Why a Scary Blood Test Changed Everything For Me

  • In May 2024, my doctor reviewed my bloodwork at a routine checkup. He was concerned and gave it all to me straight. I left that day knowing I had high LDL cholesterol, high blood sugar, and terrible hydration habits. And I was pretty dang sure I knew why.
    From the moment I left the office, I vowed to live healthier-not just for my own sake but to set a good example for my kids and for the many people who watch my content.

      True, but even more important is your triglycerides to HDL ratio. My LDL is super high as I'm fat-adapted, but so is HDL, which is good and triglycerides are also super low, which is again very good. The cut-off limit for LDL to not be safe is much higher, at around 190. We have a drug for LDL (statins) that's why doctors are pushing pills for it.

    this is SO interesting!
    I recently had to get bloodwork done due to an autoimmune disease of the eye (uveitis) emerging, and the results shocked me at how normal my readings were. I don't say this to brag, but rather, highlight the fact that feeling alone is not a true representation of one's health, as I'm overweight and not as active as I'd like to be ( I truthfully don't feel all that great), and I was SURE it was going to be a horror-show when I got the results. Regardless of my better than expected readings, I'm making lifestyle changes to improve my future.
    I wish you well on your journey! Good on you for taking action :)

      Your fasting blood sugar is more to do with the amount of fat your body stores inside organs, which makes your cells less sensitive to insulin. So yes, smoothies can be bad for blood sugar, but mainly because they make it easy to over consume calories, rather than because it spikes your blood sugar. A blood sugar spike is a normal and healthy response to consuming carbs, not something to be feared unless you are already diabetic.

    • @theferallife8812
      @theferallife8812 35 хвилин тому

      Blood sugar rises are a normal physiological response to eating, as the body breaks down carbohydrates into glucose, which enters the bloodstream to provide energy. This gradual increase in blood sugar levels allows insulin to regulate and distribute glucose effectively. However, blood sugar spikes, characterized by sharp and rapid increases, are not normal. They indicate a disruption in the body's ability to process glucose properly, often due to excessive intake of high-glycemic foods or insulin resistance. Frequent spikes can strain the pancreas, lead to insulin imbalance, and increase the risk of long-term health issues like diabetes.

    • @HopyHop1
      @HopyHop1 34 хвилини тому

      This is simply not true. Walter Kempner demonstrated in the 1930's, 40's, and 50's that a diet of nothing other than rice, fruit, fruit juice, and table sugar reverses diabetic retinopathy (blindness) and lowers blood sugar on glucose tolerance tests among other things. Since then Dean Ornish Caldwell Esselstyn, Nathan Pritikin and others demonstrated that a diet that contains less than 10% of total calories from fat lowers cholesterol and HbA1C (blood sugar). It's dietary fat that causes insulin resistance and high blood sugar; carbohydrates lower blood sugar. This should have been widely known 90 years ago, but people generally love to hear good things about their bad habits. This is one reason why Joe "broscience" Rogan is popular.

    • @HopyHop1
      @HopyHop1 17 хвилин тому

      I eat smoothies with bananas, mixed frozen fruit, and sugar quite often. The last time my blood sugar was tested it was normal despite my consumption of coffee with a couple ounces of sugar before the test. Anybody who habitually consumes 10% or less of total calories from fat will have high insulin sensitivity and sugar in their blood will clear rapidly.

    as a type 1 diabetic (pretty much genetic diabetes) i would like to offer a little insight on the HBA1C. you noted in your video that you haven't been eating anything with added sugar, however it isn't just sugar that is going to raise your blood glucose level, the biggest thing is carbohydrates in general. this being said I saw at 9:08 that you showed a picture of something you were eating that was largely rice based. rice I have found to be something to make my blood sugar spike and stay high, even if I inject the 'correct' amount of insulin to counteract it.
    Just wanted to point this out as if you want to drop your HBA1C level, cutting a little bit of rice out of your diet could work wonder.

