Love the reaction to the first hearing of a song I've heard a thousand times, trust me lads, listen a few times and it becomes epic. It's not a song in the usual format of verse, chorus/verse, chorus etc, maybe that's what puzzed them at the end as to whether they 'liked' it.
"Yeah, he gettin' busy!" "That's hot!" -- I don't think I've ever heard anyone say that while listening to Iron Maiden, haha. I love these reaction videos and the fact you're so open-minded about types of music you would never usually listen to.
@@laurie5925 I saw them in the 80s on Powerslave and Somewhere in time. Then 5 or 6 more times. Jones Beach, and I also saw them in Brooklyn, Newark, and most recently in Hartford this past summer. Saw them in Holmdel on the Somewhere Back in time tour. That was a very memorable show! Rare no pit show and I had 4th row center. In the fan club too. Totally worth it for the presales alone!
I came back to rewatch this video months later after seeing a couple of the commentators say they think this was a negative reaction. This was anything but a negative reaction - certainly, it brought out the philosophical side in George and Ryan, and they definitely seemed to appreciate the poetry, skill, musicianship, songwriting, and artistry that went into the song, and found the whole to be beautiful, with the worst they could say about it being that it might be a bit dated, the subject matter not being not being to their taste at the time, and the song being something that might have to grow on them. I didn't realize it until I saw the reaction the first time, but Harris' lyrics, whether the song was contrived that way or not (I suspect not), actually do an excellent job of conveying the false courage and then all of the stages of grief the story's character would go through in the hours before death - you see elements of shock and panic, denial, anger, bargaining/reasoning, and depression in the way the character's words contradict what was said before, before settling on acceptance, before the character's life flashes before his eyes during the solos leading up to the death at the End.... Obviously, this reaction was early in their metal reactions career, and they'd basically reacted to only a limited selection of thrash before this, so I wonder if George and Ryan would be willing to come back and react to this song again some day, now that they've seen a wider range of metal, and have had the new perspective of some time and distance to re-review the song with?
Bruce Dickinson the vocalist of Iron Maiden it's really awesome for him to be in his sixties he still has his voice together not like others...Rawk!On Iron Maiden
You guys basically described an Iron Maiden show without ever having been to one! Haha! Very theatrical, very epic performances. Love your vids, glad you picked this legendary band, keep 'em coming. - Up the Irons!
Great reaction guys. Iron Maiden is one of my favorite bands. The vocals and lyrics have always been a reason I put them towards the top of my list of favorite metal bands.
Iron Maiden's live shows are among the best theatrical productions ever performed. They're one of the few bands that is even better live than in the studio.
I can't believe I just found you guys. Hallowed is my favorite song on Earth. Iron Maiden is my favorite band. In fact, my name, TheTrooper97, is after their song The Trooper. I live in Vegas too! I was impressed by the commentary, and that's not easy for me. Def subscribing!
You're comments on life and death etc., actually brought a tear to my eye. Not in a sad way, but in a fuck, these guys are so honest and human and I feel the exact same way kind of way. The world is in deficit of honesty and you guys don't give a fuck, you just go for it. And that's how I am with my friends and they are with me. We need more of this. Keep on keepin on you two. I know I'm not saying nothing new here... but I just HAD to say something.
AddictedBassAnglers I have to say something. Repent of the profanity and all your other sins, turn to Jesus who leads you to eternal life. He will make you fishers of men. Btw do not take the mark of the beast 666. I stay across from a Loch here in Scotland where anglers like you fish for carp. The two I know are heavily into Rock music too. Blessings in Christ Jesus.
You guys are the best reaction page I’ve seen. You take the time to actually feel the music. You dissect it well. And you express your sentiments about the music quite well. Subbed.
Love the honesty and your interpretation. I have listened to and loved this song for 30+ years and I got something new out of you listening to it. Love it
The thing i love about your channel is that despite me already loving all these classic metal songs, you make me think about the song on a whole other level. I love how open and positive you guys are when listening to something that a lot of people immediately dismiss because they won't give it their time and focus to enjoy and appreciate it. Keep up the awesome reactions!
Matthew Williams totally agree, people won't sit down and listen to metal and try and give it a chance because it is so looked down on that people think we're satanists or they say it's just screaming and just noise when they don't even properly listen to the music, sad society we live in really I mean I can't judge anyone on what they like because it's what they like but for pop (mainstream music fans) to call it not real music or it's just noise I mean come on
As a huge fan of hip-hop and metal this video is fantastic. You guys obviously know what you're doing and seem good at objectively evaluating something you don't even listen to regularly.
you guy's absolutely get it! That is what the song is about. So great to see two black guy's giving a honest opinion on heavy metal music! I have black friends, and they would never even try to listen to this..lol..I really like your Rock reviews..
