Good list. Sadly I have all these....It gets harder and harder to find quality TBS titles. Alot of developers are always switching genre's to action games these days (probably because they sell more.) and thats sad. I have zero respect for companies that do this. When I grab a new Dynasty Warriors, I dont want to pop it in and find its become a racing game....Same thing with established turn based series. I played the Demo for the newest one, and it seemed mildly interesting. Not really balanced enough. Lots of fairly small issues, too. Songs of Conquest (if you liked HOMM 3 you will like this) 2. Othercide (another well made game with the XCOM formula) 3. Endless Legend 4. Into the Breach
Hey good job on both videos! Totally agree with places of my all-time favourite games like Divinity Original Sin, Wasteland 3, Age of Wonders Planetfall and XCOM! You're really nailed it up. Was strange to miss Heroes of Might and Magic (along with King's Bounty) game series, as those were first TBS ever made. Regarding Pathfinder it was the worst experience I've ever had in video games. In all good previous games even if you're not familiar with them, you can play on harder difficulties and enjoy the game and challenge a lot! But Pathfinder... Let's say it straight, game on hard difficulties be like "1)cast fireball and roll dice 2) it isn't 20?> 3) reload the save". And it's just plain stupid. I want to play tactical game, I don't f****g want play luck and loading simulator, seriously, the part of game which take 15 minutes on casual will take over 6 damn hours on harder difficulties, because of loadings and constant resting. It's just probably the worst TBS I've ever played. I kinda can just go roll through whole game on casual without ever dying, but what's the point? Game doesn't reward you anything, it's just constant buffing, resting reloading between each battle, that's so tedious! And there like really no "tactical" part in that game at all. In Age of Wonders by doing smart moves you can win unfair battles, but in pathfinder regular creep can just 1x6 wipe your whole party.
Your lists are good, but I believe you really should have mentioned "Troubleshooter - Abandoned Children". Many people discard it as "Anime XCOM" but its combat system is far superior to XCOM and it has an excellent story with a lovable cast of characters.
I agree with this, Troubleshooters is one of the most criminally underrated games of this era - it's a bit rough on the edges (like some indie/passion projects can be) sometimes, and the art style is not for everyone, but the character customization options are the best in any game, period.
my opinion and amount of investment (casual - normal - hardcore): path of the righteous = too long +- 100h of gameplay and very difficult to understand mechanics + very long game makes extra playthru for a new class quite insane (hardcore) chronicles of valkyria = good game, but restart missions is necessary due to the point system that determines lvling up (casual) werhammer mechanicus = you should try it, was not on the list and is very good, promise you'll enjoy it (casual) wasteland 3 = combat isn't engrossing, storylines are very good, but combat does not feel intuitive or pleasing (normal) battle brothers = play with mods (search on youtube) , skill lvl required is same as Dark Souls 1 + you'll need a lot of tutorial videos (hardcore) divinity original sin 2 = very good, don't mind act 2 too much, it's the longest, and act 3 + 4 are totally worth it (normal) xcom2 = just epic, very good game (normal) warhammer 40k relics of war = good, but not that balanced, and very much feels like playing a tabletop game + a lot of dlc to buy (casual) king arthur's tale = made by a new studio and it is okayish, the new patches upped the difficulty lvl and made it more challenging (casual) I've played all of them and this is just my personal opinion.

What makes the banner saga not one of the top strategy games in my mind is the length to complete them. Each one was maybe 12 to 15 hours long. All 4 banner sagas might just be at 40 hours to beat which is too short being that it’s 3 games. I had to pay a game price for each banner saga so I would say it’s really not worth it unless you can get all 3 games for one low price.
not sure if battletech got a mention same as xcom play the OG then install the mod Rogutech Treadnought, its longwar for Battletech but you must have a decent computer to run it otherwise its slow
A very respectable list. However, I would've put Solasta above Pathfinder, PoE2, and BG3. Despite being lower quality in some respects, its tbs tactical layer is superior to these titles, imo.
