Apologies for the oversight regarding the megabits vs. megabytes error in the video editing process. Despite the significant time invested in this project over the past week, it appears overlooked that detail. Don't worry, I'm fully aware of the distinction between megabits and megabytes. Thanks for your understanding. Everyone makes mistakes here and there.
I appreciate you actually acknowledging that this device wont play everything smooth and flawlessly. A lot of other reviewers dont necessarily say that
@@ScrubsWasTakenTbh it does, it's very capable and comparable to an SD 865 although when it comes to Emulation it's a no brainer snapdragon is infinitely better
Although you kind of have to do some Hacks with the Emulator such as Lowering the Underclocking to 50% or the Internal Resolution to maintain a Decent Framerate. This is an ongoing Issue with the 2S, 3+, & Flip. However the 4 Pro shouldn’t be that much of a Problem.

This is the best RP4 Pro review I have seen ❤ the speakers comparison is absolutely what was I looking for. I have a RP2S, and I love it, but I would like a better PS2 emulation, a higher quality video output, and a 16:9 screen for streaming... At the moment I don't have the money to do this upgrade, but maybe sometime in the future I would seriously consider the RP4 Pro (not sure if in crystal or watermelon color).
@@KeiRetroGaming Also here for the thumbs up! Ordered the Crystal Version, but postage is slow to me. Couple things to note, the device isn't finished yet. They don't have all the drivers sorted out yet. So there will be TWO big updates coming in the next month. One is for the display driver, the other is for the chipset. They're using old/outdated versions, simply because that's what was working. Their team is already on it, to make the necessary changes. The display is "done" but I think there will probably be another update for it. The chipset is more questionable. Right now it's running a bit slower than usual, whilst using a lot more power. This will improve, but not sure by how much. That's why the fan curve is aggressive. Their team also said they will likely tweak the fan adjustment in a future update. On top of that, there is probably some Android-side optimisations they'll work on. I have heard the Base RP4 is in a better state than the RP4+ (aka Pro), but can't know until devices get shipped out. I think they knew and they should've focused more on the Pro unit, but they'll get there soon. That's the good thing about Go-Retroid, because they only have a few devices, they can and do make updates for their devices. Anbernic cannot compete, they sell at a higher cost, but due to the sheer quantity of variants, they ditch support shortly after to work on the next project. And while I don't like the AYN Odin, the AYN Odin2 looks to be on a fantastic trajectory in terms of long-term support. But AYN is not a good company when you look at their x86 devices, it leaves you wanting.
@@KeiRetroGaming By the way, in the video you keep referring to the RP4 Pro as the "RP4" which can be confusing. I know I also make the problem of conflating the RP4 Pro and calling it the RP4+, but that's just semantics. Despite all their similarities, they are distinct products. There could be differences in their microphones, speakers, screens, etc etc. Even if not a hardware one, the different software can make the difference. Overall, I think both units are a little late and overpriced for what you get. The AYN Odin2 is the reason. But if we use the excuse of inflation, it's not too bad, about on-par as their previous value offerings. I still think they should've done better. Firstly released more polished and earlier (October 2023). Make the RP4 cheaper like USD $120, stick to MTK D900 for low-PS2 gaming. Keep the RP4+ USD $200 price, change to QSD 778 for high-Wii gaming. Then in 14 months time (Dec 2024), upgrade them. RP5 goes to USD $150 and MTK D7200, 6GB, 128GB eMMC, for medium-GameCube gaming. Whilst the RP5+ sticks to USD $200 and the same specs, but upgrades to QC 7g2+ chipset for high-Vita gaming. Those options will hold you off for a decent while. Maybe they could focus on those two devices for a while, maybe release alternative versions like the "Mini" and "Flip" in the coming year and support those well. And have the RP6 have a Gap-Year and come with something substantial in 2026. I'd suggest a USD $200 for a RP6 handheld, and a RP6+ for a USD $400 price but being very comfortable in the pocket and coming with the latest flagship (QC 8g5) processor. Otherwise doing a limited release of a USD $600 device (RP6) aka "Retroid Phone 6", where you get a smartphone that has removable gamepad like the Razer JungleCat, and lots of goodies (see Samsung xCover 6 Pro).
