A small place I used to go to, had something friends called Vitamin Soup. It was made for frequent customers and had Lotus root, amongst other vegetables and things I didn't recognize. Very flavorful, but light..... not sure if you know what I'm talking about? The other thing I love there was salt and pepper pork.

Turnip is 大頭菜 and the english translation of the video subject is not correct. It should be radish cake as a Singaporean viewer has pointed out

For me, they represent my whole upbringing. We only spoke Cantonese in the house and knew other Cantonese families, but that past is gradually going away for me, as I'm more Americanized but still wish to retain my Canto-side. These videos are like a record of that culture I grew up in, and a way for me to reconnect.

Overall, I enjoyed watching the family ambiance that you all gather around the table and share the tasty meal that your dad prepared and light hearted conversation as well!!!👍👍👍

I’ve made this twice now and it is truly the most delicious turnip cake I’ve ever had - so much better than any I’ve had in restaurants! The recipe is perfect. The
The hardest thing is the wait until cool enough to cut.
It is a really comforting dish and the amount in this recipe is enough to freeze some portions. I froze slices separated by non-stick paper so I can take out as many slices as I want which will be fried. I’d encourage anyone who hasn’t had turnip cake to try this. It’s so more-ish.

On another note, I found this channel on Subtle Canto Traits, and as a 1st gen ABC trying to learn more about my culture and cook my favorite foods growing up, this channel truly is amazing. It makes me a little emotional just watching these videos and seeing how you are preserving these family traditions for your son hits home for me as I envision how I want to pass on the same traditions to my future children with my fiance. I am so thrilled over how my turnip cake turned following Mr Lau’s instruction! I had followed a few turnip cake recipes from other cooks and my turnip cakes either turned out bland or hard like a brick! When l watched Mr Lau preparing his turnip cake, l knew he was legit. His turnip cake turned out the texture l wanted! Although l am a vegetarian so l do without the meat. I wanted a plain turnip cake anyway. Thanks Mr Lau and your family. They asked very helpful questions that helped.

One might be able to use chayote / christophene / xuxu / choko as a substitute. It also has a mild and quite neutral taste like Chinese turnip. Here in Malaysia, we sometimes see this vegetable julienned and stir-fried with dried shrimps and that makes a great veggie dish.
