- Опубліковано 4 чер 2024
- In preparation for Suicide Squad, we created this special Wisecrack Edition diving into the philosophy of THE JOKER. We highlight some of the most lasting incarnations of the Clown Prince of Crime, including Alan Moore's origin story in The Killing Joke, Christopher Nolan's interpretation in The Dark Knight (starring Heath Ledger, RIP), and portrayals by Jack Nicholson (1989) and Cesar Romero (1966). The episode explores similarities and connections between The Joker and his rival-slash-muse, Batman.

The thing about the Joker, and one of the things that makes him so terrifying, is that he's right a lot of the time. He's not mentally insane. He's just so dangerous that they don't know what to do with him, so they lock him up. Whenever you see Hamill's or Heath's Joker, pay close attention to what they say. They challenge society, thinking it's one big joke.
That's why I'm worried about Leto's Joker. Not only does he not scare me, but I feel like they're just playing him as a psychopath. Joker, by definition, is a psychopath. But he's also so much more. I'm really excited for SS, but super nervous about Mr. J.. He just doesn't have that classic Joker feel. Seems like a Joker fanboy, not the real deal
true on that heath's joker you can tell he was insane but there was something else heath's joker was getting a point across. leto's joker just seems to be acting like a mad man, joker is a mad man but he always has a hidden meaning behind his madness
no
In just one week we will see if his joker is great or not, even though I doubt we will go inside his head like we did in the dark knight since it's not a batman movie. From what I have seen though, I like Leto's joker a lot.
***** of course we're not gonna go inside his head like in the batman movie but hopefully its a more meaningful joker not just insane killer but we'll see
Leto looks likes someone you don't want to fuck with. Heath didn't scare me one bit, because he was never able to be The Joker. I just saw Heath.
Joker is a gangster. Red Hood Gang ring a bell? That's Leto. Perfect.
Madness is like gravity,
All it takes is a Little... Push

