normal for soda to separate like that because the water will freeze before syrup does, especially if its freezing from the colder section of the fridge vs. an actual freezer with much lower temps shouldn't be harmful unless they were already spoiled
This is the answer. To clarify more, when the H2O part freezes first, it floats to the top (think iceberg effect). Then during defrosting, the syrup and additives thaw before the H2O and sink to the bottom below the remnant "iceberg". Finally that thaws too, but now due to the viscosity difference between water and syrup they remain separated until enough force and/or agitation is introduced to bring them back together.
@@christopherarrington3904when you put them in the freezer, do you allow them to freeze through? And then place them into the fridge to allow slow thawing? If so, glance at my other comment here to see why they separate.
I work for a soda company and it is a phase separation of the C02, water and syrup used to produce the product. The one thing that might happen is it may release the C02 when you open it so it may taste flat. That is what happens when they freeze but it should still be fine to drink.
At our local Coke factory in Adelaide, Australia the coke syrup concentrate was delivered from the mother ship in 12 gallon plastic screw top jugs then mixed with local purified water before bottling, by gently over chilling it you have caused the water to separate out leaving the higher density syrups still liquid. Much like cheap anti freeze. You now have great pickling solution for metal cleaning.
real sugar is used EVERYWHERE except the US. no where else uses fake sugar for Coke. I think its hilarious that Americans think its something so different and they have to go somewhere else to get something that's normal ALL over the world, except them lol
It’s because high fructose corn syrup is so cheap to manufacture. That’s why it’s in everything and it seems like since everyone started using it more. People have contracted diabetes because the body can’t process the artificial sweetener but that’s just my opinion.😊
-@@MK-fy3vl- high fructose corn syrup is,in fact, processed by the human body, but by the liver, not the intestines, so it can cause cirrhosis- like symptoms if used in high quantities

Syrup and water freeze at different temps. I'm sure the back of the bottle froze just enough while the front of the bottle never did and caused the separation. Don't tell Marjorie Taylor Green, she'll think it's a sign.
The sugary/syrupy part has fallen out of suspension because water and syrup used to mix have slightly different freezing points... it froze slowly, so it had time to separate. The cola will be fine to drink, but won't have much fizz left. BTW... these bottles could've also exploded! Chances are when you pop those bottles it will be quite violent... so I urge you to record it for our pleasure!
I had a couple 710mL plastic bottles of Coke (Canadian) in the fridge and they were fine. I've never seen that before😲 Maybe it was the eclipse😜or maybe it was spiked with Tequilla😆
Funny you put AMSOIL in your truck which is top quality oil, but you put that 😳 in your body. It very well could have ethenol in it? Use the Coke for cleaning battery terminals or degreasing your engine. The bubbly water is probably a better choice, but what's in it? I don't know what made you so sick, but I think I would be throwing out anything like that after what you went through. We are glad you are doing much better 🙏👍
Mexican Coke is made with Cane Sugar. Maybe that’s why the water separated with cola syrup. Not highly processed like US Coca-Cola with high fructose sugar
Got a “Sparkling Ice” brand drink from CVS last week that was literally ice (frozen) and it was separated the same way… colored on the bottom (orange, in this case), clear on the top. It was fine.
In Canadian coke which uses Sugar Cane like the Mexican Coke it does the same thing once it has been frozen in a glass bottle. I've noticed that American coke which uses High Fructose Corn Syrup instead doesn't have that happen in the glass bottles. (My uncle works for Coke so we are fans of various types etc.). Hope that helps...
Shake it and it's fine. Fountain soda literally mixes inside your cup as it pours by design... Theres two nozzles, one from the syrup bib and one from the carbonated water.
I"ve got no idea, don't drink soda. Wife used to, but only in cans. The below comment makes sense to me, about the water freezing different than the syrup. Try rotating the bottle, gently, to get it mixed again. No, don't shake it... lol
The water freezes first, concentrating the sugars into what's left. That higher sugar content sinks to bottom and ice floats on top. Then, when it thaws the ice melts leaving relatively clear top part. Same thing happens when collecting maple sap to make maple syrup. It's called the poor man's RO because it concentrates the sugars in the sap without you having to do anything except throw out the ice! Shake it back up and you should be good to go.
System was not properly flushed during the last fluid exchange, just pop the cap and change the filter in the bonnet, shake for a couple minutes, top off the fluid level and it should be good for another 3000 miles.
Shake it up! Should be fine, just as long as I'm not in the room when you open it. Always be sure to point the bottle toward your face while opening for safety. Hi Al Gor-Rhythm.