I've listened to this song since 1990 and I've never heard anyone discuss the lyrics the way that you have. As I age though I contemplate the nature of God, life and death more often and you have really captured what I feel is the essence of a very real and necessary question that humanity has no doubt posed to itself since its beginning. Thank you Ryan and George for your thoughtful and intelligent insights.
I'm a 51 yr old metalhead and I have loved this song since I first heard it It is about a midevil execution and so well written you can see the story unfold in your mind.
Being a bass player, this is one of my favorite rock bands! Steve Harris, the bassist, had a hand in writing, composing, most of this bands hits! Us bassist are always overlooked. But in this band, the bassist was a major cog!
Iron Maiden have been around since 1975. They have 16 studio albums and performed something like 2200 Live shows. and have one of the most loyal fan bases you will ever see. The singer Bruce Dickinson is a Man of many talents and even flies the band around the world in their Iron Maiden branded plane. The bands lyrics vary. older songs are about history and war to name some lyrics.
The writing in this song is top quality, the instrumentation was also on par with the lyrics and personally I like the way it makes you think and discuss about what they are saying. I think I will seek out what other songs they have thanks to this Reaction so I can get used to them and more familiarize myself with the rock/metal genre. Great Job Guys.
Nate Baker You should check out the album this song is on, it’s called “The Number of The Beast”. Some other similar songs from them are: Children of the damned and Fear of the Dark. Check them out, I think you’ll enjoy them if you liked this. Enjoy!
Love watching you guys react metal and express your appreciation even if it's not your cup of tea. I listen to many genres (including country and metal back to back, go figure), and have my entire life. I still think, in this day and age of bubble gum and canned music generated for the masses and radio appeal, metal is the one remaining genre that mostly hasn't caved to commercial pressures. I also think it is where you find the most talented musicians, lyricists, composers, and arrangers in the industry. As many have already said, Iron Maiden is one of the "godfather" bands that influenced generations of future metal bands. Listen to some more of them. You will find that tge vast majority of their songs are based on historical events, literature, or biblical/spiritual subjects, and they were very adept at creating the imagery over which they laid out the story...hence the theatrical nature of their music. It may sound dated now, but at the time no one else had ever done anything like it. Many have emulated them, but no one has ever duplicated them. There is a reason they remain one of the most popular bands of all time.
Thank you for your honest opinion regarding one of the best songs, regardless of genres, ever written. Its great that you were very open minded, appreciated the story telling and the musicianship of one of, in my opinion, best bands in history. You mentioned that this song sounds dated - cause it is. The fact this song is still popular and a fan favorite 30+ years later is awesome. Your reactions are awesome! thanks again!
Steve Harris, bass player, founder of Iron Maiden, primary songwriter, is a fan of old English Literature....."Hallowed Be Thy Name" is old English poem.
This is classic Iron Maiden. What I love about them is exactly what you guys pointed out, their lyrics & music really drag you into the song like you're there living it. You also nailed the theatrical nature of the band, watch some live videos (or better yet, see them live) and you'll be blown away, I guarantee it.
Still remember all the lyrics 33 years later, like when i was in front of my dads turntable listening and singing it all day, throughout all year. Every single word. Iconic song of classics
It's so funny that you guys stopped the video to talk about how you were picturing him yelling to the Heavens right before the part in the song where he yells to the heavens. Keep up the good work. These videos make my day because of how genuine the reactions are.
Great reaction/review as always... Just wanted to say that I really appreciate the fact you two aren't afraid to analyse the lyricism and engage in some philosophical discussion -- it's a rarity and a treat to stumble across people that have genuine depth. I look forward to your reaction/review of 'Wretch 32 - Fire In The Booth, Part 3', lol :P
When I see someone have a brand new reaction to something that I've known and loved for years, it somehow makes me feel like a proud papa. I think it's the good ol' "I know, right?" feeling boiling up. Hope I'm not the only one that thinks that way.
Maiden was my teenage years. Even since Paul Dianno...but Bruce -Number of the Beast -I was hooked - and to watch these hip hop guys analyze the very lyrics I did when I was young -...been feeling like laughing and crying at the same time -...Farmer G -you're not the only one
My first exposure to Maiden was when I borrowed my brother's Somewhere In Time tape, then I went out and bought Seventh Son... I must have played that tape a thousand times. First thing I got hooked to was the lyrics, so I love the analysis. I hope you guys are listening and hope you do more songs. With exception to a few misses, most of the Maiden song lyrics are gold.
Exactly, we need to drop this elitism in metal, it is a symptom of close minded stereotypes and severely inflated egos. There is soo much other amazing shit that will enrich your lives, please give genres outside of your comfort zone a chance, you won't regret it.
Hunnit Round Heath Yes, fuck metal elitists. Jazz is fucking amazing, Funk is fucking amazing, Blues is fucking amazing, Rock is fucking amazing, Rap is fucking amazing, even pop is fucking amazing. You just gotta find the best stuff.
