Actually you can disable idle caching - Composition -> Preview -> Cache Frames When Idle. By disabling caching in secret menu you disable ALL caching, not just the idle one.

Sir, I have a question about rendering. I have purchased AfterCodecs for my PC. I face problems when I render my composition/video and share anybody on my mobile phone. It shows only a thumbnail rather than a preview. Could you please share the solution or render settings of After codecs with me?

Center Anchor Point in New Shape Layers, in the General prefs, is disabled by default. John, you didn't cover this option and had it turned on. (I have a special bias for this option because I instigated its creation. I'd like to argue for it to be on by default.)
Can you please make a video where you compare having disk cache enabled vs disabled, and see how it affects performance and normal AE usage, with info on the drive where you store the disk cache and details on its speed? It might be from different versions of After Effects over the years. For example maybe 2022 version of After Effects had 23GB, 2023 After Effects has 23GB, and so on...
Since last year, I have been facing a problem. When I transfer some of my footage from Premiere Pro to After Effects and do some motion graphics work in After Effects, and then save the project in After Effects and come back to Premiere Pro, it shows that the left part is being cut and blurred a little bit. Can you please tell me how I can fix this problem? The Premiere Pro and After Effects composition settings were both set to 1920 x 1080.

I experimented a little bit with this. Try holding down shift when clicking and don’t release from the shift key until the preferences window opens. Sometimes if I release the shift key too early, it won’t appear.
Theme color - cmd+f12 or cmd+cntrl+f12 does not bring up the console panel in my composition window. I have made sure that I am active in the composition window when I hit cmd+f12 and nothing happens other than my volume increasing. Am I missing something? is there another way to get to the console panel? Thanks for your help.
I believe that the only way to bring up the Console panel is by using the shortcut. But to see what shortcut to use to bring up the Console panel, you can check inside your keyboard shortcuts menu. Go up to Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts, then in the search bar search for console. If the shortcut isn’t cmd + f12, it will show the shortcut that will open it. Or if none is applied, then you can click next to where it says Show Console underneath the Shortcut column and assign a new custom shortcut for that command. Once you assign a new shortcut to it, click OK and you should now be able to use that new shortcut to open up the Console panel. ✌️
what about the script setting? I'm trying using Earth Navigator and it prompts for it.. however the check box for the script is not on the list in general for After Effects 2023.

How can AE's red dot render notification be turned off in Adobe's cloud. This irritating, unwelcome "look at me" addition to AE will not go away. I work on a Mac and have Notifications turned off in my Preference settings. Still this annoying thing pops up every time. :(
Hi there! Yeah, it can be annoying if you want to turn them off. What I found is that it needs to be turned off in two places. It needs to be turned off in preferences, and then when you add your comp to the render queue, there is a little checkbox at the bottom right corner that is named “Notify when queue completes”. This also needs to be turned off.
I need help with fps and frame rate. Every time I use roto brush 2.0 and having the new apple mac book I mind you. It’s dumb slow though? Any way I can change my frame rate to help speed up the problem so I can finish production
It sounds like something is slowing down your computer causing you to not be able to see your work in real time. I’d recommend cleaning your cache, allocating as much RAM as possible to After Effects. If there are any other applications open on your computer, I’d close those. If all else fails, you could try setting up proxies in your project. The only issue is that you may loose detail when applying the roto brush effect. What I’ve been doing lately for roto brush work is using RunwayML. Runway may be a great option for you as it doesn’t rely on your computer’s processing power. It sounds like another application is taking up all your RAM on your computer. Unless After Effects is taking up all your RAM. I'd check your activity monitor to see if anything else is weighing it down.

Hi there, Thanks! I’m glad you found my video useful! This setting can be changed in your system preferences. The option to change the color is located under the general settings, then next to appearance. I believe you have to be using macOS Mojave or later in order to switch it to dark mode. This will also make your Finder windows and theme colors dark gray.
You might have to let it render out first in order to preview it in realtime. Go to the Preview tab and click the play button. Once the composition plays all the way, you should see a green bar at the top of the timeline panel. This indicates that the frames in the composition are cached. You should now be able to click play and see the composition playback in realtime.
John I have found not everything appears in AE Preferences that you describe. For example, there is no Secret tab when I followed your instructions in my Preview (AE 2023). Also, Enable Home Screen does not appear in AE 2023. Strange. I'm working on a Mac.
Hi there, You are correct. After Effects changed there preferences menu since I made this video. For the secret menu, click and long hold on the shift key. Don’t let go of the shift key until the preferences menu appears. That should help you there. The Enable Home Screen button is in a new tab called Startup & Repair near the top. Hope this helps! ✌️
Im new in to AE and Im about to delete this program. Error:Cached Preview of negative time stretched layers is not supported. I have this massage every time when Im freeze framing my reversed clips. It could be a few things. First check to see if your camera layer is hidden inside the timeline panel. If it isn’t, check to see if your camera is being viewed in the composition panel. At the bottom right corner of the panel there are camera viewing options. Be sure your active camera is being shown. If there are multiple cameras in your composition, they may be interfering with each other.

Great info, but unfortunately the sluginesh of Ae goes way beyond the preferences and tricks. Sometimes it is on its knees only opening a simple project on a capable computer : it is then all about Ae version vs display driver version, the newest not always being the best. Thank you for this recap.
Hi, If After Effects isn’t recognizing all your installed RAM, it could mean a few things. You can first check to make sure that the memory stick is still working. Sometimes RAM stops working at the end of its life. Also, depending on the brand of RAM, the both sticks might not be able to be read by After Effects at the same time. You can also consider reinstalling After Effects.
Trying to make the interface bigger so I can see it. I guess there isn't a way. :( I made the text bigger but it didn't add height & size to timeline etc. Evidently designed by young people for young people.
No, the only current solution to this problem is employing a larger screen. In any event you raise a good point. By not providing a means to increase the scale of After Effects' UI, Adobe are effectively saying their products are primarily designed for consumers under sixty years. The truth is I imagination and creativity do not end at a given age. And the major motion graphic vendors know this full well, if only by the longevity of some of their senior product designers.

Now I know why my hard drive is so full. I had max 23gb but for some reason 204gb was in my disk cache?

Is your caps lock turned on?
Might sound weird, but having caps lock on sometimes interferes with the way After Effects can preview comps.

This might happen if you anchor point is off. I’d check the anchor point of your video footage layer before replacing it.

Is it possible to use it with 8 giga ram?
It won’t work if you have 8GB of RAM.
You’ll need at least 16GB in order to run After Effects.
Sorry, I misread Adobe’s instructions. 8GB is the bare minimum, but at least 16GB is recommended.