    LDL is not bad per se. There are a whole bunch of other factors that go into this analysis. To be honest, Seth, you sound pretty uneducated about this stuff. You are parroting out typical doctor speak without any understanding of the underlying mechanisms. Your numbers are probably fine, and your diet is fine, but the understanding is not there. You should stay away from statements like "LDL is the bad cholesterol". LDL is a necessary part of the body's functioning. Go check out Dr Sten Ekberg's channel and learn about LDL and the subdivisions of LDL in terms of particle size, oxidative stress, epithelial dysfunction, inflammation. It's worth the time and it will put your mind at rest about things you really don't need to stress about, and which things are important. You've made a good start on your health, but you need to be more informed if you're going to educate others.

Comparison to addiction is good as it shows you need to create habits to decrease the need for decisions. Egg yolks have all the vitamins in the egg, but also all the cholesterol and fat. Depends on what you're worried about. With Seth's blood cholesterol and family history of heart disease, he's probably making the right choice. Most other sources of the vitamins have less cholesterol than egg yolks.

    I don't buy that 90% of adult males your height are under 167 lb. At 5'4" and 167, that's a BMI of 28.7. That puts you at the 59th percentile for US males. I can't find percentiles for the whole world, though.

    What's wrong with cucumber and ham?
    But considered it's Murica and 50% sugar and high fructose corn syrup in everything, that might be your problem. Cut the carbs, that's your problem unless you do heavy weight lifting which might require some extra on top of what the liver produce. And if you need carbs for weightlifting avoid fructose cause the muscles can't use it, only the liver can process it into fat just like alcohol.
    And don't blame the cholesterol, you'd die without it and it's just trying to fix all the damage caused by high blood sugar. Eat more meat and animal fats, vegetable fats contains omega 6 which is highly inflammatory and even worse than sugar.
    It's the constant artery inflammation from sugar and omega 6 that causes cholesterol build up as it's trying to heal the wounds, it's like blaming the firefighters cause they're always at the scene of a fire.
    And try raw milk that's not homogenised and pasteurized, the pasteurization destroys vitamins and good stuff. Homogenization breaks up the fat particles so they become too small and pass through the gut at the wrong place and may cause issues, if the gut gets to process it the right way it's all healthy and important fats. Real cream and butter is a good and important source for fat.
    I don't remember the details but there was something with the dietary fats that was important for the gut health. The wheat we have today is modified and not the same as 100 years ago but still, gluten intolerance and leaking gut has spiked alongside with cutting out these dietary fats so maybe there could be a link there.

    In my experience, the blood tests don't give accurate enough information. It does not factor in onset of diseases (it catches it too late) and it doesn't actually show state of the organs (not as well as they state) or the calcium buildup in the veins (CAC is the best test for this, a coronary calcium test). So yes, the values can be useful, but they are based on individuals who take blood tests. Which often aren't healthy individuals. So the range is too wide. The healthy range is actually much more narrow.
    Also, after spending 14 years trying to heal my chronic health issues, what I've landed on is that diet is 50%, but there is also environmental factors (mold, heavy metals, infections, viruses, bacteria etc such as lyme, and all the other things which can trigger a health decline). Unprocessed trauma and emotions is a big one. Chronic stress, lack of sleep, sunlight, movement, fresh air, clean water, human foods (meats, fish, saturated fats, etc.... everything we've been told to either limit, or not eat), under nutrition and lack of enough macro / micro nutrients.
    Most doctors doesn't know diet. They know how to prescribe pills. I'd take everything they say with a grain of salt. Look into what people who have healed chronic diseases did, and do that. That's my 5 cents. Just speaking from my own experience. All doctors did was gaslight me or want to prescribe meds (with a few exceptions).
    Also, I recommend looking into Dr. Philip Ovadia, Dr. Ken Berry, Homesteadhow, Dr. Anthony Chaffee, etc. I'm not saying it's the only way to eat, but meat is not the danger we've been told.
    I digress. You gotta do what's right for you.
    Either way, I'm sure you got this! Be well my man.

