The way Riddler cries "No, No, No!" and sings during his interrogation, is actually fairly accurate to real police interviews with mentally unstable killers. Once they feel like they've lost control, they resort to noise and confusion.

(SPOILERS) one thing i loved about this movie is that the riddler pretty much won, he killed a majority of the people he wanted to (minus bruce and rael), the sea wall came down, the people of gotham know about its corruption and he was locked in arkham asylum and we all know how good that place is at holding prisoners. it’s nice to see a competent villain and it makes sense considering this is year 2 batman who would probably be used to fighting muggers and not elaborate super villains
A lot of Batman media tends to portray Riddler as a somewhat above average bafoon who Batman can easily outmaneuver. But this movie takes the Ridder in a very different direction. What if Batman actually is outpaced by the Riddler's intelligence and plays into his hand? That's where we get the Batman.

What? Riddler cried like a baby at the end, it probably means that his plan failed.
@@cakebear9534 Because he thought Batman was his ally and he needed Batman on his side for his plans. Sure, the sea wall came down, but Batman saved many of the people in the chaos, including the new Mayor, and Batman will work to clean up the Riddler's mess.
That's villain smokescreen, the result of everything the Riddler did was make Batman look good and get the civilians to take a side and conglomerate.
And the biggest mistake is failing to convert Batman, making sure Bruce is corrupted.
Instead the Riddler just reinforced and validated Batman's position, definition of irony.
Some folks don't like it I understand, but I loved that they made riddler a serial killer and mimic the Zodiac from San Francisco. What an awesome outfit. The looming antagonistic threat through a serial killer is something I love when done right in movies and is a thing I wish to be good at when it comes to my writing. I really hope scarecrow appears in this universe.

I just love that they actually gave Falcone legitimate screen time and character. All the non super villain criminals just seem like nuisances in movies and shows. He legit held real power here, and could speak man to man with both Bruce and Batman all while maintaining a calm but menacing presence.

He had a decent amount of screentime in Batman Begins too. The scene with Bruce in that restaurant where he tells him how much he doesn't understand about criminals was chillingly good.

@@lapislazuli5035 Unfortunately that was about all his good screen time. He doesn't get to do anything else except get freaked out by Scarecrow after that. The super villains took over.
I like this Falcone not just for the character, but also because he seemed to have legitimate power. Nobody could get to him in his fortress, and he ran the city how he wanted it.
John Turturro really impressed me. His Falcone was way more intimidating than the Batman Begins version
@@whichDude Not only that, but he may have also been part of Court of Owls. Given how DA reacted to ratting him out I think it's not that huge of a stretch to think that he was a part of it.
This Riddler was the most demented, vile Riddler ever. This Batman film was excellent. Definitely buying on bluray.
The Riddler has always been a C list comical villain but this one made him look extremely scary and formidable I mean he won in a way and only got caught because he wanted too.

I'm assuming everyone in this comments watched the film already but to be clear: My comment contains spoilers.
I did not like the end plot. The movie was fantastic until the last Riddle. It should have been something that effects Batman personally and not just generic bombs. Something that is specifically aimed at Batman would have had a much bigger impact on a personal level. The ending like this was okay.
Also the Film could have been a bit more effective if it was rated R but that would've only been the cherry on top.

What makes this Riddler truly evil is the interrogation scene with Batman where Riddler basically tells him that he gave him the motivation to extract vengeance on those whom he felt deserved it, and that it's justified based on how Batman is going about fixing Gotham. He's a tragic character for sure, but more so a psychopath who uses brutal violence and sadistic acts to make people pay who he feels wronged him as an orphan kid. What a COLD villain.
He actually thought him and Batman were friends on the same side. He was shook when he didn’t like him.
I would have rooted for him if he only killed the corrupt authorities and Falcone instead of killing so many innocent people with the flood. That plus the fact that the ways he killed Colson and the corrupt cop were way too cruel. They weren't good people but it was too much.