Thanks for the titan quest suggestion. Decent port and had some left over google vouchers I needed to use up given as a gift a few years back so practically free :)

Great review man, thanks for letting cpu float overlay turned on. I'm very disappointed with it's consumption, that 1.5x dmc3 battery life is worse than the 3+, that's unexpected, and the 3000ma consumption is crazy. I will wait on the rp4 review, i hope it's battery life is better.
Yes!!!! cpufloat is awesome! With the battery drain etc, it's great. I am also curious about the RP4, given it has a smaller screen, upscaling is less of an issue, even suits the 720p hdmi out.
This has been tested on another RP4 Pro and I've been in contact with Retroid about this issue. Sounds like my battery isn't calibrated properly but you can expect around +50% better battery life on PS2 with a different unit. On my friends RP4 Pro it came out to 3 hours and 40 minutes for the DMC test I did using the same settings.
Insane to me that with analog triggers and near perfect GameCube emulation they have NONE of the GameCube shell colors, not even indigo from the previous models.

I've been keeping my eye on this one, and really think it'll be my choice for a first dive into the retro handheld market. I've found that switch dock and definitely plan on getting that as well. I do have reservations as I'm a game and system collector, so when I can I like playing on original hardware, BUT, the convenience of an all in one solution to reducing wear and tear off my consoles is a definite upside. That and there's games I'd love to play that are getting way too expensive.
I think this is a great first device into this hobby and way better than the one I started with (Anbernic RG351P). Preserving your original hardware is important I think so if you want to play something regularly, this might be a great option.
Where I live its being sold for like 40 to 50 bucks more and if I order it directly from retroids site than customs would be a huge pain as they charge crazy for items imported especially electronics. I will wait for it to go down a lil bit before I buy but it sure looks like a fun handheld.
All these are the same design and parts as retail models. The tint has already been fixed with an OTA update. After the update I can't tell the difference between the 3 plus and the RP4 Pro panel. They're very close and both extremely accurate in color calibration.
I love my Retroid 4pro. I got the grips they are a game changer. I completly love how I can hook it up to my TV / monitor, then use Bluetooth and wired controllers with it. It can be used for a console or a handheld, how badass is that?
if this is the same size and using the same case as the RP3 I wouldn't recommend getting it (the case). It presses down on the buttons and constantly turns it on and off if you aren't careful. I had to ditch it in favour of just a slightly oversized Switch Lite zip case. It actually ended up being better for keeping cables and emergency earbuds together anyway.
With a 0.75X resolution I was getting about 14fps. The funny thing is it wasn't using anywhere close to the full GPU. Bumping up to the high performance mode brought the fps up to 21 at the same 0.75x resolution with 65% GPU load.
Is the standard mode loud? You think you can play most games without turning on the fan? I have tinnitus, so this is quite problematic for me (the noise). Why about the fan wind, can you feel it in your fingers? I can get a RP4 pro quite easily and fast since i live in China, but its been days trying to decide if i buy the 3+ or 4 because of the fan. Thank you
Good job with the video, hadn’t heard of you before, but I was looking at the RP4 Pro videos as I’ve ordered one and wanted to see people’s opinions. Any more observations since this video release?
The fan seems to be what was causing my battery drain but they've already sent me a replacement which just arrived today. Quite happy with the unit otherwise still. Feels like an Odin 2 mini in a way.
I like how in debt your review is. How do you go about becoming a reviewer for retroid? Would love to start reviewing these handhelds myself. I plan on purchasing the 4 pro soon.
Any charger should work fine. I wouldn't recommend using a Samsung charger though as those caused a few issues with the previous model. The hardware is much more modern this time around though so it should be fine either way.
