I remember being 14 years old, living in Seoul, South Korea (my dad was in the US Army) and buying my first two heavy metal albums: Diary of a Madman by Ozzy Osbourne and The Number of the Beast by Iron Maiden. This was in 1982 & I had heard of Ozzy before, but never bought any his music prior to that time. I had no clue at that point who or what Iron Maiden was. But the album cover instantly caught my eye & I just had buy it, my decision based on the artwork alone - LOL. Needless to say, it quickly became one of my favorite metal albums. Hallowed be thy name is probably one of my top favorite songs by Iron Maiden. Bruce Dickinson's voice is legendary. The two guitarists are equally badass, trading leads and solos often in mid-song. The bass is pretty intense too. You could be entertained just watching the bass player, he's the main song writer.
You will never hear a better rock bass player. Cliff Burton was a pretty close 2nd. I've been playing bass since the early 90s, mostly punk and hard rock, and watching him play puts my jaw on the floor every time.

But to be honest, this does not make the song "Hallowed be thy name" to what it is. Simply listen to "Life's Shadow", which might be a great piece of art but it is still quite a different song. It's not even similar to "Hallowed" and to what made this song so successful (but there are closer similarities to the Maiden song "Nomad"). Where are the double guitars, the galloping bass and drums and the "air-raid siren" vocals? True, Steve Harris is a Beckett fan, he knew the music and was probably influenced by Beckett when writing "Hallowed". But I would not go that far and say "Beckett wrote Hallowed partially." No, these are cross references and citations in best case. Maiden never made a secret of being Beckett fans: they covered the Beckett song "A rainbow's gold", there were regular meetings between Beckett and Maiden band members, they were invited as VIP to Maiden concerts etc. It's hard to believe Steve Harris stole the song material and ripped Beckett off, if there seems to be a long year friendship between the bands.

Maiden pragmatically settled this due to escalating legal fees and the potential huge costs of a court case. Also important to mention is that Brian Ingham originally asked for £900.000 but was happy to get this settled with just a £100.000 payment. If he was so sure that he was right and could get more from Maiden, he could have refused this settlement and insist in a decision by a judge. Well, he did not - so what does this mean? In the end, one has to understand that exactly the same topic was already settled years ago between Maiden and Robert Barton, the other Beckett songwriter with writing credits for A Life's Shadow. Barton claimed back then that the lyrics were solely written by him - and not Brian Ingham. So Brian Ingham would also have to prove his writing credits for the lyrics, which might be difficult. There was a high risk that he would get nothing out of his claim in front of a judge after a long and costly trial! In my opinion, and by no means I'm knowing all the details, this looks more like Ingham needed some money and since his former band mate was already successful with such a claim he just tried the same. He is not the first (and certainly not the last) commercially unsuccessful rock musician who is topping up his pension by sewing a rich rock star that is ideally still active. And they all have in common that they had >30-40 years of amnesia before realizing somebody "stole" their idea...
I must correct myself with regard to my previous post. Brian Ingham was NOT even a member of the band Beckett. He claims to have written the song "Life's Shadow" together with Robert Barton before Robert joined Beckett. That alone should be difficult to prove after nearly 50 years. So there is no obvious connection between Ingham and the band Beckett. And this immediately raises the question whether Ingham also sued the band Beckett, because "his" lyrics were published on the album "Beckett"? More and more the suspicion grows that Brian Ingham is just a freeloader who wanted to increase his pension. And £100,000 for 6 lines of text - if he really wrote them - is certainly not a bad yield. It still remains to be discussed how much these 6 lines of text really contributed to the success of "Hallowed be thy name" or even of the band Iron Maiden. How big was the commercial success of Beckett's song "Life's Shadow", using (almost) the same 6 lines?
Maiden are amazing live. They've always been great live. They are one of the tightest band in existence. This is an old video, and they are an old band ,(literally). Go see them live now, they've gotten better with age. On another note, I feel bad that you missed out on so much music being so young, but in the other hand you get to do this and discover them now!
Funny to think when he 1st joined maiden people were sending hate letters to th maiden EMI office saying who the hell is this air raid siren of a singer ruining our favourite songs, they ignored the insult and used the air raid siren as a positive nickname.
There was clearly defined era where the studio versions of hard rock songs sounded like shit compared to their live performances so much so that before releasing them to radio they were “augmented” to improve their sound.
One of the nicest band’s I ever met. Bruce is on a whole new level of intelligence with being able to tell a mythical precautionary story in a way people go insane without knowing what is really being told to them.
I got into metal recently, with guidance from the mother of my 1st born. Really cant believe how much I missed out on. Seen Iron Maiden back in June live. The best performance I've ever seen .