Having a sad backstory doesn't make the villain sympathetic
@@joseluis5055 disagree. that’s definitely one of the main things writers use to make antagonists sympathetic to the audience. it helps us understand why they turned out they way they did and lets us know they’re not just intrinsically evil.
@@ellis7622 there's a difference between empathy and sympathy. You may feel empathy by a villain's backstory, but if their actions are too extreme that it outweighs their tragedy then they aren't sympathetic. If a character has a sad backstory and has relatable motivations then they are sympathetic.

@@joseluis5055 Oh my God. Having sympathy is easier than empathy. Most people don't even understand empathy (and you're looking like one of them). You can have sympathy for someone and still entirely condemn their horrible actions. Moreover the Riddler exposing a massive corruption wing and ensuring the major benefactors are punished could be seen as noble in intent even if the way he goes about it is wrong. That also makes him sympathetic.
The biggest character of this film for me was Gotham itself. It is only a city and yet it felt like it was alive and very sick with the corruption ozzing out of its very foundations and the people in that city were the cells that were slowly being corrupted by that society and Batman is one of a few people who are trying to save Gotham from the sickness that is corruption, violence and chaos.
This was also the case in "Joker". I love it just as much as "The Batman".

@@JustTooDamnHonest Yeah, the entire film is amazing. Maybe the Joker scene could have been left out, maybe the film could have been 20 to 40 minutes longer to dive even deeper into characters such as Alfred, Catwoman, Falcone, Gordon. But it's great as it is.
@@elfsieben1450 Yeah keeping the Joker scene out was the better choice. Because it would've overshadowed The Riddler. Do not get me wrong The Riddler is an interesting villain. But when you have Batman's arch-nemesis in anything then there is no winning because whenever Batman and Joker come to blows it is the ultimate between Order and Chaos and from what I saw Barry's Joker is the pure definition of madness.
Matt Reeves was smart to keep that scene out because The Riddler was the main focus and Matt gave him that chance in this film. But now that we have seen Barry's Joker we want to see what type of insanity will Barry's Joker inflect on a fledgling Dark Knight.
Honestly it felt like they took the Long Halloween from the Comics and put it in Live Action. A true decent Into madness Batman really didn't stop Riddler he just played Damage control.
The Long Halloween was like that Batmans realization that the City is deteriorating and Batman can't really stop it only contain it The villains are evolving to him becoming more menacing as the Years go on. I hope they can keep that feeling of Dread.
I love how riddler showed Batman that vengeance is not what Gotham needs. When Batman was confronting the riddler in his jail cell through a glass window i interpreted it as Batman looking into a mirror and seeing his own inner demons.
The riddler and Batman both share the same goal of justice and truth for Gotham, however while Batman gives people a chance of redemption and hope, the riddler’s anger and hatred overtake his motives and turns him from an Anti-hero to a villain
I really love how Matt Reeves reinvented the character and made him serious and terrifying. Imagine what he would do with villains such as Joker, Scarecrow or Mr. Freeze.

Honestly, Mr Freeze is impossible in my eyes. I'd be really impressed if some filmmaker ever works him into a gritty "real world"-like character.
One I'd love to see in Reeves' style is Poison Ivy, I can see a grounded take on her nowadays.
It's been implied that he'll work with Hush and Calendar Man but I think that'd be just a reinventing the wheel, how much more different from this film could the sequel get with villains like them? He should pick more underutilized ones (in film media) and that challenge Rob's Batman in fresh ways IMO.

Just a couple things: it's not clear if the Waynes were murdered by Falcone, and Riddler also intended to kill Bruce which you didn't mention. But still great video as always
Given Falcone owed his life to the Waynes, I kind of think Falcone perspective that murders were done by his rivals is his legitimate perspective. Because if Falcone kills the people who saves his life, who the hell would bail him out in his time of need?
Yeah I don’t think Falcons killed the Wayne’s. At the funeral that one random guy Bruce Wayne ran into that told him he looked familiar made me think it was Joe Chill the real killer.

It was just Alfred lying to himself to make himself feel better about Thomas...he himself says "maybe it was just some random thug who wanted money and got scared".
With Falcone dead, we'll never know, and I think that was part of the point, Bruce is Batman to save the city, not because he has to honor his father, who was part of the problem, just like he was by creating Riddler.

