Hey everyone! It took me forever to make these clips and by the time I got to the remaining few I was exhausted. After swapping out A Flock of Seagulls - I Ran for 'Wishing' I forgot to change the text. So if you like that song and want to find it 'A Flock of Seagulls - Wishing'.
Angela Benedict thank you for putting this together! You brought me back down memory lane. I lost myself somewhere along the years...I Love this music! All of it! Thank you!
I agree with what you said about first listening to goth music. I will be honest to say I hated it for awhile untill I found (The Cure) & (Christain Death) and soon after I begin to fall in love with more and more 80's Darkwave goth music. And that is where my goth roots started and helped me through my baby-bat yrs. I am 24 and I have open my self up to every branch of the gothic subculture. Recently for a few months now I really really gotten into the Industrial Cybergoth style and subculture.
Dear Angela Benedict What would you say when people say's Cybergoth isn't Goth? Even some goth's I know say's they aren't goth. I even check online with other goth's around the world.. Most say's no. Plz If You Could Respond And Let Me Know How You Would Respond To That. It Would Help Me Alot. Thank You So Much!!! 🖤🖤🖤
People who look goth somehow and listen to mother mother and mitzki, are ok for me. I like people who look how they like it, but I would not call them goth based on their looks. I would secretly call them alt-kids and laugh (secretly because I’m a real loner) It just reminded me of an analogy. Do you remember the silent battle between skaters and scooter kids? They where kinda annoying, always driving in your line, but they also just wanted to enjoy the experience visiting a skatepark.
I love the approach you're taking to this topic - not trying to squish people's goth dreams under your boot, but instead trying to help people understand that they probably already like goth music and just haven't heard enough to know it yet. I really appreciate the work you are putting into this topic.
Thank you! That's what's super important - I don't want to alienate anyone or make them feel as if they're being judged or held to a certain standard because it's not like that. We're here to help and once upon a time we were just like them. Today there are so many more resources available but they're kinda useless when you don't know what you're looking for. It's cool to be able to help others navigate just like we were when we were the youngins.
I definitely swing to more of the metal music, but Bauhaus will always be one of my favourites. I listen to everything from classic post punk, ebm, industrial, dark-wave...just whatever appeals to me. I think it can be so limiting to listen to one exclusive genre, so I appreciate that you went into such fine detail explaining all the sub-genres and relative music styles relating to the gothic subculture. This video NEEDS to be part of "The Curriculum" (if there ever was one :D )
I'm happy you like it! Maybe we should compile a curriculum! There are a lot of informative videos out there. I really hope people find this helpful. I was really surprised to hear that so many were under the assumption that goth is limited to the most popular staples (Bauhaus, Sisters, Siouxsie etc) but once upon a time so did I. It was so long ago I just forgot. Something really interesting that I've come to find is that umbrella has different subgenres beneath it depending on country. I want to explore that a bit. My husband is a fan of metal as well I noticed he has more Symphonic leanings such as Within Temptation, Nightwish, Epica and stuff. I agree, listening to one genre can be really limiting. Some days I blast New Kids on The Block (this literally happens regularly).
'Goth Metal' or Death/Doom bands like Paradise Lost, My dying bride, Theatre of Tragedy are excellent and in some ways probably got me into listening to more actual Goth bands.
Everything you mentioned in the beginning. I really love the style, DIY, darkness and etc...but I’m trying to listen to the music and I dislike it. I like bands like Siouxsie, Bauhaus, The Cure, The Smith’s, Ghost, HIM...but that’s about it that I can think of. I go back in forth listening to goth music because if I force myself to listen to it, I will eventually like it. I think the main thing for me is I prefer dark classical music to go along with my dark Victorian/Edwardian infatuation. I look forward to watching your videos to teach me more about goth bands that aren’t just 80s goth industrial bands that I already know of. I want to hear something new and their spin on it. I recently met a guy who is in a HIM tribute band with great music.
I definitely had not thought about the music she showed as goth, when I think about goth music I think about something like Nighwish or if more raw Slipknot. But maybe it depends on where you come from or your age and she's definitely the expert on what actual goth music is, specially originally, so very interesting video to learn more. I know some "goths" are just fashion goths too.
For me personally, I rolled into goth fashion after an emo phase while listening to a lot of metal and punk. Research into goth music has always presented a challenge for me because in my experience a lot of people, articles and things like that will not agree on which bands belong to which genre. I went through this video with a notepad, wrote down every band you mentioned and am currently digging through that to see which bands and or genres I like. Thank you very much for this video
I have a similar experience, i segwayed from my emo phase into a more mature dark goth fashion. And while my music taste is EVERYWHERE i feel like i know nothing about true goth bands. These videos have been helping me out so much with finding new darker music.
So much great music! I love how diverse the scene is, if you get tired of one genre you can always just listen to something else related for a while :))
I agree! You can never get bored. There's something for every mood. That's what I really wanted to help people just getting started to understand. The umbrella is wide :P
Sister's of Mercy's debut album is one of my favorite things in life. It is pure gold. Every single track just transports me to another dimension or puts me in some kind of trance. I can't describe it. But it's fucking great.
Type O negative is what got me into goth, fell in love right away. After that I expanded my horizons. By the way what you did with your eyes and lips in this video is astonishing!
Type O Negative is what got me into metal! My then boyfriend, (now fiancé) is a metalhead, I was a goth who hated metal…he showed me Type O Negative, I fell in love with both the music and Pete Steele, and the rest is history. Now my playlist probably has more metal music than anything, but I definitely still love Goth music. From what I hear, Pete was very into goth music and would go to goth clubs. I think Angela has even mentioned seeing him at a club in the 90s if I’m not mistaken. Goth music (and goth women let’s be honest) is what pushed Pete to transform Carnivore into Type O Negative, the band that seems to lure in goths and metalheads alike.