My coworker has a plastic bottle when they did manes on them. It's about 10 years old. Been sitting on his tool box unopened all this time. It's now completely clear and bottle is deformed.
The bottle shape doesn't look correct for coca cola. I think that may be fake coke. Water freezes at 32, the sugar and color, etc. could have acted like anti-freeze, and not being jostled could have allowed them to remain separated. The bottle still looks funny for a coke bottle.
To see if said bottles may have undergone a molecular transformation, pour wife unit a glass of said mixture and observe closely. If after 2 hours wife unit has no observable abnormalities then drink freely. Cheers🎉
I used to time mine to just before freezing so when i opened them they would have tiny ice crystals and it would be perfect, of course some went to far and occasionally ( like 4 time total ) they seperated, i just slowly spun the bottle to mix it back up and i got 3 flat and 1 decent one out of them. That said, I haven't had a soda in about 12 years now and dont really miss them.
What you are seeing is the phenomenon of how fresh water Arctic ice is formed from salt water Arctic sea water. Basically, the freezing process forces all of the "pollutants" out of the water. I use this process to remove chloride and fluoride out of tap water with my freezer to make pure drinking water. Put 3 quarts of tap water in a gallon milk jug, freeze it for 2 days, take it out and let it sit at room temperature for 2 hours, then pour off the water that has melted into a glass and taste it. You'll be surprised how salty and nasty it is compared to tap water. Let the rest of the ice in the jug melt and you'll find it tastes like fresh spring water.
Likely similar to how people make Apple Jack. As the bottle freezes, any ice floats to the top, which serves as a nucleation site for more ice crystals to form. As the liquid water content in the soda mix decreases, the syrup gets thicker and denser and sinks to the bottom. Once they unfreeze, the syrup is still denser so its sits at the bottom while all the relatively cleaner water stays at the top. I’d be curious if they re-homogenize after a couple weeks…
Yeah frozen soda and sparkling water will do this. I work for the company that makes the Sparkling Ice drinks. We have to be careful when we ship them out on cold nights
Mexican soda has real cane sugar not high fructose corn syrup so that's why the do that. HFCS makes them stable longer on the shelf. Cause if you actually think about how long it takes a product to go from production line to shelf & has to last two weeks beyond its crazy
Normal that is why they put hydrogenated vegetable oil in the drinks to prevent the separation ( even Gatorade Which they have started removing it). If you ever watch the manufacturing and bottling, they are jseperated when first bottled and just needs a little shake to mix it up
Not a chemical change. Nothing wrong with it (though it may be flat now) just gently mix it and it'll taste fine. As it froze the water excluded the syrup, then as the ice melted the pure water stayed on top of the far denser syrup solution.
Once a cola (any brand) freezes and then thaws, that separation happens. My experience is that if you manage to remix it the result is so flattened (from loss of carbonation) that it’s not enjoyable. Perhaps if you recarbonated it but that’s a lot of bother for a bottle of pop.

This is normal ... as the liquid slowly cools down the water (only the water) freezes to ice and the rest of the liquid keeps all the rest of the stuff like sugar coloring etc in the liquid state, and it start to be more and more saturated. This is actually used to concentrate ethyl alcohol in booze removing the ice crystals makes the remaining part "stronger". Of course at certain concentration no more ice will form. The same thing happened to me with lemonade. I think everyone is right that it has to do with the sugar depressing the freezing point (the water separates out and freezes, and rises to the top, while the sugar syrup stays liquid at the bottom. I don’t know if it will be drinkable though.
ice have different density of water and other components, when ice melted the water get separated of the sugar and coloran, simply mix them and nothing is wrong.
Actually that's fine if you allow it to sit for an hour and let the CO2 get reabsorbed into the liquid. Shaking a sealed and unopened bottle of soda will not raise the pressure.
I remember this being a thing when I was a kid and people would try to make ice pops out of coke in the summer. We also had a 10 cent bottle coke machine at work that iced up and did that. Brought back some old memories.
It's not really so much of a chemical reaction as it is a physical process from freezing. The water in the coke has a higher freezing temperature than the caramel syrup does, When it freezes the water molecules cling together easily and rise to the top once they form ice crystals. When it thaws out, the water is less dense than the syrup and floats on the top.
I heard that Mexico has switched to high fructose corn syrup due to the high cost of cane sugar. Better check the ingredients. Some bottles may use the same sweetener we do in the U.S.
