Thank you Taki for this deep dive on the Pocket 4 Pro. If it were any deeper people would confuse it with the Mariana Trench. It's obvious that a ton of work went into making this video. Unfortunately for me, I watched and commented under the First Look video a few days after it was published. I assume most of this video was already recorded by then because not a single one of my amazing game recommendations made the cut. Maybe I just have terrible taste in games? Ha. Anyways, the one I cared about most was/is "WRC: Rally Evolved" for the PS2. It was Sony and Evolution Studios' rally game swansong and by all accounts they went out on top. My current Snapdragon 845 powered LG phone, the best gaming anything I own at the moment, can't run it well at all. If the Pocket 4 Pro could run it full speed at 1X resolution that would help sell this system to me. Does anyone know how well it'll run here? A semi off topic question: My understanding is that all versions of the Pocket 3 and 4 series use third party iPhone 8/SE2/SE3 screens. Would a factory first party Apple screen be a plug-in-play upgrade for the Pockets 3 and 4? I'm asking because it's not that hard to find older mainline iPhones and newer SEs for sale dirt cheap that have good screens, but are otherwise inoperative. Or is this one of those things where even if it works it quite literally won't make a difference?
Hey sir taki, not related in your vid but im super impressed now with Citra mmj, even my phone (a mediatek helio g96) is able to run mh gen and mh3u flawlessly. But a year a go it was impossible.... Kudos to the citra developers. Also the ppsspp emulator which is already great but the devs never stop improving it. That makes my low end android phones that i dont use anymore comes back to life as an emulation machine
Nice. If I hadn't already bought a used 3+ last month for 100usd, I'd consider this. However, my main issue with the Retroid is the screen size so if I was going to get another handheld it'd most likely be the Odin 2. I probably won't because [1] I have a steam deck and [2] a Galaxy fold 5, for which I just got a Gamesir G8.
yeah as a steam deck owner it's really hard to justify getting another handheld when they'll have less power and a smaller screen and or worse battery life. I even got an rog ally and returned it because I like the steam deck more. If I find one cheap enough though it would be fun to mess around with one of these
honestly the fix for the green screen issue is nice to see. while it technically still exists with the start up logo, I don't think its a big deal now.
It's almost 50 to 60 bucks expensive where I live but it looks so tempting. Ps2 on a handheld is a dream. I'll pick it up maybe sometime later this year to see if price goes down a bit.
Really impressive. I'm waiting to have an handled console with 4 to 6 ARM CPU with Windows (Emulation ?) > Mobox style if needed. It will be a blast. That's the future for sure.
Just watch them all. They all have something to add and and have different perspectives to their reviews, and are not always in agreement. Some have a methodology, or do a deep dive, others have something happening to their unit that doesn't happen to others. Personally i like to watch Taki Udon, Retro Game Corps, TechDweeb, The Phawx, and ETA Prime. At least two or three of them, to get a clear picture, other times, all of them, if i am in doubt about a certain piece of hardware.
@00Resev I I watched all of those and more but I like Taki's take on things. His criticism can be hard for fan boys to swallow but that's what reviews are for. It's even more important when it comes to items shipping overseas because returns can be bad for both sellers and buyers when there are mismatch expectations.
If it hasn't already been pointed out to you the cpu boost seems to be a power profile issue. During your Power Consumption Deep Dive section, on the Standard setting the 3 lower cores were boosting to 2.6 and the usual 2.6 core was lower about 2.1. I did ctrl+f to see if anyone else put 2600 or 2.6 in the comments and didn't find any.
This gets so close to my perfect retro handheld, has all the features. Just need that snapdragon for support. Odin 2 would be it except for the d-pad placement on top and the the size is a little big for me. Maybe RP5 will do it for me, come on Retroid, give us that snapdragon.
Instead of falling for all the hype, I waited till the Odin Pro 1 fell to the same price as this (coincidentally it happened at the same time this was released...😉) and bought it. Great, fully proven and plenty powerful enough. The screen is larger, has zero issues ( 😉), and I'm a happy camper. Patience is indeed a virtue with this wacky retro world of ours.
