Historically And Justice was a really dark album, one that they recorded over the loss of their Bassist Cliff Burton who had died while the band was touring a year and a half earlier. One is based on Johnny got his gun by Dalton Trumbo who both wrote the book in 1939 but also directed the film in 1971. Joe is the soldier, who was a son and was engaged to be married and the very last day of World War One is the victim of a mortar shell blast that blinds him, causes him deafness, removes his jaw and nose, and severely injures his arms and legs which have to be amputated. Unaware that Joe is conscious and can still think and feel, he is believed to be an unthinking, unfeeling vegetable. Recognizing that he wishes to be dead due to the extent of his injuries once he becomes conscious and is able to piece together exactly what has happened to him he desperately begins to try to find a way to communicate to the Nurses and Doctors. As a last-ditch effort, he decides to use morse code, using his head to tap out the messages. S.O.S. Help, Kill me. Which at first is misinterpreted as part of his condition slipping until they begin to notice its consistency. The story ends with Joe finally getting his wishes across to one of his nurses who tries to end his suffering but is stopped by a Military superior and ends ambiguously with whether he remains in his state or whether they finally end his misery.
Great synopsis. Thank you. Understanding the backstory allows one to envision the content of the lyrics and musical aggression being affected by the story.

Jon Oden If they even claim this isn’t great they’re certainly not elite to anyone but themselves. Any true metal head that’s been in it since before it was cool considers “One” a timeless classic.
Metallica just did it better than all the other 80s bands so there is a lot of jealousy. Hetfield is the greatest metal front man ever. The riffs, the songwriting, the vocals, the stage presence. Dude was the GOAT
That's just it. The 80's is when the band was pure. Trust me the 90s is when metal became pop and so did the band. I grew up on metalica but nobody i knew nor myself would listen anymore after their first three.
Yep, if you look their making of the new album videos on their channel, you cant deny the level of input and creation of a song lars brings to the table. Also everyone in the band pretty much states it, lars is the one who actually shapes most of their songs.
I actually really dislike this sentiment as it seems to imply metal cannot on its own reach such levels of artist merit without the need to transcend it's own boundaries, it is definitely metal and this shows just how badass metal can be
Ash Scott I hear you, but I was referring to the voiceover in the music video. They would be better able to enjoy the song with out the movie playing behind it. I feel they didn’t get the full experience with the music video. I own the album and can listen to it that way whenever I like. -regards.

