Nice to see comparative data between related hardware. Nice upgrade! Still on the fence between this and Odin 2. What is the better out of the box experience? prone to fail? screen quality?
They are both great, but the Odin is more powerful and not pocketable. The RP4 is in its entirety the same size as a galaxy S22 plus and is quite powerful, but not quite as powerful as the Odin. the RP4Pro is $200 and the Odin 2 Pro is $300. Basically, if you want a pocket device, nothing is as good as the RP4Pro at the moment, but if you want a small non-pocketable carry device, the Odin is the way.
Honestly idk why i watch your videos anymore half of them have editing mistakes that you dont care enough to fix. Text being clear so you can't read it or posting "benchmarks" from games yet it says a amd cpu when the device clearly has a intel cpu id advise anyone making decisions on buying stuff based on his opinion to look at other reviews cause he honestly doesn't care and is just chasing the bag
I wanted an Android one, for some ZX Speccy emulation, the emu i use on my phone is great and can actually boot the games, whereas some games in Retroarch i struggle tl get key mappings done for some games
This thing looks so awesome but I always get confused by watching multiple reviews. One reviewer (Retro game corp) was running every Gamecube and PS2 game at 2X resolution no problem but then over here you’re having to go to 0.6 resolution to get it to run. I’m wondering why different channels are getting different results
ETA is wrong on this one. I have one and while it's not perfect there is 0 reason GC to be under 1X and honestly everything I tried works at 2X without much tweaking. I guess at least he under sells it but he is still miles off the mark
There are several possible reasons. 1) he left the device in the wrong power configuration and forgot to try high performance mode 2) he used the wrong versions / forks of emulators that are not optimised for this hardware 3) he didn't actually test this for a month since he's so busy with the other products, life, family, etc. so he's missing information that everyone else already picked up on weeks ago.
How about ergonomics? Igot a Pocket 3 when first released but find it hard to do dual analogs mainly due to low left stick placement. Does this feel better? Looks pretty similar
@@bwp6v Very true, I don't have a retroid but I have a nitro deck which a lot of people say sucks because of the left stick, but after using it for a bit and getting cramps I just had to adjust how I was holding it and it's fine now.
It's he only thing that holds me from getting this. I'm waiting for a revision with left stick on top. Needing a grip beats the purpose of pocketability.
Awesome review as always. But I am curious, why there is no review for the non-plus version yet? Or there is no much difference between the two? Many thanks.
Most people say if you're going to get one at all just drop the extra 50 and get the pro model. For the things most people want it for, using PS2 and gamecube, you'll need the extra grunt. that's probably why you aren't seeing many non pro impressions. Then again the non pro is still a decent upgrade over the RP3.
I may have a theory for your weird results on GC/PS2 as im getting better GC/PS2 performance on my Retroid 2S. Could it be related to Retroids FPS overlay you are using in the video? From my experience don't rely on it! as it gives inaccurate results (first noticed it with new build of PS1 duckstation emulator) always check FPS with a emulators in-app FPS counter i find. For example the Retroid FPS overlay tells me duckstation is dropping FPS but the in-app counter is locked to 60. Hope that helps.
One can hope, I mean there's only so far we can get with the current systems on Android since the software is the real bottleneck. At a certain point without new software the only thing that will get better performance is a stronger device and that's where they'll hit a wall in price to performance before it demands someone step up and make better emulators.
I'm just waiting for something that will emulate up to pcsx3/xemu for $200-$250 but is also pretty compact. I already have a Steam Deck but it's massive. Probably a few more years but we're getting there.
Not really. It seems Retroid learned their mistakes from the 3 and 3+. They announced the weaker base 4 and 4 Pro at the same time, then sold only the 4 Pro first.
The only version of dolphins that lets you downscale is “dolphins for handheld” which is why you’re getting bad performance. I just use the one from the play store and haven’t had any issues with any GameCube games
He is great! I love his reviews, one of my four favorites. He definitely knows what he is talking about. Every handheld that is made should be looked at as a good thing! If you love retro games, you will love most of these handhelds!! Thank you, Prime!!
It's not bad but as things change so quickly, I don't actually think that this will be quite as popular as at first imagined. It seems that it just doesn't quite run what many may have hoped for from day one.