That idea of "one bad day" was explored a bit in Daredevil, too. The Punisher even says the line you gave almost verbatim. "You're just one bad day away from being me."
projectbaum thats the idea behind the punisher overall
@@FrizzyyYou mean, The Punisher is "What If The Joker was a superhero?"
@@louisduarte8763 If you think about it, DC has two Joker-esque anti-heroes: Rorschach and The Comedian. Rorschach is especially a mix of Batman meets The Joker meets The Punisher.
The Punisher is opposite of Joker in many ways, he never laughs, never hurts innocents and sees everything jn black and white
@Sateki Taulanga Not exactly true in all takes of the Joker. Not that Joker ever really works w the heroes, but I definitely think he's more of an anti villain because of this one simple fact: in most incarnations of the Joker, he generally targets the mob more often than he does innocent people 3 examples are Jack Nicholson Joker, Heath Ledger's Joker, and the Joker targeting Black Mask. And even in Mask of the Phantasm for a 4th). I think this is becausw his most likely origin is a former mob henchman who was betrayed by them which helped lead to him becoming who he is, and as a result he wants to end corruption not only with the mob but other layers of government causing the corruption as well, just in much more extreme manner which doesn't make him the "hero" , but in The Dark Knight he gets everything accomplished he wanted, from beginning to end, not one plan was foiled.
Hes almost always portrayed as an anarchist too, similar to guys like Anarky (couldn't have guessed that, huh??😂😂) that want to end corruption just like Batman, only takes it a step further not only targeting mobsters but corrupt government officials i.e. police, judges, mayors, etc. They just literally have no rules and don't mind harming innocent people to get their point across which makes them clash with Batman who always defends the establishment.
Ironic how the Joker's mission to prove life's meaningless gives his life meaning
Or iconic :)
Irony is the exact point where opposites meet in the middle of an infinite loop. The Joker is crazy, but completely in control. He follows a rule, but that rule is to break other rules. He is a nihilistic entity, but he follows a code.
In essence, even the craziest man has a road to walk on. I think that's the whole point of the Joker as a character. Everyone has a path and therefore, a choice
@@hotlikelava276 fuckin beautiful..
That's why Existentialism is the answer.
Yeah, the human person cannot escape meaning or narrrative. It is a given. part of the actuality of spiritual consciousness.
"you are one bad day away from me"
Punisher
he (writers of punisher) stole it from The Killing joke
Regardless of who did it first, it worked perfectly in both situations.
funny part is castle once allmost killed the joker.
One of the reasons at least some fans love pitting Punisher against Joker; for the most part, neither really gives a s***. Joker, as Alfred said, "just wants to watch the world burn", while Castle wants to hunt down murderers, rapists, and pretty much the very worst of humanity, and end them, once and for all.
One of the biggest problems I see when starting "work" as a superhero or antihero; the work NEVER ends. Once you start that particular war, you NEVER stop fighting, you can't, because you made yourself a target for evil, and just like running from bullies, evil will not let you take a vacation. When you start the fight, you fight, and fight, and fight. There may come lulls in the battle, but vigilance is the price heroes and antiheroes pay, to keep evil at bay.
Man I can get passionate about this stuff😀.
wildside316 Also, both just want to prove their points. Punisher wants to show the world that sometimes, the only way to stop bad people from doing bad things is to kill them. Joker wants to show the world how hypocritical and meaningless it is. Both guys argue that we are way more selfish and self-centered than we think, letting our ego guide us more than our intelligence, and that compassion is often misguided and is a weakness rather than a strength. You're right, neither really gives a shit, because they laugh at the idea of morality. Morality doesn't apply to them, yet in a strange way, they only want to do what they think is right. Most people would call them insane. I'd argue that they're the most intelligent of us all, because they can see the difference between an emotional response and a rational one. We often can not, which is why our world is the way it is.
