Seeing just how poorly things would go against modern firearms would be interesting.
That isn't why mail was abandoned... Mail fell out of popularity much earlier than the advent of firearms. Mail is just very expensive to make compared to plate. The plague in 1350 killed a significant portion of the workforce, and mail became even more expensive to make. At the same time, water powered hammers came into use, which drove costs for plate armour down. A breastplate could be made within 6 hours. One thing about chainmail is that it is only truly effective when worn over some type of clothing. I don't speak from real experience of course but the History Channel taught me many things about arms & armor.
True without some sort of padding the rings would just dig in to you. That however is nowhere close to proper mail. Copper is very soft and easily punctured by something like the tomahawk so it’s not the right material. Material choice aside it should still be able to turn a blade and prevent cuts. I think its biggest weakness is that it is likely butted mail, where the ring is just pinched together, nowhere near functional and can be ripped apart with your hands. Real mail would be made of flatter rings with the rings alternating between being a solid ring and one that is riveted together so lighter and much stronger.
Usually you would wear a gambeson or some sort of padded vest under your chainmail. It makes it more comfortable to wear and should give more protection.
the way your wheat/grass kept growing in your mouth had me not only captivated, but excited, focused, and ready and hardened to learn. thank you for this amazing demonstration and precise tutorial and learning video for education.
For those non-enginerd types out there: Sintered carbides: Very hard metal powder fused into solid shapes. UHMWPE: Ultra high molecular weigh polyethylene. Basically really durable but still semi-flexible plastic. Honeywell spectra: Super high strength fibers similar to kevlar.
I noticed the mysterious cinematic mode never happens when the shooter is carrying a 22 credit card gun. Scott might find that helpful next time he’s there.
I have a life card its terrible to aim but I keep it loaded with snake shot and carry a regular pew pew boy but anyways its so easy to carry you don't even realize you have it so why not
Elastomeric is like a caulking material that self levels to fill in cracks and hardens like a rubber. It is commonly used to fill in voids from concrete cracks or saw cuts to keep moisture out.
I'm so glad you used hand tools on that chain mail and gave it a fair showing. Also, felt a little like OG demo ranch days. Well done and thanks for the content.
It wasn't a fair showing though. Chainmail wasn't used to stop blunt attacks like that. It was to protect from slashes and shit from swords. Honestly I feel bad for the guy who made it. Felt super disrespectful the way he treated that dudes absurd amount of hard and beautiful work. I know he went it in willingly, but he broke the shit out of it with irrelevant shit before even shooting it and even threw it away to the side after. It was literally like a piece of art. Poor dude.
As someone who has looked into dragon scale and *exactly* why it failed, I'm not sure this would be better. It might even be worse. The main reason dragon scale failed was because the glue they were using to hold it together didn't work in adverse conditions... Spectra actually has the same problem (though different conditions, the ones it has problems with are just as likely.) Plus I'm not sure how well a woven approach would work.
@@SirSpence99 Thanks for the info, I’ve always heard of dragon skin in a glorifying light and that it’s this flawless design but never hear about the flaws in it’s design. i still am impressed that someone put in that much effort tho.
@@Oystercaulk To be fair, I did it for business reasons. The entire situation was pretty nuts actually. Basically, the military got a hold of the armor, did some testing, it failed *all* of their adverse conditions tests (temp test, chemical test a couple others, conditions they expect the average armor to experience) so they passed that around and told soldiers that the armor failed their tests. The company that made dragonscale got a hold of this and decided to go to the press and talk about how the military designed tests to make their armor fail. Then, in retaliation the army released the test results that showed not only had they done a more than fair test, the armor was dangerous for civilian use. They also at that point changed internal rules to prevent soldiers from using non-certified armor. Then, for some strange reason, the company that made dragonscale was sold three times within the next 2 years and from what I can tell, the patent was allowed to expire.
Is it "sealant" or closer to "thermal paint" for roofing? Personally haven't played with that specifically, but I did have a guy try to use buckets of thermal paint as cheap caulking for nails. Might have worked if it had been applied like paint, but didn't do chit when dabbed like caulking. I make the comparison because the thermal stuff seemed more like slightly thick latex paint rather than a "sealant" of any kind. Regardless, that stuff seemed like more of the outer coat on a hard plate armor. Might have caught some extra particles but not stopping squat. Might have been a good material for a top coat on the mask?
@@outcast170 I guess that depends how you use it. It’s sold as a sealant and actually some places consider a coating a new roof.. I rarely ever use them because I really don’t have any faith. I’ve used them and had success on a low scale. But I think if it was thick enough in between hard layers it could be effect in stopping catch the broken bullet.
I would say that copper vest is definitely worth a gift of some sort for the amount of work put in. That is dedication if I must say, and worth a few dollars down the scrap yard. What is it about $6-7 a kilo in the USA
Interesting thing about chain mail, is that it's actually like 100x stronger if the links are all welded/riveted. The axe and hammer might have done almost nothing if the links were all sealed. This all said, I do not think it would have stopped even a .22lr
Copper links were the biggest issue with it. I've worn, partied, and fought in a variety of mail and can assure you that that's party mail. It's very pretty and he did great work but I wouldn't wear it even in a rattan stick fight. All that said, I would love to see some actual mail make it out to Matt
Problem with ringmail is they dont have any resistance to impact injury, due to their extreme flexibility. Sure that dull broadsword didnt slice through the ringmail, but the death by internal bleeding when your organs rupture and go into shock will still get you. There isnt a weave or material you can make it out of and survive the concussive impact of even a 308 round.
@@wendiplays Bruh a sword isn't going to rupture your organs. Mail is flexible, but vastly less flexible than normal fabric. It will definitely take some of the punch out of it. Not to mention you're likely not going to be wearing mail on it's own. You're likely wearing some form of textile armour over the mail, which will distribute the force over a much larger area. You'll be fine. If you don't believe me, just take a look at any medievel reenactment. Those swords are blunt, but still carry the same energy as a sharp one. In fact, they're generally a fair bit heavier. Reenactors would be dead if their organs ruptured upon being hit.
This has probably been said by many other people, but I was told that chainmail is specifically designed to stop slashing motions. Stabbing and large blunt force are effective weapons against chainmail. As shown in this perfectly well-done video.
Matt- just wanted to say that Mark would be so proud and happy for everything you've accomplished, both with this channel and off the ranch. I'm sure he's looking down smiling on you and your family
@@robertsears8323 it has worked for hundreds of years. Just because wearing the particular vest in the video would be worse than wearing nothing because it is dead weight for no protection does not mean chain mail does not work. That copper “mail” can be ripped apart by hand because the links are simply pinched together. Real mail would have been made out of iron or steel, using alternating flatter solid and riveted rings so lighter and much stronger. Real mail prevents cutting, therefore it is effective armour even to this day. Yes you are still vulnerable to blunt force and things that have a particularly vicious point and obviously bullets but it would still be more protective in a modern knife attack than anything we have today. Yes you are not invulnerable even in real mail, but no armour makes you invulnerable. Is a plate carrier useless because you can be shot in the head?