He is just bad at testing. He's using out dated emulators and not adjusting the drop down. This is embarrassingly bad review. Not shilling but it can do 90% of GameCube at 2x without issue. This is 100% user error on his part
It looks cool and all. but if you can afford to pay money for an android that can't make calls. might as well pay extra and get the better value device Odin pro 2
I thought this was a fair review and I feel it was worth my time watching. I'm happy to see that Retroid sent you a good one. Even so, I'm thinking that if I abandon my Android phone + GameSir emulation setup for a reasonably priced handheld any time soon I'd be better served by the RG556. I'm surprised at how poorly GameCube emulation ran. I'm not sure now if other reviewers are blowing smoke or if you had a very unoptimized configuration. PS2 looked great though and, unpopular opinion, that matters much more to me. Thanks for trying "Colin McRae Rally '03". It's one of my favorites too. In the PSP section I noticed that the skybox in "Sega Rally Revo" was glitched out of existence. I beat that game many years ago on original PSP hardware with the UMD drive happily whirring away. The skybox was never flat black. I haven't felt compelled to revisit it with emulation; is that a common glitch with that game or maybe something to do with Mali GPUs?
I was able to figure out how to switch to retro vs Xbox controller by input however I set the “Retriod pocket controller” as my controller but none of the controls are working when I play a game. Apparently, I would need to setup the profile for each controller mode as each controller has a driver built into Retroids OS. I see the profiles options but how do I set up the profile Xbox vs Retriod?
@@JosephFrietzeThe RG556! Anbernic RG556 all day. Even if it's not as powerful as the 4Pro, it's powerful enough for most things and is much better everywhere else that counts. The screen is much better, the ergonomics are much better, and it couldn't possibly be as poorly built as early Pocket 4s seem to be. The only currently known potential downside of the Anbernic is that it's not as pocketable as the Pocket 4.

The R2 trigger spring is prone to fail, causing it to be flaccid. Retroid addressed this within a week of it being reported and said all orders before/on 1/31 will get a free 2 year warranty and a replacement back shell that includes the improved r2 trigger. Any orders after 1/31 seemed to be fixed.
Also I was able to run the same GC and PS2 games at 1x it maintained 60 fps. Idk why he downscaled.
You forgot to talk about the defects everyone's having.
Bros mad his ROM player doesn’t work right 💀

This 💯
Hype channel like ETA only talks positive and make up if the product don't have one
so now you're just putting videos out without actually experimenting with the devices settings to get the best performance? I've been subscribed to your for years, This used to be a good channel....
F-zero is auto set to 2 cores rather than 4 on dolphin, it runs pretty well when you change it
Nice to see comparative data between related hardware.
Constrictive feedback: please turn down the handheld or use ducking because at some points in the video it's hard to hear you over the game.
Thanks
Launchbox scraping is second to none.
I use it as a mini tablet too. Great little entertainment device.
That Red looks rad!
Im guessing its because ETAPrime left it on Smart/Auto. RGC manually put the system into Highperformance mode.
ETA is wrong on this one. I have one and while it's not perfect there is 0 reason GC to be under 1X and honestly everything I tried works at 2X without much tweaking. I guess at least he under sells it but he is still miles off the mark
The rp3+ could run a ton of gamecube at 1x res, idk what he's doing
There are several possible reasons.
1) he left the device in the wrong power configuration and forgot to try high performance mode
2) he used the wrong versions / forks of emulators that are not optimised for this hardware
3) he didn't actually test this for a month since he's so busy with the other products, life, family, etc. so he's missing information that everyone else already picked up on weeks ago.
Option 3 would explain how his triggers aren't broken yet.
How about ergonomics? Igot a Pocket 3 when first released but find it hard to do dual analogs mainly due to low left stick placement. Does this feel better? Looks pretty similar
They offer a $15 grip that dramatically helps with that situation.
For the left analog I find the grip to be key. Otherwise, I'd cramp up quickly given the size. WIth the grip, it works great for me.
@@bwp6v Very true, I don't have a retroid but I have a nitro deck which a lot of people say sucks because of the left stick, but after using it for a bit and getting cramps I just had to adjust how I was holding it and it's fine now.