Yup, I can get pretty passionate about this stuff as well, haha. Love this shit.
Heath Ledger's Joker is just so great to watch when onscreen. Truly awe inspiring performance.
Tristan Matheny the joker in the dark knight is about anarchy the joker in the killing joke etc. Is radical existential nihilism
I actually prefer watching Mark Hamill's animated Joker. Not necessarily because he's better - he is undoubtedly the greatest voice for the Joker but Heath Ledger embodied every previous Joker (Nicholson, Hamill, even his giggle during the interrogation scene sounds somewhat similar to Romero) whilst also adding his own to the mix, so he fully deserved the Oscar his family accepted after his death - but because I actually find it easier to watch cartoons and animated movies/shows. It's like CinemaWins said in his Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them review (which you should watch if you haven't already); some actors are so good at their craft that they ruin my suspension of disbelief. When I can't find a single thing wrong with a performance, it actually makes me feel kind of guilty that I can't fully get into it and I'm getting distracted by my own nit-picky, overly-critical mindset. However, in the case of cartoons or computer generated movies, it's easier for me to relax because I know they're not trying to be real life.
Watched the dark night cause of him
"They laugh at me because i'm different. I laugh at them because they're all the same" - Joker

The more I see joker, the more reality terrifies me. joker is an expression of everyone's dark side that they are too afraid to face. and people know it. Everyone is the Joker at some point in their lives, but not everyone can face it like Joker. Even Batman has been running from his own darkness time to time.
Except the dark side is really the enlightent side, the side that sees the world as empty as it really is
Ken Wong Well in all honesty, there is no dark side, like the video said, merely a flip of a coin of one face. Joker's point is to prove that no matter how morally good we see our selves, we all have the capabilities of turning out like him; of which, as in the video, we all carry an aspect of joker's personality with us.

All it takes is one bad day
The "One Bad Day" concept could have been tied to Philip Zimbardo's "The Lucifer Effect," in which he studies the experiments of Stanley Milgram and real life examples like the tragedy at Abu Ghraib to show that what the Joker claims may be true; that a seemingly good or normal person, under certain circumstances, can become immoral or even vicious. It is kind of scary that the Joker's thesis is backed by modern psychology...but the moral reaction to Joker's thesis needn't be a rejection of it. On the contrary, we ought to recognize that human beings are in a way only as moral as are their situations so that we can better avoid situations that jeopardize moral ideals.
The problem is that society upholds what is moral or not, if society itself is hypocrite, saying that someone is a very bad man because he is a serial killer, and never the less, the same society allows to bombs cities to the ground killing men, woman and children. Who tells what is good or bad?
I don't see the majority of people killing at will because circumstances call for those kinds of actions. Normal people would not want to be stuck in a perpetual cycle of war and destruction. Can't see it. That theory ignores our collective history of peace making. It's not so black and white.
bob polo Tell that to the 30 years war, to the 100 years war, to the current perpetual war, to the seven years wars, etc. Humans are violent, greedy and selfish, it part of our human nature, not matter how much you want to justified our "moral" side, humans always would end killing each other and make up excuses to try to justified their actions, to try to be the good guy by definition not matter how horrible are their acts.
The argument isn't about whether humans are good or bad. We aren't either. We can be good and we can be bad. We are often good, and we are often bad.
TheKeyser94 Soldiers go to war bro. You think soldiers represent the general population? And society doesn't bomb cities with men, women, and children. Soldiers in war do that. You think the present society would consistently vote yes for perpetual war? What world do you live in?

