- How to Prime miniatures so you can get through that huge pile of shame is one of the things that slows us down. But what if there was a whole host of ways to prime so you can actually get things done quickly.
You don't always have to prime every miniature in black. In fact, I'd actively urge you not to. Try priming in multiple colours, try slapchop, try multi colour rattlecan spraying.
Stop thinking of priming as a first sticky layer of paint and think of it as you first colour layer instead!

I came for the video on primer and stayed for what proved to be ONE OF THE BEST TUTORIALS ON APPLIED COLOR THEORY I HAVE EVER WATCHED. HOLY COW.
Now that’s a compliment. Thank you, thank you. You always worry that UA-cam buries your video in a pile of dirty laundry. But it seems it did it’s job this time! 😜
@@thestateofplay2023 I think we need a part 2 to the inks mixing.........just saying.
What would be in part 2 do you think!
@@thestateofplay2023 Well......a Dropbox location for the chart 😎. Also, I'd love to know how to mix inks from a CMYK I get from an online colour (say FS as I model aircraft). They omit the white because it's assumed you'll be printing on white. Really appreciate the effort you put into your videos!

You’re an absolute legend thank you
I used to paint figures some 25 years ago, and we always primed white. I remember when people first started recommending priming black, and when colored primers started becoming available. I personally only prime black if im painting predominantly metal or black, otherwise I will prime white or my base color.
And you make perfect sense with that approach. 👍🏼
Same, but then I only ever collected 40k, and in my head it always made more sense to me that armour of any kind would be best coated black first. And so my style of painting always sort of adapted the 'proper' method in the direction of having more black areas and generally darker colours.
I think the only things I never primed black were my tzeench and nurgle daemons. The bright pink, blue, and green ones. But I did for khorn ones because red looks better over black.
Edit. Just thought about it, and at one point I did use red primer on khorn bazzerkers.
Sometimes the internet is a fabulous place. I just got my studio cleaned up, my airbrush cleaned out ready to go, and a whole tray of clan rats that need to be primed and painted...what amazing timing.
Your original airbrushing video convinced me to get one in the first place (Ultra 2024 again thanks to you.)
Thank you so much.
Oh man, that Skaventide box just arrived on my doorstep too. Just when I’d already build and primed what I thought - was everything. 🤣
Father of a son who's getting into WH40k here... this is the best video I've seen thus far!
Thank you very much for this; I shelled out the moula for his airbrush last Christmas and was saddened by the fact we only used it for priming. We'll watch this video again together and use your help. Thanks State of Play from across the pond!
You’re very welcome! I hope both you and your son have many years of enjoyment with 40k! Kill team and necromunda next….👍🏼
W Dad
You and I are complete opposites, you paint fast but build slow, meanwhile I’m over here putting together combat patrols in a single day. I absolutely love building models but despise painting.
And you can tidy up all the bins, mould lines and gaps and everything? Wow. I’m impressed. Takes me so much time
The reason for priming black is not to leave it for deliberate shading. It is so that if you miss an area while painting, it's an unobtrusive "shadow" and doesn't look bad like random grey or white does.
Yes and i say the same as I did in the video, “shadows aren’t black”. If the unobtrusive shadow colour was an issue then any dark shade would work better. 👍🏼
Fantastic job mate, I just got an airbrush and this video gave me everything I needed to make a good use of it !
Will dig your other content !
Cheers
Hope some of my other stuff is helpful too.
Aaaand FINALLY a miniature painting video that actually gets into colour theory properly!! Added super-bonus is someone who actually understands that shadows are not black! Loved every second of this video, +1 new subscriber :)
Thank you. You know I never thought saying “shadows aren’t black” would be so controversial. I mean we all have eyes. We can literally look at them. 🤣🤣 but weirdly very few mini painters seem to reference the real world when painting. 🤷🏼♂️
I sat on my airbrush for years and started a few days ago and omg what was I waiting for ... So smooth, so easy love it !
Such an amazing difference isn’t it.
sounds painful, did it leave any marks on ya rear?
Brilliant writing and presentation. Perfection.
Thank you !
Im a blood angels player, and I use contrast/speed paints.
I suggest doing brown for your base, either tan or light brown for your middle layer, and off white with your drybrush. Or you can do brown base, red, bright orange drybrush.
Then do your contrast paint over that.
It makes your reds look better.
