I've noticed some attacks are missing from phase 3 like for example when he holds his sword above his head, inflicts a standard slice attack then follows up with a close "dangerous" attack, both can easily be dodged on the left. He sometimes does a swipe attack, steps back, runs around and do another one, all mixed up with some combo. Phase 3 is very diverse and looks less choregraphed than phases 1, 2 and 4. On phase 4, I've also found helpful at some point to be as far as possible and spend every spirit emblem by spamming him with spinning shurikens which took down a good chunk of his health since he tried to cover back the distance without blocking half the time and depleted his posture significantly.

Anyone and everyone still having problems to counter perelious attacks.. simply press the appropriate key when the red symbol above your head starts to fade..during thrusts press mikiri counter button when the red kanji symbol starts to disappear, same with sweep attacks...jump when the red symbol fades. With this u can avoid sweep attacks without even looking at the bosses.. Hope this helps
for isshin 2nd phase 360 long range spear attack (8:22) there's actually 3 way for you to deal with it, first like you see in this video, stay away when he's ready to pull that attack, 2nd if you're greedy like me & happened to give him a hit or 2 when he's ready to pull that attack & you don't have enough time to back off, or you managed to back off a bit but still in his attack range, you can just deflect it, but it has to be a perfect deflect, if you miss timing & block it you'll still receive some damage, 3rd way if you're crazy greedy also just like me, you just need to jump over him the exact moment when that attack land, your timing also has to be perfect when execute this move, if not well get ready to receive full damage of that attack ps : 4 actually, I actually never done it when I fought him before but I heard that you can use firecracker when he's about to do that move, fully cancel it
firecracker is probably the smartest. I goomba stomp on his head which is fairly reliable, but you do have to make sure you're standing in front of him, and LET GO of the control stick. any directional input, even forward, can fuck it up. You also have to jump a bit early, like maybe a second to half a second before the attack comes out.
This is excellent work all around. Most of the time, I just watch my own tape, but this is the sort of guide folks should turn to if they want to learn this fight.
Phase 1: make distance to bait mirakiri counter. You can followup with ichimonji double. But deflect or block immediately Phase 2: weapon thrust/charge & 2x doge (get behind hem from the left) then whirlwind slash when he does his thrust atk, charge thrust again Phase 3&4: dodge to the right when boss does his jump spear slam, then from behind boss do mortal draw 2x, make distance to bait the slam again. I use this strategy, it’s high risk, high reward and if you’ve perfected it by practicing, it’s faster. Besides that you always have the option to use items to enhance you atk and posture
I like that you show mistakes. If you don’t see how to mess up you don’t see as easily how to do it correctly. I rewatched my failures and could see exactly what I was doing wrong. I would share that with friends and it helps. Videos that show the attack’s multiple times also help. If you just see someone quickly slash through it, when you get to that state it’s you not a video. I personally would like some help. I have little free time and want to defeat this bastard.
Great guide! This boss on PC is nightmare, took me 100 tries to finally beat him - I found the Mikiri counter is highly unreliable for me, seems I am often 1 frame too early or late I'd ended up with a suicide attempt. On the 360 sweep I have better counter/punish, though - I usually stay still for about 1 second right beside him when he start doing that, then jump on top of his head and slash like you typically counter other non-blockable sweep attacks, it is pretty safe and deal more vitality and posture damage. Also if I dash toward him right when he starts jumping at me, then turn around as his hit lands, his back would be exposed for a couple good and safe hits.
Honestly getting him to spam his spear slam followed by the four gun shots you can use the umbrella to punish him everytime. I think it took me 6 tries to beat him with the umbrella. It works quite well. It also mitigates him using his lightning if you're not good at lightning reversal.
I’m going to try this tactic next! I’ve tried a few other but I’ve failed so many times! Never gotten him to the third stage :( but I can feel it his time is up my time is now!
Really nice guide! Managed to beat him on 1st playthrough without this guide (almost smashing my controller into pieces doing so though), but now I'm on NG+ and I think you just saved me buying a new controller. Good work man!