I saw them in Athens Greece in 2018. Bruce turning 60 that summer and already had battled throat cancer and he sounded better than ever! Look him up he is a very inspiring man.

I remember back in September in 2000, my friend calling me and telling me “My bf just broke up with me, and we had tickets for Iron Maiden in a few days.. you down to go with me?” “HELL YES!!!!” I said. My first time seeing them in concert, it was amazing!!! Fast forward to September of this year, my friend calls and he says “Hey D! I know you don’t drink anymore and I was wondering if you’d be our designated driver to Iron Maiden. I got your gas and ticket..” Umm “Hell yes!!!!” We went and I relived that first show. They still sound amazing. And now seeing all these people bring their kids to these shoes, it really makes me happy!! Great reaction Jamal! As always! 💕

I saw them live back in July, and it was an incredible experience. Even in his 60’s and passing throat cancer, Dickinson still hitting crazy notes. Amazing band
The best thing about Iron Maiden is that they are exceptional at everything. Whether it be performance, lyrics, vocals, rhythm, drums, etc. There's just not an underwhelming part of anything they do
I took my sons to their very first rock concert when they were 13 and 14. Dream Theater and Iron Maiden. As we were walking in, I was pronounced the Greatest Father Ever by at least 10 aging Iron Maiden Fans. We all still have our t-shirts and both of my sons instantly got super interested in music! The whole band plays for the entire crowd, not just the front row. You can see Bruce making eye contact with people way out in the crowd.
As a child raised on rock n roll, the elder brother of a friend bought The Number of The Beast and I was fascinated by what I thought was the album art of something dark and scary. He played the title track for me. Now 50, I have remained a Maiden fan. UP THE IRONS!

Clive was fired and replaced by the current drummer Nicko Mc Brain. Bruce is a fully Qualified Airline Pilot, An Olympic grade Fencer once ranked 7th in the UK, A published Author of two novels plus writing his own biography called What does this button do? On their last world tour Bruce piloted Ed Force One, the bands Boeing 747 jet all over the world. He suffered from throat cancer and has since made a full recovery. He’s an amazing person. Iron Maiden are just part of Britain’s contribution to world music. A fantastic and iconic band.
Maiden almost always has a story in their songs. Sometimes it's of their own devising, like this one of a man going to be hanged. But often it's cribbed from some classic literary or historical source.
I find _Number of the Beast_ interesting and kind of funny in its source. Of course, there's the book of _Revelation,_ which you could easily assume to be the inspiration, but the direct inspiration for the lyrics was the poem _Tam o' Shanter,_ and nightmares Steve had after watching the second _Omen_ movie. :D
What is funny is that this beast of a singer is in private the most articulate gentleman you could imagine, and kind of a Renaissance man - from fencing champion to jumbo jet pilot. One of the coolest guy in rock'n roll.

I first ran into Iron Maiden in 1980 when I was staying at my aunt for the summer in Germany. Soon after they hit America. Saw them in Oakland at Day On the Green in 1982 for this tour. RIP Clive.
Clive Burr (original drummer here) was incredible. His replacement Nico McBrain is AMAZING!! He makes the drums sing. Listen to this song or Rime of the Ancient Mariner on the Flight 666 video on UA-cam. Even more impressive when you realise he doesn't use a double kick drum pedal.

