If I did not know any better, I'd swear they must have reverse engineered some alien space craft to develop transmissions. Had no idea of their complexity. Mind boggling!

@@caseyj0731 My transmission has become terribly slow from a stop. I was stopped on a hill recently, and when I gassed it, it would barely move! As it went, it gradually built up momentum and bolted like normal. Otherwise, it can "jerk" when shifting from a slow speed to a higher gear if I am not careful. Despite draining about 7 quarts of old fluid, it STILL looks nasty on the dipstick. Its an off-grey color. At 300,000 miles, if it goes, it has had a respectable run at least. Is your transmission exhibiting strange behavior, similar to mine or different?

If you really think about it open minded its esentially just a differnt usage of a victorian gear based pocket watch. Wanna take it back futher? Its essentially just a evolution of the ancient roman astrolathe that ued brass gears to predict the movement of the planets. Men you are looking at thousands of years worth of tradition amd hearitage. Breathtaking isnt it...looking at the prodgony of rome?

My 19-year-old son's transmission just crapped out in his 2011 Impala, while upstate NY, visiting family. Had it towed to a shop on the 4th, 10 miles, for $417. depending on what they say, it might be getting junked up there. I refuse to cross 3K in a car maybe worth 3,500.

I definitely recommend a Trucool 40k Transmission Cooler as well, some might say its unnecessary but I have one and I love it, tbf I have an LS4 car but still the 4T65E gets hot in almost all of its applications and the cooler helps tremendously
Yes! Thank you for commenting this. A good cooler can make or break your repair. Like you said its not 100% necessary but it will definitely make the transmission last longer.
Does it ever cause rough shifts if you run that cooler? I heard that the torque converter doesn't lock correctly unless you're at operating temperatures. Mine is starting to rough shift because I've had the thermostat off and I'm just troubleshoot running it for now. I just replaced the head gasket and all that...... Now I'm gonna service my tranny, put the thermostat back in and see what she does. If she still acts up I'll replace solenoids. Hopefully that will keep her happy for awhile with light maintenance
In 2022 I had my 4t65e rebuilt by a company, it felt good, shifts a little more firm thanks to a shift kit they installed. The big thing I noticed is that if i come to a stop quickly, then try to go it jerks itself into gear as if it is stuck in between gears. It has done it only twice before I tuned the car(haven't had it happened again, but at the same time I haven't came to a stop that quickly either). When the trans originally failed, the car wouldn't move at all in drive, you can drop it to 1st and it would move, but slips like crazy, if you get it into second gear, it pulled good, same for 3rd and 4th, reverse was perfectly fine. Also, what would you recommend as a service interval for these trans(GM recommends 60k, but I heard 30k is more ideal).

how hard is it on the 4T65E when you neutral drop? Rev in neutral at govenor at 4000 rpm and throw in drive. Does it actually break anything or just wears the clutches? I imagine the transmission is rather stout and it would handle many times before anything becomes noticeable.
I also imagine this is akin to someone learning how to drive manual and keeps popping the clutch. Transmissions should have to handle a certain amount drive line shock.
I also notice throwing car in reverse while moving forward > 10 mph stalls the engine. It this a mechanical safety, or the reverse gear is overpowering the engine?
These transmissions are made of glass, even in a super stout factory transmission doing a neutral drop is insanely rough on the components

Good video for a 20 minute crash course. I done a handful of rear wheel drive transmissions and others in tractors and forklifts, but this will be my first fwd. Same stuff just in a little different arrangement.

I have a 2008 Lucerne and it takes a wild to shift from gear to gear what are your recommendations
Should I replace both band pins with a longer one, or just the 1, 2 band pin?
I’m starting to lose reverse on my 06 monte SS. All other gears are fine sometimes reverse will almost completely fade out and you’ll have to rev it up till like 3500 RPMs just to get it to move. I’m not leaking any fluid anywhere. Any ideas what the problem would be for mine? I’ve heard possibly a boost valve? This transmission only has 35,000 miles on it btw

High intensity forward band
Sonnax Updated TCC Apply valve
New EPC solenoid
and Sonnax Updated boost valve (Not always needed)
and of course a filter
What's the cost on a diagnosis and a repair like this? Not asking for Friend lol. Mine just went out on my 07 monte carlo lt flex

I have question about the input clutch,
I working with 4t65e, and I replacing the input drum, my old drum has like small metal welded I believe is for balace, my new drum don’t have the metal part, this is normal?

Hey Eddie excellent video am slipping only at take off. Shifts fine afterwards, not sure if it's solenoid or worn out clutch piston or torque converter. Can you point to what's possibly going on to narrow it. Needs rebuilding, but if solenoid will fix it that would save. Some have said might be forward band would be nice to rule out guess 👍 Thanks

I have the same symptoms. Car does not want to take off and slams into 1st when it does grab then shifts fine 1-4 and reverse are excellent.
Swear it feels like the converter is bad.
Yes forward band damage, however your symptoms 😢 point to possible solenoids also.

If electric cars can use motors that don't require a transmission then why can't we power those electric motors with a combustion engine? To hell with transmissions, they are always the reason I have to buy a new car. The job this guy is doing is around $5,000 for a 2010 Impala. Fuck that.

5K? Oh Lord! The car isn't worth 5K. My second oldest son has a 2011 Impala that is at a shop waiting for the price of a transmission rebuild. I am a former Mercedes Benz tech, but GM transmissions are not my thing. Might be getting a 2013-14 Impala with the 3.6L and 6 speed auto.
@@marcsmith3881 I was quoted 4 to $5,000 from AAMCO here in Virginia. That was for a rebuild.

@@LM77va We were just quoted $4,800 for a brand new transmission from GM with a 100K mile warranty.
i got him down a little to $4600 and it is a GM Reman transmission with a 100k warranty. I forget for how many years. 3 or 5 maybe we are less than thrilled, but getting it fixed in 2 weeks.