Sounds like a good plan!
@@thestateofplay2023 if done right, your shadows will be a maroon color (light red looks when its in shadows) and your highlights will be bright red light the sun is hitting them, and everything in-between will be the proper shade of red for how much light is hitting it.
Tons better than black and varying shades of grey going to white. I did some like that and they looked ok..... But not right.
@codyott1982 is that using the citadel blood angels contrast? How do you do yellow helmets for assault marines?
Just started collecting/painting blood angels myself
@@hollyd8989 yea, for blood angels and blood angels red.
For my helmets, I go over them in grey then Vallejo model color ivory dry brush first.
Thanks!
Thanks mate!!!!
Right on time! And completely agree on Acolyte!!!!!!
Great minds think alike!! 😜👍🏼
I love your mentality on painting! So refreshing and motivating! Thanks for your videos!
Yup. My mentality is get it done using the most efficient way possible. Not always the way everyone else does or even the same way per model, unit or squad! 😜
Binge watching multiple videos a day. Never until now I saved a video to rewatch. You’re a wizard.
Really? Thank you so much. Not even my wife wants to see me that often! 🤣🤣
Thank you for the run down on priming. I'm getting into painting via Battletech and appreciate shared knowledge.
A pleasure!!
Since i started using an airbrush for priming there's no turning back . The amount of paint wasted, and dust created buy a rattle can drove me on to try again and lose my fear to use an airbrush...no turnig back now.
Great video and so many tips.
Yeah I mostly use rattlecans for terrain due to size and speed. But even then, airbrush is still preferable.
superbly done video on primer.
Glad you liked it!
I normally decide on the colour of primer based on the tone of colour I want. Example; bright red, prime white, mid red prime grey, dark red prime black. The colour theory in this video is real brainfood though and I love the thought of primer being "the first layer of colour". Great vid.
Thanks for saying that mate!!
Thanks
I might give that satin varnish idea for speed paints. for awhile I kinda never know why my paint jobs were semi spotty in some areas, followed normal advice of trying not to pool to much, use the proper amount. Nothing worked, so I might give the varnish idea a shot and see how it works.
The satin won’t solve it completely but it’ll certainly help contrast flow better. But being honest, the best way it to thin contrast 50/50 with contrast medium and use two coats over that satin prime. 👍🏼
Came here as I just bought my first Blood Angel set, now I’m hooked on this channel. Excellent content👌
Thank you. Only sorry I can’t do this full time!
This video is excellent on so many levels. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
The quality of your videos is insane. Pivoted from UA-cam on the console to my phone just to make sure you get the love you deserve.
I follow a lot of other channels intermittently and your commentary making some of the colour theory feel relevant and accessible is just quality. You seem like an absolute pro!
Thanks mate. I guess when you enjoy what you do, it helps to show others.
@@thestateofplay2023 I fixed my comment to be clear I was just saying I watch a lot of other channels many will be familiar with, e.g. Goobertown, Dana Howl, Squidmar etc...
They're great in their own ways, but I personally feel like when it comes to explaining "art" concepts you have your own niche which will benefit a lot of folks.
Just another comment for the algo, nothing to see here 👀
Undercoats are perfectly understandable for faster jobs
But priming by brush really teaches you to be more financially responsible when you have to prime all of your stuff by hand
Now you tell me. Where were you when I spent £300 on rattlecans! 🤣🤣
It’s mainly a time thing. With two young kids, a job and a YT channel- I don’t have time or patience to prime by hand anymore.
@@thestateofplay2023 oh that's entirely understandable, it's kinda funny going through them one by one and realizing that I have plenty of models to paint
Don’t we all!!
The cost of rattle cans was the reason I bought an Airbrush (H&S Ultra v2) and a Timbertech-like compressor with tank. Bottles of primer are not expensive, certainly compared to the amount you will get from them vs can, and you can do beautiful gradients. I'm no artist never touched an AB before and I had smooth, perfect gradients within the first 30 minutes of opening my airbrush box. (But I had watched SOP review, and lots and lots of videos mainly Vince Venturella).
I think Vince is our hobby messiah. 🤣
What an absolutely brilliant video!
One of the BEST ever
Thank you for saying so!
Just as a major note, there is still a good use for a black prime. If you're going to be using a lot of true metallic paints, black works really well for that. A lot of heavily armored figures or vehicles being major ones there.