When they originally did this gig, there was only 2 guitarists and the bass player. Steve Harris - Bass Adrian Smith - Guitar Dave Murray - Guitar A few years later, Adrian Smith left the band for a few years, and Bruce, the lead singer, brought in Janik Gers from his solo band to fill the spot. Then Adrian came back and Janik instead of leaving in a huff, stayed and became the third guitarist. The best part is that all three of them can interchange between playing lead and rythem guitar from song to song... and as someone said, even between songs. Their live shows are legendary with their mascot Eddie making an appearance during every show! Up The Irons!

Iron Maiden Foreman 1975 they've had several lead singers but I do believe that Bruce Dickinson is the best and the live version of Hello by their name was in 1982 and he is just phenomenal the way he's able to hold that note and he never gets drowned out by the guitar riffs

Also important to mention is that Brian Ingham originally asked for £900.000 but was happy to get this settled with just a £100.000 payment. If he was so sure that he was right and could get more from Maiden, he could have refused this settlement and insist in a decision by a judge. Well, he did not - so what does this mean?
In the end, one has to understand that exactly the same topic was already settled years ago between Maiden and Robert Barton, the other Beckett songwriter with writing credits for A Life's Shadow. Barton claimed back then that the lyrics were solely written by him - and not Brian Ingham. So Brian Ingham would also have to prove his writing credits for the lyrics, which might be difficult. There was a high risk that he would get nothing out of his claim in front of a judge after a long and costly trial!
In my opinion, and by no means I'm knowing all the details, this looks more like Ingham needed some money and since his former band mate was already successful with such a claim he just tried the same. He is not the first (and certainly not the last) commercially unsuccessful rock musician who is topping up his pension by sewing a rich rock star that is ideally still active. And they all have in common that they had >30-40 years of amnesia before realizing somebody "stole" their idea...
I must correct myself with regard to my previous post. Brian Ingham was NOT even a member of the band Beckett. He claims to have written the song "Life's Shadow" together with Robert Barton before Robert joined Beckett. That alone should be difficult to prove after nearly 50 years. So there is no obvious connection between Ingham and the band Beckett. And this immediately raises the question whether Ingham also sued the band Beckett, because "his" lyrics were published on the album "Beckett"? More and more the suspicion grows that Brian Ingham is just a freeloader who wanted to increase his pension. And £100,000 for 6 lines of text - if he really wrote them - is certainly not a bad yield. It still remains to be discussed how much these 6 lines of text really contributed to the success of "Hallowed be thy name" or even of the band Iron Maiden. How big was the commercial success of Beckett's song "Life's Shadow", using (almost) the same 6 lines?
Maiden are amazing live. They've always been great live. They are one of the tightest band in existence. This is an old video, and they are an old band ,(literally). Go see them live now, they've gotten better with age.
On another note, I feel bad that you missed out on so much music being so young, but in the other hand you get to do this and discover them now!

There was clearly defined era where the studio versions of hard rock songs sounded like shit compared to their live performances so much so that before releasing them to radio they were “augmented” to improve their sound.
One of the nicest band’s I ever met. Bruce is on a whole new level of intelligence with being able to tell a mythical precautionary story in a way people go insane without knowing what is really being told to them.
On October 9, 1980, Iron Maiden played for the first time in Sweden, in Eriksdalshallen in Stockholm. And i was there. :)

I saw them in Athens Greece in 2018. Bruce turning 60 that summer and already had battled throat cancer and he sounded better than ever! Look him up he is a very inspiring man.

That boy sure has a set of pipes on him. He’s a commercial pilot too, flys the band around the world when they’re on tour. This band was so huge that they hired a British airways jet for over a year. And it’s two guitarist, one bas, and a good, good drummer.

I remember back in September in 2000, my friend calling me and telling me “My bf just broke up with me, and we had tickets for Iron Maiden in a few days.. you down to go with me?”

