Open source = collaboration and standardization.
No one company is responsible for all of the internet.

As soon you leave your mother's basement, because you have a pregnant wife, your Open Source career is over. Worst case you work for Google or Mac, best case you work for IBM/Red Hat or Canonical. Open Source is a great way for companies to maximize profits by sharing development and maintenance costs :) :)

I know, it's really terrible how capitalism totally destroys everything beautiful, thoughts included.
"back in the day, people were not thinking about licenses". Exactly, because capitalism greedy hands had not yet destroyed it.
I know people will call me stupid, or living in a basement, but that is not it. I am thinking of development. And research clearly indicate that capitalism IS going to break, NOBODY has ever managed to produce a model that works for eternity, most models shows it should already be broken (IMHO it IS looking at the inequality of wealth distribution in the world), but that is also being silenced by the same capitalistic machinery, and this whole video is proof of that.
You are not wrong, but the scary part is that most people completely naturally plays into the hands, coming up with "defencive points" or "pointing out the reality" of a system that will be the end of civilization as we know it unless we move on to phase 2 in humanity.
    Scary stuff...
One thing you ARE incorrect in is the security part.
It is VERY proven to be safer using open source.
While for example windows 10 home edition had a freaking backdoor for years, KNOWN by the cia might I add (maybe even kept alive, who knows), and ONLY got detected because of a whistle blower!! Are we just ignoring stuff like that? How do we know how safe this closed source software is TODAY?!? "...gets fixed right way...." my a**...
And then we have PROOF of how things gets stopped like in the very recent XZ ATTEMPT by a state hacker.
DO NOT lie about important stuff like that!

I think one -if not the biggest- advantage of open source especially in these times is the ability to confirm how the software deals with your data. And taking the producer's word for it is surely not the answer as Google and many more have shown us.

in away I agree. not everything has to be open source. we need both proprietary and open source. me for Example... I won't like a lot of people gaining access to the code I made for a web browser, so they can screw up and make it malicious. I'm not saying it always happens, but it could... also I need to put food on my table (donations don't work all the time) but like a open source tool, or something small sure no problem! VCL it's pretty good, but... I feel it could be even better if a huge team getting paid is involved. I know Linux guys will hate me from this.. but Open source only it's a bad idea

@@j.r.r.tolkien8724 why people care enough to say that statement - is because its the other side thats driving a bulls**t narrative.
You use software to solve problems. Be it calculator and math problems, or call of duty and your passtime/frustration/doing what you like.
What does the code being available to public have anything to do with that?
Besides i don't get the logic in the first place. Do you audit the code? Do experts have eyes on the code? Because if experts indeed did, they'd be charging for doing that. Instead, its much easier to say you have or someone else has eyes on the code than doing it yourself, i.e. what linux "youtubers" always say. Do you think anyone sensible enough wants to waste their time because privacy? I use android because my apps work, not because somehow i have respect for google for stealing more data from android users than microsoft ever will on windows.
That's the point. I'm not against open source, but I'm not for open source either. Sometimes one works much better than the other, such as a password manager. Other times, such as a game, what do you have on open source by comparison?

As a developer, I've had so many other developers look at me like I am crazy for developing using Windows and occasionally on Mac. They always tell me "Linux is the best for development.". To which my reply is..." I like my Visual Studio". I hate vim and can't be assed to learn an environment that forces me to think and act a certain way to be proficient with it. Are there some cool things that can be done with Vim? Sure, and some of those shortcuts, i've added to my IDE (Jetbrains and Visual Studio) with some configuration. I also like using a mouse as it feels the most natural to me to be able to use the keyboard and mouse for things. When i'm thinking while writing code, I will scroll and look at other code i've written to determine what I want to do.
Basically, the biggest issue with Open Source besides little to no money in it are the sycophants that pretend like they are superior to you for using open source products.
