Most of the gaming community enjoy modding and tinkering, for example the minecraft community like tinkering with shaders and mods.

I been gaming for 30 years and I can say it's not most, but some that do that. Most don't play modded games. And most games can't be modded.

Experimental should be the default Proton version for anyone using Steam on Linux. Anyway, Proton needs to be activated before use and choosing Experimental instead of a Proton version that does not receive any updates is not modding or tweaking. Proton is something that is constantly evolving and everyone should have Proton experimental chosen to use the latest changes. Updates are not tweaking. Custom kernel or Launch flags are tweaking.
CTT has made many tweaks in its Windows installation, as can be seen in previous videos. He should have made it clearer in this video.
The quality of his recording from Linux is incredibly poor and is not the case on my screen or others who have uploaded videos on UA-cam. At least not as bad as that.
Playing Windows games on Linux will always require some form of tweaking. The games are made with a Windows only API, which Linux does not understand without translating to OpenGL or Vulkan. I hope that flags, DLLs and shared State caches will be automatically be selected in the future on Linux. Hopefully more developers use Vulkan in new games, which provide better performance and native support on all platforms.
The point he wants to make is that the game runs at least as well as on Windows, which is pretty amazing since it is a Windows Game🙂 Just like Apex Legends, Arma 3, Witcher 3 ect. It's pretty awesome🙂
Hardcore gamers and casual gamers that don't want to tweak or learn a new system should use Windows. Proton is for people who don't want to dualboot and already use Linux to personalize their operating system for the best possible workflow (probably).

What I've come to realize is that if you have decided you want to play video games on your computer stay the hell away from linux. Dont listen to Linux cult guys telling you things have changed. Things have definitely got better but it's nowhere near the Windows experience.

I have been using linux for 8 months now, and while I'm still a baby, what he's doing is absolutely out of my skill set, I jumped through many hoops and I could not get many of my games to even work, mind you the fps gap is always lower than windows for me. So to say that what he's doing is not what everyone's doing is absolutely right!
And to add to the injury, the "tutorials" and "guides" that you find on the internet for what he's doing are so scarce, and most people really don't know what they are even doing. Just blindly tell you to add this and do this. And suddenly if you break your system you take the blame. People just don't want to deal with this shit, and I'm sadly not even one of them, but it still drives me crazy that I couldn't do what he did. It really takes a genius to customize the system like what he did. Sorry but most people are not IT professionals.

I honestly think that these cases where Linux gaming has better performance than Windows happens specifically on AMD GPUs simply because the AMD drivers on Windows are crap, rather than "Linux being better for gaming". Nowadays Elden Ring performs much better in Windows on AMD, and even at the time that he uploaded that video, on Nvidia it would run significantly faster on Windows compared to Linux. UA-camrs like Titus Tech will always get these edge cases and try to print it as the rule to get views and convince people of crazy things that are not real.

I spent too time preparing my machine to play games on Linux. I live in a part of the world where internet has a lot of restrictions, lutris won’t fucking work since it can’t pull tons of things off of GitHub. Same goes for other things. I guess if I had a free, unrestricted internet I might have had a better experience. Linux is good for work for me, but not for gaming, plus good luck doing things like overclocking or programs like GeForce experience. I know they’re not that useful but Linux doesn’t have many of the quality of life programs Windows comes with.
Linux can play games and sometimes runs them really well but sometimes things just break.

Personally my career in IT was pretty much thanks to my interest in gaming and perusing it in various ways. In the early days, dos and 3.11, you needed to know some stuff to get gaming to work. I learned C/C++ to make games (I've made some bots & various analysis programs). I learned basic networking initially thanks to games. So not all of us are lazy when it comes to gaming. And hell, in modern days what lengths people go to mod games is sometimes actually insane.

This was a good thing to geek out on and I appreciate that you didn't swear so much today. Maybe it's because you're a Chris Titus fan too. It's a hard day to be competing for UA-cam attention with Johnny Depp and Amber Heard and Mr Rottenborn going on over at the other channels, but you got me somehow. Anyway... Gaming is not a topic I really know anything about and the last time I took any kind of gaming half seriously the Commodore 64 was the thing. However, as a big CTT fan, the one thing I'm really curious about watching this video is... How do you think Chris Titus would react to this? Do you think he'd agree with you on most of your points in that he's gone out of his way to customize things and hasn't done it on Windows? Regardless of what he says in his video, I would expect that Chris Titus probably can't help himself and would just go crazy customizing whatever he's on, regardless of whether it's Windows or Linux. I didn't watch the video that carefully, but I got the impression that he's just saying that Linux can be very good for gaming in some isolated cases. Chris Titus loves Linux and wants to promote it and make people more interested in the possibility of gaming on Linux, so it seems pretty understandable. I was under the impression that overall Chris Titus basically recommends Windows for gaming. Any thoughts?

I will not say i am a ctt fan, he knows his windows, but when it comes to linux he falls a bit short and make to many assumptions, and that sometimes make him favor linux in ways i feel he should not and over sell linux, and that can be bad as it sets the expectations to high for new users and then they get frustrated and leave :O and he is not to good at fact checking what he say. so i am a bit 50/50 with him lol. i listen when he talk windows, And have no idea if he would agree or not, and i honestly dont care, this is more of a addition to the video explaining some points i feel he fall flat on.

In fact, selecting Proton Experimental is the only thing that you need to do to have better Elden Ring gaming experience than Windows, and it is a official option in Steam by default, you don't need to download anything or change anything, so you don't need to TWEAK anything. How long haven't you used Steam? With the latest MESA driver, the performance improves a lot, and he will get a much much better result than the video he made.
By the way, he isn't using stock Windows, he has already modified it.
He has mentioned that he changed the color on Windows, so it looks different.

By the way, it's not because of the upscaling to make it run better on Linux, it's because the game developers lack experience on developing DX12 games, and Proton accidentally helps them.

    • @KentsTechWorld
      @KentsTechWorld  2 роки тому +1

Yeah seam like you did not understand what I was saying, I said it looked like it was upscaled cos of the lack if detail, I did not say it was. And render a game in lower resolution and upscaling it will make it run better as you not taxing the system as much as native resolution, but again as I said I don't know if it is upscaled or if there is some other reason fro the lack of detail. The fact is the game look better on Windows from what he is showing, and he also said he had tweaked linux to run better, so that is again not a stock install like windows is

So youtube are only messing with one half of a video then??

So OBS under linux is making a worse recording than under Windows??
(If the case he again fucked up, and should make sure the software he use give you the most correct picture of what is going on, or else how can we make a informed opinion other than "Trust me bro")
What you are doing is make excuses and some really bad once sadly.
If we going with the "trust me bro" then i been gaming on linux since the 90's and ever since the first version of proton, and i can say from my experience, Linux are years behind when it comes to gaming Vs Windows from a how good it looks, how well MOST games run and so on.
Are there a FEW games that run better under Linux? YUP but a few don't make it the norm, if so every human would be a strongman, or a pro NFL player ;)

Well, well, well long time ago, when the latest OpenSUSE was number 10, or 12, but for sure those numbers, my demo of Gumboy Adventures actually played with a higher frame rate through the current then Wine, than on Windows XP. I shit non of you not! Find the old software, and compare for yourselves. OpenSUSE rocks, but again, whenever the simplest problem needs fixing, it's like with every Linux distro. Alsonyou dont need to tinker on Winblows ,it runs native. Winblows has so much malware and shit build in no matter how much you tweak the spyware gonna tank frames. Yh he should have closed his background tabs. The shaprpness is probably based on protons tweak or gamescape scaling it down. Obviously Its tweaked it doesnt run native.
