Age Like A Goth | Esthetician Skincare Routine

  • I'm a licensed esthetician and this is my skincare routine based on my specific needs which is focused on my auto-immune disorder and dehydrated skin condition. This is not a substitute for medical advice so if you're experiencing any issues that go beyond the esthetic, it's best to consult a physician. Why is it goth? Welp, I avoided the sun since I was 14 and pounded the sunscreen whenever I was exposed to sunlight so I could look as close to a transparent vampire as possible. The other side of that is by avoiding the sun I was also protecting myself against premature aging.

      Hi Angela. Goth Elder here, first generation Male. We lived through the fires of Punk and from its ashes we emerged as the first born Goths. We spent our lives in battles and Wars holding the line, and gaining ground. We laid the foundations everyday for the great Gothic Cathedrals to be built and now where we dwell. It does my heart good to listen to you speak in our tongue and to see what you and our daughters have done and accomplished. The lines are now yours to hold. Hold them strong, for this is always in our hearts ..... it is our Soul

    I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s when I was 15. I still struggle to find the perfect skincare routine even though it’s been 12 years since my diagnosis lol. I have several other health problems that dehydrate me too, and doctors tend to omit the fact that many medications for autoimmune conditions are extremely drying. I was lucky to discover very early that Korean, Japanese and Chinese skincare tended to be much gentler on my skin than Western products, which stripped it bare and left it raw and flaky. I always attributed it to the fact East Asian countries have a larger ban list for toxic ingredients used in skincare, therefore they aren’t as harsh. The ingredients that have never failed me and make my skin happiest are hyaluronic acid, green tea, tea tree and aloe. Everything else tends to be too drying, but be careful not to overdo the tea tree or it may dry you out too. I have extremely sensitive skin as well, so perhaps others that are sensitive to inflammation may find success with the ingredients I mentioned. I wish you well in the journey ahead. It can be so frustrating to ride it out until you’re stabilized, but I promise it gets better. You may want to keep your levels ever so slightly “hyperthyroid” under the supervision of a doctor. That was the only way I saw improvement with my symptoms. Some endocrinologists may be weird about that, but mine is great in that regard. Good luck and thanks for always putting out such great content ♥️

    • @angelabenedict
      @angelabenedict  2 роки тому +7

      Wow, so you caught it early! The highs and lows are certainly a roller coaster I'd much rather not be on. Makes sense since I hate roller coasters. I really agree with you on the East Asian skin care. They tend to focus more on hydrating and nourishing ingredients which is truly beneficial to people with dehydrated and sensitive skin types. I'm just like you with the ingredients. I've had to mix the tea tree oil for the same reason that you mentioned as it really drives me out. Ceramides have really helped me and I'm really upset because Elizabeth Arden used to make this ceramide essence that was amazing! I mean it really worked wonders on my skin and they discontinued it. They do have these ceramide ampules that work really well but they're a bit pricey. I used to get them for free all the time since I worked for Elizabeth Arden as an esthetician. I miss that! When it comes to things like inflammation I find Avene xeracalm works quite well as I do have bouts of eczema. Since diagnosis I've been getting it randomly. I've cut out gluten as per the research on glutens effect on thyroxine peroxidase production and I was truly hoping that it would and wouldn't work. I wanted it to work because obviously I want to bring down my antibodies and go into remission but at the same time I didn't because that would mean giving up my beloved New York pizza, bagels, donuts basically everything gluten because as it turns out that's where the deliciousness lives. Needless to say, since going gluten free I had my antibodies tested every 5 months and every 5 months it went down by half. Two years ago I was 900 Plus my most recent check had me at 177. So damn it to hell if it didn't work. Rest in peace beloved New York City Pizza. I also incorporate high quantities of probiotic and prebiotic foods as there's been evidence to show that restoring your gut microbiome also has a positive impact on treatment and recovery of autoimmune disorders. I added in vitamin d, coenzyme q10, iron and vitamin d. So far so good! I will say though, the random bouts of inflammation for no damn reason can kiss my butt in Macy's window.

