@thekeepr it's literally Capitalism. They're trying to do whatever they can to drain your bank account by making the user experience as inconvenient as possible
For 12 dollars a month you probably can supoort directly 2 or 3 artists in patreon that do wallpapers. Or spend those 50 dollars in a commission for a great wallpaper every year.
The reason the side of the screen is black is just my monitor that's in front of the camera. Normally I move it out of the way when I record at my desk but since I was doing a lot of stuff on my computer, I needed the monitor close by. Sorry if it's annoying.
Not annoying at all. Btw, I want to say how much I appreciate the video you reference here where you talked about Amazon breaking comixology. I downloaded it to my phone a few months ago when I had surgery, along with a few other videos, and it made my hospital stay genuinely pleasant. I can't tell you enough how much that means to me or how much long hospital wait time before a surgery can otherwise be rough. Thank you.
While it is true that I don't really care about tech reviews, I just enjoy to listen to your thoughts on stuff. And hey, I didn't really care for Scooby do before but that changed dramatically for some reason so, who knows?
honestly love watching videos where it's people talking about stuff i don't care about, like yesss tell me all about this thing that is so vastly outside of my interests
Are people really changing their wallpapers like non-stop?? I've had the same shit on mine for yearsssssss. And it's just photos I've made . . . You telling me there's a market for this?? The phone screen that is only visible when it's idle, but before it goes to sleep? The Picture you can only view in between app icons, in between switching apps??? WHY???
I change mine if I get new interests, like if I’m really into Dragon Ball I’ll have a Dragon Ball one for a couple of months. I don’t use an app though, I just use Google or make my own
I’ve been using the same photo since 2014, with no plans to change. And if I were to change it, I’d use a new picture that I took - I’m not buying a wallpaper!
I change mine if I am in the mood or want to see something different. I used to be a Windows Phone user and I used to change the theme colour daily. Everyone is different.
In the past 10 years, I have had two wallpapers so obviously I’m not the target demographic for this app. In a vacuum this app is unoffensive because that’s kinda where most apps are nowadays. But after watching most of Marques’ videos and podcasts, a lot of this does feel very hypocritical. If him and the team have dreams and aspirations for their app, then great! But the current pricing and user experience should be reflective of what’s available now.
Why not make an app actually relevant to his channel? Like, some kind of app/browser extension that lets you see trusted reviews for tech stuff when shopping for them online or something? So bizarre.
ya ... the team talk about photography so much you would think it would be relevant to have a collection of there best photos for phone backgrounds that have personally taken... but are they even in the list of the artists you need 5 to follow?
I- don't know any internet user that would buy backgrounds for 50 dollars. When you can also just go on any social media, find your fav artist, and be like "hey mind if I use this for a personal desktop background?" and they'll probably be like "yea sure" or maybe "I have a bundle of wallpapers on my site for 5 dollar" I use wallpapers from Pikaole (artist) and give them 8 dollars on patreon every month... and that's for tons of wallpapers, icons, and physical merch. I bet you can find a fav artist w/ a patreon with like access to tons of wallpapers for like 5 dollars.
Well technically his app is less then 5 dollars a month if you think about it .. 5 dollars a month times 12 is 60 dollars.. so yeah technically it's less then 5 dollars a month 🤷🏽♂️
@@yordytorres5675 Idk where my original reply went :/ but its 12 a month as he says in the video. It's only 50 if you have that money up front to pay out of the gate. vs handing over 5 dollars to your fav artist, download all their current wallpapers they have on their patreon, and then just cancel your subscription.
Hell, wallpapers are usually given out for free as a form of marketing. There's tons of high quality wallpapers given out by videogame companies and such.
