interesting (and relevant to the story) than violence: self-determination vs. fate, nature vs. nurture, the fundamentals of friendship and companionship, the idea of God as a force of will (or rather, desire, ambition), the old argument about the means to an end... and I'm not even mentioning the outstanding development and the gigantic complexity of the characters! The tension within Caska's hearth between a diluting position of support (and hopefully love) for someone she enshrines, and the possibility of actually giving herself to another... The struggle of proving yourself to someone you respect as a superior, only to be betrayed for trying to measure up to him... The simple and yet profound philosophy of commoners (Jill, Godo, Luca)... I could go on all day. Just consider that it's a series that spends FOURTEEN TANKOUBON (of 200 pages each!) or three 2hs. movies just establishing the main character's background... and then come back and give Berserk's philosophy another shot!
There is a deeper philosophy to Berserk than just violence... the show questions what it calls "the laws of Causality", karma, fate. If we are locked into a pre-ordained mortal life or if we can choose the outcome of our life through seer will power alone!
The Circle I call bullshit. One of the strongest points of Berserk is conveying weight of sittuation through visuals. Miura balances this pretty damn well using only black and white. Saying that visuals don't matter is like saying that it doesn't matter what painting looks like as long as it means something.
UA-cam recommends me this GOAT video just after the berserk manga creator passes away. RIP. This story has been going on for 25 years and I don't even know if it's ever going to get finished now. That being said, still my favorite manga. Thank you for everything Kentaro Miura (creator), and thank you for this great video Wisecrack.
Interesting take, but I feel that one of the great things about Berserk is that so many themes and philosophies are equally important. I'd like to see another video that explores these.
I would say the new anime's animation style isn't controversial, more like widely regarded as absolute dog shit. But yeah, I jive a lot with what's going on in this video.I would rather see your guys' thoughts on the overarching theme of free will vs. determinism that is rampant throughout the series. Also, maybe try to explore the imagery of Berserk, and how it attempts to flip the "knight in shining armor" trope on it's ass, and on the other hand it doesn't paint Gutts as a full-blown anti-hero. Also, for Christ's sake, make someone on staff read through the manga, and start using scans of it. Every panel is a Rembrandt, especially Golden Age Arc!

If you read this comment, please ignore everything said in this video. They have absolutely no clue what they are talking about. They get the simplest ideas wrong and come to the wrong conclusions. Berserk never was or is about horror. And if you think otherwise, then every show with adult themes appearently is horror. Just because there are monsters and horrible deaths doesn't mean it's horror. By that logic, game of thrones is horror. Please, just ignore everything said in this video and check someone out who knows his stuff, like super eyepatch wolf.
Berserk is a bit of a horror Manga, but it's more about the struggle against that horror and what is lost in overcoming it such as things like emotion and mercy
Not really. I think the violence within Berserk is often neglected for the other more 'refined' philosophies in the community, when the violence in it is an important component to Berserk's storytelling . They acknowledged that there were other philosophies within Berserk but were going to focus on the violence. So no, I have to disagree with you wholeheartedly.
It's just talking about that specific aspect. Come on man he said it in the very beginning, this is not talking about the "philosophy", if you mean by philosophy as an overarching theme (which is a debatable meaning).