In my opinion the JOKER ALWAYS WINS NO MATTER WHAT.Even if BATMAN KILLS THE JOKER Batman still loses .This is why JOKER is the greatest villain HISTORY.
That's true. Makes me think, maybe the quality of villains can be based on the likelihood that they'll defeat the heroes. So new villains that haven't proven themselves to be dangerous aren't very memorable. But someone like Darth Vader who controls armies, chokes people with the force and can order a planet's destruction is very unlikely to be beaten. But the Joker's likelihood of win percentage would be 100% because even if Batman kills him, that would just be proving the Joker right, which is really what the battle is about.
The funny thing is that he loses laughing. He keeps on laughing. It's all a big joke to him.

Very few understand why the Joker laughs. How he feels. He doesn't enjoy this at all.
He didn't suddenly become a joyous and happy homicidal maniac.
On several occasions, he wanted it to end. He has blatantly tried to kill himself or put himself in harm's way.
The Joker laughs at misery. Others' misery, and his own. All life is one cruel joke to him.
He causes misery because he feels he should not be the only one to suffer injustice.
He is miserable. The absurdity of what his particular life has done to him makes him laugh.
"I'm only laughing on the outside. My smile is just skin deep.

As the video says, Batman won the fight, but Joker wins the argument.
A lil weeb Batman didn’t kill Joker. There is no proof that this happened. The script states they were just laughing together and Alan Moore outright stated he didn’t intend Batman killing Joker at all. The comic is canon too. Batman didn’t kill Joker.

In the Dark Knight, one of the Mobsters called Joker crazy, Joker simply replied that he's not. So to call him insane is to miss the point.
Jokes is an ENTP, almost all ENTP don't consider the existence of right or wrong. An entp will think that the society is trying to impose what is right or wrong, this is why Joker doesn;t consider himself crazy, because he has his own set of rules and he is consistent in them.

He's doesnt challenge Batman physically, but philosophically. Which means he actually has a point. He kinda defies any previous concept of morality and he simply wants to prove humanity's true face... he actually did with Harvey Dent. And if Batman didnt cover Dent's crimes, the people of Gotham would prove Joker was right.
Hell, even before that, the people in those boats wanted to blow up the shit out of each other. They didnt because they couldnt(they didnt have the balls) but they wanted(by letting someone else do the job). You could see it in their faces.
I dont think his point is to say "there's no such thing as evil", but its more like "there's evil in every one of you, and Im gonna prove it". He even calls himself and agent of chaos. So he knows the difference between chaos and order, but he probably knows the difference between good and evil too. He just doesnt care about it.

I've always thought that the best origin story of the Joker would just be... he felt like it. I know that's not particularly deep, but I think that that the idea of him coming from a pitiable situation misses the point. Also, having no reason for what he does draws him as even more of an inverse of Batman, who is constantly reminded of the tragedy that created him.
I love every word you wrote

"a joke is bad when you have to explain it"
AlecPlease Exactly. I'm so tired of the Joker walking us through his worldview like he was a Philosophy 101 professor. Either 1) ...we aren't stupid, or, 2) ...we enjoy a mystery.
I was having this discussion with a friend that the best way to picture the meaningless of life is The Sims, where you often die by a housefire because you were making some pancakes. Not a poetic death by a evil murderer during stormy weather, not by a terminal disease with your whole family by the bed side. Just the meaningless and random way that life works. Saying that a good and meaningfull Joker needs chaos to be brought is just as fair and logical as a Joker that overreacted because someone spoiled to him the last Game of Thrones episode. His life is just about that. The void of lack of purpose. All that's left is to laught about it and be as much fair as life is and go rampaging around
Alison Sanches Krinski It must have some truth to it because your "death by pancakes" example certainly made me laugh!