I feel like the audience they are trying to target aren't so much "internet users" as they are "tech enthusiasts". Like, the people who buy hardware a lot because it Looks nicer irl, but doesn't actually want to spend a lot of time interacting with software, so they are theoretically willing to pay that much for the "convenience" of this app.. with the convenience being that they don't have to research wallpaper apps, because they trust Marques, so if he says it's his app and it's good, then they don't have to think further about it, if that makes sense (Also just to be clear, I am not one of those people, but I do see a lot of people like that in tech youtubers comment sections)
Why doesn't the app just let you pay like 50c for a wallpaper? Add an option to buy an artist's catalogue or a pack of wallpapers for like 5$ They get their money and don't have to worry about this stupid subscription model. If people like using the app they'll spend more money on it, incessant ads are not the way chief.
Scott...I will watch you talk about anything. Literally. Like, let's be clear I came for Scooby Doo...but I stay for Youby You. Serve us more random internet drama!!!
I do follow tech tubers. Specifically GN and a handful of other more technical types. That app is as you said… bonkers. Maybe he has been driving too many million dollar cars to realize $50 is not chump change for the average American. That represents 2-3 hours of work for most.
As soon as he said tech UA-camr, GN came to mind. With all due respect to MKBHD, GN has far better information on tech. And Mrwhosetheboss is my preferred source for phone reviews. So I don't even watch MKBHD very much.
@@sugarfrosted2005 it's a niche market. Some people will pay artists for their work rather just downloading a copy somewhere else. There are things that they do to fix though. Don't allow the artist to upload previous artwork they've had for free, it should be unique/exclusive to the app.
I'm shocked the guy that reviews Lamborghini's and Cybertrucks is out of touch. More Scooby-Doo sfx would make your drama videos sing, I liked the small amount you included.
From my experience, most people use a photo in their gallery as a wallpaper or they download something off of google images, I don't see many (if any) people asking for an app. People can find images with a higher resolutions than 1080p pretty easily
Yh pretty much also wallpapers apps are nothing new ,there are a lot of wallpapers apps that are free ,also like you said you can get free 4k wallpapers on the internet
I think it varies from country to country, that's why it pays to use a VPN when signing up for subscription services, you can save a lot of money that way. In Slovakia, I pay €7.19 a month for YT Premium + YT Music, with the family plan costing about €10. I am sure I'd be able to get the price even lower if I set my location to some middle eastern country, for example. Price of the subscription won't change when you revert your location back to normal, I tested this. Even worked in the US, when I worked there a few months back I still paid only €5 a month for Spotify premium.
If anything, this will definitely change how I see him. He's always seemed so down-to-earth and personable in his videos, and while I'll still enjoy his stuff, the fact that he developed this app and agreed to this pricing schema and user experience will make me question his sense of pricing and valuement of work for the foreseeable future.
Come on he made his first app and now you change how you see him? do better than that. People love to hate on people who try and do better things yes the price is expensive but people pay only fans models 1000 dollars per month.
@YTYogaFlame24 the problem is that most ppl don't pay OF models 1000 dollars a month. In addition, OF models have two different pay tiers. Panels only have a monthly and yearly subscription deal. Sure, this app is for a niche audience, but it is clearly a cash grab.
@@YTYogaFlame24I'm a game developer and have helped develop multiple pieces of software. I absolutely understand how you can get in your own head with the amount of effort and work that these types of things take, but I don't think there's any universe in which I charge such an astronomical sum of money for an app. In fact, all of my current work was developed and priced free BECAUSE I'm learning and I don't know what I'm doing. I'm growing! That's part of the process!! While Marques is clearly still an excellent reviewer, he also clearly doesn't have a reasonable perspective of finances anymore, and that's good for me, as a financially rocky person, to know while watching his reviews and his perspectives on pricing.
@YTYogaFlame24 at least they get feet lol. This is $50 for something you can get not only for free, I can screenshot your comment and use that as a wallpaper. Now that would be weird of me, but it's hard to describe how free visuals are on the internet. It's more available than the air we breathe.
People are ridiculous. How can you act like you know his true character? He’s delivered perfection for over a decade, but one slip-up and suddenly he isn't a down to earth person? Hope you don't hold everyone to those same impossible standards.