Beserk, at least from my understanding, is about predetermination versus free will. This will go into spoilers starting now. In a chapter that Miura struck from continuity, Griffith meets the seed of evil. The seed of evil claims that it laid out everything that Griffith experienced as a way to recruit him into the Godhand. The Seed of Evil says that it is born from the need of people to have a supernatural explanation for their woes. This chapter was stricken from continuity. But it shows that the idea was on the author's mind at one point. But there are more examples that are still in continuity. Guts never asked to be born; his adopted father pimped him out during childhood, when he wasn't busy abusing Guts himself. Guts ends up killing himself, how much of this is by accident is not exactly clear at the time. Guts had every reason to grow up into a violent psychopath. Which is exactly what he became, but upon meeting Griffith and losing a bet, he is exposed to an existence that he does not hate. He eventually falls in love with Casca and conisders Griffith a true friend. He overhears a private conversation between Griffith and Princess CHarolette. In this conversation he says that he could only look upon someone as a friend who fought for his own vision. You know how the rest goes. The important part is that Griffith blamess Guts for his capture and torture, even after being reborn as Femto. Then we have the mutated spawn of Guts and Casca, mutated thanks to the actions of Femto. Guts is absolutely horrible to the child when he encounters him, and the Skull Knight suggests that the child will only bring him harm if left alive. It turns out that the child guides Guts back to Casca when she is about to die, and the child has the ability to quell Gut's rage once he has fully activated the Beserker's armor. He uses the last of his power to save Casca, and then he apsses away. The Egg of the World eats the child's remains, and then femto eats the Egg of the World. This is a key step in anchoring the horrors of the universe to the planet. It's just that might have been a huge mistake for Femto. The child has already instilled a psychological need to protect Casca into Femto. Casca has also returned to sanity, but I am not sure how happy she is going to be about this. Oh and the Skull World involuntarily helps create's the astral tear when Femto diverts the Skull Knight's blade made up of Behelits.
Hey bud. I feel you missed it. The beauty of Berserk much more in the story and in the characterization than in the genre. And the artwork! Read the manga. The anime is watered down, in terms of storytelling as well as with the gore and all that.
as a hardcore berserk fan (my profile pic) i agree , that being said , check out the manga :) it's totally non repulsive , in the matter of fact , it's amazing
JtktΘmb for someone who is doing a single sponsored video. its unrealistic for them to read the entire manga and do a philosophy of. the philosophy of berserk is obviously much deeper but this video just covered the underwhelming 2016 anime
JtktΘmb I'm a little disappointed they didnt go through Religion Vs Paganism themes in Berserk as well as Cosmic Horror Mental Health and Effects of War this is why most wanted them to cover the Manga
Nice thoughts guys but the footage you used from the anime is so unbelievably awful, it brings the whole quality of the video down. Should've used stills from the manga, even that would've been better. I was cringing the whole time because of that.
The idea of murder / violence as art is intriguing, especially the 3 tenets of craft, style, and force. This is unsurprising in a Japanese form of art, where the historical and cultural fetishization of the violent and beautiful in the form of samurai is emblematic. Look at Shigurui. This is only possible in an extremely vertical society, and thus perhaps Berserk is also a comment on Japanese hierarchical society and the violence inherent in that system.
I don't think it's a statement of Japanese Hierarchy specifically. It's a bit too general. It highlights more or less the systematic violence against the populace encapsulated by human societies both domestic (The Holy See) and foreign (Kushan Empire).
Would you say that Berzerk uses the reversal of our conception of violence to highlight the idea of slow violence by Nixon or Foucault's assessment that modern society uses the fear of random violence to justify the state's monopoly on violence?
The berserk manga is my favourite series I ever read and I wish you did a philosophy on fate before you did the violence so people who have never seen it wouldn't think it's just a hack and slash series. Still a good video.
Rob Vel Seriously? I mean, I like the '97 anime but the manga has better art, more story and no censor. And at least it didn't end with the biggest "fuck you, read the manga if you wanna see how it ends" of the entire history.
You could've shown the manga, the 1997 anime ot the movies to explore this masterpiece... instead i'm stuck watching the piece of shit 2016-2017 version :c
That wasn't really philosophy. That was just aesthetics. It blows my mind how, in a 14 minute video, you didn't come up with Gatsu deciding to seperate from Griffith in order to follow his own dream. It's pretty obvious.
This is the most superficial analysis I've ever seen. There is soooo much more to talk about in berserk. Instead you guys decided to talk about "violence. What does it mean?"
I found this rambling had little to do with the actual underlying themes and concepts of berserk. Bringing in random people that had said something about the subject and quoting them... That is how I used to write papers in elementary school. I am surprised you did not open with the textbook definition or quoted explanation of horror... Oh wait. Read the Manga.
It says at the beginning of the video, literally in the first 30 seconds, that we're going to discuss the over-the-top violence in Berserk and not the overall themes of the story.
Almost completely agree. However Guts does not just "fight for himself". It's a later message they put in, but he values his friends dearly. He's always had a soft heart in a diamond exterior.