Nice list. I am surprised Gladius is not more popular. That game is fantastic and I don't even think most 4x fans know it exists. Not on the list that I probably would find room for: Gears Tactics and the new, but very good, WH40K Chaos Gate Daemonhunters.
I was reluctant to buy Gladius for months. My first impression was that it was just another Civ type game. I finally took a chance and it is an awesome game. I'm usually a 'base game' guy and rarely buy DLCs for games. I'd rather play a new game than sink more money into slight variations of games I've already played. Not Gladius, have all the races and over 1k hours played. Excellent game.
Surprised that Jupiter Hell didn't make the list. One of the best turn-based tactical RPGs I've ever played, features a kickass heavy metal soundtrack. Worth a look. Other honorable mentions are Shattered Pixel Dungeon and Shattered Planet (unrelated despite the names) as well as Loop Hero, which is a weirdly good take on the intersection of idle-RPGs and turn-based strategic RPGs.
If you make a list of the best turn-based strategy games and don't include Heroes of Might Magic 3 in this list, then I can't take this list seriously. The game by far is one the best games for PC ever written and still enjoyable almost 25 years later, and you don't even mention a classical game that most of these games are built upon.

No Into the Breach? Why? Into the Breach on 1st place for me. In this game, everything is so simple and fair. No random. Into the Breach is an almost perfect tactical game.
Man, I m sure you are proud of your in between titles animation, but nobody got time to wait for a "loading" widget, It's a dislike and see you next time from me.
I'm still pissed at Epic/Phoenix Point for poaching a CROWDFUNDED game for exclusivity... but I also played a bit of it when I had 3 months of Games Pass that came free with my new laptop. It's trash. It's boring. The story SUCKS, the characters are nearly non-existent, and the gameplay has ONE gimmick but still isn't as good as XCOM. not only should it not be so high on this list, imo it shouldn't be on the list at all.
I'm sorry but Pathfinder, while it is great if played in RT with pause, feels chunky and slow if played in turn-based mode, and it really struggles to shine. It looks like a real time mechanics game adapted to turn-based mechanics (a bit like Pillars of Eternity 2), and while it is totally playable, I would struggle to say that it's one the best of the genre. A game like Disciples: Liberation, with all its evident defects, in terms of turn-based battles evidently overcomes Pathfinder. This says a lot about the fun that the latter could provide to anyone who wants to play it entirely in turn-based mode. My humble piece of advice: if you want fun turn-based battles, play Urtuk instead of Pathfinder.
Well, I've disabled RT in P:WOTR, and never used it (ok, "tavern", I know, but even there I've played most of the time in the TB mode). Had a dozens of hours of the TB delicious play to the moment ). What do u mean by "slow"? Isn't a greatest fun is when u spend an hour or two for a single battle?
While I appreciate the video and own/like most of these, half of the games in this list aren't considered in the strategy genre. Instead they're considered RPG games. Virtually every game takes strategy to win so you could argue that they should be included, it seems odd to me to ignore core genres when choosing games. In that regard, you could consider Championship Manager a turn-based strategy game. As for the list there are notable turn-based genres that were entirely ignored. There's not one wargame listed in the series like Order of Battle, Panzer General or the like - wargames helped define the turn-based genre. Nor are any of the turn-based space MOO-type clones listed which again seems to be an oversight. We're kind of missing some wide swaths of typical turn-based strategy games here. Total War isn't really turn-based, so that goes against the whole theme of the video. Finally, I'd suggest checking out Endless Legend, a very good turn-based 4X game - probably the best one outside of the Civ series.
I'm only make the list based on a general or casual concept of the "turn-based strategy", for me as long as the game have a turn based mechanic then it is a turn based strategy game. Maybe you have your own "special" definition and thats okay :) P.S : I haven't played the game that you mentioned, gonna give them a try :D
@@JoelRPG I don't want to belabor the point but just because it's turn-based doesn't make it a strategy game. That's like calling the Friday The 13th movies Rom-Coms because they both involve pretty girls on romantic dates. Words/genres have meanings and much of what you listed are considered Role Playing Games. That's not a "casual" concept of turn based strategy. The only commonality is that these games are turn based, a game mechanic that can apply to all sorts of genres of games. Anyway, thanks for the video.