I love it! Open source handhelds made by passionates. I prefer this than this weird plastation portals, nintendo switches and other (not so good) handhelds. This is more psp that ever. And in the near future there will probably be tons of different handhelds with everything that i need for less than 50 bucks. I need it!
Hi taki, nice video but i recomend you use NetherSX2 instead AetherSX2, because Nether is being updated by the community and adding part of the fixes that arrive in PCSX2
My Retroid Pocket Flip has been doing really well as my go to system now, but honestly, after experiencing some issues with my 3DS, I've actually been looking into potential replacements, and the Flip can at least play the games, somewhat. I mainly tried some Kirby titles, and they usually have slow down and stuttering. I feel like every time I look for some new device, it's just so I can retain the games I had growing up, First it was for GBA, the PSP, now 3DS.
I'm glad we can finally play that generation of consoles on handheld, but the fact that we phased out 4:3 screens makes it feel like a wasted effort. It took this long to get ps2 to handheld, and we don't even have the right screen to play it on. Every single game on this thing will either have black bars, or an extra level of compatibility settings we shouldn't have to go through. God I wish they'd just make this in 4:3.
Thanks for the video, very informative. I'm not an expert, but coming from pc gaming I have to ask, are those temps normal with some ps2 games? 100 degrees look scary. I mean, is it ok to play for like two hours with those kind of temps without damaging the cpu or battery?
It's the die temp. The critical temperature for this package is 125C, but the device will shutoff if it reaches 115C. Occasional 90-100c temps on the die should be fine.
I will say, regarding Hollow Knight, I always felt like there was something “off” about how the game felt on the switch. So I also bought it on PC, and it felt way better there! Dunno if it’s just perceived or actual input lag, but I just had a better time on the PC version. :)
IMHO, you did not need to qualify your comments on the green screen issue so much. There was clearly a problem with the display and its calibration both, and you were right to call it out. Even if the company has been made aware of the issue, downplaying it and promoting a fix before it’s been made available to test is absolutely the wrong move, even if there’s a high degree of trust between a reviewer and the manufacturer. It was legitimately surprising to see, and I am glad you didn’t go this route.
I mainly wanted to have something to point back to in the future to explain how I approach these kinds of things and where I think my obligations are to the viewer and to the company. I've never described this process before, so I think it will be valuable to have going forward. I agree with your other points.
So many nice handhelds this year. But as a super early bird odin lite I am hesitant to buy anything in this performance bracket for now as im waiting for the snapdragon G3X chips to be available.
Fellow Odin Lite owner here and honestly apart from the Odin2, nothing is tempting me, and given the price of that, between 300 and a SteamDeck at 400 But then it's not as portable. I think we'll be waiting quite a while to see another reaaally interesting buy at 199, the Odin Lite really was fantastic value, especially when you have the 6gb of RAM instead of 4 !
Wow I didn't realize the RP4 Pro and Odin Lite are basically the same thing... Really makes me just want to get an Odin 2, I had the Odin 1 Pro and it just didn't feel like enough.

Yes, screen is too small.
yeah as a steam deck owner it's really hard to justify getting another handheld when they'll have less power and a smaller screen and or worse battery life. I even got an rog ally and returned it because I like the steam deck more. If I find one cheap enough though it would be fun to mess around with one of these
honestly the fix for the green screen issue is nice to see. while it technically still exists with the start up logo, I don't think its a big deal now.
I'm pretty sure this is going to be my main pocket device.
That is why Taki is one the best, Thorough his middle name is 🤘
It's almost 50 to 60 bucks expensive where I live but it looks so tempting. Ps2 on a handheld is a dream. I'll pick it up maybe sometime later this year to see if price goes down a bit.
Twilight Princess needs the hyrule field speed hack enabled to run properly. Should run fine on this machine
Damn. What a beast. Thanks mate! Cheers!
It's so damn close to perfection, if ONLY the left stick was on top it would be perfect for me. Here's hoping for a revision.