I don´t agree. I would define pretentious as giving out a bunch of words and terms and not actually using it in practice in the show. If you look att End of Evangelion the creator doesn't´t give you any of the answers which leaves you with your own interpretation.
The 97 anime intro very clearly states the root of all the suffering and evil in Berserk. As you may recall, it goes "put your grasses on Nothing will be wrong" But none of the characters are wearing any "grasses" hence, everything "will be wrong"
"Returned with a controversial new animation style."
That's putting it lightly.
Enclosed Pool Area I get a queasy stomachs every time they switch angles
For whatever reason, the Japanese just do not do 3d Animation very well. American and European studios do nothing but show "how it's done" and the Japanese still can not seem to take the hint.
DocWolph It's because most of it is trying to mimic how 2d animation looks. If they just let it be its own thing it would go so much better
I know. I just didn't want to "that guy, the know it all" again.
There are plenty of series that do 3d well. This series is just ugly, has terrible directing, and is just uninspired.

But the animation is also an act of artistic violence though......

I'm a little disappointed they didnt go through Religion Vs Paganism themes in Berserk as well as Cosmic Horror Mental Health and Effects of War this is why most wanted them to cover the Manga
pecu alex Shoulda specified I meant Organized Religion
The anime has it but I think there are so many themes that Wisecrack got lazy to cover them all...
in the manga it specifically states that the paganism the witches worship is the same as the farsee worship. what one calls gods is an angel in another name.
"Religion Vs Paganism" that is a amazing idea for a wisecrack to do.
Also, the art in the manga is GORGEOUS. There is so much detail and work put into it that even those who hate violence would admire it
Some of the best artistic work iv seen in a while!! Just started reading it!!!
This is something that I don't often see, which is a shame considering that I think the violence that happens within Berserk is an important.
i thought it was the '97 too...
He said that while there are plenty of other themes, they were focusing on violence because it's a more subtle philosophical aspect, and one that hasn't been as well covered.
100% true
I can't believe he skipped over all the Nietzsche stuff
The comment section :
USE THE FUCKING MANGA - 70%
At least use the 90s show - 25%
But still good vid - 5%
Nicholas de Sousa I mean the 5% were still wrong because using the 2016-17 anime only gives you about 40% of the story and only about 30% of the context to understand the story and it’s kind of obvious no effort was put into the research of the series.
Honestly this video was pretty lacking. It seems like the people who wrote this only watched the 2016 series without the necessary context. The manga is so much better than the show in the areas discussed, and it’s a shame they barely made mention to it. Watch the SuperEyepatchWolf video instead
agree on that
supereyepatchwolf has the best in depth anime and manga reviews out that I've seen
another good mention is the weeklyshonenpodcast on podbean.com
They either don’t have the time or don’t actually care. I think it’s the latter.
Totally agree with you. This analysis was super empty...
Frxsty doesn’t matter. That just means they were lazy. Since they threw 30 Years of material away.
Oh shit, better put my grasses on
null akjg you made me fucking chuckle
null akjg tell me why, tell me why...
Yees! Hahahaha
Best opening of Berserk!
I already have them on.
The Philosophy of CLANG
and GRASSES
Two contrasting philosophies: CLANG CLANG vs GRASSES
Loved the GLANGviction arc.
Ben Glaser actually he is right.
In fact god is evil in berserk world
When I first read the manga I actually thought Mozgus was a demon, but with with a suppressed, human form (same to his followers).
@@vixolp more like god is the idea of evil created by the accumulated evil of all humanity
I haven't even watched it yet and I'm already disappointed that it's not the manga
skimven4242564 I deeply euphoric when I saw it but when I saw (anime) I felt as much disappointment as my parents feel towards me
You could've just show manga panels. This is giving me eye cancer.
For a fact 😭😭
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, my favorite. Still reading the Manga
It's the greatest.
at the end of the year it's supposed to come out of hiatus, the author went on a break to play a game he was waiting for
The manga is absolutely gorgeous and breathtaking
Still reading the magna? The author's still writing it. I'm so glad they're off the boat ...
Who came back here after the news broke?
RIP Kentaro Miura 🙏
You've done so much for the community, may your soul rest in peace.
berserk manga is love, berserk manga is life...