By far the best review so far for this device... Thank You. I played it safe and went with ordering the 16Bit colour variant along with an extra button set and case (and wish now I'd ordered the black sticks and grip for it while I was at it to save shipping lol)... I held off ordering the Watermelon because in the images on their site made it appear to be too 'bright for my liking, but after seeing your review I really wish I'd gone with that colour... Oh well, here's hoping they'll release the case shells separately as 'accessories' some time soon ;) Thank you again for a great video ... Will you be doing a 'How to best setup your new RP4Pro ' video for all us newbies to the scene? ;)
Thanks! I'm gonna have to wait for my device to come back from Retroid as I sent it in today due to the battery issues. I'll try to get some other helpful videos up when the replacement arrives.
Thanks for your great review. I got the skull & co jumpgate, but cannot get the dock to work with my monitor even with the usb-C power... can anyone help? thanks.
For what it offers, it's really good. I just need money. The card seems to be the least of the problems (as long as it's original). And I really wanted the crystal version.
Really good actually. I left it on by accident overnight and it only drained maybe 3-5% at most I think. Pretty early to tell but it seems very decent so far. Much better than the standby time on the 3 plus!
I would get one but just got an Odin 2 max. The benchmarks on Odin 2 just crush this device. I need switch emulation and right now SD8 gen2 is the best for android.
Yeah, you need to be turning your fan profile over to something more active if the CPU is at 95 degrees. That would damage the battery pretty quickly if you were running at that temp all the time.
This is the first ever Android console or phone I finally see surpassing the performance of my phone which since 2021 has stood unbeatable in the $200-$250 price range
Do this come fitted with the Retroid Pocket 4/4Pro Hall Joysticks or do you have to add those and install them yourself? And if you add them do they install the sticks?
Looks nice but I went with the Ayn Odin 2. I like the bigger higher resolution full 1080P screen. This seems Ok though it you want something a little smaller.
If i already have an ally ROG for playing PC games should i still get one of these for retro games? I want a device to bring around easily and not feeling afraid of breaking it while playing outside.
Pre ordered this the day of release, looks good! Your PS2 battery results are quite worrying though, fingers crossed this is related to your specific unit 🤞🏼
@@KeiRetroGaming Great to hear! I've been waiting a while to move from a MM+ to a bigger handheld, holding off for GC and PS2 to be in a good state at this price point, it's nice to see it delivering for the most part
Tbh, Shadow of the Colossus was one of PS2 last greats and really posted the machine like few others, it probably ran originally in 21fps or even less - it used motion blur heavily to mask this a bit. unless your intention is playing this in public spaces, I'm finding my Meta Quest perfect for emulation up to PS2, PSP and 3DS - instead of mini screen, you play comfortably on screen of any size, in a convenient, also portable profile...
I was really excited for this but now one of 2 things needs to happen for me to get this, either yuzu needs to optimize much better for dimensity chips, or they would need to come out with a version with a 4:3 screen. Switch is really the only thing that i would want a 16:9 for, but the performance just isnt there, and i learned from my rp3+ that i absolutely hate playing gamecube and ps2 with black bars or stretched
My RP4pro came and in 24 hours the R2 Trigger broke down just like many others. Now no response on when the replacements will arrive - even before Chinese new year. Very disappointing.
I'm sure they'll help when they reopen after the holidays. Someone in the community has confirmed these work as replacements if you want something directly off Amazon in the meantime: a.co/d/0HcYYKw
@@KeiRetroGaming thans Kei, issue is I paid extra for DHL now i will wait at least 6 weeks. In the end they could not help in time. Will try your recommendation.
best review i have seen yet. My question is that I preordered this in dec(23) w dhl. How long does it take retroid to ship - for DHL to receive? Shipping date is 15th Jan + on the goretroid? Another question is vulkan. I have seen some emulation that worked with Bulkan for aether & dolpin. Was the issue you had for specific games or accross the board for these emulators?