Absolutely, yeah. It's the way it should have been, since this is mainly for GC, Wii and PS2.
Nice detective work with the green screen issue!
Really impressive.
I'm waiting to have an handled console with 4 to 6 ARM CPU with Windows (Emulation ?) > Mobox style if needed. It will be a blast. That's the future for sure.
Excellent game testing!
This was the video I needed.
I pre-ordered one of these a while ago, I cannot wait!
did you ever get it bro how long does it take and what website did you buy it off of
@@CristienTrejo I got it strait from the retroid website, it took about 3 weeks though I imagine it will be faster now that it’s been released.
really good video, super super helpful.
This is what I call a review i know people prefer retro game corp but taki comes thru for the advance users with his knowledge
Should never rely on review of just one person. Should be watching them all for better overall judgement.
IMO Taki and Phawx are the better technical spec deep divers, RGC is the better "crack a cold one open and enjoy the chill vibe" type of content.
@00Resev I I watched all of those and more but I like Taki's take on things. His criticism can be hard for fan boys to swallow but that's what reviews are for. It's even more important when it comes to items shipping overseas because returns can be bad for both sellers and buyers when there are mismatch expectations.
Thank for playing metroid prime 3 ❤ and many others games never seen
If it hasn't already been pointed out to you the cpu boost seems to be a power profile issue. During your Power Consumption Deep Dive section, on the Standard setting the 3 lower cores were boosting to 2.6 and the usual 2.6 core was lower about 2.1. I did ctrl+f to see if anyone else put 2600 or 2.6 in the comments and didn't find any.
How does docking work? Can we use usb for controllers/other stuff while charging and using video out all at once?
This gets so close to my perfect retro handheld, has all the features. Just need that snapdragon for support. Odin 2 would be it except for the d-pad placement on top and the the size is a little big for me.
Maybe RP5 will do it for me, come on Retroid, give us that snapdragon.
Great analysis!
Thanks!
The size of this device is awesome. I love a small pocketable device
In many PS2 games the gpu clocks between 70 and 100 degrees.am i wrong or Is a bit too High?
I love it! Open source handhelds made by passionates. I prefer this than this weird plastation portals, nintendo switches and other (not so good) handhelds. This is more psp that ever. And in the near future there will probably be tons of different handhelds with everything that i need for less than 50 bucks. I need it!
Please always put Gran Turismo 2 and 4 into the mix!🙂
Great video
And with 6 face buttons for similar reasons. At least they had the brains (or really, random luck) to put the D-pad and buttons at the top this time.
@@TakiUdon I understand, thanks for answering!
I will say, regarding Hollow Knight, I always felt like there was something “off” about how the game felt on the switch. So I also bought it on PC, and it felt way better there! Dunno if it’s just perceived or actual input lag, but I just had a better time on the PC version. :)
Wonderful video. As usual I come to the conclusion that I already have a Steam Deck and don't need this.
This is good enough for me for $200 range as I'm PSP, P1/P2 fan.
Sega Saturn handheld, including Bug!, oh yeah, I gotta get this.
The comments are psyched!!! PS2 performance… also pretty big improvement…
An "upgrade and mods" video for the Retroid Pocket 4 would be very welcome!
This was perfect! is there a max storage that this device can take? i would like to purchase one and have a 1tb storage card for all my games.
Awesome video
Thanks!
Was all the games tested at high performance+ max brightness?
What would be the ps1 consumption at standard with fan off?
Fellow Odin Lite owner here and honestly apart from the Odin2, nothing is tempting me, and given the price of that, between 300 and a SteamDeck at 400
But then it's not as portable. I think we'll be waiting quite a while to see another reaaally interesting buy at 199, the Odin Lite really was fantastic value, especially when you have the 6gb of RAM instead of 4 !
@@Allyouknow5820 I don't expect to get another one at the same price point.
But perf to cost ratio maybe.
Wow I didn't realize the RP4 Pro and Odin Lite are basically the same thing... Really makes me just want to get an Odin 2, I had the Odin 1 Pro and it just didn't feel like enough.