@@SweetJohnnyCage you help a lot realy friend , i whatched other videos "cheeseing" the boss , and for me dosnt work that method , iam realy glad that i made it head to head whit the boss...thanks one more time m8
Pretty much a good step by step guide. Still having difficulty by comparison. Its either the NG+ or the 1.04 patch. Isshin's crap is being just too OP in his second stage
@@SweetJohnnyCage I think it's an edge case either way. You can see that the lightning didn't touch him at the end of the animation, so I still think it's because you weren't in range (by a very slight bit) I think it's because of the slight step back, combined with his backwards momentum after getting of course, though that always happens as far as I know. The slant might've contributed slightly to the distance, but I do think it's because you were out of range, not because it hit below him (you generally swipe into the ground, even when you do hit him)
Wrong the best way to deal with genechiros first combo is to either use the mortal blade skill or double ichimonji immediately (do not charge). This will do good vitality and posture damage from the very beginning while also interrupting his animation.
@@MattZelda sure. Love it. I 've been abusing of it the whole fight, isshin katana phase after every mikiri or dodge when he does it too. I can get rid of second phase very fast using it. After he pulls out the spear, I only ichimonji once instead of double because of the high risks of beeing counter or hit back. Really like the icbimonji in this game. Best combat arts in my opinion. A bit slow but so cool and powerful. 👍
Well, you have a flamethrower on a mechanical arm and there are monks that use homing bombs, not to mention all the magical shit in this game. Not hard to believe that the final boss has an automatic gun...
howie lowis yea but all of those are mechanical inventions (or mildly steampunk) which still makes sense with or without magic. Isshin’s gun if you look close enough is just a regular muzzle loaded flintlock pistol. It can shoot magical glowing butterfly bullets for all I care but the moment where he spams it, it sounds like a WWII semi-auto pistol to me.
You don't need to dodge his huge spear slash in phase 2, time it just right and you can jump over it and then do a jump off him with the second one. If you also hold block while jumping in phase 3 to return the way of tomoe slash you'll take no damage. It also works when you fight genechiro.
@@SweetJohnnyCage yes, I mention this. I'm just saying you can block when you jump to not take the small amount of damage you get from having to do the lightening strike back.
After multiple losses that I have taken against him I started testing what would work and what didnt. Sabimaru doesnt do a damn thing against him either. It will proc and almost instantly drop from him.
You played since the last update? They’ve really polished it, much harder to bait attacks now, and you can’t interrupt the second phase. It’s honestly one of the best last bosses in any game ever. Just beat him with no kuro’s charm, and it was so much more fun to play, because you have to learn the moves. I straight up destroyed him in the end, after around 20 defeats.
Why does every guide ignore the fact that you can just walk behind Genichiro's first mortal slash, hit him like 3 times, then side step his second mortal blade slash, and hit him like 2 more for a total of 5 starting hits?
PPPLLLLEEEAAAAAZZZZZZZ I need help! I think I've played this boss seriously 75 times @ this point and I CANNOT get past the 3rd spear phase...It's driving me CRAZY!!!
Since there's no online in this game, I can't really help other than saying take your time and learn all the attacks. He's quite easy once you calm down and recognize which moves are coming.
yes, i want to beat him like this, there is no fun running around hit him occasionally and kill him with health rather than posture damage, Defeating him by posture damage is really something of worth. Best tutorial
I'm never one to dump on anyone for taking an easy way out, but I wholeheartedly agree. This game was designed around its combat and should be played as such.
I tried but i swear half the time my block wouldnt register so i played nascar instead. Then again the fps on xbox s is so bad that could be the culprit..oh well at least I got him. Also i wouldnt say it was much easier by any means
@@SweetJohnnyCage thanks bro I finally defeated him the way I wanted by responding to almost all his attacks , I had to learn a lot before amazing win and I watched your video again n again and thanks for the slow motion to understand his moves :)
Amazing video but after the last patch, now he doesn't do a single lighting strike in the third phase, at least he didn't do any to me, but I passed his second phase thanx to your technic in the second try, your technic is the absolute best but the third one finished me, which attack power did you have?
@@SweetJohnnyCage, thank you, you should defenetely have much more subscribers cos I watched two other guys and I couldn't do their technics as they were way more complex and longer, your one, however, was way much simpler and faster, just parrying and miriki counter, that was really incredible, 😮, 👏, though for the first phase I used the shadow rush cos I found it even easier.