Only Retroid knows how long till your order ships but I imagine a good portion of orders should be shipped out within 2-3 weeks max. OpenGL seemed to work better across the board for me in nearly all my tests on Gamecube and PS2.
36:30 For the low battery life for PS2, did you try playing the games in Vulkan? I find OpenGL tends to eat into my battery with my blue rp3+ more often than not depending on the game. Great review! The red looks awesome and the panel is fixed. Great price, great form factor, great battery life if you don't push it. Dreamcast at 960x is still pretty good on mine. Pocketable! Everything I wanted and more I got with this. Bravo GoRetroid! I'm gonna go for the 16bit EU color scheme. It's... classic. ^_^
Thanks, I'm glad you liked the review! This one was a ton of work. Vulkan performance wasn't great unfortunately in Aether so I had to run it in openGL. I was kinda wondering if it was eating the battery faster than Vulkan but that's good to get confirmation.
@@KeiRetroGaming Yeah! Rally enjoyed it, amazing how you can save a lot of battery life just by disabling the fan, forgot to mention that. :) Thanks again!
If you're after GameCube, PS2 and native android gaming, absolutely. If you're still mainly doing retro emulation then the 3+ is fine. Obviously the 3+ will still handle some GameCube and PS2 but there's a huge jump in power moving to the D1100 so upscaling and better compatibility with those systems is a nice benefit as a result.
Any Gamecube (unless it has emulation issues on any system) should be very playable from my testing so far. I haven't encountered a single Gamecube game that didn't run well. No idea about private servers though sorry.
@@KeiRetroGaming thanks for answering my question! I plan on playing it offline anyways, and I’m looking up if it’s even possible to get my GameCube saves on to the Retroid using Wii emulation. Crazy cool world we live in now with handhelds!
We're limited by the screen of course but I wanted to see how capable the device was with upscaling at the higher end. I upscaled Dreamcast to 8k just for the hell of it on my Odin 2 review. Completely unnecessary but fun anyways.
Depends on what you need. As someone who used Steam Deck for 2 months I would go for something like RP, Steam Deck is just too big to carry it with you and at home I have a much better PC. Retroid is just nice to put in your bag and play whenever you have time throughout the day. But then if you travel Steam Deck is obviously much more powerful and basically like having a PC which is more versatile
For $200 that "That Other High End System" should work flawless, if not you can buy them used for less than $200, so this would be an actual downgrade. Keep in mind their will be a massive price drop this year for "That Other High End System" because the V2 version will be out. Plus it comes with a larger screen.
Dos the Switch play ps2, psp, dreamcast, etc? You're right that if you're only interested in Switch games this doesn't make sense. But if you're interested in playing almost every other console then you want this.
Just so you know. For those internet download upload measurement it's counted in Megabits not Megabytes. You take the megabits and divide it by 8 to get get megabytes.
"best for under $200" I hate that because $199 + ship is already well over $200 and then you'll probably want a grip and/or dock plus a memory card etc. So it will end up being $250+. Anyway, I still wish the screen wasn't so small. However with the skull & co dock it becomes interesting to me.
I love the watermelon color, so you know my recommendation. Watermelon is dark enough to hide the manufacturing/reinforcement lines underneath while still showing the electronics.
@@KeiRetroGaming thanks for this. Yeah, I'm leaning that way. Do you think the clear one would be easy to dye? Thinking of making a clear green one starting with the crystal unit.

17:55 internet speed have about 140mb download…yet when I download always around 8mb ps any idea why?
Did it already come with Gamma OS? or Do I need to install it myself?
This comes with stock Android.
It should be called Odin Mini, lol. Great video!
Great Review Mr.Kei!
Thanks! This is easily one of my favorite Android handhelds now.
Awesome! Can't wait for mine to arrive! What app do you use that shows your Internet up and down speeds in the top notification bar to the right?
That's built into Android. I think it showed it off in the tweaks section maybe.
Why are you running anything higher than 720p?
Great review. This made me order one. Quick question: What charger can you use for this device?
