Maiden has a lot of songs referring to historical events, literature, mythology, etc. They're the ones who opened my mind to a lot of those subjects in school. Alexander the Great, Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Trooper, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, To Tame a Land, Brave New World, Children of the Damned...... Many more songs. Awesome band and song writing!

I dont think To Tame a Land would fall under historical. It is based on the Frank Herbert novel Dune. Now that would be good to point out how they incorporate literay references (same with Murders in the Rue Morgue, Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Brave New World). Historical Maiden songs (oddly enough, majority are Bruce Dickinson era songs). In addtion to Run to the Hills: Invaders (Viking conquest of the British Isles), Aces High, Paschendale, Monsegure, Tears of the Clown (about Robin Williams suicide and depression), The Trooper, Alexander the Great, Tail Gunner, The Clansman (about the fight for Scottish independence in the 1500s, not about the Klan), These Colors don't Run, The Longest Day (Normandy invasion, 6 June 1944), Empire of the Sun, Death of the Celts, Darkest Hour (the battle of Dunkirk in World War II). I may have missed a few. Bruce Dickinson's degree is in History.

I'm 54 and this song hit me hard when I first heard it.
On a side note for humor, I was aboard my buddy Danny's boat/yacht... It was the cleanest boat in the boat club and all the teakwood work was done my his own self. It was the party boat in all of the Ford Yacht Club on Grosse Ille Michigan. Taylor Time was the name. Danny's wife, Lori and her brother Jimmi... We were all best friends at one time. Lori and Jimmy lived next door to where my daughter lived (I co-parented my daughter's whole life and she turned 18 this year and graduated high school with honors). Jimmy got me a job as a forklift mechanic and he was my supervisor. We got along like brothers. It was 2004 I believe... 4th of July weekend.. we all set off up the Detroit river, across lake st clair, up the river there headed to a town port named St Clair michigan. Jimmy installed the KILLER sound system in the boat and the vessel was Always operated up top from the bridge, never from down below. We blasted any and all kinds of music the whole time that boat was in motion and half the time when it was docked. We were like the 3 brothers on the bridge with Danny at the wheel of his own boat. Jimmy asked for requests as we entered that port. I requested this song. Jimmi said "I've never had iron maiden requested... Let's go!" He turned that system to ear bleed levels and we slowly motored into that slip... He followed it up with a bunch of kid rock from devil without a cause which was still the thing at the time. Once we tied down at the dock we had a freaking crowd

Iron Maiden has quite a few songs inspired by historical events or by classic literature.
Aces High depicts the Battle of Britain from the perspective of an RAF Spitfire pilot. The Trooper is set during the Battle of Balaclava during the Crimean War and, more specifically, is inspired by the poem The Charge of the Light Brigade by Tennyson. Alexander the Great is pretty self explanatory. Murders in the Rue Morgue is based on a short story be Edgar Allan Poe. Rime of the Ancient Mariner is based on a poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Paschendale is about one of the bloodiest battles of WWI. Empire of the Clouds is about the British airship R101 which crashed on its maiden (pun not intended) voyage and was actually deadlier than the Hindenburg disaster. This is just an incomplete list, to give some context. There are plenty others.
They also did a lot of songs inspired by science fiction :)
Bottom line Iron Maiden are great musical storytellers.

Steve Harris' playing is unique. That 8th/16th gallop beat is just a great driving bassline and wasn't really seen much around the same time.
Even if you guys aren't really fans, I respect that you guys give it a fair chance and are legitimately objective even if it isn't for you.

I first saw Maiden for my 12th birthday at Radio City Music Hall Jan 19th, ‘85. First ever concert.
My father was a mostly quiet and reserved man. He noticed how much I was into them, I asked him if we could go see them, and he said “ok”. That’s some Above and beyond Dad effort. God bless him. And God bless all of you’s too. Up The Irons!

Paul's songs (first 2 albums) were little horror stories, set to music.
Bruce is a student of history, among other things. And yes, he loves to be blunt and blow minds. History, literature and philosophy are recurring themes for his songs.
This is pretty much their "POP" song. Definitely got the most air play, back in the day.
Maiden was hands down one of the most influential bands of the 80's metal scene. Everyone stole from them, even bands that talked shit about them.
One of the hardest working, most ethically conscious and influential bands in recorded music history.
    And they're better live.

Last album with great drummer Clive Burr. He later recorded with different bands. Including Desperado. A band that also had Dee Snider from Twisted Sister and former Gillan guitarist Bernie Tormé in the band. Was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in the 90's. Iron Maiden did some concerts and events to fund Burr like they helped out former singer Paul Di'Anno when he needed a heart surgery. Burr died in 2013 age 56. Spent a lot of years in a wheelchair

The lead singer, Bruce Dickinson, was a history major in uni (university) in England before joining the band. It is really hard to get into uni as a brit. Iron Maiden is the BEST METAL BAND EVER! I get the production issues; I feel the same. But their music, over 44+ years, is the best metal ever. I hope you listen to more and learn to love Maiden. Try Aces High next. WW II historical, short, and rocking!

Day 1 of requesting Lost in Vegas to react to Children of Bodom. I'd suggest 3 songs
    1. "Are you dead yet" which is considered to be one of the best metal songs ever
    2. If you want something slower "Angels don't kill".
    3. "Needled 24/7" which is one of their most popular songs and just kicks ass for the entire duration.

Id say a majority of Iron Maiden's lyrics are based on historical events, literary work or philosophical interpretations of war, almost folksy in how well they tell a clear story. Absolutely an incredible live band even to this day, they have great stage energy and some of the coolest stage setups Ive seen to match the song being played. Probably a better live band than recorded honestly, they definitely have a distinct songwriting style they like to stick to so the visuals really add to the experience.

One of my most memorable concert moments was seeing Iron Maiden in San Antonio at the old Verizon wireless amphitheater when this song slowed down and Bruce goes into the yea, yeah, whoa, oooohh, ohhh, ohhhhh, oohhhhhhh!! I remember looking around, the lights turned on to see the whole place going ape shit and everyone joining Bruce after the drum break... Run to the hills!!! Wow! What a night! No cell phones in sight and everyone just singing along. This was early 2000s.

I'd think it was the fantasy elements, but you both dig Dio, so it's not that. I'd bet it's the theatricality of the vocals as much as anything, since a number of those type of singers didn't seem to resonate either.

I think that's a spot on analysis. I love Maiden but they're quite corny at times and Dickinson is one of those vocalists where you're either going to be okay with it or totally turned off. Maiden is also one of those bands with a massive discography and people are very much fans of a certain selection of songs--everybody's being different.

Love you guys. You'll never understand Iron Maiden without experiencing their first two albums. Paul Di'anno, the original singer, brought a soulful vibe to the group, which was a perfect blend of bluesy grit and heavy metal. They caught the world off guard in 1980. Love Bruce, but no way to replace the pained and soulful sound of DiAnno. The whole band was a bit more raw and organic.