1:49 I was assuming the price was because they were giving artists a lot of the money they deserve but 50/50 feels like a cash grab 70/30 would be much more reasonable
@@ccayco I’m someone who does both. On my desktop or laptop I’ll go around the internet and download wallpapers and set them that way. However, I have also bought wallpaper apps before, Backdrops and Vellum to be specific. I like having them because they’re easier to access, have a large variety, are sorted into logical groups…. They’re a lot more convenient when on a phone, I guess. Those apps weee both one-time purchases, though. I really like MKBHD in general but I think this launch was insane, $12/month is highway robbery. Or $50/year. Either way is ridiculous, especially when the app is kinda crummy compared to the other two I mentioned (which, again, were one-time purchases).
Because someone realized there are people inept enough using phones who can't do anything that an app isn't telling or showing them while holding their hands. As ridiculous as it sounds we are living in a time with more technology than ever and at the same time a vast majority of the people using the tech have absolutely no idea how even the basics work. And it's not just elderly peoply but all ages.
When you first exclaimed "12 dollars a month for wallpapers?!?!" in the first 3 seconds of the video, I thought you were talking about real wallpapers for your house. Even that doesn't make any sense, because who changed their wallpapers often enough for that to be remotely worth it? But somehow paying that much for digital wallpapers sounds even more bonkers.
Yh if it was actual an art app where you could buy artist painting that would have been more interesting ,but even then having a subscription wouldn’t have make sense ,it would make sense however to pay for the artist directly, like a auction .But having an art app where you can buy artist painting could have been great ,small artist creators could have the chance to get their name out there and most people wouldn’t have any issue with it .
I'm a first time watcher who is subbed to Nebula and actually saw your video come up in my feed there! After watching, I immediately had to come here to upvote. I'm in the tech space, but prefer to stay out of any kind of drama until someone I trust makes a video or post breaking things down for me. 😅 I think I avoid a lot of toxicity that way- I get to understand the controversy without having to wade through all the muck myself, if you get me. Anyway, you have a new subscriber! I may be one of few people who watched purely for the topic (and to support smaller creators on Nebula). And if I hadn't seen this video first, you might never have ended up on my radar, because your other content isn't the type of thing that would normally grab my attention/interest. (No offense meant!) But I like the vibes you seem to have curated here on your channel, and thought you were funny and entertaining. So I'll stick around! And give your other videos a try; I think there's a strong possibility that I'll find plenty I enjoy, even if the topic doesn't seem like it'd overlap with my normal interests. Maybe I'll even pick up some new interests as a result, who knows! 😊 (As an aside, you remind me a bit of Hbomberguy... If he were younger, happier, American, and had fully embraced his hair situation. 😂 I don't know if that makes sense to you, but I mean it as a compliment! Because you also strike me as the kind of person who can take any topic that interests you, and your enthusiasm will be contagious enough to draw other people in. For example, I watched his 2-hour long video essay on the origin of the Roblox "oof" sound, which I would not have been REMOTELY interested in otherwise- because I knew from his previous content that he can make literally anything entertaining and engaging.)
He didn't learn anything from the shoe that he released. It was a cheaply made shoe with cheap materials, sold at a premium price. Also, they could've still had ads, but not timed ads and not download ads. They could've had like 1 banner ad at the bottom of the screen, and the option to unlock a premium wallpaper for maybe a week if you watch an ad. There are so many better options.
Commenting for the algo! Also I'm enjoying the random little commentary vid on a subject that interests you. I think I'd enjoy watching you talk about anything lol
0:45 yes, same here. i also slowly unsubbed from all tech youtubers for one reason or another. be it shilling too hard for a product, misinformation, or knowingly doing ads for scam products or talking about my domain getting it so wrong they lost all credibility to me.
I never really saw him as a tech reviewer, at least not an honest one. Him bashing the AI scams was actually surprising to me. I see him as more of frivolous spender content creator. How do you monetize your rich boy spending habits? He pulls it off. But also, he's a walking advertisement for Apple, because he can be easily bought by tech giants. So it's hard to take his reviews seriously. Because he's a frivolous spender content creator, this is right up his alley. The 50/50 split is SAD. The greed is unreal.