God...I've not heard The Never Ending Story in a long time. The song always wells up a weird sadness in me that's hard to describe. I loved the film as a kid, it's a classic!
Laughing jack i still don't like it very much... i'm still more into rock and metal stuff but people in the community say"oh you don't listen metal thats not metal" same goes for rock... i think i'll just give up on genres
I'm so picky with my music. Goth music is a mix bag for me. I do enjoy some oddball music, but I'm not sure if the ones I love falls into the goth genre. Like: Evanescence, My Chemical Romance, Within Temptation, and a few others.🖤😕
As a New Waver (if that's a thing) it is kinda weird/cool how _much_ a lot of goth and goth-adjacent music crosses over with stuff I already like or want to check out (I gotta get me into some darkwave), but nobody would call me goth unless I dressed in all black, which I usually don't. But yeah, if you're into synth stuff in general, both new and old...crossovers are gonna happen--according to this video, more often than I'd've thought. Basically during the New Wave and New Romantic parts of the video I was sitting there going "I love that song, I love that song, that one's in my collection, so is that, not that exact one but something else from the same album..." XD What I'm trying to say is thank you for an educational and interesting video, even if I am over three years too late. :)
I was always more into industrial, darkwave, grungy grind metal and cyber sounds. Me and electronic music have more of a spot then 80's trad goth music. I LOVE EBM, I just wish there was a scene for that where I live. But I have a spot for Alien Sex Fiend and the Cure. I haven't explored enough in the 80's area myself to find a deep love there yet. I find myself alternating different fashions of goth to suit my mood and what I am doing that day. I am a fashion dweeb. I am a very pop-oriented person as much as underground too. So I feel I fit more in cyberpop since I love creepy kawaii fashion too. Pastels really suit me I had learned the past few years.
I have been wanting to make a trip out there actually, I have heard really good things about the scene out there. I live in BC Canada currently. Working on relocating to California. I really love your channel! You do an awesome job. :)
Thank you so much for referring Industrial, EBM and Synthpop as goth siblings because I actually felt guilty when I learnt that they're not goth music. Glad I never misinforming anyone else about that.
Great video! Though I was a little surprised there was no mention of gothic (doom) metal. From what I understand it's kind of controversial in the goth subculture. For those of you who don't know, doom metal is typically slow and dark sounding, heavily influenced by Black Sabbath. Gothic doom metal mixes this style with gothic rock, making it more atmospheric. The guitar in gothic doom is usually more melodic and synths, piano, and/or strings commonly are commonly used. Something else you might find would be clean female vocals with growled male vocals. Gothic doom is also closely associated with death/doom metal, a mix of the respective genre names. Here's a few songs for anyone interested: Type O Negative - Christian Woman Draconian - The Morningstar Theatre of Tragedy - The Masquerader and Phoinex Black metal is another genre quite a few goths seems to enjoy, (at least it seems that way from the ones into metal) particularly the second wave style from the 90s. Black metal is pretty dark and aggressive for those not used to it but I think goths might be more inclined to enjoying it. Some songs would be: Immortal - Withstand the Fall of Time Dissection - Night's Blood Emperor - The Burning Shadows of Silence
var 9 um you do understand that those bands are not aimed at goths like at all right? Maybe read up about Mayhem and Emperor a bit more and the whole 2nd wave. You have people there that would hate the Goth sub culture.
dont forget to mention BURZUM. Dunkelheit always was my absolute favorite, so deep, so athmospheric. Masterpiece. I really was, and still be, into Tristania when Vibeke Stene was still there, until 2006. She really WAS gothic metal, who can still breath when she sings? Still today i m stunned whenever i listen to them. \m/
I wouldn’t suggest those bands to get a goth into black metal, I’d go with some atmospheric black metal or blackgaze bands. More ethereal stuff like Sylvaine or Alcest. I’d also suggest some doom bands because I think there’s a similarity in the vocals of doom metal and a lot of goth rock.
very lovely and detailed video! I really enjoyed your selection of bands and think this will be very helpfull to explain the wide umbrella that is goth music to new folks :) I noticed that here in germany and austria for example neoclassic is a very big part of goth music and subculture here. Bands like Sopor Aeternus, Die verbannten Kinder Evas and Dead can Dance. It doesnt seem to be very popular overseas :( I enjoy it very much tho and its probably my favourite sub-genre :D
I'm happy you like it! I've been learning that there are different sounds under the umbrella in Germany. Someone was trying to explain it and said that the scene was referred to as 'schwarz' something? I can't remember exactly the name. I love Sopor Aeternus and Dead Can Dance. I've never heard of Kinder Eva's, something fun to look for later :)
Do you mean "die schwarze Szene" or "die dunkle Szene"? It's simply "the black scene" or "the dark scene" and a wide continuum of music, fashion, literature, movies, and also video games.
A-ha is such an underated band. They are so good. And i am glad you incuded them. I really recomend everyone to give them a listen, especially to the Scoundrel days album
Joy division's unknown pleasures is one of my favorite albums of all time, but I don't really like much more music in the goth category. I dress goth and I really like dark literature, gothic horror and poetry. It's very inspiring to my art. I don't feel like I can call myself goth tho. I donno. It shouldn't be such a big deal anyways. Where I live the goth subculture doesn't even exist. I just like dark stuff. Also...Everything is so broadly mixed today so any subculture has a hard time. I hang out with many different "alternative" people and I enjoy my life. Anyways. I really like your approach to the topic. If the subculture can revive itself, this is the way.
If you're just not into the music then yeah, "Goth" wouldn't be the right word but going off what you said about liking dark stuff, you would be someone considered "Gothic" or "Darkly Inclined". But back on the music, what is it about the music that you don't particularly care for if you don't mind me asking?