Absolutely... Something about seeing the excitement and awe when they dig it that takes you right back to the first time you experienced the excitement and awe...
That's precisely how I feel! They totally get it and they react how I did the first time I heard it. What a great song. I'm off to listen to the album.
My 11th grade English Lit. teacher had us read "Johnny Got His Gun" by Dalton Trumbo (the book that inspired the movie that inspired this song). This was in 1990. At the end of the quarter we watched the movie and listened to this song. My dad (a Vietnam veteran of the Marine Corps) saw the book in my bag and asked to read it. He later thanked my English Lit. teacher for making us read it. I wasn't prepared for that. My English Lit. teacher wasn't ready for that. When she asked my dad, he said "War isn't cool. It should never look cool, either."
I forget what chapter it is, but he’s laying talking about the government and the horrors of war and how the soldier is a pawn. It was the most intense chapter I’ve ever read in my life out of a book
No bullshit, I had exactly the same experience...I was introduced to the song by my 11th grade English lit teacher in 1990 because we'd just finished reading Johnny Got His Gun. I know that makes sense considering the film is referenced throughout the video, but the other coincidences are too much... Did you go to high school in Canada?
Thank your father and all our service men/women for their dedication to this country. But yes. The book was eye opening/ground breaking for me personally. And yes. War should never look cool. Because it isn’t. But sadly sometimes necessary. .
Whoever told you this song isn't metal or not a good song, is either trolling you or deaf. This is one of their best stories they told, it was dark, depressing and terrifying all at once.
yeah, ive literally NEVER, in the 30 years this song has been out, listening to it ALL the last 30 years, heard people trash this song. this must be a newer internet thing, because no one in the community talked shit about this era, no one..... now, Metallica (the black album) is when people said they changed and sold out. but if there were haters in the day, they must have been a small community that has just been amplified in recent years because of the internet. this song is a god damned masterpiece
They didn't win a Grammy for this song. They should have, but Jethro Tull of all bands, beat them in the metal category. Jethro Tull isn't metal! That day the world was shown that the Grammys didn't no shit about heavy metal music.
Jason Hitchcock they did won the Grammy with this song in 1990, they lost in the best hard rock metal album against Jethro tull (sad but true) but yes they did won with this song
The "video" you saw was actually clips from a movie called "Johnny Got His Gun" about a guy who was so injured he lost all his ability to communicate and move. He could only bob his head, and using morse code, begging someone to kill him. The song was remarkable in its success in dovetailing the movie's message with the song's lyrics and music. Outstanding!
I like metallica, but I was never a metalhead. But since the first time I heard One, it's been my favorite song ever since. A true masterpiece for the ages. Metallica shows their classical roots, as the music evolves almost organically, weaving around and throughout the story.
This is one of the greatest metal songs ever written.. period. It's hip and trendy to hate metallica in the metal community. But if it wasn't for this song and other metallica albums. None of those metal elitist bands would exist. No matter what they say.. Old metallica will always be metal.
@M3rett0 I think you meant to say, "they didn't invent the genre". They certainly influenced it. I guarantee most metal bands today draw influence from the sound Metallica pioneered
john vaughn Yes yes and yes! Absolutely one of the best songs of all time. Classic Metallica strongly helped form metal in its early years no matter what some people think they know. Other bands as well. I also still say Dio was a formative metal god and always will be.
Kill Em' All is the record that pioneered the Thrash Metal genre. There were elements of Thrash before Metallica from bands like Sabbath, Queen, Motorhead and Venom, but Metallica is the band that wrapped it all up into 1 package. I know there were bands on the east and west coasts doing Thrash at the same time Metallica were, but Metallica got their record out first. With all that being said, Metallica bores the hell out of me and I'm disappointed whenever I see these guys react to them !!!
This song is about the 1939 Dalton Trumbo novel Johnny Got his Gun. The clips in the video are from the 1971 movie version. The black and white scenes are his present condition after stepping on the land mine, the scenes in color are him flashing back to his life before the accident. Both the novel and the movie have been banned and very difficult to get at various points in history due to the powerful anti-war message. Metallica bought the rights to the movie to use in this video. The original author Trumbo was one of the people blacklisted during the McCarthy communism witchhunts.
I bought the movie on DVD about a year ago and still haven't got around to watching it. I am curious to watch the whole movie after seeing the One video so many times.
Actually, this song was not written based on this book. Cliff Burton had the idea about the lyrics and has recognition for helping write it. The band did not know anything about the book or movie till later.
What scares me about this song, the movie and the book all of them are based on is it doesn't take a landmine to do such a thing to a human being. Car crash, stroke, it is my deepest fear that this could happen to me or a loved one. Pure torture that this song captures beautifully.
My favorite part of this is how much the guy on the left is enjoying this! Reminds me of the first time I heard this song! And it feels so authentic, I feel so many other pages just do the same reaction to every song. I had goosebumps on the bridge.
This song is heavily based on the book "Johnny Got His Gun" about a man who wakes up to realized he has lost his arms, legs, and most of his face from combat during World War 1. He cannot see, hear, speak, or move and is left only with his thoughts. It's a great read for anyone interested on where the inspiration for this great song came from.
ya boi E Not iconic. It's part of metal history. If its good/bad/awesomme/crap. Well... Up to each and everyone to judge. I only like the last non melodic part. First part sucks balls, last part kicks ass.
River Feinx Cool.... Would be a really bad thing if we all had the same taste in music. I doubt metallica would be something someone liked, if we all had the same taste in music. I bet mozart or bach or something like that would be the only kind of music people liked. You know, the old hardcore classic music, wich is done to perfection.
Lars plays incredibly here, and I am talking about the first part, the fast part is of course great, but the first part the fresh and rhythm - pattern is amazing. He is one of most creative drummers evers. It does not matter if some hits were not on point it is about the creativity and he is one of best I have heard. I dont care about on point , that a computer can do.
@Narrow Path yep. So sad how he gets talked about in a bad light. Not like every memeber can be in the Top 10 of their craft(Rush can), but it is exactly what you said. Without lars there is no Metallica.
Y’all gotta stop listening to these elitists. They hate on great stuff for the sake of hating on it. What this reaction proves is that Metallica translates so well to so many listeners. Elitists just want to hate because it’s not some obscure band no one has heard of. Metallica is one of metals greatest bands, case closed.
Grant C. Right? The solo in Bleeding Me is probably my FAVORITE Metallica solo ever. It really packs a punch! St.Anger is an underrated album as fuck. People just jump on the hate train cause they don't wanna be left out. The only bad thing about the album was the sound quality. The Unnamed Feeling is my favorite on that album.
Those same elitists will sing along to the Bard's Song, tell you how metal it is and hate on Metallica for selling out. Well if Metllica didn't sell out alot of those elitists most likely would not even know what metal is.
If you even understand a little bit about music you'll be able to see the incredible power and emotion within this classic. I retired from the military a couple years ago after 25 years of service. I understand the torture and finality of war first hand as I have known many buddies that have been devastated one way or another. I cannot listen to this song or watch this video without it having a profound affect on me for the rest of the day. I tend to avoid experiencing "ONE" these days because it emotionally drains me but I had to see your take on it. Thanks boys, another awesome job!

