    Welcome to this Wisecrack Edition on one of the most philosophically complex animated films of all time: Ghost in the Shell. Through the lens of legendary philosopher Georg Hegel, we’ll examine how Ghost in the Shell not only laid a foundation for decades of sci-fi to come, but presents us with a truly fresh and original take on the next step of human evolution. Whereas most films that explore the line between human and machine require one side to triumph over the other, Ghost in the Shell suggests something radically different.

    One of the reasons I love Ghost in the Shell so much, is because when I first encountered it, it was so fundamentally different to anything I had experienced before, It made me think, a LOT, just trying to figure out what was going on, and I love thinking.
    It feels great when I finally begin to understand something new.

      It happened to me right while seeing Akira for the first time this afternoon. I had to stop it halfway for an hour because it was overwhelming. The philosophical, ethical, and political questions whose answers we will be facing right now in this era of war, are very unsettling.
      More than ever, we must not give any right we have for granted.

    "Who's the master and who's the slave?" That reminds me of something George Orwell once said he explained simply put that when a person becomes a tyrant they not only enslave others they also enslave themselves to the role and affectively limit themselves without even realizing it for in order to keep their oppressed subjects in line they can never appear to them as anything other then a terrifying emotionally cold bully to keep them terrified and submissive for the show any amount of friendliness or emotional warmth to them would project weakness and leave their power in question and by doing that they isolate themselves having no real friends to care about them and be there for them out of love instead of out of fear of punishment in short, it's lonely at the top and they may have that power all for themselves but of all the things it brings them true happiness will never one of them and that will make them miserable. Miserable and alone forever and because they've stolen the people's freedom they will be paranoid and psychologically unstable for fear of losing that power like Joseph Stalin for instance. Because when you steal something... you spend your whole life fighting to keep it.

    • @Kaloapoele
      @Kaloapoele 2 роки тому +4

      I like how you expressed this. Speakers like Brendan Bruchard and Simon Sinik talk about “leaders eating last” and how “it’s lonely at the top” is a false self imposed relationship to have with ones employees, so some leaders try to change this (maybe related to the Christian idea “servant leaders” or leading by supporting your team). Meanwhile Douglas Ruffkoff works with the super rich who are preparing for collapse rather than reinvesting into the systems they exploited and are asking him for advise about how to keep their worker-slaves-body guards in line should that happen.
      That CEO who took a pay cut to pay all employees at least $75k/year who doesn’t regret it and has better relationships now is an example of abandoning this problem you described. Surely being so super rich you’re emotionally impoverished it isn’t worth it or valuable to the guy at the top either... we’ve evolved over millions of years needing supportive relationships to survive, and probably ultimately need them more than abstractions like coin.

    "Your effort to remain what you are is what limits you" is such a great line to me, because it also can refer to the Nietzschean view that Christian morality is based on accepting the (probably unsatisfactory) state in which you are in.
    In order to progress, you must surpass who you were.

    • @forsakedsorrow
      @forsakedsorrow 7 років тому +13

      I personally believe this line also link to Buddhism idea of "all is empty", a part of it believes you can further your point of view when you realize you are not you, but a vessel. self identity is a anchor, it insures who you are, and stops you from becoming something else (for better or worse).

    • @forsakedsorrow
      @forsakedsorrow 7 років тому +6

      I believe what VytenisR1 was saying is that for there are no mutation in gene, which is a sudden and accidental break away from what the organism were, there won't be evolution; nationalism is a form of not willing to adapt and change from the original state of a country. and I believe you can apply similar logic the the rest of his list

      Felix Kovac the difference is, Nietzsche didn't believe in progress. Time isn't a line, but flat circle. But a lot of things Nietzsche learned from Hegel anyway, it's can't still be considered as synthesis of Schopenhauer and Hegel, but it's a thing very similar to.

      MymindisaMaze I had this same first impression. Many viewings later, with also watching the live action film, I feel that the original anime, while seemingly unbalanced and short, is also an ideal density of super awesome information packed into almost every minute of its running time.
      Also its incompleteness invites you to imagine forward for yourself.

      I highly recommend Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex, the original TV series (not the remake on Netflix).
      Personally I enjoyed it more than the film. It explores a lot more philosophical ideas and let's you be emersed in that world more.
      The only disclaimer I give is that if you watch the English dubbed version, be prepared to be a little annoyed by the voices of these robots known as tachkomas. You get used to them and they serve a deeper purpose in the story later.

    Pretty hard to apply Hegel to anything without over-simplifying majorly, but all things considered you did a pretty good job here. The one thing you messed up was the slave/master relationship, I think it would have been much easier to say that if the slave is doing the work set by the master, then, a relationship of inter-dependence eventually develops, wherein the master is not truly free. This mutual recognition of inter-dependence is where confrontation arises, and the sublation of it is the resolution of the conflict, into a new, more equitable relationship, or at the very least the destruction of the original relationship.