Okay so as a baby bat like myself, this is pretty helpful for finding music in a culture that's still kinda hard to navigate even with the internet at your side. But thank you so much for this!
thank you for making fun and informative videos about the goth subculture! I enjoy them a lot and as a younger goth, it helps educate me about where goth came from, the music, and how it's evolved. Love your content!🖤🖤
I get a lot of laughs these days because in my 50s, I am too old to be running around all gothed up. A few years ago I walked into a shop in Camden (before it burned down), and there was a shop run by these French goth girls. They looked me up and down as if to say "what do you think you're doing in here"? I looked right back at them and thought "fuck you, I saw Bauhaus live". If you think that you need to dress up to be goth, you have already missed the point.
Yes! When I was younger, the gothest people I knew in terms of being knowledgeable about the music and quite literally saw practically every band possible live, was older and aside from a black t-shirt, didn't look perceptibly goth. Any goth worth their salt knows a sleeper when they see one! Those French girls sound like fashion goths. In it for the looks while the music takes a backseat...Or rides in the trunk (boot)! I miss the crap out of Camden. I lived in England for 6 years. What I wouldn't do for Belgian Bun from Gregg's.
I've always been into goth culture but lately I've been getting into the style and I've never felt more myself and confident. Thank you for your stories and fashion videos ! You're like a beautiful goth mom ! ❤👏
I was so excited that you featured Drab Majesty. I've been listening to them a lot lately. But I also now have a lot of new bands to listen to based on these suggestions. You always create great content. Thank you.
Oh Angela, your channel has become my very favorite and i can literally listen to you talk all day. You have made me realize I’m more of a Goth than I thought i was. Almost every sub genre of music you have mentioned i have listened to, but i am still finding more music I like every day. My entry into goth music all started with my love of new wave . Depeche mode, the smiths, flock of seagulls , and the cure especially. These bands opened the door for me to explore more music. I started listening to siouxsie soon after. Then i discovered sisters of mercy here on youtube actually and loved them. Also Bauhaus. Then i found a band named “Cranes” and i instantly fell in love with them. I always liked the cocteau twins but the. later started listening to this mortal coil. About five years ago i got into industrial and heard skinny puppy for the first time when my ex introduced them to me . I then also started listening to NIN. I love your taste in music and have even found new sounds here on your channel. Thank you so much for sharing and helping me find myself. Being a mom makes you feel secluded often and i have fashion wise been trying to find colors i like to wear because i get bored of always wearing black after years and years of limiting myself to only black. Other people online have made me question my “goth” identity with their extreme aesthetic but your channel has assured me I’m still 100 percent goth girl deep down🖤
My first goth band was also The Sisters of Mercy, I was told that Marilyn Manson was goth and first listened to him. I had the same situation, I searched for goth music and didn’t like it at all. Then I was introduced to the Sisters of Mercy and later I listened to the goth bands I heard first and now I really like them. I still sometimes listen to industrial (Not MM anymore because he is disgusting as a person) but I found a lot of good current goth bands which by the sound I thought were from the 80s. I listen to some Russian post punk and understand all the lyrics (I’m Russian) and now I truly enjoy the music.
I’ve always been interested in goth fashion but I’ve never really tried it because I adore pop punk music and I thought I wouldn’t like goth music. This video has proven my wrong! I had a misconception of what goth music sounded like and, aside from industrial and EBM, I will definitely be checking out these sub genres! Thank you for such an educational video!
2 years later and this video is still dope lol. I just love how informative (and nostalgic) this video is. I personally got into goth music through Deathrock because I was heavily into punk rock back in the day
I love this list! It's awesome you didnt just show the more well known goth bands. So many cool ones i want to check out on your list! Some of my fave goth bands are Bauhaus, the Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Type O Negative, London After Midnight, Merciful Nuns, She Past Away, Nick Cave, Clan of Xymox and Suspiria.
My goodness I haven't listened to Switchblade Symphony since I was about 15 or 16 thank you so much! It was strangely like your Sisters Of Mercy story - I was searching for Riot Grrl and something about their look and the bands I found them with reminded me of Riot Grrl but after feeling excited about finding a new Riot Grrl band, I listened to Bad Trash and was so disappointed - because I was 15 and it wasnt what I was looking for right then. Later of course when the atmosphere called for it, I reheard them and loved it.
I'll be 49 in October. As a teen in the 1980s, I was dorky and ungainly. I was either obese (before 16) or rail thin(16 to 19). I was into photography. I liked taking pictures in old cemeteries, and I was fascinated by monuments and their decay. I liked Poe and HP Lovecraft. The "alternative" kids were the ones who were nice to me, and there were non-spoiled girls. At first, I really just liked post-punk. Eventually, I got into deathrock, darkwave and goth rock. At most I have a permanently sunburned Gomez Addams look, but I've been called an elder goth for some time.
I like that you included goth songs that by non-goth bands. The Sun Always Shines On TV by Aha to me it is very darkwave influenced and the music video is very dreamy and surreal.
I am not goth, but am making attempts to understand and respect the history.I really love the ethereal sound (also the never ending story song, love the movie xD ) I've wanted to be goth since I was 14 ,but was scared to express that. My family often commented on me just wanting to wear more cool/warm grey and dark colors. Now that I'm nearing 21..I feel I might be ready to progress over ,Hah even when I'm alone I just do my make-up and feel a confidence I never had in my life. I want to thank you, the more I watch your videos I fall in love with goth again
I watched this video YEARS ago now. Back when I first really looked into goth and if I fit into this community. At the time I listened mostly to screamo, some death metal. That was really my range of sounds. I listened to these bands back then and didn’t like them so much. I’m not really sure why but they just didn’t fit me at the time. Now I’m a few years older. I’ve had some more life experience . I’ve calmed down and learned some hard lessons. Now I’m coming back to this and I’m finding sounds that actually do resonate with me. Ones that I had brushed aside when I was younger as not angry sounding enough. I’m glad that I re-found this video. Thank you for making it.