      @@angelabenedict Those are great recommendations, I’ll have to try them out! Skincare was kind of a burden at first especially because dryness can be a constant fight, but honestly now it helps me de-stress and feel like I’m pampering myself. And don’t even get me started on discontinued miracle products. I loathe when that happens, and as the universe seems intent on making life difficult, it happens often. Vitamin D and probiotics were life changing for me. I got colds and flus much less frequently once I started them too. I tried gluten free as well, but in my case it seemed to be meat was more of a problem. I had so much trouble going vegetarian because I’m part Italian and it meant basically every childhood food was either out of the question or had to be adapted. My mom and dad were both great when I was still young in helping make comfort foods still taste like comfort foods. My antibody count used to be over 3000, and it took years for it to come down, but it started to improve once I was able to commit to the vegetarian thing. Salt and sugar are also nightmares for my inflammation, and damn I miss being able to just have the things I used to eat without a second thought. There’s so much about this disease that people don’t get. It impacts literally every function in your body. It was hard mentally coming to terms with the fact that it seemed everyone around me took absolutely everything for granted. Things that I could no longer do or have, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant. I’m better now, but there’s always moments. I mean, Hashimoto’s itself causes anxiety and depression. I was sent to a psychiatrist before I got diagnosed because they didn’t believe that anything was wrong with me physically since “little girls make up pain for attention”. I won’t go into how much the healthcare system sucks and how shitty doctors can be, because I’d be here forever, but I’m sure you probably have relatable experiences. As much as I’m genuinely saddened by what you’ve been through, it’s comforting to know there are others out there who have been fighting this battle too. There’s strength in solidarity. It helps keep me going even when my physical and mental reserves have been exhausted. I’m glad to hear you’re doing better, and I honestly hope things continue to improve for you. You’re such a positive influence and I’ve always looked up to you and admired your strength and kindness. I’ve always seen my health issues as a battle, and I can either give in to the enemy, or I can bite the bullet and keep fighting. None of us are in this fight alone, even though it feels like it sometimes. Thanks for everything you do, and keep giving life hell 🖤

I’m glad your getting good treatment which we all deserve but sadly some of us aren’t getting much help makes me feel so sad

      @@ratqueen3809 I tried a meat heavy diet for quite some time in my teens, but I personally felt terrible on it. I’m not offended by the suggestion at all, so don’t worry! Cutting out sugar obviously works well for me too, as well as sticking to more whole grains and organic products. I don’t eat a ton of grains in my every day like I used to. I avoid endocrine disrupters like the plague wherever possible. I have food allergies and sensitivities too so I don’t have as much freedom with my diet as most people. I’ve been on pretty much every elimination diet under the sun since my teens under the supervision of dieticians and doctors, and the only reason I’m reluctant to try switching up my diet now is because my thyroid has been very stable for about four years now. I don’t want to mess with that, and it’s a delicate balance, since adjusting my treatment for my thyroid can negatively impact the other health problems I have. It’s a very delicate situation trying to placate each individual health problem without throwing the other ones into chaos. I hope it isn’t as difficult for most people with Hashimoto’s to find balance, but I have over ten other autoimmune disorders that make it incredibly difficult. I appreciate where you’re coming from and I’m glad that worked so well for you! I hope you continue to feel better!

      @joco4268 2 роки тому +1

      @@londonleela6769 I’m so sorry to hear that. My endo used to be very abrupt, invalidating and apathetic. It took years of me seeing him and him having a front seat to the roller coaster ride that was my health for him to take me seriously and help. I’m very grateful he changed, and since then he’s been absolutely wonderful. Sometimes he’s the only doctor that listens to me now lol. I wonder if there are any other doctors in the area that would help you? Sometimes my GP is really good about adjusting medication doses prescribed by other specialists I’m seeing if I can’t get an appointment soon enough, or if a particular doctor is not listening to me. I hope you can find a solution, but there are lots of people here that can at least offer you emotional support. It makes me cry sometimes to think there are so many of us that suffer like this. I’m doing better personally in terms of my thyroid, but a few of my other health problems have been giving me absolute hell for three years now. The pandemic has put so much on hold as well, making it so hard to get proper medical attention and help for all of us. Doctors are also burnt out, so I’ve noticed most of mine have a very poor bedside manner as a result. It doesn’t make it right, but it’s an explanation for some of their behaviour, at least within the last couple years. I try to remind myself of that when I’m not being treated very kindly. I wish you all the best, and stay strong. I know it’s hard, and it’s ok to break down and feel the heaviness of it all sometimes. Just make sure you get back up again. We’re all rooting for you ♥️

    After your video I decided to try out the Klorane water cream, and I cannot thank you enough for sharing this! Unfortunately I am on budget so I cannot go all out with my skincare as I'd like- but this cream does miracles for my incredibly dry skin. It has only been a few days yet I already notice such a dramatic difference especially on my forehead! I struggle with very very dry and sentitive skin and have since I came out of the womb- most ''hydrating creams'' always would leave a greasy layer on my skin but always seemed to just stay on the surface. Klorane actually absorbs (quite fast too!), doesn't leave a layer of oil and my skin actually feels so hydrated and nice from the inside. It's a relief I haven't ever felt and I have tried so many things, even from the doctors. Thank. you. so. much. :) (I combine it with the ordinary hyaluronic acid 2% + B5 serum) and am looking into getting the Haruharu WONDER Black Rice hyaluronic toner soon

