The steel helmet actually was quite a precise replica of the WWII German M40 "Stahlhelm" Helmet, in fact it looked as if the thickness of the steel was similar to the original. As some metal detectorists proved by finding originals, those didn't stop a bullet as well - they, as the kevlar helmets used by the German Army of today, were designed to deflect stray shrapnel and ricocheted bullets and protect from everything that has the ability to fall down on the soldiers 😂

    • @bluscout1857

so basically both this helmet and the M40 weren’t made to stop a actual bullet and were made to just lightly protect the users head from scars

Then again, I read an anti-gun paper once that claimed a .177 pellet gun firing at 1100 fps was "as powerful as a .45 handgun." So by that logic, the vest should be able to stop a .45!

In the western sectors, that became the BRD, an army (BW) was only reinstated in 1955, and I think i remember roundish, american-style helmets in photographs, although they did make the very first uniforms out of WW II surplus printed cloth (tents, i think. Horribly uncomfortable).
The fire brigades did wear the re-used "coal bucket" style helmets, painted white, and with an added piece of leather in the back for neck protection and a plexiglas visor, I remember very well. It took years until I realized that the iconic firebrigade helmet was really the infamous WWII Wehrmacht helmet painted over. They wore them well into the 90´s.

Fire-Brigades and THW still use the M42 model and Schuberth still produces it under the F120 or F130 number, though it seems fire brigades begin to switch to the Schuberth F220 or Rosenbauer HEROS model.

1:47 a 9mm 115 grain bullet travelling at 1,180 feet per second/360 meters per second produces 481 Joules of energy. the vest shown at the beginning can only withstand "24 Joules"
9mm parabellum is used as a "control" assuming that most americans will be carrying an 9mm pistol.
    2:38 a 30-06 150 gr bullet @ 400 yrds produces 1,636 joules of kinetic energy.
as a general rule, military helmets are not designed to withstand even small calibre bullets. their main purpose is to protect the head of a user from fragments and debris.