I'm not goth, but I do love learning about all of this! Can't really get into much of the music, but I did like the Skinny Puppy clip you featured. I'll have to go check out more and see if I like them!
If you're looking for something somewhat primal and painful, there's always the Screamers. ua-cam.com/video/G8wMX9NBCLQ/v-deo.html or ua-cam.com/video/dOY36lpdbLI/v-deo.html
I have an entire playlist of skinny puppy saved on here. ua-cam.com/play/PL8zgR5zPIt0hChqSAWTec35OoglwNTMxl.html They're amazing and have a wide range of sounds. the singer Ogre and also Kevin Key both have several other side projects they've been part of. Check out Wikipedia, en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skinny_Puppy there's a ton!
I'm so glad you finally made this, thank you. You included De/Vision, I love them so much. I used to be loyal to post-punk but now I'm in love with She Wants Revenge and The Birthday Massacre and it's amazing because they're relatively contemporary so... Goth is not completely dead. Hope you hear and like them
my mom is a goth and i remember her playing some of these songs when i was a kid.back then it was just old music to me x) bt now i listen to some of these and also more modern artists ..how cute
I'm so grateful for this video right now. I want to send this link to every person who claims to not like goth music as this video would most likely help them a tremendous amount. Hell, I've even discovered some music that I myself didn't know too much about. You are nothing short of amazing!
"Goth while Goth was still buffering." LMAO love it! Great video, as always, Angela! I like pretty much all of those genres you listed, and many of the bands and songs I recognized. I'm still learning about many of these. I came into the music somewhat obliquely. While a teenager in the early 80's, I called myself a "rocker" (metalhead,) but even back then, I disdained from limiting myself. While some of my favorite bands were groups like Motely Crue and Queensryche, I also enjoyed U2, Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, and Berlin. Even now, whole I am exploring the multiple genres that fall into the "Goth" category, like most of the genres you mentioned, I still enjoy some metal bands, especially symphonic metal like Nightwish and Within Temptation, goth metal or goth inspired metal like Bella Morte and Carfax Abbey, somewhat darker, though more 'contemporary' metal bands like Korn, Disturbed, and Godsmack. I began exploring the music first when I was living in Monterey California, and began to attend "Progressive Night" at one of the local clubs. The Club (that was actually the name of the place) played bands like the B52s, Ministry, Soft Cell, and others in an eclectic mix of new wave, synthpop, and other 'alternative' genres. At one point in the late 90's I bought a couple of Sisters of Mercy CDs. I didn't even know they were goth, I just liked them. I'm not even sure where I heard them first, to be honest. Still, in what could be major irony, it wasn't until around 2005 that I really began delving into the music., The ironic part is not the date, but that I found it while entertaining myself playing Second Life, an online video game in the mode of the sims. Second Life was termed a virtual world where you could be whoever you wanted to be. As such, there were many 'clubs' within the game, and it was in these, that I first came across bands like Nightwish, and later VNV Nation, and Diary of Dreams, as well as Faith and the Muse. As far as the question posed at the beginning of the video, I do think the music matters, but there are so many (as you aptly demonstrated) genres of music that can fall under the goth tag even if they are technically not goth, that I find there to be too much overlap to draw hard lines. OK I take that back. If you listen to Katy Perry, Britney Spears, and the like, and that is all you listen to, even if one enjoys the goth aesthetic, fashion wise, I am hesitant to call them "Goth." PS Your lipstick looked amazing. Actually, your make up did, but the lipstick stood out for me.
The Birthday Massacre, London After Midnight, Switchblade Symphony, The Cure were my first loves when I was but a bitty baby bat and trying to find myself. I lived in a small town where the only alternative people were either emo or scene. I was always called a poser because I liked different music and different style from them. It really sucked.
6:30 “next is my favourite, dark wave!” I felt that, but sometimes I prefer my music lugubriously. I hope I can go out someday without being scared to and find a goth club. I live in Germany so it shouldn’t be impossible.
My mom raised me on bands like The Cure, The Smiths, The Smashing Pumpkins, Depeche Mode, etc. She was an 80's goth in her teen years, and still a bit goth in her early 20's, so that was a big influence for me. The biggest influence of my love for goth music came with the rise of vampirefreaks.com and discovering The Birthday Massacre. It paved the way for my music and clothing tastes.
There is so much great music in this video! If I ever need to explain to someone that there are many different types of "gothic music" this would probably be what I show them, thank you for this video ❤
I love how you did this Angela! This is really a great educational video for those who are getting into goth by providing all these awesome examples of the different sub genres. Plus, like others have said, you approached the subject with non judgement and without sounding preachy. You make an awesome teacher! Hopefully people will find this video and want to research and explore further. I find that there is sound for everyone here. Plus like you alluded to, the internet makes it a bit easier to find good music versus back in the 90s or even the early 2000s when you had to buy cds or go by word of mouth. Thank you for putting so much emphasis on the music versus just fashion on your channel! Side note I think you should DJ at a club one day. I'd so trek out to the city for that!
Brilliant! Thanks for including so many different sounds, there were some bands I hadn't actually heard of and I now need to go give them a listen ❤️ also that lipstick is beautiful! X
Hey Tracey! I'm so happy you enjoyed it. I just hope it gets the creative juices flowing and people start discovering themselves through the sounds that resonate with them.
Angela Benedict thanks! I totally agree with you! I have loved this music since the 80's.. I started with the new romantics then new wave and dark wave.. That's my favorite time period.. I need to listen to more from the 90's forward.. I was in the closet then.. So to speak.. Long story..