    on a serious note - be happy you found out you are pre-diabatic! at 35 i found out i am diabetic (type 1, which seemed strange...), i was admitted to the hospital having over 1000mg/dl (thats how we measure in eurpope, no idea how to translate it to us-values, but it means while i was on the brink of death while others would have died already). now i am 42, started caring about sports and nutrition and am fitter than ever! in a way my diabetes turned me into a healthier person, as strange as it sounds! but like i said, be happy you found out before its too late! all these injections i do daily suck.....

Now I have an avocado and 4 eggs for lunch, and meat (chicken, pork, beef, fish) and a big, big serving of vegetables for dinner (and NOT peas and carrots), and stopped drinking beer every night. I've eliminated most all processed foods and pasta/potatoes/rice/bread from my life and have learned to pay attention to nutritional labels. Lost 30 lbs and have never felt better in my adult life. It is so frustrating to hear people say they don't eat much red meat. For health reasons.
    Red meat and organs especially are wonderful for you. You just cannot replicate the nutrients you get from a SMALL serving of red meat (you don't have to have a massive steak every day) regularly.
    Same with eggs. Go look at rhe dude who did the extreme eggs challenge he recently. 720 in a month. Absolutely no difference in his bloody work. NONE. And he eats the yolks too.
    Fair play to you though for looking after yourself Seth. Good to see. I just wouldn't listen to Doctors who are there to mostly ply people with pills.
    I went to my doctors, and asked about a new training regimen and wanted an MOT as I'm now 50 and I wanna drop some kilos. She said immediately "you know If you want to do it quickly I can give you wegovy" 😅

He leans toward a whole food diet, but is pretty non-judgmental and focsuses on what folks can stick with. I think what you're doing is great. Conjunctions of stress have always impacted my health, food intake and functional freeze being the result. For me having kids (shear cost + sleep and life interrupted), getting a mortgage (the unfairness and scrutiny) and starting a business (the constant 1 step forward 3 back) all were points that really derailed my health. Kids were also the reason I got back on track.
    For me it started with walking till I was hitting 10k almost 5 days a week. Then riding that accomplishment by dieting with a food tracker app and learning to forgive myself when I failed once in a while.

    Smoothie is make believe food. Yes, the sugar in it us the healthy one, however, with the goals you have, you will hit plateau regarding the weight and feeling better. The smoothie you showed in the video - cut it in half and it will be more than enough. In addition, if you feel bad in morning for some reason, don't worry too early, gut bacteria needs some aligning period with the new food and regenerate bacteria volumes to adapt to specific foods. Had the same journey this year, skinny fat weight drop was nice and finally seeing the muscles. :) Also - few cheat meals will bounce you back quick in the beginning.

    Hello Seth, I was diagnosed as diabetic a dozen years ago and was told that if I didn't correct things I would be headed for a stroke or heart attack. I also had cholesterol that was through the roof. Just over 5 years ago I suffered a pretty devastating stroke as a result of not getting my glucose down or it should be. When I was first diagnosed the doctor said I was supposed to child for what I should be doing to combat my disease. Encouraging words but it led to a false sense of security and I began to go right back to my old ways thinking I had accomplished my goals. That scenario has been a bit of a recurring roller coaster ride until lately. After my previous doctor visit I decided I was stronger than this and have dropped 30 lb lowered my A1C's to 5.3 and have an LDL of 80. Those last two numbers were about half of where they were just 6 months earlier. Do not neglect your glucose levels. If I had been given a choice, I would have had a heart attack every day of the week compared to having a stroke. If you survive either one of those, a heart attack will leave you with a nasty scar on your chest. My stroke has left me struggling with everything I do. Not a place I would wish anyone to be.
