  • Buddha's Delight (Lo Han Jai 罗汉斋) - How to make it for Lunar New Year
    Today I want to share with you our secret family recipe of our family, the Buddha’s delight (a.k.a Lo Han Jai 罗汉斋). This recipe has passed down from my mother in law who has been cooking this dish during every Chinese New Year for the past six decades. She is now in her eighties, and this is the time that we will take over her work to prepare it for this coming lunar new year.
    Buddha’s delight is a delightful vegetarian dish savor by everyone during the Chinese New Year (Lunar New Year.) Lo Han Jai 罗汉斋 is another name for Budda’s delight. (Jai, or sometimes spells as Zhai, literally means a vegetarian meal for the Buddhist).
    There are many variation sprouts from the authentic recipe. Many people find that it is too tedious to get all the ingredients, and therefore omit some components without sacrificing the flavor.
    Here is the link to the article (and the full recipe:

    Thank you for making this! Now I'm going to try to learn to make my FAVORITE chinese food. Ingredients shouldn't be too hard to get (I'm in Hawaii, if you've been here - it's practically Asia 😅)

    I realize it’s not the same - but they sell a mix of most ingredients here in a can. Very tasty for a quick meal.

    why is it no garlic or green onion sprinkled on top to enhance the color of the dish?....is it because green onion and garlic are considered non-vegetarian?

      @TasteofAsianFood  5 років тому +3

      I can't give you a definite answer. But pure Buddhist monks do not eat garlic. Perhaps this may be the reason. This is not only for my family recipe, but all other similar recipes do not include spring onions and garlic too.

      @@TasteofAsianFood Can you please explain why pure monks don't eat garlic? Is it because of the strong smell or something else? I'm a little bit curious and I would really appreciate it if you can explain 😉

      @@queenisha1985 I am not a Buddhist but I do know that this is mentioned in one of the Sutra called 楞严经. Hence, strict practitioner will follow what is mentioned in the Buddhism sutra.