I am goth and you inspire me so much! Thank you for everything you do and helping me show the world what I am! Also, idk what I'd do with out music lol😂
Thank u so much for the recs!! I knew quite a few of these songs already, the ones I haven't I'll definitely check out. Also, the story about how u hated the sisters of mercy when u were younger made me crack up. The first ever goth band I listened to was Bauhaus, but it was the sisters of mercy's album "some girls wander by mistake" that really made me fall in love with goth rock and the goth subculture as a whole. It's just crazy how different people's experiences can be
For me, I definitely lean more towards new wave, dark wave, new romantic with a touch of synth pop. This was music I accumulated later in life though. I was a child of emo music though. No shame... well, a little shame 😂🖤
Omg new wave/new romantics was my teen years. I love that music so much you wouldn't have guessed that by looking at me back then I was I guess you would say want to be preppy dress wise but I hung out with the alternative people. I always wanted to be like them but I was never brave enough to do it. Now I am older and I dye my hair purple or blue and I want to get non preppy piercings. lol Funny thing is back then I was afraid of what people would think about me doing that. I never thought that people would say about being the only "preppy" chick in a group of alliterative people. lol
same for me , i was totally into grunge and punk ( but English punk, not californian!! ) ... i then Started loving Classic metal as iron maiden etc..... But i wAs always darkly inclined , started studying about magic and esoterism when i was 13 and always dressed goth but i Just could not get into some of the goth bands i had Been introduced to..... then i discovered BAUHAUS....And It wAs done !!!! You don t have to love sisters of Mercy....ther are so many other goth bands !!!!! so many !!!!! .....P.S i really enjoyed going thrue our Amazing world of music . thankyou ♥
@@acglover7349 Hi. I suppose i am not educated enough about the rest of american punk. Im not american . Here in italy for "californian punk" we intend all of those bands like offspring , blink etc. That are more melodic ; what i meant was that i prefer the more "trashy" part of the punk world. Music is soooo complex that there will always be someone that nows something more than you... i simply love music... from The Doors , Pink Floyd, led zeppelin ....passing by Nirvana , radiohead... Iron Maiden , sepultura, Brujeria...all the way to Bauhaus , the cure and joy division.
"I'll never get tired of Terri Nunn." It was a TV performance of "Matter of Time" on Hollywood Heartbeat back in 1979 that helped pull me into the LA music scene. ua-cam.com/video/APPhaCUZj-0/v-deo.html Call me shallow, but I guess its hard to resist a girl in a side slit dress with Cleopatra eye make up. I still have the 45.
OK I am embarrassed, apparently they are still around. I still think her best work was Metro, after that I was hugely disappointed in 'Take my Breath Away' as were a lot of people hoping for them to continue to be more dark and mysterious and less mainstream sounding. I still loved Terri for Metro though and it never fails to get me. That was the last I heard from them and that was back in the 80's.
She used my favorite Berlin song for the video, too. There is something very atmospheric about the song. particular, for me, the lines concerning "the soldier."
Oh my god, I almost cried watching this! I remember when they were all new. (sucks getting old). After I saw the Heaven 17 clip I had to look it up to watch it. Thank-you, Cheers!
I meant love ❤️. There are some bands that don’t even get goth cred but people love them! I never hear their music at the clubs tho. Evør is one of my faves. Stay on the pulse to be undead 🧟♂️.
I remember being quite young (about 10) I started to become very interested in gothic stuff mostly clothes then movies and architecture but I HATED most of the music like it was 1 good song per band and they got old quick, then around 13 I found emo music and I LOVED IT and the fashion of scene and emo was so cool to me but then I found nine inch nails and later on babymetal and gravitated back towards goth, mostly industrial but also hints of Lolita, grunge, emo or hippie stuff, anyway I just thought I'd share that because this seemed like an appropriate video for it also ive seen some of your videos a long time ago but I hadn't subscribed until now, I'm on a binge and I've gotta say keep up the good work 👌
This is my ultimate fantasy-having a beautiful woman invite me to her house, and we sit & drink coffee while she plays me her favorite goth bands.Thank you Angela!
I would like to thank Angela benedict for introducing me to Faith and the muse & Switchblade symphony, Drac makens for Sisters of mercy, Black Friday for Suspiria and The count (cemetery confessions) for The Awakening. I'm glad I found so much music I love from here. 🖤
The Cure and SATBs had goth albums, it's just that the majority of their disco falls somewhere else. But you have to be deaf to label Cure's Pornography and SATB's Juju anything else than at least Gothic Rock-ish
Thank you for this It's so important to show clips of the music that people are missing out on And I know that takes time and effort on your part to put together So thanks again
Great video! Thanks for giving a guideline for each type of music. I grew up listening to 80s music and even though I knew that* new wave, new romantic, post punk and dark wave all had different sounds I would hear people call it all new wave. I'm glad you're shedding light and spreading knowledge :)
I love this video, finished watching it and already added some new songs to my playlist. That's what I came for. Btw I love you for putting Romeo's Distress and Assimilate
Excellent choice of music! Hoping you get the point across chix, this is just some of the amazing music there is in this Culture. I totally loved that you added The Frozen Autumn multiple times
I absolutely love goth music wasn't hard for me to get into as I started a metalhead at 11 and am still a fan of goth and extreme metal I fuse two together suites me well in my opinion 😃❤ love ur channel hun😍❤ Oh a question would metal count as goth music being it's a alternative side of music 😮
No metal is not goth, however, metal is extremely popular among goths nonetheless. Peter Steele of Type O Negative was influenced by Black Sabbath and metal is also undeniably is very dark, in fact it was the first music in modern times to use dark and horror as a musical influence before even goth.