My first time seeing them in concert, it was amazing!!!
Fast forward to September of this year, my friend calls and he says “Hey D! I know you don’t drink anymore and I was wondering if you’d be our designated driver to Iron Maiden. I got your gas and ticket..”

We went and I relived that first show. They still sound amazing. And now seeing all these people bring their kids to these shoes, it really makes me happy!!

The best thing about Iron Maiden is that they are exceptional at everything. Whether it be performance, lyrics, vocals, rhythm, drums, etc. There's just not an underwhelming part of anything they do
One of the best heavy metal bands ever in my opinion
I took my sons to their very first rock concert when they were 13 and 14. Dream Theater and Iron Maiden. As we were walking in, I was pronounced the Greatest Father Ever by at least 10 aging Iron Maiden Fans. We all still have our t-shirts and both of my sons instantly got super interested in music! The whole band plays for the entire crowd, not just the front row. You can see Bruce making eye contact with people way out in the crowd.

Iron Maiden formed in the late 70’s. Paul Dianno was their first mainstream singer but was fired after their second album and replaced by Bruce Dickinson who is singing this. The band was formed by bass player Steve Harris, along with guitarists Dave Murray and Adrian Smith and the drummer Clive Burr they went on to become a huge force in what was termed the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Clive was fired and replaced by the current drummer Nicko Mc Brain.
Bruce is a fully Qualified Airline Pilot, An Olympic grade Fencer once ranked 7th in the UK, A published Author of two novels plus writing his own biography called What does this button do?
On their last world tour Bruce piloted Ed Force One, the bands Boeing 747 jet all over the world.
He suffered from throat cancer and has since made a full recovery. He’s an amazing person. Iron Maiden are just part of Britain’s contribution to world music. A fantastic and iconic band.

Maiden almost always has a story in their songs. Sometimes it's of their own devising, like this one of a man going to be hanged. But often it's cribbed from some classic literary or historical source.
I find _Number of the Beast_ interesting and kind of funny in its source. Of course, there's the book of _Revelation,_ which you could easily assume to be the inspiration, but the direct inspiration for the lyrics was the poem _Tam o' Shanter,_ and nightmares Steve had after watching the second _Omen_ movie. :D

I first ran into Iron Maiden in 1980 when I was staying at my aunt for the summer in Germany. Soon after they hit America. Saw them in Oakland at Day On the Green in 1982 for this tour. RIP Clive.

Clive Burr (original drummer here) was incredible. His replacement Nico McBrain is AMAZING!! He makes the drums sing. Listen to this song or Rime of the Ancient Mariner on the Flight 666 video on UA-cam. Even more impressive when you realise he doesn't use a double kick drum pedal.

A few years later, Adrian Smith left the band for a few years, and Bruce, the lead singer, brought in Janik Gers from his solo band to fill the spot. Then Adrian came back and Janik instead of leaving in a huff, stayed and became the third guitarist. The best part is that all three of them can interchange between playing lead and rythem guitar from song to song... and as someone said, even between songs.
Their live shows are legendary with their mascot Eddie making an appearance during every show!

Brave New World in 2000 is the greatest comeback album in history. The band went through many variations over the years but for the 2000 album dickinson came back to vocals and they had all 3 of the best guitarists from their past.
The 3 staples that have been around for most, or all, the history of the band is:
Bass - Steve Harris. Does most of the writing and is the backbone of the band
Drums - Nicko Mcbrain. Sick drummer. very very well respected.
Lead Guitar - Dave Murray
Other 2 guitars in the current lineup is Adrian Smith and Janick Gers. All 3 guitarists are phenominal in their own right and have their own style. They all contribute to different songs in their own ways.

Iron Maiden Foreman 1975 they've had several lead singers but I do believe that Bruce Dickinson is the best and the live version of Hello by their name was in 1982 and he is just phenomenal the way he's able to hold that note and he never gets drowned out by the guitar riffs