I think when you boil it down, the most important thing to take away from all of this is《to unlock the rest of this comment, please view 2 additional NerdSync videos or leave a SuperThanks!》
Hey Scott, I work in mobile game development and the say you have over what ads get played is actually incredibly minimal. You pick an ad provider based on the kind of deal you have, and some of them listen if you have specific requests (eg; adult themed ads being played to children) but in most cases it's just based on whatever data they've pulled from the user :/ it's a lawless land
50% is not a bad split if the work on the app is significant. Developers and UI designers also need to paid. However the app is barebones from what I can see. So this is ridiculous.
Quick correction Scott: Marques said the split for artists is 50% of profit, not revenue, so unless he misspoke - so sounds like even less is going to the artists...
@@mipmipmipmipmip-v5x it's possible, unfortunately, that's why when any business says that "X% of profits goes to ____" I get way more suspicious because there are more ways to mess with profit amounts on the books. Though I definitely don't think that Marques intends to do something super shady like that here, there's no evidence of that, but you're right in that using profit instead of revenue not only means less money is going to artists, it importantly also means less transparency unless the company is gonna let literally every artist look at their detailed accounting records.
You know what I get for less than that wallpaper app? For $9.99/month I get Marvel friggin' Unlimited. All the Marvel comics I can eat, for $2/month less than this crummy wallpaper app!
Im gonna be honest when I first heard about the app and the high price I assumed it was justified because he was doing revenue split. When I found out it was only 50/50 and he was letting AI on there I was pretty disappointed. Can I afford a $50 wallpaper app? No. In the tech space is $50 unreasonable for a yearly subscription? Saldy not. Lots of weather apps, note apps, and tones of things you wouldnt think of cost an arm and a leg yearly. Im sure he was paying developers a fair wage, and got hefty servers knowing the size of his audience (His yearly phone camera composition take beefy backend to my memory). Lots of upfront costs that "justified" the price.... I understand that in theory... However. Why not do a soft launch? Get beta testers. I dont know how anyone thought launching a brand new app with one of his most popular videos was a good idea. Outside of all of that, I think launching what I would consider an art gallery app then allowing the use of AI is the biggest disappointment. My friend and I recently came up with the term "hotel art" which are for pieces that are visually interesting but carry little to no emotional weight. The app feels like a gallery of hotel art with the us of AI and lack of any communication or summarizes of these pieces. Artists dont even have a bio to say something about themselves. All in all, people have been asking for his wallpapers for years and he found arguably the worst way to provide them. A twitter account that "pays" in exposer would have almost been better than this.
I really enjoy your occasional videos covering larger UA-cam culture and stuff like AI! And the very small dig at LTT being annoying made me laugh, even tho i like those guys. Good work as always!
Paying money for something that most people don’t look at more than a minute at a time is ridiculous. I’ve had the same wallpaper for a year now and barely notice it or think about it much. He is normally a more well-thought-out creator but this is truly an out-of-touch move
11:43 reminds me of the time Hank Green basically said the people not supporting scishow on patreon don't care about their mission. It made me so uncomfortable
The thing is about Panels for me is that I like pop culture backgrounds like from my favorite hyper fixations... Panels is not going to have collages of Oscar Isaac or Moon Knight wall papers. If I don't use a pop culture background, yes I'll use something generic, but that's rare... and its usually a stary galaxy wallpaper that's made from a NASA satellite picture. For 12 bucks a month or 50 annually, plus the deluge of ads... I'll stick to Pinterest 🤷♀💜
"Poor people can't afford stuff" shocker. They can always go get a free app. Or nothing. They don't have the RIGHT to stuff. The thing that irritates me, is a man who has hundreds of millions of dollars claiming that they need the subs to "fund the development costs" of an app he could program in his lunch break. Presumably, his justification will be that it is going to do a lot more. Tell you what Marques, when it does, ask for money then. Right now, it's as valuable to me the startup sound in Windows.