I agree. I wish they had it xbox/switch style with the Left stick on the top instead. This works better for 3d games.
It's he only thing that holds me from getting this.
I'm waiting for a revision with left stick on top.
Needing a grip beats the purpose of pocketability.
really happy to watch your videos all this time even though never buy any of your recommendation cause can't afford it.
When every video is recommended.. I don't blame you.
The non pro hasn't shipped yet. They sold/shipped just the pro first.
I'm having no issues with the r2 triggers. But I'm worried with heavy use would they break? I've been playing classic games more to avoid this issue.
How do you get the games onto the device?
I may have a theory for your weird results on GC/PS2 as im getting better GC/PS2 performance on my Retroid 2S.
Could it be related to Retroids FPS overlay you are using in the video? From my experience don't rely on it! as it gives inaccurate results (first noticed it with new build of PS1 duckstation emulator) always check FPS with a emulators in-app FPS counter i find. For example the Retroid FPS overlay tells me duckstation is dropping FPS but the in-app counter is locked to 60.
Hope that helps.
The problem with this is 2-4 months from now something will come out and be better for the same price point. That's both a blessing and a curse.
Loll, you're not getting PS3 emulaton for 250 😆 you'll also need a PC. Cheapest is 700
Not really. It seems Retroid learned their mistakes from the 3 and 3+. They announced the weaker base 4 and 4 Pro at the same time, then sold only the 4 Pro first.
@@fillerbunnyninjashark271 I would agree for the immediate future. But you never know beyond that.
The only version of dolphins that lets you downscale is “dolphins for handheld” which is why you’re getting bad performance. I just use the one from the play store and haven’t had any issues with any GameCube games
Bro make a comparison Video retroid pocket 4 pro vs rg556
A month later and I still don’t have the one I ordered 20 minutes after preorders started.
Have you had any problems with screen ghosting?
Is this device able to play games right out of the box?
Hello, could you please do a guide on setting up PS2 emulation on this and the RP3+
You should adjust your volume levels. I have a hard time hearing you over the footage with gameplay
mine has a green and red line going across the screen. and they cant answer my email until lunar new years is over. sadge
Those benchmarks are almost identical to my S21 Ultra. Wow
Just received my Pro in the mail is it safe to use a fast charger or do I need to pick up another charger
Dose this game console run PS1 PS2 PS3 XBOX 360 ZX Spectrum N64 Games? Does it also have Google play store?
Definitely needs a grip
He is great! I love his reviews, one of my four favorites. He definitely knows what he is talking about. Every handheld that is made should be looked at as a good thing! If you love retro games, you will love most of these handhelds!! Thank you, Prime!!
An AI definitely wrote this.
Game sound makes it very hard to understand what you are saying
It's not bad but as things change so quickly, I don't actually think that this will be quite as popular as at first imagined. It seems that it just doesn't quite run what many may have hoped for from day one.
He is just bad at testing. He's using out dated emulators and not adjusting the drop down. This is embarrassingly bad review. Not shilling but it can do 90% of GameCube at 2x without issue. This is 100% user error on his part
thanks ETA Prime showing Diablo immortal.
Is this a review or a paid advert?
Does it support switch or ps vita? Thx
Gets a commodore 64 in the mail plus payment, BEST PC YOU CAN BUY RIGHT NOW
looks like speedy reviews maybe the fame is changing him
Ofcourse shills still refuse to call out retroid for their shitty QC on this device
Hows this thing with 3DS emulation?
good job to me, just get a used phone with the correct soc
How does this compare to the ayaneo pocket S? Price difference?
the RP4 Pro is a lot more powerful than the pocketS
I cannot buy it for a reasonable price lol. Customs, VAT plus shipping costs make it super expensive.
It looks cool and all.
but if you can afford to pay money for an android that can't make calls.
might as well pay extra and get the better value device Odin pro 2
So which pokemon games from the ds-3ds can it run?
Did he mention broken triggers?
Downscale resolution???? LMAAAOO who is this guy?? Over a million susbcribers? H O W
Retro Pocket 4 pro vs Ambernic RG556?
Odin 2 Pro!
