That is exactly why I love Matt Reeves approach to this. He gets that the whole reason why Batman is such a complicated character is that the moment he begins to do something about the crime in his city, it inspired even worse, purer forms of crime and terrorism to blossom out of his existence. Like Joker, without Batman, none of this level of sadistic horror would have ever happened, Gotham would have just been swallowed by simple traditional organised gang crime. The second he started to force things to get better, everything got worse.
This is the only time a “we’re not so different you and I” speech has worked for me because it wasn’t belittling the protagonist, it was the antagonist adoring the protagonist which makes it all the more jarring and terrifying for the Batman and the audience

They fit perfectly together but riddler is far better written. Not in this movie but in riddler year one by paul dano. Fantastic comic and you see his horrific story like you said. The Joker in this universe, I doubt is as sympathetic as Arthur fleck.

First, he was abandoned by his parents, neglected in an orphanage with a high mortality rate, then when Thomas was murdered and the Renewal Fund was stolen, he saw that as Thomas and the city at large abandoning him. The media focusing on Bruce, the orphaned billionaire, over the poor orphans in the former Wayne Manor, was yet another abandonment, which is why Riddler accuses Bruce of stolen valor. Now, Batman, the masked vigilante who he idolized, who he believed approved of him, who he saw as a friend, abandoned him. Yes, Riddler is dangerous, but he also needs serious psychiatric help.

I always assume that all iterations of Riddlers(from Edward Nigma to Nashton) have an inkling, a whisper at the back of their neuraly condensed cortex, that the Batman and Bruce are one. He knew that Bruce and Batman are the same person, but his ego and his need to defeat the Batman, a person he views to have the same intellectual level as he, cannot accept that a sheltered trustfund kiddo like Bruce could be the Bats.