4:49 “it’ll be up to you how much you value human touch” is basically “I don’t care about artists and the ethics of AI as long as I’m getting paid” ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING
You mean a guy who straight up shills and lies on behalf of Apple and Tesla MIGHT have a lack of morals? Might be greedy? Nooooooo, NOOOOO. Never! He's clearly the forefront of honesty and integrity. His lack of understanding of the tech he is straight up acting as a shill for (he should have apologized for that Apple interview and taken it down) does nothing but hurt people. "But, but, he was right about Rabbit and the other 'AI useless toys'!" Cool. Broken clock and all that.
I honestly don't think its a bad idea for an app. People look at their phones more than their loved ones faces, so having curated art for your phone that you can refresh regularly makes sense. But research into user price sensitivity is one of the most important things to do BEFORE launch. $1.99/month with an 80/20 split in favor of the artist, maybe.. ... rather than literally the cost of a full streaming service.
lol people can just save anything they want and use it as wallpaper. no payment needed. and when people use their phones, they're not looking at the wallpaper
Bro who TF looks at the wallpaper on their phone so much they'd pay for it? Most people either have pictures of people as their wallpaper or pictures they can just download on the Internet for free.
Honestly, I can't even see the justification for the existence of a free wallpaper app. Do people really need a dedicated source of constantly updating wallpapers? The last time I changed mine was about 4 years ago.
It's BEYOND me, how MKBHD, who must have made a little fortune, could charge 50 bucks for such an app. In my book, he absolutely earned his success. But really: he doth NOT need that extra money. It's so sad really.
I've been turning this over in my head, and I just cannot understand why a subscription model would be a good idea for digital wallpapers. People on here have commented how it's good to pay people for their art... And, yeah, you can do that by requiring a one-off payment for each wallpaper you download (whisper it, like an old-fashioned retail business). The app could still function as a way to follow specific artists, and the homepage can be used for seasonal launches, paid promotions, and highlight lesser-followed artists from their rosta. Also, could be more generally about art/photography appreciation, with options for print-on-demand for posters or other products using the artwork. And prices can be set individually in agreement with the artists, so there's more agency for the artist. Perhaps I'm describing something that already exists, but I guess the idea is that it isn't just a marketplace because it would be still be curated by Marques. I think we need to realise that not everything can or should be a subscription service.
The crazy thing for me is most people just use screenshots of stuff they find online or family photos or pictures they take themselves ... This is really only an app for MKBHD fans, which is probably the thinking behind the charge. His fans will pay because it's his app. The revenue thing sounds obnoxious though. Is he going to split every 50¢ on the dollar between all the artists involved? That sounds almost as bad as "doing this work will give you exposure that's better than the money you'll earn." nonsense.
Saying Marques is out of touch is the biggest problem with all these "big" tech UA-camrs. The same goes for Linus Tech Tips. They are out of touch with the real world. They get all these expensive products for free and are living the high life. They don’t know how it feels to live paycheck to paycheck. They don’t know how it feels to save money each month for years just to get a new phone. That’s okay if you stay humble, but here’s the problem: they’ve also lost their humility.
I fully agree that the price and adds are insane, but I will say it is nice to have an app that filters out AI art (assuming they are doing that) because so many similar apps are flooded with it.
In the iOS App Store, it listed the app as 9+ years old Also, now I don’t need to make my MKBHD video because you summed up 90% of my thoughts 😂 - great video!
Most of what you say is on point. Revenue split I’m a bit less sure of. Things like UA-cam, Spotify, Etsy etc they’re massive platforms and not really offering curation and collaboration they are more of a service to the people they share. More equivalent to hosting space or credit card feeds. Something like this you could see the App as actively promoting curated products. In the real art world galleries often take 70%, in retail RRP usually offers stores 50-60%. People may think these fees are high but ultimately it’s for a creator to decide if this kind of split is going to be worth it to them to expand their income overall. You also have to think how Marques could just commission the wallpapers for a fixed cost and then the creators could end up with much smaller share of the revenue. That being said this app sounds like a trash user experience and absolutely ridiculous price.