Any charger should work fine. I wouldn't recommend using a Samsung charger though as those caused a few issues with the previous model. The hardware is much more modern this time around though so it should be fine either way.
5 hrs on Gamecube??? Wow, that's sweet!
Oh well, here's hoping they'll release the case shells separately as 'accessories' some time soon ;)
Thank you again for a great video ...
Yes! The US 16 bit looks amazing! Preordered it weeks ago!
Looking forward to watching
Thanks for your great review. I got the skull & co jumpgate, but cannot get the dock to work with my monitor even with the usb-C power... can anyone help? thanks.
Great video Kei
Liked and subbed! How does Shadow of the Colossus run at 0.5x and 1x resolutions? Thanks!
For what it offers, it's really good. I just need money. The card seems to be the least of the problems (as long as it's original). And I really wanted the crystal version.
So hyped for mine. I gotta order 1TB card asap.
how is the energy consumption in standby mode? the RP3+ eats really much energy during standby
Really good actually. I left it on by accident overnight and it only drained maybe 3-5% at most I think. Pretty early to tell but it seems very decent so far. Much better than the standby time on the 3 plus!
Which grips would work? The same grips for the switch lite? Or other switch ? 😊
The only grip that works is the one from Retroid directly.
sorry i meant analog stick grips@@KeiRetroGaming
I would get one but just got an Odin 2 max. The benchmarks on Odin 2 just crush this device. I need switch emulation and right now SD8 gen2 is the best for android.
Yeah, you need to be turning your fan profile over to something more active if the CPU is at 95 degrees. That would damage the battery pretty quickly if you were running at that temp all the time.
Are the face buttons lower profile than on the RP3+? They look shorter in photos but I haven’t heard anyone say it
This is the first ever Android console or phone I finally see surpassing the performance of my phone which since 2021 has stood unbeatable in the $200-$250 price range
What phone do you have
Great review 👍🏾If I purchase this nice unit how and where can I get the name/snes or other games for it? Thanks
I'm sorry but I can't tell you where to source your games. Glad you liked the review though! I think you'll be pretty happy with the device.
YAY THE RETROID POCKET 3S IS FINALLY HERE HA CAN'T WAIT TO SEE IT FIRST HAND!
Great video!
Do this come fitted with the Retroid Pocket 4/4Pro Hall Joysticks or do you have to add those and install them yourself? And if you add them do they install the sticks?
It comes pre-installed with hall joysticks, no need to buy extras or install them yourself.
Sounds like an excellent combo!
Pre ordered this the day of release, looks good! Your PS2 battery results are quite worrying though, fingers crossed this is related to your specific unit 🤞🏼
It's my unit specifically. Expect roughly +50% PS2 battery life on any other device.
What OS and launcher are you using????
Android with Daijisho
Someone in the community has confirmed these work as replacements if you want something directly off Amazon in the meantime:

@@KeiRetroGaming thans Kei, issue is I paid extra for DHL now i will wait at least 6 weeks. In the end they could not help in time. Will try your recommendation.
What a great late night surprise! Let's watch! ^_^
Happy New Years btw!
Likewise, thanks! Enjoy the video.
Does it come with pre-installed games?
Whether this can handle all psp,ps2 and psvita games smoothly?
When will they ship? Ordered weeks agobamd no updates
According to the website the "RP4 Pro starts shipping on 1/15/2024 and the RP4 starts shipping on 1/25/2024".
best review i have seen yet.
I only run vulkan as most suggest, is opengl actually better?
Thnx, very informative 👍
Will it play Steam games? I already have several handhelds for retro gaming.
Here's hoping they make a new RP Flip with the RP4 Pro chip.
how to play in Lies of P on Retroid pocked 4 pro ???
You'll have to stream it from a computer via Moonlight or Steam Link to play it on the 4 Pro.