I love Riddler as more of a nuisance than a murderous mastermind, but he works so, so well in this film. The contrast between his vigilantism and Batman's, the barrage of riddles that I personally tried to solve as the movie ticked through, the clever word play, all the clues... it was perfectly executed and a beautiful mystery.

I'm genuinely surprised that someone managed to make a depiction of the fuckin' RIDDLER of all characters simultaneously both a legitimately good villain and a villain you can take seriously.
Definitely didn't hurt that rather than allowing the cops and Batman to catch him, solving his riddles only furthered his plans
The Riddler is far less of a joke than most people give hi credit for. He's supposed to be, most of the time, a character who gives Batman a genuine intellectual challenge, not a Joker knockoff.

I love that they stayed true to the Riddler's esence from the comics (him being a narcisst who wants attention and makes tantrums when things don't go his way, as well as being a bit goofy and over the top) while also giving him their own spin on the character, making him a serial killer and reimagining his outfit. I never thought I'd find a version of the Riddler this terrifying.

Dano was truly great in this, the first time in ages I've felt like someone appeared genuinely unwell, unpredictable and motivated by internal forces he can't control, not like an actor *acting* crazy.
*The point of view we got from Paul Dano's Riddler is that he thinks he's a Gotham vigilante (just like Batman). But both have different methods and rules. The fact of killing corrupt is acceptable, but going beyond the limits injuring and risking the lives of innocent people, he became a worse monster.*
This Riddler is what Arkham Origins touched upon, but didn't fully realize. Riddler is smart enough to read between the lines and drudge up dirt on anyone. In Arkham, it amounts to some trophies and lines of dialogue. In the Batman, it brings Gotham to the brink.
This was such a great film, the riddler and the messages of this film were really good and this shows the best of Batman being a detective. Would love to see more of Bruce’s development in the sequels
Batman as a detective yes but a smarter one cause batman had someone else solve to of the riddles with out them going out of their way to help

However, the film was really good overall. Plot could been less convoluted, some less than stellar dialogue choices, but the cinematography and style is excellent.
The acting, bar maybe the commissioner Gordon actor, was really good in general.
@@walterwang4669 I don't think there's any denying that the film looked good. It looked amazing, and I think Rob is the best Batman since Keaton. Gordon was good and the Batmobile was sick. I just hated everything else about the movie and would never consider it "very good."
I actually felt bad for the riddler when I heard his backstory. I'm not justifying his killing of innocents but it's not hard to understand what got him to the point of anger and insanity.
Yeah the first 90% of the movie the Riddler motives were “I will expose the corruption of politicians, police and mafia members and punish them for their sins”
Then the last 10% was “I will drown and kill every man, woman, and child in Gotham now!”

I’ve only seen the film twice so far, so in going off memory I might be relying on inference, but as far as I can recall Riddler thought that even with it’s top players taken out Gotham would still be inclined towards corruption, and though Belle came across as well intentioned she was just another Thomas Wayne to Riddler, someone making false promises.
The flood served a twofold purpose for Riddler; it caused enough chaos that would ideally distract law enforcement, enabling his followers to assassinate Belle more easily, and it would ensure that all of Gotham would experience the same despair Riddler experienced in his childhood.
This riddler felt even more dangerous then any joker we've seen. Its interesting to see someone like this character who (is also possibly on the spectrum) feels this scary in a batman movie. I look forward to joker in future batman films

The actor who plays the riddler in the film is actually making a comic about the riddlers origin so you should make an updated video on the riddler with more information from the comic.