It's ironic how there's so much philosophical stuff going on in a series titled "Berserk".
Yes and violence is pretty much at the bottom of the list, yet was sadly what they focused on.
You don't know the fucking half of it
Hired Sword To be fair they at least acknowledged that violence is, in fact, bottom of the list. Seems like they're building up to the more central themes.
Hired Sword Pretty sure the return doubled down on the violence
There's a philosophy behind every piece of artwork every created, no matter how poorly executed, convoluted, or otherwise obtuse. One of the most important works of art in the 20th century was a urinal, after all.
Can we get a "Philosophy of Samurai Jack" next time?
Is the goal really what the Human want to achieve or something like that.
(pls know i didnt watch samurai jack i look from the outside and know only a few spoilers)
I think Samurai Jack is vapid. So about style that it actually pushes out substance.
+Thoreaux "Samurai Jack is vapid." lol Did we watch the same series?
*And watch SuperEyepatchWolf's vid and Alecxandxr's.* They had carefully and precisely discussed about the anime and manga of Berserk.
milky bones yea he really passed me off with this with this inaccurate video
I haven't read the manga and I thoroughly enjoyed the 97 show and OVAs.
Even more before watching the video till the end I anticipate a Crunchyroll ad coming up
To be honest, making a thorough video that analyses the philosophy of Berserk, would end up with a run time of half a day. So this video is passable.
Nah it's a VRV promotion though...
my thoughts also
If you think that's bad, you should've seen "Philosophy of Dragonball." They didn't even seem to know that the Funimation Dub of Goku was very different from the Toei one.
Ugh, why couldn’t Wisecrack use the gorgeous drawings and outlines from the berserk manga, instead of this emotionless uncanny cgi bullshit. Smh
"ads (Crunchyroll)" duh . . .
Cause they don't move
cause this guys are fucking pieces of shit
Raul Rojas these guys*
NMH
Only philosophy in the anime and not the manga?
Oh no... this comment section is gonna be such a shitfest.
Indeed. But will the manga ever be finished? Before ASoIaF or One Piece?
im gonna just guess but i understand that they chose the anime cause then they need to read he whole series multiple times which thy dont have the time.
Still just speculation
Because vrv and crunchyroll sponsored this video, and because there is more video & dialogue material from the new one to make this video
it already is
I don't personal think it will. I'd bet $100 that Berserk won't end before ASoIaF or One Piece. A bet I would be happy to lose.
“I need to watch things die, from a good safe distance” -vicarious, tool
the biggest horror in berserk is to wait for the next hiatus to stop. and when it stops and you get all you're hopes and dreams up you get one chapter and then get handed to crippling depression for another year of hiatus :D
Uhm...
Man this is gross just read the manga
*cough* *cough* read the manga *cough*
NEVER WATCH BERSERK!
READ IT!!!
JorgEduardorR too late... already seen it... but I have been reading the manga lately...
JorgEduardorR
I did read the
*subtitles*
Personally I believe that people should at least watch the 1997 series...Susumu Hirasawa music is part of the experience....whenever I hear the ''Gatsu theme'', I remember that beatuful scene between him and Caska...
The movies Golden Arc was amazing. The first episode of the 1997 was pure joy, I love the snake man and the heaving armed Guts, it was like Conan. You can watch it and read it like true fans, forget about the 3D one tho'
wrong! the 97 anime perfectly adapts the manga.
To be honest, making a thorough video that analyses the philosophy of Berserk, would end up with a run time of half a day. So this video is passable.
Berserk as more than one philosophy to it, so you yourself are wrong in your statement.
to be fair, in Guts' case it's not the violence that repels us but the "clang"
Capitan Spoiler and boat rides
Omg the new series with the clanv drove me away
11:10 Almost raped? Someone hasn't read the manga...
I was about to say that. God damit. Casca is an unlucky target for this series.
And it wasn't just Griffith either
Guts did everything wrong while Grifith did nothing wrong
I read the manga back in early 2016, but I don't recall her getting raped by it back then.
Flying Pilgrim she had a mutated demon baby because of griffith raping her.