    Guys, congratulations for this excellent episode. My god, it's the most practicle and didatic explaining of Hegel's dialectic that i have ever seen. As a dialectical-materialist that i am, i've been studying Hegel's dialectics for a year now, in an attempt to reconstruct and fully comprehend Marx's line of thinking, and I can affirm, it's hard as hell to understand. You guys did a marvelous job putting his Dialectics in therms that a non experienced student can easily understand.

    you guys got this almost on the nail.. only problem is a few ideas... She knows she is not unique. Like at all. Its in your face how un-unique she is and how she feels she is. (many scenes show us that her body is not unique and is actually quite popular) ALSO! No section 6 is not the master over the puppet master. The puppet master is a slave to an organization/ government hybrid, note not section 9 section 9 is the organization on the outside investigating the actions of the puppet master. The puppet master is not merging with her for any other reason but to survive. He needs her as much as she will find out that she needs him. The mind is "limited" when compared to him but he needs her perspective to "evolve" and she needs his "unlimited" scope of mind and scale to widen her perspective.

      Major actually had a problem with her own identity, as she became unable to tell whether she is real or programmed, or at least scared at the prospect. This was started by the confrontation with both brainwashed victims of the Puppetmaster. But she clearly stated that what defines her as a person simply consists of collection of her memories - the scene after the diving. And she witnessed that it all can go away with ghost hacking.
      That is an identity crisis beyond our current understanding. Would i be myself wheni lose part of all my memories? Will I be myself when i gain new ones? The answer to those questions is actually "No", but we have still memory of the past which helps us to recognize string of events and recall our past "self". If those memories are lost?
      Yet at the beginning of the movie is indicated that she despite her work as a police officer, uses the connection to the network simpy to watch world around her. In 1995 it was just a science fiction, now almost everyone on the planet know what is and how to use internet, while some people are capable and willing to study absolutely everything in attempt to know themselves better.
      The Puppetmaster, even when a program, had similar purpose before he gained conscience, thats why it perceived Major as a "reflection". Now is it just a logical comparation, or an emotion? And is there actually a difference, as Project 2501 was still incomplete?
      Image of human being is in the GitS moved into the "Shell". This image is demonstrated to be "perishable" (or ever changing) without actual damage to the body. Image of a artifical being or artifical consciousness is manifested via Project 2501. Even when both concepts are still fictional, they are put on the same level as its said that what defined them are memories or information gathered over course of their existence.

      If philosophy does not remain true on the real world. What use we have for it?.
      The main issue whit his this ideas is that establishes values of superiority by arbitrary standards. thus making this whole thing a great exercise of futility and incomplete ideas. Now the real step to even accept any of this as remotely true is to evaluate his value system, by comparing to different scenarios.

    On the subject of synthesises and Naruto you would have been better off talking about Orochimaru since that's pretty much his whole chracter's schtick. His only goal is to arrive at discovering new ways to use the abilities available to him and he basically teams up with his own antithesis to find a new synthesis to defeat Madara.

    you said that Puppet Master lacked personal identity, while immediatly showing a line where he pointed to have sentience and self-consciousness (which entail personal identity, I think), and where (later in that same scene) he said that what he lacked were other biological features; specifically, reproductive capacities that would allow him/her to perfect itself through adaptation (or something like that). Nice video, though. Thanks

    • @joshnyce8642
      @joshnyce8642 7 років тому +3

      That's an interesting point! I didn't even think about how the fact that he has sentience and self-consciousness gives him an identity.
      Maybe even though the robot has sentience and self-consciousness... as a robot with programming, he is a determined being. And therefore, he may have an identity, but he does not have the ability to construct his _own_ identity. Merging with the major allows him to take on the experiences and unique desires of a free person. Thus, he is maybe made a more authentic being.

    • @franciscocastrorichter7316
      @franciscocastrorichter7316 7 років тому +1

      the problem with that reasoning is assuming that humans are not determined in similar ways to those programmed machines or robots are (after all, we are machines as well); it is also problematic and controversial in philosophy and science to assume that determinism is incompatible with free will (maybe it's not)

Instead of learning what made other better than us and taking that skill into ourselves we end up killing off those who threaten us so we don't have to change at all. There's no such thing as being better than someone else there's only a current status quo that makes us feel at ease.

      Harry Underwood Harry if neither of your opinion’s change about the truth value of any statement, can you find the root causes of your disagreements? Otherwise being stuck in a point of no change it’s not a real debate. Finding what amongst your opinions has in common with each other will allow you both to see what might be fundamental and what contingental out of your core arguments. The synthesis is not an entirely new form of knowledge obtained like arithmetic but rather a more tuned and multifaceted view on the subject of discussion that gives better understanding of the topics. The view expressed in this video is reductive, but it holds a facet of the pursuit of truth and meaning. Mistaking that you’ve achieved absolute truth and thus not listening to any possible change negates your possibility of understanding change. Also I still haven’t read more than a line of actual Hegelian writings and might return to this comment thread in a year or two after I’ve gathered the sufficient background to comprehend at least the prelude to the phenomenology of spirit. Will probably have a different view altogether, but will be curious to find the commonality between the new and the old