I’m honestly just glad to see an great depiction of the Riddler. Since I think there’s so much potential for him as a villain, his obsessiveness, narcissism, genius intelligence without powers, but he seems to be overlooked quite a bit.
Part of the reason he'd been overlooked for so long when it comes to his appearances in the films was the very goofy and over-the-top portrayal of the character in Batman Forever. It did a lot of damage to the character's credibility in the eyes of many of the studio heads and filmmakers who would get the keys to the franchise; they were all too scared to touch him and/or had the impression that he was too similar to the Joker. Thankfully Matt Reeves was able to see all of the untapped potential that the Riddler would have in a film like this one.
When talking about vigilantism in cinema we often romanticize the good that one might do. And deplore that of an evil doer antagonist. Forgetting that both feel, in their own mind, justified by their actions.
To be a vigilante means to exist in the gray area between right and wrong. And both the vigilante and the villain often occupy this space.
Juxtapose Bruce Wayne's Batman against Edward Blake's Comedian and tell me which was worse. Now the Comedian against Arthur Fleck's Joker. And on and on it goes.
At least I get the impression the Jeffrey Dean Morgan
's Comedian would have been better equipped to deal with Health Ledger's Joker that "I have my one rule" Batman.

I mean if we put the flooding of Gotham aside. Riddlers plan was eerily similar to Harvey dent Gordon and Batman's plan for Gotham in TDK. Essentially aim the batman and at least one honest cop in the direction of criminals who were untouchable and force their crimes into the light usher meaningful change . Even the fact that this new politician is forced to bring legislative change because the corruption and devastation was unassailable is similar to how the jokers shenanigans ushered in the largely successful dent act.
The Comedian understood that he was just playing a hero, and that no amount of people in masks and capes will ever be able to "make the world a better place."
He knew that heroism is just a show, but that as long as he kept killing the "bad guys", he would always be the "good guy" in the eyes of the public.
To be pedantic, we actually don't know if Falcone had Tommy Wayne killed, which is what Alfred believes, or whether it was Maroni as Falcone claimed. I actually found that ambiguity to be a great element, keeping the mystery around the Waynes' deaths a mystery.
If what Falcone said is true about Thomas saving his life, then he probably didn’t kill him.
Imagine if Alfred killed him in this timeline lmao
@@tobysmith2081 he accidentally bumped into Thomas on the stairs and he fell down and died, landing on Martha and the weight of his body snapping her neck. Alfred dumped the bodies and blamed falcone ever since just to save his ass, but riddler was playing 5d chess and meant the bomb for alfred this whole time, he simply never told anyone because Alfred surviving was more embarrassing than getting the wrong guy. _Boom,_ I solved the mystery, you can send my awards in the mail now.

In a proper Batman story, there are a few mysteries Bruce should never solve: what is the Joker's real name and background, and of course who really killed his parents.
This movie has arguably the best rendition of Penguin to date.
I loved it when Bats and Gordon are interrogating him and he's being wise and when they leave, his hands and ankles are still taped up, so he starts waddling like a penguin.

This iteration of The Riddler is so terrefying because it feels so real...he is a guy who spents too much time on 4chan, but smart and crazy enough to actually do the things he claims "have to be done" in those forums.

It's absolutely buck wild, because right before I saw this movie, I had a midterm for a Criminal Law class that used a hypothetical of a downtrodden, angry man exacting revenge on a politician by firebombing her office after ranting online about how there needed to be blood in the streets for there to be real change.
To say the least, watching The Batman right after that was a surreal experience.
The difference between the riddler and the 4chan incels is the riddler has legitimate grievances and has legitimate reasons to be pissed off
Correction: The journalist Thomas Wayne inadvertently had Falcone murder was not Thomas Elliot (Hush) but Edward Elliot who is likely Thomas Elliot's father.
We will likely see Hush as a villain wanting revenge on Bruce because Bruce's father got his father killed.

The Riddler IS Hush. They merged the two together. They left his name ambiguous for a reason, and yeah they said his name is Ed but they didn't say Ed Nygma and they left his identity open. He talks about being alone in the orphanage while Bruce got all the attention. He wants revenge because Edward Elliot was killed. The Riddler is Thomas Elliot
@@babytextor You do know Nygma was never Riddler's actual last name right? His legal name is Edward Nashton. The only thing this interpretation of the Riddler has in common with Hush is the mask.
@@Drums_of_Liberation well, no, I clearly didn't know that, but regardless is it not likely that the studio wants to merge these two characters into one, especially given the recent animated movie's success with Riddler and Hush sort of merging in that film? Get more villains in that way without ruining Hush's storyline if they keep Riddler (as Hush) in it to learn that Batman is Bruce Wayne. The MCU does stuff like this all the time so I'm still confident that this Riddler is also going to function as this franchise's Hush.
I always thought Thomas Wayne's death was not by Falcone's hands as Alfred had said that he tried to find the murderer for years and guessed it was either a hit or it just was a random person who killed him, leaving the answer ambiguous. I believe this movie is still sticking to the origins where Batman's parents were killed by a random thug, not by one of Falcone's men.
I prefer the random thug than anything else. It goes to show that someone of great power like the Waynes were brought down by someone with nothing, who did it out of desperation. Because it’s One of the things that makes thugs do what they do.

