In windows you can do all the Foss stuff if you really wanted to.

Your dead set right that when new users try and switch over it's
    1. "I can't run the programs I want",
    2. "I can't run the peripherals",
    3. "What distro do I choose?"
Number two is still an issue as some hardware may be visible and potentially work, but there's no Linux software to support it (like audio interfaces, remote controls etc)
Choosing a distro was a nightmare for me and a lot of trial and error. It took me 20 years to change over and it was only in the last 2yrs that I thought the desktop was up to par with what Windows was putting out. For all of the great things Linux could do, there were basic functions that didn't work depending on the DE (like re-sizing windows, file managers missing basic features, catastrophes after updates). It wasn't until I explored desktop environments and distros fully that you realise they're all different and all have their own issues. It's a matter of finding which one has the least amount of issues for your own use. I'm not going to sit there and use Alt-F8 and arrow keys to resize a f%$#ing window in a GUI just because you can't select an edge on a window! (yeah that was suggested in a Linux forum for it's short-coming).
In the next 10yrs, I also think you're on the money in that there will be a huge shift with people using phones and tablets for their needs. You're seeing the switch now. You can get external peripherals (much like for laptops) that will work with tablets via blue-tooth. They'll also get faster and more powerful and you won't need a bulky gaming laptop to take advantage of speed, storage and RAM. I also think voice commands will become more prominent. Nowadays, people will spend $1500 on a phone but bork at paying that for a laptop even though the laptop is more powerful.

The best hope for the Linux desktop is immutable distros like Open SuSE / Fedora Silverblue - it offers home users super stability, security and an acceptable form of rolling release for ‘normies’ The Gentoo, Slackware or Arch BTW types won’t like it, but those people live in silos and some should stay there.
CTT not my fave YTuber, but don’t lump him in with the eBuzz numptie LOL

You dare disagree with anything Lord Titus proclaims!? You've only been using Linux since. 1995. I've only been using it since 1999. Lord Titus just said he's been using it since 1809. He is the one true Linux authority. All hail Lord Titus!
Ugh. I know he was talking about build numbers. It was a joke. I'm glad he's back to using Windows. That's where he always should have stayed.

Look, Kent! Dont you get it? He has more experience than you and I combined. Together, we have some 49 years of experience under our belts when it comes to Linux usage. Lord Titus has been using it since somewhere around 1809.
Also, you have to give him credit for how great he looks at over 200 years old.

Windows is a tool, it allows me to play games in HDR, certain programs run better, I have zero issues with windows as a tool. It does what I want it to do. Linux desktop is great for privacy because you have the granular control of what's installed for the most part. They each have their place and use and depending on your use case you can live inside of either of them and not need the other. Linux and windows are tools at the base of their use.

In mid 2008 I had a good reasons to dual boot Windows Vista and Ubuntu 8.04 LTS on my 2GB new laptop (2x 1.8 GHz) with a 160 GB HDD with a throughput of ~45 MB/s. After 2 service packs and after changing the HDD to 320 GB on 80 MB/s, Vista became usable. However I had detected Sun's Virtualbox and I started to run Ubuntu 10.04 LTS as Host OS with good old Windows XP Home in a VM. Currently I still use a minimal install of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS as my Host OS and I use 4 Linux VMs and 2 Windows VMs (11 Pro and my 2010's XP Home) for my applications.

I have linux on my Windows machine as dual boot but my main one is mac. The software just isn't there for linux, and if you have to troubleshoot with linux as a casual user...... good luck

I will happen, it's just not something that happens a lot.
But if you ask Linux people, it's like every MS user want to be a Linux user :D

The last windows version I used was win 98. I have no need to use any windows version, but if others like it and find it useful then good for them.

"I'll build it myself for free" -- yea, that'd be what it's worth. He doesn't even know the stack he's criticizing, and assuming Linux is the solution.

i seen bluescreens at a Cumberlandfarms before i died laughing. I love that mentality where you think you know one thing about computers and you know it all. My friends see me like. I tell them i just know what I know from tinkering. I hate when they call themselves gurus basically what Chris is trying to be.
I love linux and only Linux I need is Debian aint gotta worry to much about it. like all operating systems the more we use it the more bullshit we find wrong with it.
maybe when im 60 years old Linux will be in the top 10 market share of operating systems. lolz

I can tell CTT has never worked in the field. 2D thinking about kiosks. I understand trying to give him some credit but there is no way a server admin doesn't know there are a thousand possible reasons that kiosk is down. Up to and including network issues. Most kiosks are connected to a VPN or IPsec tunnel pre OS boot. Let's not dare blame the ATT hop that's running Linux.