"If I'm going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice!" - Joker
What's scary to me is what the Joker is capable of. His intellect his way to manipulate people his strategy, he's not just crazy. If you look at it a certain way Jack Napier was able to become his best self through throwing away all forms of sensibility, throwing away any form of doubt or judgment. Since nothing matter why matter what he wear how he act, life is meaningless so why not jump into danger. He's able to put his absolute all into everything he does because at the end of it all it won't matter there by being the ultimate Joke. He's able to be his ultimate self because all the forms of insecurity and doubt doesn't matter in the end.
“It’s kinda the modern fashion to give your characters PTSD after they’ve been through something sufficiently rough. And you can see that most strongly in the character of Batman, because it’s a new development. Batman as a traumatized vigilante haunted by the death of his parents is a recent thing. It sounds crazy, but in his initial characterization he wasn’t traumatized, he was _motivated._ He went through something horrible and decided he would devote his life to guaranteeing that nobody would have to go through something like that ever again. The modern version where the death of his parents haunts and twists him into a night-stalking monster is recent.
And you know something? This is all Alan Moore’s fault!
Much as I appreciate “Killing Joke”, it unintentionally sparked the idea that deep down, Batman & Joker are the same. That they were both broken men driven by personal tragedy beyond the point of sanity. But Alan Moore didn’t mean for that to be the takeaway from the comic, and the killing joke of the Joker is wrong. His premise that ‘all it takes is one bad day’ is blatantly disproven both by Commissioner Gordon and by Batman.
And you know what? Comparing dressing up like a Bat and fighting crime to repeated acts of domestic terrorism, each with absurdly high body counts is not fair! One of those things is psychotic, the other is something every kid wants to do! (You decide which is which)
The idea that Batman does what he does because he’s cracked completely defeats the purpose of his character. He does what he does because he knows what it’s like to be powerless and so takes it on himself to be the power that helps the powerless.
A good sign of whether or not your Batman is being characterized properly is as follows: Can you picture this Batman comforting a scared child? If yes, congratulations! This is a certified Batman! If not, then I’m afraid you instead have the Punisher in a silly hat.”

Nope.
He is supersane because he knows that he is in a show the killing he does is not real but effects everyone else thats the joke they care about a universe that is not even real. There a lot of scenes where things that make people insane makes joker sane and sorrow
Skeleton King imaginary axis
He's able to take a peek into our world which they call "Earth Prime". Owlman thought he found his way into it. He was wrong...
I'd still say he's insane. The main reason people say he's not is because one psychiatrist said he wasn't... but that psychiatrist was Dr. Quinzel, aka Harley Quinn, a woman who was in love with him and at the time wanted him out of the asylum.
Another psychiatrist, one that wasn't in love with him, let us know with proof that he is a psychopath who lacks human emotion, who just put on the laughter and smile as a shield against the outside world. That was Dr. Crane, aka Scarecrow. The evidence was the multiple occasions he sprayed Joker with the fear-gas, with no effect.
The Joker has no fear, not even a single shred of fear. There are only two types of people who lack fear, psychopaths (lacking all emotions) and people with brain damage. Both display a lack of sanity, hence they are insane.
Both Dr. Quinzel and Dr. Crane were right in classifying him as a psychopath, but that doesn't mean he's insane. Psychopathy is an antisocial disorder I believe. When someone completely disregards societies norms and moralities and live by their own terms, as the video blatantly states. A psychopath lack's all emotions yes, but unlike insanity, they feel no remorse over the crimes they've commited (this case Joker). Insane people have a tendency to feel guilty. They will have moments of clarity and realize what they've done is not right - by societies standards. Its a momentary lapse in conscience, but it's there, a feature that a psychopath lacks. Insanity is also associated to most as a legal term, mainly in court. Claiming insanity states that you weren't in control of yourself during the crime, and when you came to, you felt remorse for what you've done (possible affecting you're sentence if proven insane). A psychopath though is always in control and aware of who they are and their surroundings. They can't claim insanity because they don't regret any of their actions. You're argument in lack of fear is just another fact that proves Joker is a psychopath. Fear at its core, is nothing but an emotion. A disturbing one and extremely dangerous, but an emotion. Joker lacks all emotion, therefor he lacks fear. Cementing Dr. Cranes assessment on him. Also, we mustn't disregard Dr. Quinzel's analysis. Just because she fell in love with him, didn't me she didn't diagnose him incorrectly. It just make their relationship even more heartbreaking and disturbing, for she knew he was a psychopath while she was falling for him.
Insanity requires an inability to differentiate from reality and fantasy or right from wrong. Neither of those conditions apply to Joker. The Joker has far too much self awareness to be considered insane.
The reason joker doesnt fear anything is because he knows all of this is fiction its pointless
@@Brenda-tv8tx wtf are you talking about? Are you really know what are you talking? Just non sense.
Psychopathy is different from insanity though
We have many reasons to believe that joker is not insane, but rather, self aware and evil, pleading insanity would absolve Joker of some of his moral weight, but his agency is clear enough that this would be foolish
"cuz when they laugh, they feel good!" god, he must've been precious before that fall into the chemicals. a precious, pure cinnamon bun.