this movie is about how when a good man with power makes a mistake, the ramifications are widespread. Thomas' decision to intimidate the journalist, led to his death, and therefore the corruption of the renewal fund.
You can still have the theme of the desperation, since it is certainly not Falcone or anyone important killing the Waynes. It is likely a low level thug. Just not a random thug.
The Batman restored my faith in blockbusters. Going through the film in my first sitting and coming to the realisation that Matt was maintaining a slower pace and weaving together such a clever plot was a delight. They could have easily done anything else but instead decided to make bold choices. What a film!
What I loved about the riddler in this movie is that 90% of his plans were successful and was in control the whole time. Even manipulating Batman to accomplish what he couldn’t. The only plan that failed was the one he had the least control of, and that was the shooting in the stadium and Bruce Wayne’s failed assassination attempt. All in all he succeeded in almost everything he set forth
The Riddler has always been one of Batman’s more comedic villains so massive props to this movie for making him believably and legitimately sinister.
This movie made John Turturro legitimately terrifying, it’s a masterpiece for that alone.

What I liked about this movie is that the level of corruption and decadence is absolutly more extreme and total than other versions, totally profound. While in versions like Nolan's the corruption was limited to police and judges, here the corruption in this film reaches even the highest political spheres of the city. And so it is that I am not surprised by the emergence of such a dangerous, psychotic and homicidal villain like Edward Nashton / The Riddler who at the same time was one of the many unfortunate victims of the aforementioned corruption that made his youth a hell and take the path of evil

I feel like the city of Gotham itself could have its own hour long episode on the channel. She is cruel and relentless, but most of all she cold and consistent. I absolutely love it, and Matt Reeves portrayal of it.
The comics have often made the suggestion that perhaps the city of Gotham really is cursed by sorcery. It has the highest wealth gap in the US, and both the richest and the poorest of its citizens seem to fall into a murderous insanity when they are wronged by someone much more easily than in other cities. A general net increase in flaring tempers.

The saddest thing about the riddler was that he was actually able to escape his circumstances. Coming from an underfunded orphanage and becoming a forensic accountant is a pretty impressive feat, and could have used it to live well and even do some good. Unfortunately, his trauma was too much to bear and he let it win, corrupting him to become a force of evil instead of a force of good
I think Robert Patterson did a fantastic job communicating just how destructive being batman was for Bruce. He looks perpetually exhausted, if not sickly from his work. And he's not some muscled Greek god like in most superhero films either. He looks like his body is a direct result of the job, rather than someone just training at the gym to get big. That kind of stuff combined with the grounded antagonist figures really helped my suspension of disbelief. This is by far the realest feeling batman yet, and even after so many of them I'm actually up for more.
As a lifelong Riddler fan who has always wished for a proper film adaptation you have no idea how happy I am seeing Edward get this much discussion and love.
What's so great about this film is it's very anti-Batman in a lot of ways, but still is true to the character. Show me other Bruce Wayne Batman stories where the Riddler isn't a goof who Batman can easily outsmart, where Thomas and Martha Wayne aren't the paragons of virtue Bruce believes them to be, where Batman gets called out for solving problems with nuclear cars and military equipment. None of these things are what most would consider characteristics of a mainstream, status quo Batman story.