i wish they would of listened to just the song itself with out the movie overtones, or the video with out the movie in the background. all that talking and war sounds kind of takes away from the song in my opinion. for a first time listen i mean. they should listen to it just the song first.
Definitely this. We can throw them for a total loop and have them listen to Ghost Prototype II: Deus Ex Machina. That intro would make them very confused.

Same , when Metallica hit the scene nothing in the music world were like them. Maybe Maiden or definitely Black Sabbath , but Metallica had an aggressive punk like fast vibe , different than those before.
This is why Metallica is the highest selling Heavy Metal band in history. They bring class to metal, variety to metal, something other than just 240 BPM. I know I am not the only one to say this, but ONE is a Masterpiece.
Yeah for sure, they were pioneers and their music has stood the test of time. They also experimented a lot and tried different things. They are the modern day metal version of Led Zep
Also, yeah. Not a Pantera fan, but I'm seeing a lot of push for Cemetery Gates by Pantera, and that's the one song of there's that I like a lot. So I'm gonna have to throw a vote in for that.
The scenes for this video is from the 1971 movie Johnny Got His Gun. Metallic bought the rights to the entire movie so they can use any clips they want.
Based on the book 'Johnny got his gun' by Dalton Trumbo. About a guy that gets blown up in WW1. It was banned in the US for about 50 years for being, 'unpatriotic' and 'unhelpful to the war effort'. Great book well worth the read.
I have never heard anyone say this is trash. Or that it isn't metal, because it clearly is. The guys in the video have totally misunderstood it for some reason. Maybe they mistook it for something off of Load, that on the other hand isn't metal and it's trash.
Johan, i've seen people claim this song is shit all the time growing up, I think it was primarily due to 3 things: A.) They made their first music video which prior they were strictly against. B.) This song could really be considered their break into the main stream. It may not be a "enter sandman" in terms of accessability, but it got routine play on MTV. C.) It's post Cliff. Some people are just ardent that anything without Cliff is garbage. To me this is a true example of Metallica's prowess beyond being just a "thrash" band. They had that emotional connection that many of their contemporaries lacked.

Arturo Madrid no argument about it. This is the pinnacle of metallica's music. Don't get any better.
Thank you!
Great synopsis. Thank you. Understanding the backstory allows one to envision the content of the lyrics and musical aggression being affected by the story.
Reading Johnny Got His Gun really helped me get the full effect of these lyrics. Heavy shit.

This is Metallica in their prime, period.
Yeah they lost a huge piece when Cliff died but they were definitely still in their prime. SO many great songs on this album, and One is one of the best of all time.