@@EliasPfaifferthat's finy. I can't seem to find it for $199 ;)
@@JosephFrietzeThe RG556! The RP4 Pro only benefit is that it has 20% more power doesn't even matter because if you play the complete Ps2 games it can a run it a little bit better for a smaller screen, bad ergonomic, bad batterylife and eventuelly a lot of problems like the R2 Trigger, Screen or sd cardslot issues!
@@RGB-Gamer yeah, that's what I was thinking too. Thanks.
Be truthful and talk about the buttons. Defects that everybody's having stop being too positive.
Retroid addressed this within a week of it being reported and said all orders before/on 1/31 will get a free 2 year warranty and a replacement back shell that includes the improved r2 trigger. Any orders after 1/31 seemed to be fixed.
Buttons are perfect
I still don't understand why people run games at a super high resolution... A resolution that is higher than the display can render.
Is not better to just save a little and buy ayn?
100 $ more isn't a little. The RP4 just costs only 200 $. You have to pay basically half the price of the RP4 on top to get the Odin2 base model.
Can you play rom hacks like Pokémon Insurance and Pokémon zenoverse
I had The Odin Lite same soc as The RP4 and MTK soc are not better than SD socs, is cheaper yes but it's not gonna give you The same performance, besides MTK it's better with vulkan but it causes a lot of graphical glitches in many emulators, so my final word Buy RP4+ only if You wanna play basic games Gamecube and below even with ps2 it Will have glitches if You wanna play Gamecube PS2 and Wii go for Odin 2
why would you ever choose a device like this over that $15 controller ETA PRIME reviewed last week
Honestly, ive tried the external controller route, and this thing is actually more pocketable
@@fu102 but why carry two devices? Is it more pocketable if you also have your phone in your pocket? Chances are your phone is more powerful and has better screen anyways
Disclaimer (fictional): just yesterday we have seen "THE BEST 209 $ HANDHELD YOU CAN BUY RIGHT NOW" and the day before "THE BEST 219 $ HANDHELD YOU CAN BUY RIGHT NOW".
Naturally, I had to buy all of them... ALL OF THEM.
Just got mine yesterday.
What about dreamcast and sega saturn?
best "insert product name" youtuber 😂
These UA-camrs be saying anything to sell you dummy stuff, this device has green screen tint issues and failing back buttons, loud fan noise… The Best 199$ Handheld You Can Buy Right Now! 😒
Hey guys I'm looking for a similar form factor like this that can emulate switch. I've had a steam deck with a portable battery and I can't get more than an hour and a half. I also have a Lenovo legion go and battery life is even shorter. Any suggestions on a pocket handheld?
I have a question, can this device run fortnite mobile?
I need this In calm shell.
Any new odroid handhelds ?
How does carx street run on this my s21 struggles with it my and the firmware on the odin is outdated so its not supported 😢
Oh i Buy the retroid Pocket 3+ is it so Bad?
As long as you can emulate or play games that you want then is ok
will yuzu work on this device?
Yes not all games work that well though because of how new switch emulation is
Also try Skyline, as it somehow runs some games faster than Yuzu
Con que emulador de dolphin puedes bajar a 0.6 red????
The L2 trigger stopped working on mines chip burnt out sending mines back and getting ODIN 2 ASAP I give the retroid pocket 2 thumbs down 👎🏾
AYN and Retroid are owned by the same company and they share some hardware and software bits between the Odins and the Pockets. I'm not saying that you shouldn't buy the Odin 2; just do your due diligence before buying one.
@@mattdavis9601 🥱🥱🥱
This on paper should outperform my old a52s and yet ps2 games run better on 1x then this Pocket can and like that kingdom hearts at 2x no issues, god of war goes 1x.
Maybe no setup done or something is wrong with this device or drivers or something, but this should handle emulation better then my now old phone, in this regard comaparing it to gen1 is like comparing a planetary system to a galaxy, i mean both are magnificent but one is just something else entirely, i dont know something feels off.
It does handle GC/PS2 at 2x without breaking much of a sweat. I think he didn't change performance settings. FZero and Colin McCrae run 2x no issues
screen is way too small IMO so the price doesnt help
It's ok if your a month late reviewing we forgive you rest assured💯💯
No one mentions the horrible screen ghosting, ruins everything, even the 2S has much less screen ghosting.