@@waltblackadar4690 Hmm interesting. I'm pretty sure i'm not the only one who thinks that these games are considered as a Turn-based Strategy, but sure i'll keep that in mind :)
@@waltblackadar4690 i can’t think of many “turn based “ games where the player doesn’t strategize between turns. Maybe if there was a game that did not allow player interaction except to advance to the next turn,. I just don’t know of any like that. All turn based I know encourage player strategy.
@@Tubalcain422 That's exactly my point. Any game, even Pac Man, has strategy. "Turn-based strategy" is a genre of games and not just a mechanic - and many of the games listed are not considered part of that genre. They're RPGs. Calling Pathfinder a TBS game isn't really correct any more than someone would call Minesweeper a TBS. So labeling the video as 15 turn-based strategy games is a bit misleading.
@@JoelRPG Well cool, don't take a supportive advice then. Most people don't watch intros of top 10 lists and don't read the description - i telling u this after 14 years of content creating. U simply missing views by choice with this "conscious" viewer misleading title, which actually telling about u as well, how much accurate information you want to give to your audience. U simply dont. Not even in the avatar. Well, i prefer honesty from my fellow creators. Yeah, it matters.
I'm not frustrated or anything, I just find it bizzare to put Jagged Alliance 2 that low, especially if the same list has XCOM 2, and somehow XCOM 2 higher. I bet the graphic has a lot of things to do with it, because if we were to dive into them JA2 alone surpasses every XCOM game, combined and even modded. If JA2 modded then it's GG for the whole TBT genre.

Why do you include early-access games?
Maybe you have your own "special" definition and thats okay :)
P.S : I haven't played the game that you mentioned, gonna give them a try :D
Divinity: Original Sin 2 is good
yes, thats why i put it on the part 1 :)
@@JoelRPG Thats why you should put "part 2" to the title.
@@RetroShock19 no :)
@@JoelRPG Well cool, don't take a supportive advice then. Most people don't watch intros of top 10 lists and don't read the description - i telling u this after 14 years of content creating. And EVEN I did not realized, ur video was a part 2, becouse i clicked instantly to the first one. U simply missing views by choice with this "conscious" viewer misleading title, which actually telling about u as well, how much accurate information you want to give to your audience. U simply dont. Not even in the avatar. Well, i prefer honesty from my fellow creators. Yeah, it matters.
@@RetroShock19 hmm i'm saying a "no" just for a joke, i'm actually considered to use part 2 to the title :)
King Arthur is out.
Where is warhammer 40k mechanicus and warhammer 40k chaos gate daemon hunters
mechanicus is also good, and i havent played chaos gate daemon hunters yet :)
@@JoelRPGchaos gate is still early acces but major kill did an rewiew on it and its arleady amazing
where is urtuk?
Baldurs Gate is a disaster. It's nothing like the classic games.
GOTY across multiple review platforms keep seething

I'm not frustrated or anything, I just find it bizzare to put Jagged Alliance 2 that low, especially if the same list has XCOM 2, and somehow XCOM 2 higher. I bet the graphic has a lot of things to do with it, because if we were to dive into them JA2 alone surpasses every XCOM game, combined and even modded.
If JA2 modded then it's GG for the whole TBT genre.
hola campeon , te falto los vinculos a las paginas para localizar los game. , asi serias un ganador de sucriptores.
So civiliazation here. but they steal many content from Endless Space 2 and Endless legend Turn based games. And this games a realy good.
You need to work on your pronunciation
indeed :)
It was fine. I've met native speakers that are less comprehensible.
You need to work on your manners. He probably speaks more languages than you.