Philosophy of - WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT
Nightfall Shadow I'm not bad I'm just drawn thst way
There is a deeper philosophy to Berserk than just violence... the show questions what it calls "the laws of Causality", karma, fate. If we are locked into a pre-ordained mortal life or if we can choose the outcome of our life through seer will power alone!
Wow. That animation style hurts.
primitive
Yeah, that 3D is pretty primitive
I guess you simply don't understand true art
Watch the 1997 anime it looks old but is still stunning. The manga also has some fantastic art.
It's a shame, because the manga is absolutely gorgeous; even when it's grotesque and horrible, specially when it's grotesque and horrible
"And it has returned with a controversial new animation style"
*cough* Eyepatch Wolf *cough*
I loved his video. It was to the anime as the Plinkeet reviews were to the prequels.
Why did you include the 2016 one. That's not Berserk, that's an abomination. Why wisecrack WHY
aboanimation !
Because they were paid for it. They don't care what they acttualy talk about, they just get someone to make script and someone to read it.
it doesn't matter. they are talking about the philosophy not visuals.
The Circle
I call bullshit.
One of the strongest points of Berserk is conveying weight of sittuation through visuals. Miura balances this pretty damn well using only black and white.
Saying that visuals don't matter is like saying that it doesn't matter what painting looks like as long as it means something.
i have not read or see the 90's one, but my honest question is are they not the same story? honestly asking because I have no idea.
Guts is a Nietzschean hero.
If you REALLY wanted to lose ad revenue, you'd have talked about the Lost Children/conviction arc from the manga. "Adult Attack!!"
TheTsugnawmi2010 ;-; stahp
or the Black Swordsman Arc-the Count Chapter, Mozgus’s torture chamber, or Quliphoth.
Or Wyald's shenanigans /:
Lost Children would have ruined this theory.
They skipped over some of the best parts of Berserk just because a few softies couldn't handle the realness of the Lost Children Arc

The world needs more of this. Please, another Berserk video.
Wow. So this is just about the violence? Worst way to talk about the philosophy of berserk
When in reality it's man vs the forces of fate and himself
Carter It's about violence, horror, friendship, ultimate betrayal and fate
De-monitized? More like Demon-itized.
Daniel Williams Pun of the frickin’ Month.
Thank you, thank you.
Daniel Williams niiiiiice
Daniel Williams aaayyyyyyyeeeee
Ouch, you’re making my brand bleed!
Hey bud. I feel you missed it. The beauty of Berserk much more in the story and in the characterization than in the genre. And the artwork! Read the manga. The anime is watered down, in terms of storytelling as well as with the gore and all that.
Umm, the video only covers the violence, genius...
I’m definitely repulsed by the animation
It's also lazy. It's clearly just 3D Computer animation with anime skin put over it.
Handsome Jack Honestly Rick and Morty is animated better than Berserk 2016 and that is just pitiful.
as a hardcore berserk fan (my profile pic) i agree , that being said , check out the manga :) it's totally non repulsive , in the matter of fact , it's amazing
TWallrus LMFAO How sad for you
your not the only one
*Philosophy of Psycho-Pass*
Amazing how much depth u go into, without even needing to touch on any of the more interesting stuff on Berk. Please do more Berserk episodes.
THE MANGA, SHOW THE MANGA FFS
WHY DID THEY ANALYSE VIOLENCE ? free will and fate is the most important theme in beserk...
JtktΘmb for someone who is doing a single sponsored video. its unrealistic for them to read the entire manga and do a philosophy of. the philosophy of berserk is obviously much deeper but this video just covered the underwhelming 2016 anime
oh yes, i didn't thought about that
JtktΘmb I'm a little disappointed they didnt go through Religion Vs Paganism themes in Berserk as well as Cosmic Horror Mental Health and Effects of War this is why most wanted them to cover the Manga
Plus my grandchildren will be on their death bed by the time they finally finish the manga. Same with Vagabond.
Can you do The last Airbender please? (The Show not the movie)
That anime is not Berserk.
That anime is a PIECE OF SHIT and you are right, is not berserk at all.
Well it's what we got so..
It still a Berserk anime because Hirasawa Susuma and Shiro Sagisu did the soundtrack (it was awesome) and that’s just putting it lightly.
it doesn't matter.