Most of my current major projects are more of just a grey primer there because it works well for different things tied into it, and works decently with a mix of metals and non-metals for aimed results.
Yes, you are absolutely correct. I guess I just want people to be aware that there are options. Don’t always immediately reach for the black. 😜👍🏼
Amazing! You made this all sensible, so many content creators have failed where you succeeded. So glad I found this. Now, I paint on with renewed vigor :)
Brilliant news! So glad it didn’t confuse people!
I am rather new to mini painting but come from an art background. Really boggled my mind why everyone seemed to prime in black. In classical painting you would usually prime with your shadow tones, mostly oranges, browns and purples to have a good contrast and mood already.
Glad to hear that isn't only me being surprised.
Totally get you. I’m from a fine art and design background and the whole black canvas thing always is me scratching my head. Great for some techniques like chalk or pastel but for bright acrylic paint?!
Like so many things I found your video at the perfect time. For the last 6 months I have been building kits, and buying a few different primers, waiting for it to get warmer and me to finish my indoor spray booth.
Not only did I get the most in-depth lesson on priming. Yet there was so much more about beauty of mixing colours right from the very beginning, before even essentially buying any paint.
The timing could of not been more perfect, and presented in such a beautiful and insightful way. Thank you so much
Thanks for the compliment mate, I’m so glad it’ll help you out
Awesome video. Thanks for the different perspective on priming. I am definitely one of those prime black always guys, lol. I have some new ideas now moving forward that might help me slay more gray a lot faster.
I was the same. I used to get hella frustrated with how many coats I’d need over it though. Then when I was finished I was like “where’s the black gone!!”. 🤣🤣
Subscribed. Love the way you explain things and your humor. Definitely kept me engaged and you seem like a cool dude. Keep up the great work.
🤣🤣Thanks! Next time I have a job interview you can be my reference! 😜
Awesome hidden tip, using a Lego plate for a dry brush test! Very cool!
I actually have another video with that exact tip! The one about fidget popper pallettes. 👍🏼
Thanks for this nice collection of various priming techniques ❤
Not a problem! Hope it helps
I don't paint miniatures. In fact, for the last 25-ish years I've avoided painting anything. Then a few days ago a mask i had bought that was irritating me with its lack of depth and contrast inspired me to break it my old brushes and...ahem... go buy some paint. Searched one drybrush technique, and now my feed is flooded with miniatures. This video caught my eye, and now I'm noticing everything I did wrong on that damn mask... I had completely forgotten over the last 2 decades that "Shadows aren't black."
You've earned this sub, my good sir.
Thank you mate. I always appreciate it a bit more when someone who isn’t invested in the miniature topic takes time to say something nice. 👍🏼
Excellent video. Super helpful and highly recommended.
Thank you!!
This video was relatable, and motivational. After using an airbrush, I'd say that batch painting miniatures without an airbrush feels like painting a wall with a toothbrush.
Yea, I once cut my lawn with scissors just to prove to my better half that we needed a decent lawnmower. It worked.
Worth it for the colored shadows alone! AMAZING work, man!!
Thank you!
yay, new video!
wow, this is so impressive to watch... and at the same time so difficult! my brain started racing 5 times while I was watching it all... and this despite the fact that I already knew a good 60 percent... but don’t get me wrong, it’s not about the presentation, it’s about the material! it’s quite complex (if you’re not in the know), but it’s presented just beautifully!
color theory haunts me throughout my life, but I try to avoid it... apparently it has won after all. I need to sit down, figure it out and... hang circles with flowers around my work area
🤣 I tend to look at colour theory’s as A leads to B. So start with one colour and then work out the next. If I want my model to be say, green, I know I can use contrasting purple for shadows as well as dark green or blue because they sit side by side on the wheel.
This video was very well presented, and very informative. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Quick note for Vallejo airbrush primer. It works way better if you think it with the tamiya x20a thinner. Polyurethane reacts with water.
This is where I totally slap my brow and why didn’t I think of that!! It’s not like I don’t have the damn ingredients!! Thank you. Now I can use it up.
@@thestateofplay2023 it was one of those oh crap moments when I accidentally put the thinner in without thinking as I also use xf2 for white. That stuff is magic. I saw it didn't do anything funny instantly and thought I'll try spray that and wow what a difference. No clogs smooth coverage so now I can use my German panzer grey primer again.