@@KeiRetroGaming thank you mate
Is it worth upgrading from the 3+ to the 4
If you're after GameCube, PS2 and native android gaming, absolutely. If you're still mainly doing retro emulation then the 3+ is fine. Obviously the 3+ will still handle some GameCube and PS2 but there's a huge jump in power moving to the D1100 so upscaling and better compatibility with those systems is a nice benefit as a result.
Retroid poket 4 pro or loki zero for indie games?
Depends which indie games. The 4 Pro isn't gonna play PC Indies, only Android.
does it come with sd card and games?
Retroid doesn't include games on their devices. Gotta provide your own.
I’m so wanting to buy this if only to play Phantasy Star Online for the GameCube. Is that playable, and can you get online with a private server?
Any Gamecube (unless it has emulation issues on any system) should be very playable from my testing so far. I haven't encountered a single Gamecube game that didn't run well. No idea about private servers though sorry.
@@KeiRetroGaming thanks for answering my question! I plan on playing it offline anyways, and I’m looking up if it’s even possible to get my GameCube saves on to the Retroid using Wii emulation. Crazy cool world we live in now with handhelds!
Are you and Chills who posts creepy videos are the same person? You sound alike. Great video.
Needs larger and closer ABXY buttons.
You claim 1080p and 4k but the screen us 750p only. Please explain
We're limited by the screen of course but I wanted to see how capable the device was with upscaling at the higher end. I upscaled Dreamcast to 8k just for the hell of it on my Odin 2 review. Completely unnecessary but fun anyways.
Is it easy to root this one?
comes with games pre installed?
Nope, you gotta provide your own games. Retroid never includes any on their handhelds.
Rp4 looks a great handheld, would you buy a RP4 or steam deck ?
Depends on what you need. As someone who used Steam Deck for 2 months I would go for something like RP, Steam Deck is just too big to carry it with you and at home I have a much better PC. Retroid is just nice to put in your bag and play whenever you have time throughout the day. But then if you travel Steam Deck is obviously much more powerful and basically like having a PC which is more versatile
What is the country of origin for device medicine?
This beat is fire
Ah the BGM? Same talented artist who did the music behind Retro Game Corps.
I wish this had a 1080p OLED screen 😩
Are you telling me this can play N64,Gamecube,Ps1 AND Ps2? Holy Smokes 🤩
Uh, where u been? There's been lots of devices that could play those already.
@@suhtangwong But all of them on one tho?
Can you play Super Nintendo games on this ??
Yep this'll emulate SNES stuff easily.
and they've raised their prices already
Still shows 199 on the main website for me.
@@KeiRetroGaming hmmm I found 269, maybe I’m on the wrong website.
Official links are in the video description
Why on Earth do they put the right stick on the lower end on the device? Thats so uncomfortable
Me hubiera gustado en color naranja como el N64, pero tuve el rojo
For $200 that "That Other High End System" should work flawless, if not you can buy them used for less than $200, so this would be an actual downgrade. Keep in mind their will be a massive price drop this year for "That Other High End System" because the V2 version will be out. Plus it comes with a larger screen.
just name the system dude
What system are you referring to?
Dos the Switch play ps2, psp, dreamcast, etc? You're right that if you're only interested in Switch games this doesn't make sense. But if you're interested in playing almost every other console then you want this.
Just so you know. For those internet download upload measurement it's counted in Megabits not Megabytes. You take the megabits and divide it by 8 to get get megabytes.
Yes I work for an ISP. Its a common mistake.
Yep I know, I guess I missed that mistake in editing. Sorry.
"best for under $200" I hate that because $199 + ship is already well over $200 and then you'll probably want a grip and/or dock plus a memory card etc. So it will end up being $250+. Anyway, I still wish the screen wasn't so small. However with the skull & co dock it becomes interesting to me.
Can it run netflix Gta Trilogy?
is it touchscreen
Yes
I got the crystal :)
Watermelon or Crystal!?
I honestly can't decide.
I wouldn't attempt it personally since removing the panel always has the chance to break it.
@@KeiRetroGaming yes true. Thanks dude!