I think its biggest weakness is that it is likely butted mail, where the ring is just pinched together, nowhere near functional and can be ripped apart with your hands. Real mail would be made of flatter rings with the rings alternating between being a solid ring and one that is riveted together so lighter and much stronger.
Usually you would wear a gambeson or some sort of padded vest under your chainmail. It makes it more comfortable to wear and should give more protection.
You’re correct. Arrowtips for example can poke through the rings and the gambeson will keep them from poking you
@@thealpaca8hay I thought it was typically worn over some type of padded clothing. Wasn't sure of the name though, thanks for the info 👍

Elastomeric is like a caulking material that self levels to fill in cracks and hardens like a rubber. It is commonly used to fill in voids from concrete cracks or saw cuts to keep moisture out.
I've only ever used it on metal. Like gutters or tin roofing.

Poor dude.
I'm surprised not to see more comments on that dragon scale. That was true ingenuity. Has a bright future ahead of him.
Same!
exactly same here! he actually sent something in that’s of commercial quality that he produced himself.
Elastomeric is a roofing sealant. Doesn’t work very well at least in Florida. But I’ve seen 5 gallon buckets harden and it’s made me think
how many buckets will stop a bullet?
@@jacobkrout1627 that’s a question only Matt could answer

Interesting thing about chain mail, is that it's actually like 100x stronger if the links are all welded/riveted. The axe and hammer might have done almost nothing if the links were all sealed. This all said, I do not think it would have stopped even a .22lr
Also, copper isn't really a good idea for a chain mail
Copper links were the biggest issue with it. I've worn, partied, and fought in a variety of mail and can assure you that that's party mail.
It's very pretty and he did great work but I wouldn't wear it even in a rattan stick fight.
All that said, I would love to see some actual mail make it out to Matt
@@Lithui Todds workshop maille?
Hey Matt, its been awhile since we've seen trick shots and contraptions. We love all your content! Keep up the good work

This has probably been said by many other people, but I was told that chainmail is specifically designed to stop slashing motions. Stabbing and large blunt force are effective weapons against chainmail. As shown in this perfectly well-done video.

DORK ALERT!!!
In real chainmail the links are also riveted not just bend which keeps them from opening ..... and they are made of steel but you know
Chainmail will never work as any kind of body armor. The person that made it should be very ashamed.
@@Asbitos agreed