It's always really weird watching tech reviews and ads completely misunderstand why I'm looking at them, if maybe because I also know a bit more than the average person. I see them selling storage solutions and be like, "Wow! 6TB for $200! What a steal!" Meanwhile I go to a certified professional refurbisher of HDDs and get a 2 year warrantied 16 TB drive for $150. Tech youtube and articles are 95% advertising to people who don't understand tech and how much cheaper alternatives are if you can put in a minimum effort.
Good video, I don't know your channel so I thought it will be just another drama youtuber selling their integrity for clicks but I was surprised to find a fair and balanced video. Big love
I've watched Marques for years and the funny/sad part of this is that with this app he is doing a lot of the things he usually criticise other companies for. Out of touch prising? Check. Annoying ads? Check. Greedy revenue split? Check. Vague promises of future features? Check. It's honestly baffling and I think he will have a hard time cleaning his image of this miss-step, because how can he criticise anyone else for these things?
It's weird that those techbros think this is a win for them. Like... this isn't a *good* product, but it is broadly functional. It's not a promise of an idea or a concept that doesn't even work. That said... I'm not an iPhone owner, so I have to ask: are wallpapers different from just downloading a photo and making that your background? Cuz I don't know why this is something that there's an app for.
I'm not expecting my second favorite Scoobytuber who also is kinda smoother-looking Hbomberguy would talk about insane greedy app of a tech youtuber! I appreciate the efforts tho
I got to be honest. I really don't care. This is one of those things that rather than complain about how I wish it was cheaper so I could buy it, I kind of just don't buy it. I mean, because to me, $0.99 a year is probably too much in my opinion for phone backgrounds. That said, the cost to create these backgrounds could end up justifying the price on a technicality, I mean we are about paying artists, but... for me it's just not something I'd ever be interested in. That said, the man has to pay for his car channel somehow. Lol, if he is going to be putting some of these electric sports cars out of business by telling it like it is and giving an honest review, I imagine many are not going to send him cars. Scott, maybe you should take his cue and release a NerdSync Emoji collection for $10 a month so we can use that money to free the release of Coyote vs Acme or create a Scoob 2
I wanna start by saying that artists are underpaid and making it as an artist is hard and that every artist deserves every penny they get for every second of hard, wonderful work they do. That said...there are some things that are just a harder sell than other things because people are used to just getting them for free (or pseudo free as part of bundles or something) "Nobody" is gonna pay money for a wallpaper. Quotes because surely people have, did, and will. But it is so disgustingly easy to just google image a hi res picture of something you're interested in and use that as your wallpaper for your phone or PC or whatever that this is a VERY hard sell. I'm not saying the artists who made them don't deserve money. Please don't read this is that. All I'm saying is that asking for money for something than 99% of people get for free is a HARD sell. People are used to paying for movies, shows, games, etc, so we're willing to pay for those and sailing the high seas is usually, as Gabe says it, is usually a service issue (there's always exceptions, some people just refuse to pay for stuff when they can get it for free) Paying money for a jpeg is a big ask. The people who actually paid for that, have in the past, or will in the future are saints, suckers, or both. And to be clear, I've paid for art. I've commissioned art. But paying for commissions isn't the same as paying for art that artists put out into the ether. The 150~ I spent on that picture, which I'm happy with and was worth every penny, was shown to the world for free and hundreds/thousands opened that picture I paid 150 bucks for, right clicked, and pressed "save as" for free. There's no universe where I'm perma giving money to artists for stuff not tailor made for me personally. This is just not something normal people paid for and, again with full respect to the artists...anyone who paid any amount of money for a wallpaper that was not tailor made for you by artist commission, got hustled. You are a stooge. You are a muppet. You are a mark. You got got. Or you knew that and just wanted to support a YTer or artist you like with full knowledge you were paying for what amounted to a scam service. So long as its consensual, I'm ok with it and don't think less of you. But all in all, wallpapers are, again with slim exceptions, a free item and have been free on the internet since basically their inception. Paying for wallpapers feels like paying for movie trailers. Its just something that we, collectively as a society seemed to have agreed upon "yeah, this is fucking free"
I just keep thinking about when he made a video after one of those AI things failed where he was like "I will always be critical if a product has problems" but he filmed it inside his Cybertruck that he drives everyday

I can't tell you enough how much that means to me or how much long hospital wait time before a surgery can otherwise be rough. Thank you.