Watch the video and listen to the voice-over. Perhaps one day you'll be able to form your own thoughts of "existentialism" without the help of Google. - Gonna go listen to Alanis Morrisette now.
I liked how you did not answer the one question that lies at the core of your statement.
Dude but most of the stuff he says makes a lot of sense. It really does just take ONE bad day for someone to snap.
The guards at soviet Gulags hated taking in devout orthodox Christians because it was often impossible to torture them into false confessions.
No one else compared, even hardened criminals would fabricate their own confessions to stop the torture.

"Alan Moore's magnum opus, The Killing Joke..."
I don't know who wrote this script, but Moore's Watchmen series is far and away much more deserving of that magnum opus description.
just nitpicking. Great video otherwise!
Indeed
I think what he meant was in the grand scheme of Joker stories it is the "magnum opus."
That or "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow"
***** Alan Moore doesn't regret writing it, he regrets all the people who took that and Watchmen and made a bunch of dumb needlessly dark comics just to be "edgy" instead of creating more mature and intelligent comics to show people who thought the comic book genre was a waste and only meant for braindead children. People take that quote and blow it out of proportion for their own "agendas" as to why Killing Joke is so terrible and all that nonsense. Not that I think thats what you're doing but I've seen it from other less intelligent people. Of course his other work is superior mostly do to length and that they tell complete stories as opposed to Killing Joke which is more of a snapshot in Batman and Joker's existence. If there is anything he should regret writing it's some of the Image work he did in the 90's. Not even his prose could save some of that garbage.
*Joker wants to reveal people's true nature behind all the bravado, the suits, & the sophistication. That despite how upright people want to portray themselves, they are always as bad if not worse than him. Hence proving this when people decided to attack/kill the lawyer when Joker threatened to blow up a/the hospital when he told Gotham that he won't unless the laywer is killed. Also almost proving this again when he gave detonators for the people to blow up the other boat or else all of the people die.*
*He realized that revealing to people their own true nature puts everyone at the same plane field of self-awareness. Therefore, there's justly no immoral people being controlled by other immoral people just because the latter has a badge or wears a suit. For example, the top government or Elite who go about divide & conquer are just as bad at heart as the man/woman who committs manslaughter & is in prision. Joker believes in no rules because with no rules, survival of the fittest commences & that's the only justifiability to society. Everyone's truly antagonistic & corrupt at heart & simply expresses it in different ways regardless of their race, gender, societal class, or back-story.*
*He's not a traditional nihilist nor anarchist; Joker doesn't believe life is meaningless but the way people go about self-delusion causes their lives to be meaningless; living in fictional world(s). Joker doesn't believe in violence for the sake of violence yet anarchy amongst all types of people of the masses & higher classes is simply natural selection & results in the "right" people or people who earned the right to be in charge. Anarchy is a state of disorder due to absence or nonrecognition of authority. Therefore, anarchy is a result of kicking the hypocritical authority out of the fray, so that we can start from scratch again. He believes chaos is fear; fear of refusing to embrace the true selfish & individualistic nature of oneself. Joker is an agent of this because he acknowledges this & goes about showing it so we can press the reset button & see who truly deserves to be at the top, not through various ideals of right/wrong but to prove who's at right or wrong through who can best the other in the mist of chaos.*
*The fact that innocents can be killed & the fact that specific groups being portrayed in the mainstream news as perfect victims have (secretly) outright killed others: means there are no innocents. Joker sees himself as a brutally honest (revelation) of the heart/subconscious of humanity. He understands yet we don't.*
*That means your life is a joke.*
*So who's really crazy?... LOL.*
"It's all a joke! Everything everybody's ever valued or struggled for, it's all just a monstrous, demented gag! So why can't you see the funny side? Why aren't you laughing?"
Breathtaking analysis!
You nailed it after the first text.
I mean, half the movie he already made his point and by the end of the movie he already proved it, not only with Harvey Dent, but with the people on those boats wanting to blow up each other(but didnt have the balls to so they wanted someone else to do it instead).
But after all of that... Batman and Gordon had to cover Dent's crimes for the greater good. Otherwise the people of Gotham would see what Dent did and later the city would fall into absolute madness. And the Joker would have finally prove his one single point. He would reveal people are as mad as he pretends to be... And all it took was a little push.
All you have revealed is that you are a joker.
Tricking you into believing that your life is a joke was his goal all along. Once you've seen yourself as a joker, and embraced being a joker, you have lost the fight.
Your description is waterproof except from the assumption that he wants to see who truly deserves to be at the top. This is bullshit.
Brilliant analysis.
Well done, Wisecrack.
Now that you've done Joker, how about Harley?
Yeah that would be interesting.