I know why, but Maiden has always been my favorite band. “Dated” is absolutely true, which plays into why they’re my favorites. I’m a metal head white boy that grew up in the butt crack of Texas in the mid eighties, who married a black woman. I’ve tried and tried to show her the magic of Maiden and she just doesn’t get it. I love what you guys did with this. You put more thought into the tune than I ever did. You just got a new sub. 👍🏻
I think you're kinda jumping in the deep end with this one. This is definitely not the music you want to start out with for someone who's not much into "rock". I grew up on mainly hip hop/rap and r&b. I didn't listen to anything really that would fall under the rock category. I started with the bad stuff on the radio and worked my way up :) Start out with easily accessible stuff and maybe she will eventually grow to like Iron Maiden.
ijustneedmyself84 yeah for sure. But she’s already into Tool and a few more mainstream Tallica tunes. She’s definitely got me beat on variety. She just can’t appreciate Maiden, the best band the world will ever know. 😀
Daniel Guidry I saw them live in Phoenix in 85' outdoor show, 42000 people. it was awesome!!! the recorded live after death a few weeks later in long beach. so our set list was the same as that album. great show!
Keep it up guys. I wish every reaction channel was like you guys. The way you delve into the lyrics and go on tangents about them in really intelligent ways is amazing. You should do indians by anthrax
Okay, I've never understood the need for these 'reaction' videos, but as a lifelong Maiden fan, I had to watch. Damn, you guys nailed it. Thank you! You need to do Caught Somewhere in Time, paying close attention to the guitar solos by Dave Murray and then Adrian Smith. It's unbelievably powerful. And then you should REALLY do Number of the Beast. I'd love to see your reaction to that masterpiece.
pyromaniacmatt that's how I was until I saw the Walk video they did and now I'm kind of hooked it's great seeing the reactions and thoughts. It's great to see they are into music in general that's what makes them so good.
I was thinking the same, I thought maybe they'd have a bad reaction to this (most people that I know do coz they just have a different music taste) but damn they hit the nail on the head
this is what happens when a history proffessor writes lyrics.take notice of every historical based track maiden recorded, every song is not only historically accurate, but also written in era correct speach and dialect.impressive
I am not a big fan of reaction videos but somehow I got caught by you guys. Amazing video, amazing discussion. Thank you for this! Greetings from Germany!
Love Iron Maiden! In high school I was on home detention (don't judge me) and I couldn't go to the concert when they came to KC. A friend of mine went to the concert with her boyfriend telling her mom she was at my place babysitting with me. She asked me to cover if her mom called. I said sure...but you have to call me from a payphone as close to the stage as you can find and let me hear them live over the phone. She did it!!! It was great!!!!
Yup. It's why the Blaze Bayley years were still legendary. Clansman is one of their most epic pieces and Futureal is one of their best riffs imo \m/ maiden for life
What is amazing to me, is the way good music, in this case metal, can transcend anything, creed, rase, backround, etc. It's just food for the soul, vibrant which shakes us all no matter what. Thank you guys, you're making these quite refreshing :)
Andrei Mirea Maiden are a great showcase for this as well. You see them going to countries like Japan, India, South America etc and selling out tens of thousands of tickets at each show. It's beautiful to see people from different cultures all coming together for music.
Maiden was my first concert ever. 1986, Somewhere in Time tour(I was 10, damn where’s the time go?ha!). Still one of the best shows I’ve seen to this day.
If you ever see an Iron Maiden concert...it is one big production. Very theatrical. Your comments on seeing someone singing with the spotlight on only them is very accurate for their concerts. They put on one hell of a show.
Joe Schmidl i am 45 and just saw my first maiden concert this past July. Been to many other shows but The Book of Souls concert was hands down the best.
It's honestly the best concert I have ever been to, those guys really know how to put on a show. From Bruce running all over the place like a mad man to Steve Harris aiming his bass at you like a rifle while shredding on it, it's just an experience.
Great reaction guys. Ryan got the point about this song, and he got it at the first listen, so big big compliments to him. Hallowed Be Thy Name is probably one of the best songs I've ever heard for the complementarity between music and lyrics. Simply, one accompanies the other perfectly throughout the 7 minutes. Ryan's suggestion of the acceptance of the death by the condemned during the instrumental/solo part is totally right, for me. 2 verses (amazingly written,as you said), then the first guitar break (repeated at the very end). Then, an intermezzo for a few seconds (THE moment of the death, to me), and then all the instrumental development where it's like his soul is ascending to somewhere/something else ("I've gone beyond to see the truth"). All closed by the blessing: Hallowed Be Thy Name. This is how I interpreted this song since the first time I heard it, and that's why it's for sure my favorite by Maiden. It may grow on you or it may not (melodies are awesome!), but you already got the lyrical/theatrical point. You are good listeners guys.
Machine's Head cover is phenomenal. I had the pleasure to see them playing it live for the first time. In Lisbon. You can look for the video, Rock In Rio Lisoa Machine Head Hallowed be thy Name.
Sometimes, when the wind is just right, you can still hear the note Dickinson has been holding since 1984.