I tried it once with some citadel and got a weird thick soup. I’ll give it another go.
@@thestateofplay2023 Vallejo primer it works perfectly. I've not tried other paints though.
I know this comments a bit old, but what ratio? 1:1? I’ll have to give it a shot, even if I haven’t had that many issues with Vallejo
Fantastic! Thank you for the great video. I recently picked up my models again after 20 yrs. I was thinking about a lot of these very ideas. I have still been doing art just not painting the minis. This confirmed and also gave me a lot of ideas.
Brilliant. Glad it was a jumping off point for you! Enjoy your models!!

The various quips were priceless...white lines, lol 🤣
Ah you’ve worked in 90s advertising too. Nuff said!
this guy is a riot !
Very informative with lots of useful educational details!
Top notch video. Lacquer toxicity, speckly rattlecan zenithals, black spray being the wrong choice for most colours are all things people need to hear.
The one thing I'm dying for a good video on is primer durability. Consensus seems to be airbrush primer is far less durable than rattlecan and lacquers so the convenience doesn't feel like a good trade for gaming pieces.
Are the molotow acrylics special in any way that makes them suitable as priming? The airbrush primers tend to be acrylic-polyurethane mixes (which assume makes them more hard-wearing) rather than just pure acrylic.
You don’t need primer. Primer is a myth. I’ve got unprimed models from 38 years ago with no varnish that look the same today as they did when I was 10. Most modern acrylic is tough enough to just stay where you put it.
Molotow are graffiti acrylics. Designed to work on walls outdoors in all weather.
honestly only just starting out the warhammer painting but this video really helped and really considering buying an airbrush
I don’t think i I could do this hobby without an airbrush now. It’s so convenient and much much quicker

The coloured primed slapchop is the way to go
Glad it helped. So many people have gone in different directions from this video I’m so happy it informed!! 👍🏼
This is one of those things that the fine scale modelers do well and that the miniature gaming world could learn from. I was a fine scale modeler long before I got into wargaming and I’ve always considered primer color before painting my little dudes because of that.
Like the video mentioned, I too always just thought it was a lazy aspect of miniature painters wanting to get armies on the table as fast as they can. I’m now wondering if it is a lack of awareness of such techniques. I often see miniature painters “discover” something like it is some brand new technique that never existed. I’m looking at you SlapChop enjoyers.
I’d encourage wargamers to explore fine scale modeler channels and even the model railroader channels. You can learn a lot from those folks and even learn techniques that they have been doing for decades. Techniques that should have been a thing long ago in this hobby.
I, like you, started as a scale modeller back in the 80s so brought much of the concepts over.
I think miniature painters got used to quick drying acrylics. There’s are a few things I didn’t continue as we scale modellers don’t tend to touch a model after it’s finished so anything that could rub off got dropped.
I've always said that model railroading and mini wargaming are basically the same hobby. You push your little guys around the board and either go "Choo Choo" or "Pew Pew".
Great video man! I like your multi color priming idea
Thanks mate! Much appreciated
when slapchop first started gaining traction i though i would lose my mid shouting at the screen every time "BlAcK is A tErRiBle cHoicE fOr A baSe!" ... glad i dont have to do that anymore.
I think it’s based on the old masters who used it for oil painting. But what is usually ignored is that they painted completely over it and only used it for a tonal guide.
@@thestateofplay2023 you're probably right. It was a common issue in illustration too. There's a ton of photoshop tutorials out there that start with black and white tonal sketches and almost all of them end up with a muddy-looking final product.

Please don't use normal rattle can paint. It has WAY more texture than specialised rattle can primer. The pigment isn't nearly as fine. And when you're painting something so small, you don't want large pigments. Obviously there is a place in this hobby for normal rattle can paint. But tiny models aren't it
👍🏼
So any model larger than an old scale space marine? A $5 can is still preferable to a $20 can for priming tanks if the difference is only noticeable if held at eye level under beginner level paint jobs
@giantninja9173 anything with small details I wouldn't use a normal rattle can primer on. Clogs them up.
Used Army Painter white primer today for 1st time and never going back to regular primer.

It's a 26 minute video and it's only been up 25 minutes!