@@SweetJohnnyCage, defenetely after a few tries in the third phase now he doesn't jump and throws any lightning leaving you time to jump and throw it back, instead he jumps with the spear and does a huge electrified slash attak which you can't parry and another one across, they made it even much harder now than it was, this is already smelling like piss taking honestly.
When recording does AV actually capture HDR with post editing ? If I force my display into HDR mode I can see a good difference in your video, comparing to HDR off, also what's the size of the capture ? I used the Elgato 4k card, FPS and resolution was perfect, but the color gamma was simply broken. Regardless if I recorded with Elgato 4k or the external 1080p one, my gamma/color was just bad. It looks over saturated and washed out. So I refunded the card, just kept the external one. I tried both OBS and elgato's software, no way to fix the color palette, due to playing in HDR the recording was horrible, now thinking to buy the one you used. Eventually gave up and just using the ps4 pro to record.
Yes, the AVerMedia Live Gamer 4k records natively in HDR. No need to mess with any colors, just turn HDR on in your system settings and go to town. You can import the footage into Adobe Premiere no problem, and then enable HDR when exporting. The settings are in the video description. The capture size is very large. It's basically 1gb per minute on average. I use a 4TB drive for my capture.
@@SweetJohnnyCage Figures, hmm total processing time for 1 video of 60 minutes ? I am just worried people won't have enough bandwidth to view it in 4k, all in all is it worth it ? my videos are only for me more or less, I just use youtube as HDD, I am using SSHD for storage and upload and recording, which makes things a bit faster. Thank you for taking the time to reply. I am just not sure its worth the investment now especially after refunding the Elgato 4k card which costs like 4 Aver's or 3 at least in CA, but your vids are vastly superior to what I recorded in 4k all in all seems Aver wins this one Elgato.
If you're asking how long it takes to render an edited 4k HDR video, the answer is forever. I have to render everything overnight. It's comical how long it takes, and my machine is a bit of a beast. I built it to handle 4k HDR and it barely does haha. But I like the way it comes out. The cool thing is that on UA-cam, HDR is only available on devices that support it. So if someone is just using an iPhone or whatever, they'll just see a regular non-HDR video and it doesn't use any more bandwidth than normal. It's only when someone has the ability to view HDR content that it becomes available to them. The way I look at it is that I'm providing another quality option to people, while also making a crystal clear 1080p option available to everyone else.
If you're talking about doing a Mikiri Counter, this happens to me too sometimes. I think the game saves your momentum for a few extra frames after you stop moving. I could be wrong though.
It happened to me today while fighting Isshin for the Shura ending. I think it has to do with your position on the terrain. If you're at anything but a straight up stance, you'll dodge instead of counter.
Excellent guide! I start fighting Isshin yesterday and after 1 hour of failing attempt I decided to take a break and take some help on youbute. Watched different videos and your guide is the best. Today I´ll try it again. I´m confident now, the guy is beatable. I have a question, which prosthetic tool do you suggest to help the fight? Which one works better in your opinion? I´ve watched different strategies like Oil+flame or Subimaru or Firecrackers
I'm glad you like the guide! I actually hardly ever use prosthetics. I just always forget about them hahaha. Mist Raven is always helpful and I've incorporated it into a fight or two. Shuikens are good as well to help close the gap. I wish I had better advice for prosthetics, sorry.
@@SweetJohnnyCage No problem, I like the mind set to go in there and use your sword and skills only. I´ll try to use some prosthetics when I manage to reach the third phase. Wish me luck!
Thanks very much! I really like editing with it now that the technology has caught up for capture cards. I always hated having to play games on my PS4 Pro in 1080p just to make content. Now I can do everything in full quality :)
I'm glad you liked the editing style! I'd like to do more of this type of thing in the future. I'm ashamed to say that I never upgraded my prosthetics except for level 2 firecrackers and shurikens. I never had enough money on me to spend on the upgrades, so I never used them outside of Mist Raven in one fight. That said, Mist Raven is incredible in general and can get you out of a ton of bad situations. The shield might be effective in this fight, but disengaging from the boss can cause him to steamroll you, so I don't really recommend it.