During the movie, I was thinking about how during the Joker’s time in theaters in 2019. The media was saying it was going to spark incels and mass shootings. But when The Batman actually has an incel character that has amassed an online following that all meet up to kill people in a public setting. The media doesn’t say anything about it. Maybe because Joker really foreshadowed where Riddler came from a broken city system and try to be the emblem that was left behind.
One minor thing I did after seeing the film in theaters, loved it by the way, was compare and contrast Riddler with the Arthur Fleck Joker, because there are similarities, such as being children of abuse with mental health issues who feel discarded by the system and society. Also taking on personas of "who they are" in order to enact revenge, amassing a large group of followers, and both their stories involving Thomas Wayne. Though in Joker's case it was his mother believing him to be Arthur's father (which may be the case, given how trippy the film is), while a lot of Edward's problems and targets are created by Wayne's calling on Falcone and being murdered. Also, Edward cultivates his followers in order to unleash mass destruction, while Arthur doesn't really order them, mostly just using their anger to escape form the police several times. There's probably more but I thought it was interesting.
I like that they took John Doe, Jigsaw and the Zodiac Killer and combined them into the Riddler.

Truly never thought I’d get to have a Riddler depicted outside of animated series, and Paul Dano owned every minute his character was given. Such an amazing confrontation and mirroring of Batman’s rage and immature notions of justice that force him to become an actual hero and not just a vengeful specter. Such a stellar way to lean into Batman’s origins as a detective, real character growth, and a story that resonates with our own frustrations at an entrenched system. Great video!!
This film was amazing and this take on The Riddler was unbelievably disturbing.
A villain, representing evil, that must be covered is Nina Myers from “24.” She’s a sneaky and unlikely villain who surprises everyone on the series. She’s obviously a follower of that of Makiveli.

Videos like these are absolutely essential. Most people I know think hard-core criminals deserve torture, brutal deaths for the crimes they commit. That is Vengeance, not Justice. Justice is doing right by the victim, punishing the perpetrator but also doing right by the perpetrator by attempting to rehabilitate them. Videos like these make the layperson understand why the villains do what they do. It's not about excusing what these horrible people do. Riddler for example, is a scumbag. But he still a sentient being, every sentient being deserves to be understood. Understanding and the desire to do so, that will ultimately be our salvation. I come across as very self-righteous and I want to say, that I obviously have done wrong myself in my life. The key is to try be better though. And to never stop trying.
In many ways, that's Batman's arc here. Riddler thought he was vengeance too, look where that got him. In the Destiny franchise, there's an exchange where one character tells his apprentice that when you go after someone bad, do it because what they did was wrong, not because you were wronged.
Yes we all deserve a fair trial and even though the criminal justice system can seem flawed and unfair, it's better than hanging people in the street based on the irrationality of the herd. It's interesting, the hypocrisy of people, myself included, of course. Equality and justice for all, well except those people of course, they are monsters.
When I watched The Batman, I said to myself: "I hope The Vile Eye makes a video about the Riddler, it'd be great."

This riddler was written to be the Dark Shadow of the hero, and the two characters share a lot of parallels. They both suffered tragically from the same event, the murder of Thomas Wayne, and it set them on their respective paths. They are both intelligent and have a keen eye for puzzles, riddles and cryptography. They both keep journals detailing their missions, with the Riddler writing essentially his manifesto and Bruce detailing his "Gotham Project". Both characters act out of a shared trauma, though they do not realize it for most of the film. The mirror that the Riddler provides for Batman is his desire to achieve justice without the restraint of rules, which leads him to use killing as a tool to achieve his goals. Through his encounters with the Riddler, Bruce realizes that the path he is on leads to darkness whether he intends it or not and it inspires him to be more than just a vigilante. I really enjoyed this movie, flaws and all, and I hope that a sequel is in the works because I think the Dark Detective version of batman worked very well on screen. Also, I loved the scene where the batmobile is introduced
For me one of the best movie of batman in recent years, along with the dark knight this movie was fantastic 🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇. I was also surprised of the evil of Carmine Falcone, unlike many other versions of the characters who shows to have a honorable code or redeeming quality this version was a despicable monster and probably the most vile in the movie

Batman Forever's Riddler was no less demented but zany, wacky in the best way.
The Batman's Riddler brought back vibes of when I first watched Se7en, demonstrating just how demented a person's mind can be and rendered in such a way.