I'll tell you the philosophy of the joker. when i was at my dad's funeral. it was open casket. he looked so different, so different that I had an insane urge to laugh. laugh when my father, my best friend, was dead. My heart was full of sorrow, but I still had the urge to laugh, to throw all conscious thought to the wind and lose it in a wave of insane and complete Insanity.bro laugh and feel nothing but joy even though my dad was dead and in his casket in front of me. that's the philosophy of the joker.
Charlie Clark great
Charlie Clark laughter is just a reaction to high stress situations. stress can be good and bad, and makes some people laugh or cry or both simultaneously.

For all of the terrible things that the Joker has done in the world of Batman I will the first (as far as I'm aware) to admit; the Joker has a valid point.
True
there is no such thing as good and bad
"the first to admit"?
the entire theme of this video is that he 'has a point.' He represents that 'point' taken to the extreme.

This video made me like Jared Letos joker even less. I need to see more of that Joker cause nothing about him said joker to me. All I got was generic gangster. I like the weirder jokers too, my favorite joker is the one from "The Batman" series. The joker with the dreads.
Do you like gotham's Jerome or jerimah.
I didnt like letos joker then having watching getting more into the joker his joker sucks ass even more and that shit laugh he does wtf
Jared Leto has no idea of how Joker should act. He somehow accomplishes making The Joker seem shallow.
Comrade Cheese right its boring his joker and joker is anything but boring
At least Leto still had Joker's dangerous unpredictability, mania and a sense of the genuine joy he gets out of crime and madness. They got the very basics of the character to a T, it's just a shame that he wasn't given enough screentime to imbue him with much depth. As an actor, Leto did his homework, like getting advice from comic writers like Grant Morrison. And people whine about his creepy, drawn out laugh, forgetting that he also bursts out with the traditional loud, manaical laugh; demonstrating that there is no one token laugh for the Joker. There are hints of other aspects of the Joker in there, such as his narcissism (what with his name and smile plastered on everything he owns), his destructive relationship with Harley (more-so in deleted scenes) and Batman (as hinted in his tattoos and the fact that he killed Robin), and as I said before, the fun he gets out of his crimes (gleefully making Groggs feel uncomfortable, using Harley to toy with Monster T, his insane grin when threatening to kill Van Criss's wife) but he just needs a script that allows him to breathe as a character and as a main villain to Batman in order to show what he's truly capable of.
awesome video dude. knocked it out of the park
I'm currently writing an academic-styled paper on Batman and the Joker and am intrigued by the level of analysis and scholarly arguments present here. I'll be sure to cite your insights in full. Thank you for making this available to a huge fan of this Universe
I literally discovered your channel not 20 minutes ago and I'm loving your material, dude. This is amazing stuff! Thank you so much :D
There are two types of Joker fans. The ones who read the comics, watch the movies, T.V. shows, and play the games. Then there's the one who saw the Dark Knight and won't SHUT UP ABOUT IT! We know it's good, but when you keep reminding people who know it's good of how good it is it devalues the greatness of the film. Seriously Dark Knight Joker fans are the worse.
I understand what you mean, but undeniably the presentation of the joker within the dark knight film is faultless. It is basically the first realistic representation of the joker, introducing a new level of 'creepiness' and relatability. One in which a wider variety of audience can accept and connect with
Harrison Woodin-Lygo I'm not saying it's bad to like it, but it is bad to keep reminding me of the fact that you (I mean other people) like it. I have eyes and have seen the movie multiple times. However, when they keep saying The Dark Knight is great, The Dark Knight is great, The Dark Knight is great, The Dark Knight is great, The Dark Knight is great, The Dark Knight is great it gets old and ruins the fun for me and I'm sure others as well.
Harrison Woodin-Lygo Plus the movie also gave Christopher Nolan a free pass on movies. Interstellar was a great film but the ending made you scratch your head for a while.
bad day?
Of course you must realize the paradoxical, nonsensical logic behind what you just said. I've seen The Dark Knight a ludicrous number of times, and indeed really had very little interest in the Batman universe until Nolan's films. Afterwards though, having been a 90's kid and been previously exposed to Batman (Burton's version and TAS), I was easily able to take the fascination gained from watching the live-action, gritty hyper-realistic Nolan adaptations of the characters a bit further, and do tons of supplementary research (reading, watching, and learning every bit of related content to the Batman universe I could get my hands on). As a result, I now have a more well-rounded perspective on these characters from a large variety of sources and interpretations, no longer simply relying on my Nolan Batman experience to understand those former comic-book characters.
That all being said, I still love The Dark Knight, and think of Heath Ledger's Joker to be the best interpretation of him due two particular reasons: (1) he is perfectly enigmatic, in the sense that we receive no *true* backstory and thus no predictive reasons for his motivations and intentions, and (2) his actions and world view are completely unapologetic (unafraid of death and pain, especially his own, because of how meaningless everything is). These aspects of his character are not always present in other interpretations of his character (done right in animated films like Under The Red Hood and Assault on Arkham, missed the mark in The Animated Series, Arkham videogame series, etc.).
So, TL;DR, I'm a "Dark Knight Joker fan", as you put it, but I'm a fan of the characters in general, I just like anyone else have my own preference of interpretation. The question you have to ask yourself then is: what kind of fan do I really hate, and moreover, how should I define that? Do you dislike people who insist The Dark Knight is a masterpiece but have little background knowledge of the original characters that birthed the concepts and plotlines? Or do you hate them perhaps because you generalize "fans" of the film to mean "think it's the best possible interpretation of the characters"?
If you must know, I have a working order to my own preferences (something most fans agree on):
- Best Live Action Joker: Heath Ledger
- Best Animated Joker: Mark Hamill
The more I listen to this video, the more I appreciate the work of Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix
This is one of the best youtube videos I have seen.
please do Earthling Cinema on 'The Big Short'... so very curious to understand Brad Pit's character and the themes of the entire movie.