@@SweetJohnnyCage thanks for the answer ;) I'm more or less in the same situation, never found the need nor the crazy amount of money required to update the prosthetic :s And think this fight works better with a sword only ;) might eventually try some Combat Arts in P2 maybe, but even then ... Well, that's long enough ! GLHF for your next projects !
Fireworks work great, Sabimaru can poison him after a complete combo, and the umbrella can absorb the gun shots and then be sent back him for damage if you have the ... force skill unlocked. Don't remember the full name.
@@vallau-lifoux8031 really late. But ignoring genichiro, fire raven(phase 1 and 2) + mist raven(phase 3 lightning) with fang and blade completely obliterates Isshin. Did my first playthrough with demon bell. Just make sure you teleport vertically(no direction held when using raven). The downward slash(fang and blade) from a vertical teleport is stronger than the full charge 1st hit of ichimonji.
Fact: if you can catch the lightning and throw it back at him, you can win the final stage, if not, forget the boss. I tried 10 hours total until I got it. No chance without it. After I have mastered it, it was easy as cake. If you get shot, then he shots at you consecutively, and dead.
You can run around him while he's charging the lightning attack and avoid it completely. But catching it is simple enough, just have to not panic and take your time.
can you make a guide on that demon freak please , i tried to defeat him but i was like wtf is even happening he killed me in less than 40s 3 times i couldn't make a single read on any of moves , and i totally hate huge bosses . also this guide helped me get isshin my 3rd try so thanks .
A lot of what you're seeing has been patched out. 2nd phase isshin cannot be delayed. Spear comes out his ass ASAP. He also automatically creates distance after his jumping overhead slam in phase 2. The animation was changed so you can't get damage off even with a perfect parry. Also, the window for deflecting shock in phase 3 is reduced drastically after NG too. Kinda messed up that FS patches games to increase difficulty but it is what it is. Sharing my headaches so others can avoid this patched bullshit
SolidBerSerKer2 Just dodge to the left or right at the last minute before he swings down. Very similar the the owl downward slash. Don’t dodge too early.
If you're watching the video on an HDR display, it shouldn't. But if you watch it on a non-HDR display, UA-cam resamples it to remove the HDR, which doesn't always turn out as good as it could.

You can get a few swings in before the first initial arc slash as you called it. Then while in his face dash to the right.
for isshin 2nd phase 360 long range spear attack (8:22) there's actually 3 way for you to deal with it, first like you see in this video, stay away when he's ready to pull that attack, 2nd if you're greedy like me & happened to give him a hit or 2 when he's ready to pull that attack & you don't have enough time to back off, or you managed to back off a bit but still in his attack range, you can just deflect it, but it has to be a perfect deflect, if you miss timing & block it you'll still receive some damage, 3rd way if you're crazy greedy also just like me, you just need to jump over him the exact moment when that attack land, your timing also has to be perfect when execute this move, if not well get ready to receive full damage of that attack
ps : 4 actually, I actually never done it when I fought him before but I heard that you can use firecracker when he's about to do that move, fully cancel it
firecracker is probably the smartest.
And I'm already subscribed.
Not really. It gets a lot of stuff wrong about both individual attacks and how you should go about the fight period.
Phase 1: make distance to bait mirakiri counter. You can followup with ichimonji double. But deflect or block immediately
Phase 2: weapon thrust/charge & 2x doge (get behind hem from the left) then whirlwind slash when he does his thrust atk, charge thrust again
Phase 3&4: dodge to the right when boss does his jump spear slam, then from behind boss do mortal draw 2x, make distance to bait the slam again.
I use this strategy, it’s high risk, high reward and if you’ve perfected it by practicing, it’s faster. Besides that you always have the option to use items to enhance you atk and posture
A year later I got this game
and im currently stuck on him
im stuck on owl father at hirata estate
I m also stuck at ishin
@@30yeargamer do you have fire umbrella?
Glad you like the guide! I've seen some others doing what you did with getting his back exposed. Definitely works!
This fight is just a pain makes you dizzy as fuck running in circles
Great guide friend , works for me very fine!!!
I'm glad it helped!