This was/is Metallica in their prime. AJFA is my favorite.
This song is one of the hardest metal songs. Metallica never fails. And Lars kills it
Metallica just did it better than all the other 80s bands so there is a lot of jealousy. Hetfield is the greatest metal front man ever. The riffs, the songwriting, the vocals, the stage presence. Dude was the GOAT
We also need to give Lars credit when it comes to songwriting. And Kirk's awesome melodies.
no, that's not the reason to the hate.
The one's who say this is trash are worst kind of hipsters, this in one of the greatest metal songs of all time and a masterpiece

So true, verbatim Kilt.
Great story. Thanks for sharing, and thank your father for his service.🇺🇸
Just finished reading.

I'm not even much of a metallica fan overall, but consider this one of the best songs of all time from any band or artist.
Same here!
Metallica isn't Black Sabbath, they didn't influence the whole genre.
@M3rett0 I think you meant to say, "they didn't invent the genre".
They certainly influenced it. I guarantee most metal bands today draw influence from the sound Metallica pioneered
john vaughn
Yes yes and yes! Absolutely one of the best songs of all time. Classic Metallica strongly helped form metal in its early years no matter what some people think they know. Other bands as well. I also still say Dio was a formative metal god and always will be.
M3rett0, you're not serious, are you?!?! They did in fact influence the whole genre! SMDH!
Was going to post this. Read the book 40 years ago.
Awesome Thanks Adam
I didn't know this that's actually really cool
I bought the movie on DVD about a year ago and still haven't got around to watching it. I am curious to watch the whole movie after seeing the One video so many times.
Actually, this song was not written based on this book. Cliff Burton had the idea about the lyrics and has recognition for helping write it. The band did not know anything about the book or movie till later.
What scares me about this song, the movie and the book all of them are based on is it doesn't take a landmine to do such a thing to a human being. Car crash, stroke, it is my deepest fear that this could happen to me or a loved one. Pure torture that this song captures beautifully.

I'm surprised how few people know this.

The scenes for this video is from the 1971 movie Johnny Got His Gun. Metallic bought the rights to the entire movie so they can use any clips they want.
I did not know that...thanks for sharing! Love this song!
I need to see that movie!!!
The movie is so fucked up... and yet still worth seeing!!
And having seen the movie raises the music video to a whole different level then!
I wonder how much that cost
Based on the book 'Johnny got his gun' by Dalton Trumbo. About a guy that gets blown up in WW1. It was banned in the US for about 50 years for being, 'unpatriotic' and 'unhelpful to the war effort'. Great book well worth the read.
I've got goosebumps everytime hearing this song holy crap
When people actually "listen" they realize this is one of the top 5 songs of all time. Any song, any genre.
Top 5. I'll allow it.
Yup
This is my top 1. This is their finest work. An every day listen!
@@briancollins4569 was my everyday litsen for 5 years
I don't know what you're on, but this is clearly top 1. It even says so in the title "One"
this is "THRASH" not "TRASH" you might get it wrong. Song is iconic.
this need more upvotes
People say this is trash because it makes them feel something they are not used to ,its called empathy.
I close my eyes every time Kirk enters with the intro rift and I am to the point of crying
I have never heard anyone say this is trash. Or that it isn't metal, because it clearly is. The guys in the video have totally misunderstood it for some reason. Maybe they mistook it for something off of Load, that on the other hand isn't metal and it's trash.
This isn't trash, it's thrash
Johan, i've seen people claim this song is shit all the time growing up, I think it was primarily due to 3 things: A.) They made their first music video which prior they were strictly against. B.) This song could really be considered their break into the main stream. It may not be a "enter sandman" in terms of accessability, but it got routine play on MTV. C.) It's post Cliff. Some people are just ardent that anything without Cliff is garbage.
To me this is a true example of Metallica's prowess beyond being just a "thrash" band. They had that emotional connection that many of their contemporaries lacked.
beautifully said
Only the mind of geniuses could write this masterpiece Metallica in their prime 🤘🏼