thanks much! I really liked the video and the philosophy behind it.
Joker isn't insane. He's a psychopath who's been interested enough to find out why he's different and smart enough to realize that humans are not altruistic.
From everything I can tell, humans are completely self-serving. Altruism I don't even think is possible for a species to exist. The reasons we care about others is thanks to emotional empathy. I give someone a gift because it makes them happy. My empathy allows their happiness to become my own, similar to giving to myself. However, the effect is even greater, because that person feels touched that I'm happy because they are happy. This makes me happier, and them happier and so on. Multiplied happiness.
This allows for both parties to benefit in a manner that doesn't have to be material. Tit for tat can go a positive direction, but also emotional gratification is on a level that goes beyond material. This is why so many people encourage others to help others. It's one of the best feelings not because we're good people so to speak, but because of our emotional empathy. Our ability to vicariously feel happiness and success in others.
And it works, really really well. Most creatures, especially mammals have some functioning form of emotional empathy, where in they can relate to or think from another's perspective and understand how they feel emotionally and often physically. This allows for a cohesive social contract that benefits both parties.
Of course we have selective emotional empathy, as it's important to take care of your own being as well as survive. Too much emotional empathy allows one to feel all the pain others feel. You wouldn't be able to function if when walking somewhere you only imagined all the little living bacteria and things you are squashing with your feet.
Joker does not have this ability if he is a psychopath. He doesn't understand how that works or how it feels. or why people find it so important to uphold in a social contract, or the fact that it is very very likely a huge part of what we find important to our own existence. Happiness, and if that can be found and compounded in effect by spreading it to others, them emotional empathy is one of the best things to have. Though of course, it has it downsides, which given what I can tell the psychopaths might think, emotional empathy just seems like a huge dumb burden.
You can't miss what you never had. Joker can not understand this and thinks everyone is like him deep down. They aren't.
And yes, humor is a defense mechanism to the absurd. It's also a indication to others that things are okay. This is why someone laughing in a situation which is not okay is so terrifying. it's a paradox of a paradox.
Best response
This is a response by an empath. As an INTP, I couldn't care less about making people happy or worrying about how they feel. Empathy is a waste of time and energy.
The last time I checked being a psychopath was still a form of insanity.
@@mfv2024 Insanity is relative. It is fundamentally defined as some form of mental state that significantly deviates from the norm.
@@PassionPno says the person who feels love the most after simping for the same chick even after she died for 30 years and also protecting her child with another man. You empathetic SIMP

Dan L don't ever insult the joker like that!!!!
i guess you have a point, trump only won due to the rise of SJWs and snowflakes
tactical plunger Well, considering SWJ's and feminazis are running wild at the moment, I consider Trump to be the lesser of two evils. I think he's a shitty human being but at least he doesn't hide that he's a shitty human being. The far Left think of themselves as virtuous but they're actually some of the most hypocritical, racist, sexist and bigoted people you'll ever meet in your life. People like Kathleen Kennedy and Rian Johnson got so out of control that I wonder how much worse the situation would be if that kind of person had all the power. They've destroyed Star Wars and want to shut up anyone who doesn't like the damage they've caused, so imagine what else they could destroy if they had the power to bomb nations. At least Trump hasn't started a war.
Wisecrack never fails to impress.
The Joker is not insane, he is just the epitome of the "harsh reality" we all know and run away from.

This short passage actually summarizes how and why political correctness and social justice warriors have brought about the rise and likely election of Donald Trump. That movement has been hard at work striking down opposing perspectives, so much so that it has created a 'supergerm' or an auto-immune reaction that it cannot overcome.
Most likely how Donald Trump created a new excuse shield themselves behind the "Political Correctness" to express their most xenophobic and racist comments, I am from the 90' were we understand the clear meaning of Political Correctness or Incorrectness, now at days is only a excuse for people like you to be racist and xenophobic and shield for any backlash claiming that the one that critic you is "political correct". That is a bullshit statement of course. And the reason for the rise of Trump is the reason why the Joker is so popular, because sometimes people want to the world burn.
Nah. It's right-wing media from Robertson to Rush lying their assess off 24/7.
+TheKeyser I grew up in to 90's. Political Correctness was a joke back then, too. It's always been about controlling what you can say and how you can think. Remember when we had to call black people "African Americans"?
Dale James has a point. People are beginning to push back against this PC Culture and they should. Not because we should be racist or whatever, but because we shouldn't be and all Political Correctness does is try to mask hatred.
It's really sad when saying that I reject Political Correctness means I am a racist. No, it means I support talking honestly about things rather than using whatever newspeak nonsense someone decided was the proper terminology, which will be politically incorrect a few years later.
Saltyk Wow, you are such a child, grow up.