Supposedly, I'm "evened out", but there are things that don't show up and I suspect tests haven't caught the full extent of it. I also have reptile skin. I definitely need to look into some of these products. I'll be 40 next year, and my skin started getting drier a year or two ago, mostly on my forehead. I'm also starting to get some sagging that I'm having trouble accepting, but that's where my genetics tend toward--less wrinkling, more drooping. The executive function difficulties I have due to mental illness make keeping self-care routines excruciatingly difficult, though. I might manage to do everything for a week or two, but then I skip one day for xyz reason and never get back on track. :S

      There's two types of agers. Your wrinklers and your saggers. Saggers tend to be those who have Fuller faces to begin with. Fortunately sagging is much easier to treat than wrinkling is. There is a treatment called ultherapy that's non-invasive but very effective. It uses ultrasound and ultrasonic waves that basically just ablate fatty tissue utilizing thermal methods as well. It also stimulates collagen. Ever wonder why people like Gwen Stefani is like 50 and she has a snatched jaw line? Ultherapy.

      Oh wow, I'm so happy to hear that! Glad it was helpful! It's such a common mistake to make because the symptoms of both are identical and it's a reasonable connection to make. If your skin is dry you moisturize it. When that doesn't work it's confusing because that's what you do with dry skin. Just changing up the carrier from cream to water is a total game changer.

    @Angela Benedict, as an esthetician myself I totally understand the benefits of hyaluronic acid but I kind of was surprised to not see within the products that you use polyglomatic acid like from the inky list because it holds even more water than hyaluronic does and where with your hashimoto's and having to contend with dehydrated skin I was surprised to you didn't have something like that in your regiment. That is actually one of my favorites but that's also because I live in a lower humidity type of environment in my building and I struggled to keep the humidity at an optimal level and one thing that I haven't seen you touch upon here is talking the difference about hyaluronic acid versus sodium halloranate which yes they're both the same thing but one's High molecular weight and one's low molecular weight and if you use too much hyaluronic acid and you're in a low humidity environment it can pull from deeper layers. The benefit though of course being that you're using so many water-based product that should help counteract that but if others are struggling with similar skin issues and live in a lower humidity environment it might be counterintuitive. And I'm not judging by any means or anything like that I just like I said was surprised not to see something like the polyglomatic acid in your regiment. And being that I'm also in my 40s skin hydration is definitely key to making it stay youthful as well as keeping it calm

    Bit complicated for me. Since my Hashimotos diagnosis I've just dealt with the skin issues by using a dead sea salt mineral scrub to get rid of dry skin on the surface and then some(preferably paraben free) lotion with aloe to soak back in. Can't do much for my face because of having a full beard, but been using a cooling beard cream with mint in it and been meaning to start using beard tonics and serums. A big concern of mine as of late has been the fact that I ALSO have Vitiligo. I'm pale enough that it doesn't make a visual difference, but the patches of skin without pigmentation do get very irritated very easily, making them turn pinkish and puffy. Only really a big concern for the skin on the backs of my hands, back and side of my head, and elbows. Still haven't found a way to deal with that.

      @@angelabenedict Arf, sorry dear, I haven't seen your answer. Funny you said that. For my skin, it's quite the opposite. CeraVe is ideal for my face, not so much for my body. Fortunately, I would not go so far as to say that it is detrimental. I would just say it doesn't do anything. It's just as useless as water. Fortunately, I no longer have the same requirement for that body as I used to. It's especially my face, neck and some parts of the arms that still bother me and a lot sometimes.
      Until last year, CBD products worked wonders for my face and body. I had to quit for a few weeks and when I switched to CeraVe the CBD suddenly went mute. Idk why..
      I completely agree with the fact that no one reacts exactly the same way to products intended for the same type of skin problem. Everyone champions water sprays to keep the face hydrated for instance. Personally, I react allergically to this.. even though it's just water..