Haha! Thanks, but give it time. I reckon people might be at work. I know I am. 😜
Yeah and after taking 36 days to make this to spray over a 1000 models I didn’t expect any UA-cam love from the algorithm. 😜🤣
@@ThorekIronbrow 😂😂😂
I’m not sure why but typing in “state of play” I didn’t even get you in my top results. It’s possible your channel name doesn’t help UA-cam/googles string matching due to the terms being so common.
That said, I do have confidence you will grow exponentially due to the sheer quality of your work.
Amazing video! You talk utter sense and deffo will be trying some of those menthods
I talk sense? Please explain this to my wife on my behalf. 🤣🤣🤣
"Brush on primer is like Star Wars the Acolyte."
You sir, are the hero this hour needs.
Ah not according to some comments but hey, I stand by my opinions. 👍🏼
@@thestateofplay2023 Who are these shills? Point them to me.
@@lcmiracle I am one of them, what are you gonna do bout it bud?
Hate me for liking the show more than the ungodly trilogy?
The only brush on prime that works is Vallejo black. Even then it still has a few problems every now and again.
Really good points made here, thanks for the tips and tricks. I've paint auto stuff and I'm just getting into miniatures
Wow. That’s two different ends of the spectrum in terms of scale and size. Have fun!!
@@thestateofplay2023 right, time to explore diff options since i have the tools. Miniatures are an art form of its own, Imo... both are respectable in thier own way.
Fantastic video - So much truth here. New to the hobby since 2020 and through trial and error coming to much of the same conclusions on priming. Now to get that airbrush.
Yeah I think I just help reinforce what many people don’t think out loud. I’m just louder about it. 😜🤣
@@thestateofplay2023 Well keep shouting!! Lots of great stuff to unpack here.
I am stuck with a question: when priming with a rattlecan, its mentioned spraypaint in different colors. Will any acrylic spraypaint do or does it have to say primer on the can? All I have been able to find in my local store was grey primer fir cars
This is an absolute masterclass not only in the topic at hand, but how all UA-cam videos should be done 👏🏻
Really?! Thank you. I’m humbled.
@@thestateofplay2023 concise but detailed, excellent humour, top notch production and awesome minis... What's not to love? 😅
This guys fantastic, and the interactions with the comments section are great too.
That’s because I read every comment because if people take the time to write - then I should take the time to….sorry, what was I saying? I bored myself to sleep. 🤣
I always love how you show so many tips and comparisons in one video! I feel the pull towards the airbrush… time to boot up your airbrush videos
🤣🤣 thanks mate! Always good to see you!
Great video man! Keep them coming.
They’re coming. Not as often as I’d like but I’m working on it
I always come back to your videos, because they give such great advice - be it color theory, airbrushing or even that awesome episode about books (like paper thingies...) thank you!
Ah paper. That old man media. 🤣
Great video! Really like your easy tofollow videos.
Oh man…I was aiming for high brow and complex. Another failure. 🤣🤣🤣😜👍🏼
subbed, I neither game nor paint. The sake of learning and the banter are good too.
Well I thank you for your sun. Maybe there’ll be something to my madness that peaks your hobby curiosity. 😜
Thank you for yet another video with excellent advice. I just recently dipped my toe in the water of color primer. I needed to paint 16 identical army troops and found a good camo green that both primed and served as the base coat for a large chunk of the minis. Also bought a dark blue primer to get a start on a similar lot of mobsters wearing dark suits. It was extremely helpful but this vfdeo opens up many more possibilities by adding a 2nd color to the mix. I'll definitely have to give that some thought even if my grasp of color theory isn't nearly as developed as yours.
Good option here is to pick up a lighter version of the camo green. 👍🏼
Thank you so much for this video. Your intricately detailed explanations have helped me understand painting concepts I've struggled with for a while. Definitely earned my sub, looking forward to more videos like this!
Glad it was helpful!
State of Play is a new favorite hobby channel now. I love the color theory, and I hadn't considered the orientation of the color wheel for 'movement' of color. This is awesome.
Yeah it’s weird that a simple lock of a colour wheel in place can change colour progression. I “lock” yellow at the top if zenithaling up to white. But often lock a shadow at the bottom. Or a different colour at the top depending on what I’m going for.
As a new to mini's painting hobbyist, this was VERY informative, thank you!
You’re welcome mate!
New to the hobby and this video has been super helpful!!
You’re very welcome
This is one of the best painting videos on YT right now, grats.
Thanks mate!
Really good video for someone new to painting
Thanks!