@@SweetJohnnyCage you help a lot realy friend , i whatched other videos "cheeseing" the boss , and for me dosnt work that method , iam realy glad that i made it head to head whit the boss...thanks one more time m8
good job thanks great blog and about the wind move u should use the umbrella to absorb the hit
Better solution for the whirlwind is too jump on his head because it does posture and on your way down you can hit him 2-3 times
It's really hard to time that jump
Nice video mate, subscribed. Keep it up. I'll be using this guide for my charmless ng3 run...
Pretty much a good step by step guide. Still having difficulty by comparison. Its either the NG+ or the 1.04 patch. Isshin's crap is being just too OP in his second stage
Thank you. finally beat him after watching this
the lightning didn't miss because of terrain height, it missed because you jumped back and he was out of range of your lightning sweep.
That is true for the second to last one, you're right. But on the last lightning at 16:52, I just jump straight up from a standing position.
@@SweetJohnnyCage I think it's an edge case either way. You can see that the lightning didn't touch him at the end of the animation, so I still think it's because you weren't in range (by a very slight bit)
I think it's because of the slight step back, combined with his backwards momentum after getting of course, though that always happens as far as I know.
Really good video I believe it helped a lot of people (not me I already finished the game a long time ago)
Double Ichimoji interupts his mortal blade attack.
And sounds like the best option to open the fight
@@crocussativus4671 pretty much is. Does decent vit and pos damage
@@crocussativus4671 Good shit. I've been fighting this fucker for at least 10 hours and his second phase still rekts my ass every time.
Excellent quality :)
Don't get how Isshin has a semi automatic gun in feudal Japan...
Time is convoluted in Sengoku Japan...
it's mildly steampunk what with your robot arm and everything
Well, you have a flamethrower on a mechanical arm and there are monks that use homing bombs, not to mention all the magical shit in this game.
Not hard to believe that the final boss has an automatic gun...
@@howielowis458 Plus the final boss literally comes out of the other final boss.
howie lowis yea but all of those are mechanical inventions (or mildly steampunk) which still makes sense with or without magic. Isshin’s gun if you look close enough is just a regular muzzle loaded flintlock pistol. It can shoot magical glowing butterfly bullets for all I care but the moment where he spams it, it sounds like a WWII semi-auto pistol to me.
thanks man. Finally, I defeated the final boss only thanks to your strategy
Best Sekiro vid I’ve seen. Great work, my man. Subbed.
Thanks very much!
Just beat sword saint! Your vid def helped.
You don't need to dodge his huge spear slash in phase 2, time it just right and you can jump over it and then do a jump off him with the second one. If you also hold block while jumping in phase 3 to return the way of tomoe slash you'll take no damage. It also works when you fight genechiro.
Holding it won’t help you, you have to time the deflection and then press lightning. Most people just use mist raven into the reversal.
You actually just have to jump, get hit by lightning while in the air, and then swing your sword before touching the ground. No need to block.
@@SweetJohnnyCage yes, I mention this. I'm just saying you can block when you jump to not take the small amount of damage you get from having to do the lightening strike back.
@@notalive_zombie ahhhh gotcha. i didnt know if that actually made a difference. thanks!
After multiple losses that I have taken against him I started testing what would work and what didnt. Sabimaru doesnt do a damn thing against him either. It will proc and almost instantly drop from him.
Best guide so far.
Thanks very much!
Woo finally got him to third phase. His quick thurst miriki counters are so hard to time in phase 2. Any tips?
Why does every guide ignore the fact that you can just walk behind Genichiro's first mortal slash, hit him like 3 times, then side step his second mortal blade slash, and hit him like 2 more for a total of 5 starting hits?
1:27 Because apparently you're deaf.
2:06 Uh what the hell? That spin move is blockable and should be deflected. Where did you get the idea that it was unblockable?
PPPLLLLEEEAAAAAZZZZZZZ I need help! I think I've played this boss seriously 75 times @ this point and I CANNOT get past the 3rd spear phase...It's driving me CRAZY!!!
Since there's no online in this game, I can't really help other than saying take your time and learn all the attacks. He's quite easy once you calm down and recognize which moves are coming.

@@SweetJohnnyCage Haha, coming back to Sekiro and watching your vid again for NG+3 (went for Shura on NG+ because I'm trying to get platinum)
Nice work. Very helpful.