    Thank you for making this. I feel you on the puffy face stuff. Did you know if you lose too much iron and can't hold onto it, you will start to have hypothyroidism that is correctable so long as you just get more iron in you. I'm so sensitive to pharma that 25mcg of levothyroxine made me exhibit symptoms of hyperthyroidism in two months (WORST thyroid storm ever. just constant sweats, and panic attacks, vertigo, etc etc. heart palpitations horrible) so my endocrinologist was like "Your body is stressed from iron and blood loss you just need to stop the bleeding on blood thinners and hold onto iron continuously bc your thyroid is going up and down rapidly and medication will not fix it. you do not have a thyroid disorder." so yea. Even though I have gluten intolerance, Celiac Disease, I do not have hashimoto's or actual hypothyroidism. It's all iron loss. It's just amazing how important iron is for thyroid function. So point being. Please also get your iron levels, ferritin and iron saturation especially, checked.
    On a positive note: you do not look like you're even in your 30's so while i get compliments very similarly I'm still buying a few things you recommended bc I'm extremely fair, more fair than you are and I have a feeling, they are going to be amazing products. @@londonleela6769 You need to get feraheme iron IV's I can't absorb iron through my gut. It took 34 yrs until I became iron deficient due to blood thinners. Prior I was getting just enough in my diet. Animal sources are best. Eat a tiny amt of lean beef, organic, a few times a week. Do not do so after heavy exercise or take any iron supplement after heavy exercise bc your adrenal hormones reduce absorption. Getting iron directly into your veins is best. You will bloat, retain fluid, may feel fatigue and some stomach pains so ask them to give it to you with IV fluids. Get it administered over 30 mins instead of 15. I get 500mg twice a week every month, once a month for a total of 1000mg. I however use a lot of iron. You sweat it out, use it for muscle building etc. I am very athletic. Once you get to a healthy level your body will stop the inflammatory process and you will have minimal bloating and flu like symptoms. So don't be scared. It's normal. Our bodies have a billion mechanisms to prevent toxicity overload of iron. When you are defficient it takes your body a bit to 'reboot' and figure out what to do with it. Other symtoms of low iron include muscle pain, and nerve pain, mood instability, insomnia, hair loss, brittle nails, shadows under eyes, visible veins on face, jaudice, etc.
      So for me once my iron went from a 2 (normal starting range for a woman is like 50 lol) to about a 20 my body started to feel "safe" with the ferritin level so no more need for levo. So first get your levels checked, everything, trans- and ferritin so you can tell how you metabolize ferritin. If you do not metabolize ferritin efficiently your transferrin will be low. So this is what binds and transports iron. Ferritin is basically the protein that stores iron it's your blood iron stores that become usable iron to make happy blood cells with. When you get that up, your body releases that based on how well your body metabolizes iron. So if your transferrin is high, that' GREAT that means your body is over compensating. So for example. My body will go from hemoglobin 14 (healthy) to 6 in 3 days on my blood thinners. I will recoup that blood loss in 2 weeks or less if I have enough ferritin bc my transferrin is over 400, 500 most times. Normal values fall in 200-300 range. Each lab is different.

    Thanks for sharing your routine. You're so incredibly knowledgable. I know the ordinary is cruelty free but do you have any recommendations for the other products? My skin is super dry and I could use some creamier moisturizers and toners. Also, would love to see more of dressing like songs videos. They are so neat and I love your song choices.
    Edit: Also, I've heard you're not supposed to use mechanical exfoliation on your face as it can be too abrasive. At least that's what I've heard from dermatologists. Just thought I'd share :)

    • @angelabenedict
      @angelabenedict  2 роки тому

      If you're looking for a creamier moisturizers I recommend embryolisse lait creme concentrate. It's very rich and hydrating. Babors products are not only cruelty free but they're highly sustainable as they use recycled water, run by solar and have worked hard to reduce their carbon footprint. As far as the mechanical exfoliation, it's fine so long as it's done mindfully. Oftentimes the issue with mechanical exfoliation arises when they're talking about mechanically exfoliating cleansers. They can be quite problematic for example St Ives uses crushed peach pits and walnut shells which are not buffered at all and contain sharp edges which create micro tears in the skin and allow bacteria to get in. The others use micro exfoliating beads that do not dissolve in water and are pollution risk when introduced to the ocean. The gloves that I use for example I use quite gently and focus on areas around the corners of the nose, mentalis which is just under the chin where blackheads accumulate and temples. So long as you're gentle it's quite effective and safe.