Hehe and that their fans are primarily into metal :D That view ratio isn't even close!
For real!
LOL, NO SHIT!
@@VRShow I was just looking at that tonight . Some of the songs have as many views as the songs by themselves .

"Yeah, he gettin' busy!" "That's hot!" -- I don't think I've ever heard anyone say that while listening to Iron Maiden, haha. I love these reaction videos and the fact you're so open-minded about types of music you would never usually listen to.
So true 😀
If there is ANY metal band to see live, you HAVE to see Iron Maiden!
5 times during the eighties. Has stayed with me in ways I cannot explain here. You really had to be there. Power slave, WOW.
Saw them 8 times and i agree man they are great live band
You're also required by law to tailgate beforehand
3 times here. Once in the 80’s and saw the Book of Souls tour twice, once in Denver and then in Brooklyn.

Yeah, consciousness and shit. Lol!

Great reaction guys. Iron Maiden is one of my favorite bands. The vocals and lyrics have always been a reason I put them towards the top of my list of favorite metal bands.
I feel so lucky to have found your videos. You guys are fantastic.
Iron Maiden's live shows are among the best theatrical productions ever performed. They're one of the few bands that is even better live than in the studio.
I like how they were inspired to have some pretty deep conversation by Iron Maiden. Metal. It's what's for dinner.

Iron Maiden are known for telling stories through their songs especially world history stories.
Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner. Powerslave. Both good examples
Alexander the Great one their best
The trooper, the clansman, mother russia, passchendaele, montsegur.
As a student studying history, I thought Alexander the Great was disappointing, as a fan of metal I thought it was disappointing and anti-climactic.
Well.. it is their genre (as in they define it) so one would expect that:3 (power metal)
This music has shaped me. Thanks for not being disrespectful. I appreciate you all.

Matthew Williams I think you hit it right on the head man.

I've listened to this song since 1990 and I've never heard anyone discuss the lyrics the way that you have. As I age though I contemplate the nature of God, life and death more often and you have really captured what I feel is the essence of a very real and necessary question that humanity has no doubt posed to itself since its beginning. The bands lyrics vary. older songs are about history and war to name some lyrics.
wtf their first album wasn't until '80
Grigori Rasputin correct but they have been a band since 1975 look it up.
I also suggest you check out Iron Maiden's new album The Book of Souls 😊
Nate Baker just look at all albums!!!
For songs of theirs with completely different feels than this check out, "The Trooper" or "Run to the Hills"
I am amazed how the changes in tempo always gets newcomers with awe.

Steve Harris, bass player, founder of Iron Maiden, primary songwriter, is a fan of old English Literature....."Hallowed Be Thy Name" is old English poem.
I always likened this song to Dickens's "A Visit to Newgate".

This is classic Iron Maiden. What I love about them is exactly what you guys pointed out, their lyrics & music really drag you into the song like you're there living it. You also nailed the theatrical nature of the band, watch some live videos (or better yet, see them live) and you'll be blown away, I guarantee it.
Absolutely, Theatrics is the name of the game and they are the best in that regard.

Bonehead Guitars, it might sound dated now, but at the time it was way ahead of its time
I don't think dated is necessarily correct, I think "timeless" would be a more apt description.
I think you're kinda jumping in the deep end with this one. This is definitely not the music you want to start out with for someone who's not much into "rock". I grew up on mainly hip hop/rap and r&b. I didn't listen to anything really that would fall under the rock category. I started with the bad stuff on the radio and worked my way up :) Start out with easily accessible stuff and maybe she will eventually grow to like Iron Maiden.
locusmortis agreed. Point well taken.
ijustneedmyself84 yeah for sure. But she’s already into Tool and a few more mainstream Tallica tunes. She’s definitely got me beat on variety. She just can’t appreciate Maiden, the best band the world will ever know. 😀

Perfectly put
Agreed. With most bands, there is really nothing to see. You just listen to the live music. But with maiden, the visuals tell part of the story.
These dudes get it.