Yes there are metal goth bands :). Sadly they focus on the guitar technique driven sound that emphasizes speed rather than the more eerie and creepy sounds like Black Sabbath and Dio did, which I personally think would be a better model for 'Metal Goth" than black metal. I have noticed some cross over and influence going both ways over the years. Which makes sense since both are going for the spooky and creepy. Another thing I have noticed is that in metal, the show is on stage, whereas with goth the show is you, the people around you, and your immediate environment. You get to be part of it rather than just see it from afar like in metal which is a really cool thing. This also explains why metal music is so enthralling and attension holding whereas goth music tends to be more back ground and atmospheric to allow you to interact with the spooky world you are in. The two music genre's have different purposes in mind.
Daya Autum that is absolutely true 😇😄❤ there also bands like Type o negative Tristania Lord of lost Gothminister Deathstars Moonspell Woods of ypres Draconian Batushka And many more 😃 but what u say is absolutely true with the difference guess it's why there two separate genres 😄❤ thx for ur input hun 😇❤
I wonder what you think of a few of the "darker" bands from germany, I personally do like... Like "Oomph", "Lord of the Lost" or "Unheilig". Have you heard of them, because I wonder how known they are globally...
@@jaqulinedittmann4106 I just listened to Labyrinth by Oomph and it was really good! Unheilig might be a new favorite for me. I'm a few songs in and love their sound, and the singer's voice is SO smooth. I'm not sure if you'd consider them to be goth-adjacent but I've been enjoying Faun for a while too. And from Sweden I've been liking Ad Infinitum and Apocalypse Orchestra.
@@darthapple87 I consider them darker music but wouldn't quite put the "goth stamp" on them... I love the Song "geboren um zu Leben" by Unheilig (unholy, btw) because the message of the song makes my heart go fuzzy and warm. I'm not a huge fan of Faun (I think..I might confuse them with another band) I'll check out the other two. Thanks for the suggestions.
Thank you for making this compilation of bands. Since no one does really talk about music, you usually don't get many suggestions outside of bauhaus or Souxie and the Banshees. After listening to this, I definitely have a list of bands to try out! Thank you for teaching the younger generation about actual goth music outside the same couple of bands everyone suggests.
All of it! Thank you!
Angela Benedict turns out I knew more about 80s goth music than I thought....loved this whole playlist.
Dear Angela Benedict
What would you say when people say's Cybergoth isn't Goth? Even some goth's I know say's they aren't goth. I even check online with other goth's around the world.. Most say's no. Plz If You Could Respond And Let Me Know How You Would Respond To That. It Would Help Me Alot.
Thank You So Much!!! 🖤🖤🖤
Toxic Alice well damn I was listening to goth music and didn't even no it back in the day.
Without music, life would be a mistake.
One of my favorite quotes.
Agreed my dark sister
DIY Darkling that’s an understatement.
DIY Darkling Nietzsche, right?
Ah yes, when life becomes a horror movie, and you realize every good movie needs a soundtrack.
The true essence of goth is in the music, all the fashion is just the bonus
Truth!
People who look goth somehow and listen to mother mother and mitzki, are ok for me. I like people who look how they like it, but I would not call them goth based on their looks. I would secretly call them alt-kids and laugh (secretly because I’m a real loner)
It just reminded me of an analogy.
I want to thank you both. I mostly listen to a lot of metal but since I started following you both I've discovered SO MANY amazing bands. Thank you!

I realized after watching this that there are a lot of bands that are goth that I like that I never knew were goth.
I live and breathe Switchblade symphony!
Sister's of Mercy's debut album is one of my favorite things in life. It is pure gold. Every single track just transports me to another dimension or puts me in some kind of trance. I can't describe it. But it's fucking great.
*Sisters. Punctuation matters.....
Type O negative is what got me into goth, fell in love right away. After that I expanded my horizons.
By the way what you did with your eyes and lips in this video is astonishing!
Possibly my favorite band. You've got great taste!
Same here
Same here!
Omg. I hated goth music to, but as time past I started to like it and now I'm here how lovely lol 🦇
Laughing jack i still don't like it very much... i'm still more into rock and metal stuff
but people in the community say"oh you don't listen metal thats not metal" same goes for rock... i think i'll just give up on genres
When I first heard Bela Lugosi's Dead my initial reaction was "wtf is this shit?" now it's one of my favorite songs...
I'm so picky with my music. Goth music is a mix bag for me. I do enjoy some oddball music, but I'm not sure if the ones I love falls into the goth genre. Like: Evanescence, My Chemical Romance, Within Temptation, and a few others.🖤😕
Same and I still can’t behind every band. I do enjoy a lot of what she included in this video though so I’m not completely hopeless 🤣🤣
*too
As a New Waver (if that's a thing) it is kinda weird/cool how _much_ a lot of goth and goth-adjacent music crosses over with stuff I already like or want to check out (I gotta get me into some darkwave), but nobody would call me goth unless I dressed in all black, which I usually don't. But yeah, if you're into synth stuff in general, both new and old...crossovers are gonna happen--according to this video, more often than I'd've thought.
Basically during the New Wave and New Romantic parts of the video I was sitting there going "I love that song, I love that song, that one's in my collection, so is that, not that exact one but something else from the same album..." XD
What I'm trying to say is thank you for an educational and interesting video, even if I am over three years too late.
Where do you live? Here in NY there's much to do in the ways of EBM and electronic sounds :)
I have been wanting to make a trip out there actually, I have heard really good things about the scene out there. I live in BC Canada currently. Working on relocating to California. I really love your channel! You do an awesome job. :)
Thanks so much!! There's a ton going on in Cali. I know there are events in Canada but it may be a trek.
Out of all the genres, I believe ethereal wave and synthpop might be my favorite one.