Lilbambina90 The manga is.
RIP Miura. You had the more guts than any of us ever will.
BEEN WAITING for this since you began the philosophy of series!
Why did you not use the manga?
Jared, just read the manga. Anime doesn't make it justice.
Laira Klock the first anime was great
Nice thoughts guys but the footage you used from the anime is so unbelievably awful, it brings the whole quality of the video down.
Still a good video.
please be the 1997 anime.
Manga*
it's not, should've seen that coming, I am disappoint
The Eclipse is the one scene from 1997 that Wisecrack shows.
The 1997 anime is Berserk for me. Even the manga doesn't live up to it for me.
Yeah, it was a terrible idea
You know, the *MOVIES* were a lot better than I expected. I kinda wanted that format to keep going on.
Finally , I was waiting for you to make a video on Berserk !
Keep up with the good stuff !
Thank you for removing the frying pan sound that the sword makes every time it touches something
do a philosophy episode on Rurouni Kenshin 👌🏻
Yes please.
That will be good. Manga was superb and live-action films did whatever they can. I can't wait for 4th film.
That wasn't really philosophy. That was just aesthetics. It blows my mind how, in a 14 minute video, you didn't come up with Gatsu deciding to seperate from Griffith in order to follow his own dream. It's pretty obvious.
Why did you choose the 2016 berserk?
Been watching this page for a lil while. Enjoy every video! Keep it up
I must say, your videos are top notch.
Kentaro Miura
F
This is the most superficial analysis I've ever seen.
There is soooo much more to talk about in berserk. Instead you guys decided to talk about "violence. What does it mean?"
Next time on Wisecrack
" The Philosophy of Bible Black "
" The Philosophy of La Blue Girl "
" The Philosophy of Words Worth "
LightningBS .
LightningBS i would like to see their take on “Kite” tbh that hentai has some solid philosophical background i think
Gokay CEKLI Some hentai inspired films wouldn't translate well into mainstream anime. So, they're not stupid.
I actually would like to see a Bible Black one, just to see how they would do it...
When are you doing the next berserk video ??
Even tho this ignores almost everything important about berserk, it highlights one central pillar extremely well. My respect is earned
"Eclipse was just a social experiment guys, calm down" - Griffith
Also, He did nothing wrong.
I'd love to see you guys do "The Philosophy of Warhammer 40k"
they would probably just say that its grimdark so there's a lot of violence. Time to stretch that to 13mins DEEP ANALYSIS
This was fascinating.
In society such ideas are considered dangerous.
But “know thine enemy” makes a fascinating study
I CLANG therefore I am.
Read
the
Manga
Please do evangelion next
They'll never do it justice in a single episode, I guarantee you.
no it's pretentious and overrated
They could focus on the last two episodes, or a specific character or the philosophy of the angels. There are many angles to analyze from
I don´t agree. I would define pretentious as giving out a bunch of words and terms and not actually using it in practice in the show. If you look att End of Evangelion the creator doesn't´t give you any of the answers which leaves you with your own interpretation.
+Mahad Hassan The Angels have no philosophy. They were only added in to give the series a nice aesthetic. The real stuff is found in the characters.
The 97 anime intro very clearly states the root of all the suffering and evil in Berserk. As you may recall, it goes
"put your grasses on
Nothing will be wrong"
But none of the characters are wearing any "grasses" hence, everything "will be wrong"
0:06 “today we’re talking about a show that’s definitely gonna get us demonetized” had 3 ads in the video :/
be sure to like subscribe hit the bell and become a patreon its only thanks to them that they can make this video LOL kill me
Havent watched this yet. But it BETTER not be about the FUCKING NEW ONE
TheUnderratedGamer it is kms
TheUnderratedGamer PRANKED
*CLANG*
Stark Legion please I came here for philosophical knowledge not memes
CLANG CLANG CLANG
oh no. not This Berserk. You could've used footage from the movies or the 1997 anime.
4:49 sums up Jhin from league of legends perfectly and is basically all you need to know behind the philosophy behind him.
When he made the new berserk the thumbnail and you're not sure who to blame, him or the company.