Honestly, I didn't notice until I read this.

This is just controversial. I still love his videos. I’m sure he’ll learn something. S**t happens and we learn.

WHY???
1 wallpaper per phone and if that phone lasts 4 years, so be it.
Yeah... Mines a picture of my cats!
I have cats and a camera... I have no use for wallpaper app....

When you can also just go on any social media, find your fav artist, and be like "hey mind if I use this for a personal desktop background?" and they'll probably be like "yea sure" or maybe "I have a bundle of wallpapers on my site for 5 dollar"
I use wallpapers from Pikaole (artist) and give them 8 dollars on patreon every month... and that's for tons of wallpapers, icons, and physical merch.
Like, the people who buy hardware a lot because it Looks nicer irl, but doesn't actually want to spend a lot of time interacting with software, so they are theoretically willing to pay that much for the "convenience" of this app.. with the convenience being that they don't have to research wallpaper apps, because they trust Marques, so if he says it's his app and it's good, then they don't have to think further about it, if that makes sense
(Also just to be clear, I am not one of those people, but I do see a lot of people like that in tech youtubers comment sections)
@@yordytorres5675yeah but it's still $5 a month and not one time $5 when you want a new wallpaper

I still can't understand paying $50/yr for wallpaper on a phone, which is basically just a placeholder image for when you're not using it.
@@sugarfrosted2005 it's a niche market. Some people will pay artists for their work rather just downloading a copy somewhere else. There are things that they do to fix though. Don't allow the artist to upload previous artwork they've had for free, it should be unique/exclusive to the app.
I have a picture of my dog on my phone. Fucked if I could ever find ANYONE to make anything better looking than that!
@@JaveyCyber exactly this. I don't think I know anyone who doesn't have a photo they took as a wallpaper.

You get UA-cam Premium + UA-cam Music for 12,99 €, let that sink in... and he comes up with mere Wallpapers, sorry it's insane.
UA-cam just jumped the family membership from about €18 to about €25
I think it varies from country to country, that's why it pays to use a VPN when signing up for subscription services, you can save a lot of money that way.

I mean isn’t being out of touch a prerequisite of being a tech reviewer?
Tech UA-cam is about as fun as actual Tech is nowadays. So not fun at all.
1:49 I was assuming the price was because they were giving artists a lot of the money they deserve but 50/50 feels like a cash grab 70/30 would be much more reasonable
Genuine question: What's wrong with just downloading high res pics and setting them as your wallpaper? Why would one need an app for this?
(No offense meant!)
But I like the vibes you seem to have curated here on your channel, and thought you were funny and entertaining. So I'll stick around! And give your other videos a try; I think there's a strong possibility that I'll find plenty I enjoy, even if the topic doesn't seem like it'd overlap with my normal interests. Maybe I'll even pick up some new interests as a result, who knows! 😊
(As an aside, you remind me a bit of Hbomberguy...
One thing you failed to mention is that at least some of the "artists" are actually his current employees.

Does he also have a gambling problem like Jimmy ? So he needs instant cash grabs ?
Ohh didn't know about Jimmy gambling. Is it confirmed? At least that'll mean he could get some karma.
"What has Linus done now? Wait- who's this guy??"
Quick correction Scott: Marques said the split for artists is 50% of profit, not revenue, so unless he misspoke - so sounds like even less is going to the artists...
He just can charge his promotion of the app as a cost to his company, getting a zero profit for the accounting books
5:25 kitty!