It is really hard every time i say this the worst boos the game told me u r wrong 😭😭
But thx for ur efforts ❤️
why is the 4khdr icon at top right kinda familiar..?
oh
It's just a stock image used on TV boxes and other stuff
yes, i want to beat him like this, there is no fun running around hit him occasionally and kill him with health rather than posture damage, Defeating him by posture damage is really something of worth.
@@TheMohansikka Congrats!!!
thanks man that was very helpful.
Amazing video but after the last patch, now he doesn't do a single lighting strike in the third phase, at least he didn't do any to me, but I passed his second phase thanx to your technic in the second try, your technic is the absolute best but the third one finished me, which attack power did you have?
Wtf really? That sounds bizarre and like a bug. I've had bosses stop using mechanics before.
That said, I'm really glad you found my guide helpful!
Is it me or when every time I try to counter, he moves left or right instead of straight ahead
If you're talking about doing a Mikiri Counter, this happens to me too sometimes. I think the game saves your momentum for a few extra frames after you stop moving. I could be wrong though.
@@SweetJohnnyCage yeah. It gets annoying, but at least you get two free hits
It happened to me today while fighting Isshin for the Shura ending. I think it has to do with your position on the terrain. If you're at anything but a straight up stance, you'll dodge instead of counter.
@@SweetJohnnyCage the best thing I did was to wait for him to attack and not move, then mikiri counter
Love the 4k HDR
Thanks very much! I really like editing with it now that the technology has caught up for capture cards. I always hated having to play games on my PS4 Pro in 1080p just to make content. Now I can do everything in full quality :)
Very good guide 👍
Thanks! I hope it helped :)
coming back to this 3 years later, and it's upsetting Fromsoft pretty much peaked with this boss and has for the most part gone downhill since.
Thanks for the tips, the video was perfectly edited too ;)
I was wondering, is there any prosthetic you'd recommend for that fight ?
He seems to do a big combo to me in his 3rd phase at least 6 or 7 hits. I have yet to get him into the 4th phase. first 2 i have down pat though.
Make sure you mikiri counter him. Isshin Ashina is pretty bad too. You fight him when you join owl.
back off and heal during his combo, then try to mikiri the stab
Fact: if you can catch the lightning and throw it back at him, you can win the final stage, if not, forget the boss. I tried 10 hours total until I got it. No chance without it. After I have mastered it, it was easy as cake. If you get shot, then he shots at you consecutively, and dead.
You can run around him while he's charging the lightning attack and avoid it completely. But catching it is simple enough, just have to not panic and take your time.
@@SweetJohnnyCage true, not to panic is the key.
Or the mortal blade just run up and high monk. Completely stops the attack
Isshin having a hard time with night star slash reversal.. 😊
can you make a guide on that demon freak please , i tried to defeat him but i was like wtf is even happening he killed me in less than 40s 3 times i couldn't make a single read on any of moves , and i totally hate huge bosses . also this guide helped me get isshin my 3rd try so thanks .
It's uploading :)
Genichiro I just jump on head mortal draw so that 3 times and he’s gone
A lot of what you're seeing has been patched out. 2nd phase isshin cannot be delayed. Spear comes out his ass ASAP. He also automatically creates distance after his jumping overhead slam in phase 2. The animation was changed so you can't get damage off even with a perfect parry. Also, the window for deflecting shock in phase 3 is reduced drastically after NG too. Kinda messed up that FS patches games to increase difficulty but it is what it is. Sharing my headaches so others can avoid this patched bullshit
ih isshins first phase you forgot to talk about eh double ichimonji the moue i cant parry or avoid ...
SolidBerSerKer2 Just dodge to the left or right at the last minute before he swings down. Very similar the the owl downward slash. Don’t dodge too early.
@ SweetJohnnyCage I've been on this guy for like a week and if I die I have notice he starts to fight different.
If youre far away he'll do the slam and slash more. If youre close well you get this stuff.
Use the shadow rush ability with mkiri counter will be easier
bro why HDR dulls the details and colors
If you're watching the video on an HDR display, it shouldn't. But if you watch it on a non-HDR display, UA-cam resamples it to remove the HDR, which doesn't always turn out as good as it could.