Thank you so much for referring Industrial, EBM and Synthpop as goth siblings because I actually felt guilty when I learnt that they're not goth music. Glad I never misinforming anyone else about that.
They are not goth genres but I think Angela B is saying these other genres have been played in goth spaces and it was acceptable.
When first listened to goth music I hated it too... the first band that got me into listening to goth music was Siouxsie and the Banshees
Lycia, Black Tape for a Blue Girl, Unto Ashes...great Darkwave and Ethereal.
Lol.. had the opposite thing. I only listened to the music and it took me a long time to get into the look
I've never got into the look LOL
Nothing wrong with that. The roots of it is in the music anyway.
Here's a few songs for anyone interested:
Type O Negative - Christian Woman
Draconian - The Morningstar
Theatre of Tragedy - The Masquerader and Phoinex
Black metal is another genre quite a few goths seems to enjoy, (at least it seems that way from the ones into metal) particularly the second wave style from the 90s. Black metal is pretty dark and aggressive for those not used to it but I think goths might be more inclined to enjoying it. Some songs would be:
Immortal - Withstand the Fall of Time
Dissection - Night's Blood
Emperor - The Burning Shadows of Silence
var 9 um you do understand that those bands are not aimed at goths like at all right?
@@emmanarotzky6565 a band similar to alcest is germ
Nah they’re a totally different thing; go to any goth club and you’ll never hear any form of metal music.
very lovely and detailed video!
Dead Can Dance from what I digged actually had a pretty big following in the states in the late 90s. :)
Ive been listening to dead can dance since i was about 16. Brendan and lisa's voices are amazing.
Finally somebody actually telling people it is all about the music not what they wear.
Would you do a video about your skincare?
Sorry if it is off topic but you have a very beautiful skin.
I totally agree with your concept of music/goth
brujaphoenix Seconded!
I third that opinion. I wished my skin looked that nice and flawless. I also wished I was better at makeup; but I kind of suck at it lol.
I fourth it!
A-ha is such an underated band. They are so good. And i am glad you incuded them. I really recomend everyone to give them a listen, especially to the Scoundrel days album
Faith and the Muse, Switchblade Symphony and This Ascension are some of my absolute faves 💜👌🏻
You have awesome taste!
Frozen autumn... just
Joy division's unknown pleasures is one of my favorite albums of all time, but I don't really like much more music in the goth category.
Goth is about the music.
@@reapgrimm2995 no one said otherwise.
She is such an inspiration!
Other people online have made me question my “goth” identity with their extreme aesthetic but your channel has assured me I’m still 100 percent goth girl deep down🖤
Agreed! She is my idol!
I'm familiar with a lot of Gothic music, but I'm so happy to learn so many new ones!!
Ah so glad I found this channel, loved rediscovering (and discovering) all these great bands.
So much dark and gooey goodness.
I just love a-ha. Their album Scoundrel days is much dark to me. My favorite band ever
I am not goth, but am making attempts to understand and respect the history.I really love the ethereal sound (also the never ending story song, love the movie xD )
I've wanted to be goth since I was 14 ,but was scared to express that.
I'm not either, but I like the music and the style.
Hope you hear and like them
my mom is a goth and i remember her playing some of these songs when i was a kid.back then it was just old music to me x)
bt now i listen to some of these and also more modern artists ..how cute
If you listen to Katy Perry, Britney Spears, and the like, and that is all you listen to, even if one enjoys the goth aesthetic, fashion wise, I am hesitant to call them "Goth."
PS Your lipstick looked amazing.
All this music gives me the warm fuzzies. Thanks for putting this together, Angela!
ahhh all the feels. I love this soooo much.
this was really cathartic as a goth that makes "modern new wave". lmao. it's fascinating how there's so much common ground under the goth umbrella.
Oooh, I like! Can I use one of your songs in a video? I'll promote it!
@@angelabenedict of course, kween
Something I love about your videos is that I very often rediscover old favourites thanks to you
There is so much great music in this video!
I really admire your style and philosophy. Thanks so much for the great music recs ❤️🥀💿
Brilliant! Thanks for including so many different sounds, there were some bands I hadn't actually heard of and I now need to go give them a listen ❤️ also that lipstick is beautiful! X
Love, love, love!!! This was absolutely brilliant! So much awesome music. Educate the masses. Once again you made your point wonderfully. Kudos!
It's just crazy how different people's experiences can be
And this is kind of videos that I appreciate! Lots of music, lots of interesting information. Good work!
For me, I definitely lean more towards new wave, dark wave, new romantic with a touch of synth pop. This was music I accumulated later in life though. I was a child of emo music though. No shame... well, a little shame 😂🖤
goldennight you should not be ashamed of Emo it has its own subculture. There is first wave and second wave.
I never thought that people would say about being the only "preppy" chick in a group of alliterative people. lol
Lovely, comprehensive video
Love this video Angela! Very instructive and (for me at least), nostalgic. The memories, the music, the hair! So, so much hair spray! Hahaha!
same for me , i was totally into grunge and punk ( but English punk, not californian!! ) ... i then Started loving Classic metal as iron maiden etc..... But i wAs always darkly inclined , started studying about magic and esoterism when i was 13 and always dressed goth but i Just could not get into some of the goth bands i had Been introduced to..... then i discovered BAUHAUS....And It wAs done !!!! You don t have to love sisters of Mercy....ther are so many other goth bands !!!!! so many !!!!! .....P.S i really enjoyed going thrue our Amazing world of music . thankyou ♥
"English punk, not Californian" . You really just excluded all the original USA punk?