    I've been recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism but for years, probably from before I even had my thyroid levels tested, I've found I need a *lot* of water to be able to walk normally (also diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my 30s but I suspect it was missed for years before then and it was a condition both my parents had), round about the 5-6 litres a day mark. My skin also goes through cycles of oiliness and dryness, more so on certain areas of my face, feet, hands and legs. Last year I bought a jar of Aurelia London Miracle Cleanser and that's really nice and very gentle. I've also got a few of their other products and I'd recommend them all, especially the Balance & Purify Citrus Cleanser and Balancing Ultra-Light Moisturiser for anyone with combination skin. Their Revitalise & Glow Serum is lovely as well and you use such a small amount each time 2-3 drops, I think) that even though the bottle is tiny, it lasts a long time. The Miracle Cleanser comes with a bamboo muslin cloth to clean off the cleanser and that also gives a bit of an exfoliation to your face because of its texture. Many of their products are also probiotic. I've used quite a few of The Ordinary products as well and really like them, plus, you don't have to pay through the nose for them.
    Something that some people might find helpful as well is making their own Golden Milk drinks. When I make it I use plant-based milk alternatives (a mix of almond and coconut is really nice) and float a bit of cold-pressed hemp oil on the surface. It's a pleasant-tasting warm drink and because it's all natural stuff you're not putting any preservatives into your body with it and the oil, I've found, helps my skin and my joints, but making the turmeric paste that you use in the drink can be time-consuming and you have to make a new batch each week because each batch will only stay fresh enough to last for a week, which can get frustrating as time goes on.

      Oh my goodness, I am so sorry to hear that! All of these medical issues do take its toll on your skin. Your skin is a really good marker for how you're doing health-wise. Unhealthy people are dry, their complexion is quite sallow and overall dull in appearance. Healthy people glow. I've always used skin as a benchmark to what's going on in my body. And I can always tell when I'm coming down with something because my skin takes a hit.

      I apply The Ordinary Hyalauronic twice daily. Once in my morning routine and once at night and my routine is the same for both am and pm. The only difference is I use the sunscreen in the am. I tend to do this within 20 minutes of waking up.

    • @angelabenedict
      @angelabenedict  2 роки тому +1

      I've heard that as well but it seems a bit overkill to me. If you're primarily perched in front of a window where the sun is blaring through, I can see why that would be necessary but otherwise you should be fine without.

    I always feel unsatisfied while using hyaluronic acid. I might go back to it at some point, but for now I prefer beta-glucan, it gives an immediate hydrating effect. I use ìunik's serum.

    • @angelabenedict
      @angelabenedict  2 роки тому +4

      Everyone's skin is different so where is hyaluronic acid might work for me maybe it's not the best product for you but then again it's always with how you use it. A lot of people use a product but if you're not using it correctly it can be counterintuitive. For example you always want to be applying hyaluronic acid to damp skin. It's a water loving product and holds a thousand times it's weight in water so when it pulls water into it if you're applying it to dry skin the only place it's going to get that water from is your skin so it's actually going to dry your skin out more by pulling water out of your skin. Apply it to damp skin and then go that extra step forward and miss your face with a bit of water and massage it in.

    Question: when it comes to sunscreen, so you put that on fist, then makeup. I was always taught it has a 2!hr life and then reapply. So when you already have makeup on how do you reapply. I work indoors for 8.5, so I’m protected on the way to work, but what do I do after??

    • @angelabenedict
      @angelabenedict  2 роки тому +1

      I put it on first and then the makeup over it which also has SPF content in it. They make an SPF spray now if you plan to be in the sun longer than it's half life which you can Spritz right over your makeup.

    How do you feel about micro needling? I've heard its great to get collagen formation and wrinkle reduction.

    • @angelabenedict
      @angelabenedict  2 роки тому +3

      I'm still on the fence about it. I'd be concerned with those who scar easily and even if it's mildly invasive you're opening yourself up to potential damage/infecion. The reason that I say this is because of it's new focus on home use and putting it in unskilled hands. With things like that result in puncturing the skin, you really want that to be performed by a professional. I used to perform this treatment but slightly differently as it had to be done in accordance with my license. It was essentially a blunt pen used in an S shape motion throughout the face. I think when looking into anti-aging treatments we need to establish if your aging is in fact aging and not diet/nutrient related, dehydrated skin and what type of aging you're experiencing. You're either a wrinkler or a sagger. Once we get a handle on that, the next course of action is finding the treatment that's tailored to your needs. Sometimes it's not always microneedling, sometimes it can be. It's down to the individual.

      I had a chemical bleach burn on my scalp from a hair dye job gone wrong, hair never grew back. Then I used gin ambers derma roller, the hair came back. My sister also had a faint frown line and made it disappear after a few months using the derma roller daily. So they definitely work on at least some people like us.
