  • Hero Quest Painting Guide Ep.12 Gargoyle
This week we get a double dose of not just videos but gargoyles! In this painting tutorial we show you how you can paint the Hero Quest gargoyle in two different ways. Being made entirely from stone makes painting the gargoyle a simple task and a great pick to start your painting journey. Which one is your favorite?

The OG Hero Quest was my introduction to the miniature hobby and the Gargoyle was the first mini I ever painted. When I finally get round to painting these minis, this is the one I look forward to most.

It was a fun mini to experiment with for stone for sure. One thing I do miss about the OG gargoyle though is how colourful it was, and how it was more like a living creature in the artwork haha it was a fun guy.

The iconic figure. I like the two alternate takes on it!

Wow! You are seriously making me want to repaint everything! It's nice to see how others are painting the mythic stuff. After these 2 gargoyles I can't wait to see how you paint the dragon.

Wouldn't have thought of a sand coloured gargoyle, but I like it. Sort of an Egyptian take 🤔

A bit of trivia: in the original heroquest box set, the gargoyles were painted red. I'm almost certain the gargoyles were meant to be demons, but they were changed because of the Satanic Panic.
In any case, I plan on painting my gargoyles as demons, maybe with lava-cracked skin or something.

RIGHT?!? I've painted one up in the classic look/art before for a friend (maybe I should post it to my Instagram 🤔) I too thought about doing mine in the classic look, but the stone detail on the sculpt turned me otherwise. Good luck with the lava look though, that can be real cool!

I just painted my gargoyle almost like yours. I watched a lot of videos, a lot of them painted it black.
But your grey is a lot closer to the stone grey than any other gargoyles.
I also painted the wings elbow and arms in karzak stone to highlight how big the wings are.

      That's a great idea!
Yeah I found the same when doing research; a lot of very dark gargoyles. Happy mine stuck out to you :)