@@acglover7349 Hi. I suppose i am not educated enough about the rest of american punk. Im not american . Here in italy for "californian punk" we intend all of those bands like offspring , blink etc. That are more melodic ; what i meant was that i prefer the more "trashy" part of the punk world. Music is soooo complex that there will always be someone that nows something more than you... i simply love music... from The Doors , Pink Floyd, led zeppelin ....passing by Nirvana , radiohead... Iron Maiden , sepultura, Brujeria...all the way to Bauhaus , the cure and joy division.
omg! BERLIN! and here I thought no one remembered them. One of my favs.
And the last record wasn't even half bad ua-cam.com/video/KTldBSvnhlY/v-deo.html
I'll never get tired of Terri Nunn.
I live this since I met some of these bands and I am glad people still appreciate their work!
I meant love ❤️. There are some bands that don’t even get goth cred but people love them! I never hear their music at the clubs tho. Evør is one of my faves. Stay on the pulse to be undead 🧟♂️.
I remember being quite young (about 10) I started to become very interested in gothic stuff mostly clothes then movies and architecture but I HATED most of the music like it was 1 good song per band and they got old quick, then around 13 I found emo music and I LOVED IT and the fashion of scene and emo was so cool to me but then I found nine inch nails and later on babymetal and gravitated back towards goth, mostly industrial but also hints of Lolita, grunge, emo or hippie stuff, anyway I just thought I'd share that because this seemed like an appropriate video for it also ive seen some of your videos a long time ago but I hadn't subscribed until now, I'm on a binge and I've gotta say keep up the good work 👌
Thank you so much for your comment and kind words! I love hearing about peoples journey's.
I recommended exploring such artists as Assemblage 23 and The Crüxshadows.
Crüxshadows is my fave
I
Thanks for the list! Looks like I've been listening to multiple genres of goth music all along :D
Happy I found this channel.
Such a likable personality.
Thank you 🖤🖤🖤
This is my ultimate fantasy-having a beautiful woman invite me to her house, and we sit & drink coffee while she plays me her favorite goth bands.Thank you Angela!
I'm happy you enjoyed it!
Whaaat the heaaaaak? ;)
Goth rock is the best rock. I prefer Gothic rock and darkwave over industrial 🖤🖤🖤
mama you never fail!! i was just looking for this exact thing thank you
I would like to thank Angela benedict for introducing me to Faith and the muse & Switchblade symphony, Drac makens for Sisters of mercy, Black Friday for Suspiria and The count (cemetery confessions) for The Awakening. I'm glad I found so much music I love from here. 🖤
OH MY GOTH!!! I'm more Goth than I realized!!!!
what about the Cure or Siouxsie and the Banshees?
Keir Taylor Definitely Post-Punk and loved by many Goths. 👻❤️
The Cure and SATBs had goth albums, it's just that the majority of their disco falls somewhere else.
But you have to be deaf to label Cure's Pornography and SATB's Juju anything else than at least Gothic Rock-ish
I feel that’s the most obvious one.
I’m pretty sure she tried to stay away from the more popular bands, since they are the bands that many listen to and think that is all
Thank you for this
It's so important to show clips of the music that people are missing out on
And I know that takes time and effort on your part to put together
So thanks again
Thanks for this video. It's nice to hear the many different sounds and learn more about each of these types of gothic music.
Do you have a Spotify account with playlists we can follow?
Anna Griffith She has a UA-cam playlist, or more than one I'm not sure. But I remember that's how I found Frozen Autumn.
I have a ton of them :) I kept making more so I decided to get specific with the subgenres and just keep adding to them. There's a lot more there :)
Angela Benedict How can I find you on Spotify?
I wanna know this! I love your collection!
I was wondering the same! Hey Angela, are you on Spotify? Wonderful video btw 🖤
Flock of seagulls - Wishing :)
Yeah, I goofed. It was late and I was tired :/
Great video! Thanks for giving a guideline for each type of music. I grew up listening to 80s music and even though I knew that* new wave, new romantic, post punk and dark wave all had different sounds I would hear people call it all new wave. I'm glad you're shedding light and spreading knowledge :)
Thanks for this video, it helped me broaden my musical horizons and be reminded of some favourites
Drab Majesty ❤️❤️❤️
I loved Aha
Apple Phillips i also love a-ha the best of the best of new wave i still love their music
I absolutely love goth music wasn't hard for me to get into as I started a metalhead at 11 and am still a fan of goth and extreme metal I fuse two together suites me well in my opinion 😃❤ love ur channel hun😍❤
Oh a question would metal count as goth music being it's a alternative side of music 😮
No metal is not goth, however, metal is extremely popular among goths nonetheless. Peter Steele of Type O Negative was influenced by Black Sabbath and metal is also undeniably is very dark, in fact it was the first music in modern times to use dark and horror as a musical influence before even goth.
Daya Autum I agree with u love thx for input 😃❤ there alot of awesome Gothic metal bands too🙂
Yes there are metal goth bands :).
Daya Autum that is absolutely true 😇😄❤ there also bands like
Type o negative Tristania
Lord of lost
Gothminister
Deathstars
Moonspell
Woods of ypres
Draconian
Batushka
And many more 😃 but what u say is absolutely true with the difference guess it's why there two separate genres 😄❤ thx for ur input hun 😇❤
You should go give "A Pale Horse Named Death", "The Bronx Casket Co." and "Poisonblack" a listen.
I wonder what you think of a few of the "darker" bands from germany, I personally do like... Like "Oomph", "Lord of the Lost" or "Unheilig". Have you heard of them, because I wonder how known they are globally...
I'm in the US and listen to Lord of the Lost. Haven't heard of Oomph or Unheilig, though, thank you!
@@darthapple87 Yay, glad you could find something new. Let me know what you think of them! ;)
@@jaqulinedittmann4106 Geboren um zu leben was the first one I listened to! Thank you for the translation of the band name!
I love your channel thanks for making this video its kinda helpful knowing the types of musics