17:53 not only is the revenue split insane, portions of that revenue are going to AI “artists” who contributed nothing
To me the silliest part is where he claims people are constantly asking him where he gets his wallpapers.
bro wheres the plot twist where Scrappy made the app
Paying money for something that most people don’t look at more than a minute at a time is ridiculous. I’ve had the same wallpaper for a year now and barely notice it or think about it much. He is normally a more well-thought-out creator but this is truly an out-of-touch move
Not to mention: someone splitting 50/50 with the artists and what’s effectively a distributor is bonkers
11:43 reminds me of the time Hank Green basically said the people not supporting scishow on patreon don't care about their mission. It made me so uncomfortable
Oof! He said that? I'm starting to be disappointed in him, along with a couple other criticisms of him and Scishow that I've seen lately.
“We’ll put a pin in that” bro your putting so many pins that you’ll need a pin cushion
I genuinely am interested in your opinion!
Okay but........ why?
I watched maybe two MKBHD videos in my life, is his average audience big into wallpaper collecting?
@@michel0dy no. no we are not.
After this stunt, I've seen enough from him, cause truly..... who was this for (besides his pockets)?
@@angeleaishida But what if.... artists could be compensated for their work?
I'll just echo what everyone else seems to be saying in that I really like listening to whatever you're passionate about talking about
The crazy thing for me is most people just use screenshots of stuff they find online or family photos or pictures they take themselves ...
To be fair he is an Elon Musk, capitalist, American, alpha male podcast and mr beast liker person
Marques is probably bracing for all his losses when Tesla goes bankrupt 😬
The artists are mostly his employees and they're allowed to use AI to make the art. So it's basically just AI crap...
I’m new to the channel but I come here to see what Scooby Doo or random topic you decide to talk about
Saying Marques is out of touch is the biggest problem with all these "big" tech UA-camrs.
Wow. This season of Velma took an odd turn.
His app is useless and it wants $50 for some wallpapers 😂😂
Honestly seeing this new side of scott is making me cross fingers for a new type of content 🤞
Wait, people pay money for wallpapers?
I fully agree that the price and adds are insane, but I will say it is nice to have an app that filters out AI art (assuming they are doing that) because so many similar apps are flooded with it.
Some of the app’s artists use AI 🙃

"people keep asking me which browser I'm using, well, for only $50 a year, or $12,99 a month ..."
In the iOS App Store, it listed the app as 9+ years old
Also, now I don’t need to make my MKBHD video because you summed up 90% of my thoughts 😂 - great video!
After watching Marques for a full year focus on how big a phone's "chin" was, I concluded, I don't share values with this man.
Wow, that guy MKBHD is out of touch with reality. Too long drinking the Apple Kool-Aid, perhaps.
10:11 You can't actually choose which ad you want to show. It's up to the ad platform, and devs have no control over it as far as I know.
Scott I genuinely think you make some of the highest quality videos on the internet, amazing stuff here with genuinely good criticism!
not advocating the app :P but 12$ a month isn't all that bad considering some folks pay 20$ / m just for talking to a spreadsheet algo.
This couldve been some sort of flickr website for wallpaper artists and fans, then polished it before turning it into an app
I wanna start by saying that artists are underpaid and making it as an artist is hard and that every artist deserves every penny they get for every second of hard, wonderful work they do.
That said...there are some things that are just a harder sell than other things because people are used to just getting them for free (or pseudo free as part of bundles or something)
"Nobody" is gonna pay money for a wallpaper.
People are used to paying for movies, shows, games, etc, so we're willing to pay for those and sailing the high seas is usually, as Gabe says it, is usually a service issue (there's always exceptions, some people just refuse to pay for stuff when they can get it for free)
Paying money for a jpeg is a big ask.

I just keep thinking about when he made a video after one of those AI things failed where he was like "I will always be critical if a product has problems" but he filmed it inside his Cybertruck that he drives everyday
the only tech mkbhd talks good about is Apple and Tesla he is very biased in his so called reviews the bad thing is that people idolize this guy.