I love how Paul Dano looks as Riddler. Anyone who doesn't know Riddler as a character and went into this movie blind would expect him to be some insane psychopath but when he is without his mask, he just looks innocent and like anybody else. Similar thing they did in Hannibal where he doesn't look like some kind of monster that kills
The Batman also understands that fact along his journey.
At first he wants to become a warning to the criminals. Strike fear into their hearts, thinking it would deter them from their actions.
But we all know punishment alone isn't enough to stop crime.
And the Batman learnt that he needs to become more. More than just a crime fighting vigilante.
He became a beacon of hope when the people needed one.
This film is amazing and I'm excited to see what heights they can reach with this series.

Batman's rogue gallery is FINALLY represented in a proper film. We finally got a couple good villains that were not the Joker.

Me and my friends were talking about the riddler recently and i had to explain to them that the riddler isn't just a fictional character, it's a representation of a real type of people that have been responsible for real life violence (mass shootings, abuse, assault, etc.)
You making that plea to those who feel slighted by society and adding resources they can call for help, makes you the hero the people need.
Huge fan and I hope screenwriters examine your analysis in an effort to make great villains for generations to come.

This was a decent summary of the Riddler's backstory as presented in the film, and I can't deny that I was waiting for you to cover him, though I had hoped you might have focused on the individual instead of his surroundings, so as not to risk condoning him. Ultimately, upon reflection it is obvious that Edward's cardinal sin falls under the category of *envy;* he clearly idealizes but resents Bruce Wayne for a childhood that most of us would consider tragic, operating under the delusion that his own orphanage was somehow objectively worse despite its being a subjective experience. At times, it becomes obvious that on a subconscious level he recognizes that this is not at all the case, since he desires deeply to be treated as an equal to him and acknowledged as an equal *by* him, even coming to expect this as though it were an irrefutable fact on par with his otherwise thorough and admirably deduced research. Batman's rejection of this narcissistic self-identification underscores the central theme of the film: the significance of choice. While both Bruce and Edward were orphans, Batman became a symbol of hope and thereby helped fulfill his father's legacy of renewal, at first by vengeance and then by altruism, whereas the Riddler's vendetta against the guilty was both disproportionate to the villains and horrifying to the innocents. In the final consideration, Edward lost the sympathy he might have received from us for the alleged barbarity of his conditions, since he had become a conduit for that barbarity, whereas Bruce, with his idealistic crusade against these forces, remains the golden boy whom we adopt into our hearts. It's also why I hope someday to see your analysis of _Parasite,_ since the Parks deserve a proper burial and the Kims require a sufficient indictment, if only to serve as a reminder that class does not excuse narcissism, and poverty can never pardon murder.

I always looked up to Batman, from a very young age, for seeking vengeance for his family and finding justice in the process, and I could apply this pattern of success to other controversial heroes I admire, such as Light from _Death Note,_ Fring from _Breaking Bad,_ or Hamlet. One can hardly claim that one upholds morality whilst at the same time one refuses to participate in vengeance and its proper course, however highly one regards a legal system and utilitarian appeals. Revenge remains a classic obligation to oneself and to one's fellows, and I hope that any modern institution honours it as Shakespeare did, as MacIntyre does, etc. Batman gets his vengeance by participating in this plot; Falcone's dead, and Batman didn't even have to break his Rule. His arc is finished and the debt of blood is paid, so he is free to look to hope, for that's his moral obligation now. The Riddler, conversely, had nobody to avenge except himself, and so it is only himself whom he can blame; he is a feeble imitation, a deranged perversion of morality, and nothing more. *[({R.G.)}]*

I literally just came back from my third time watching this. Came home, took a shower, got on my computer and here this video is, waiting for me.
While Batman is very capable. Truth is that the riddlers plan, not only showed Bruce’s strengths, but more importantly his weaknesses. At first he wasn’t sure the riddler was in the wrong. But by the end he knows exactly where he stands, who he represent. It’s a great character study.

5:12 just wanted to say that he likely did develop ASPD as a result of his trauma, as ASPD commonly develops as a result from childhood trauma, in contrast to popular belief.
What I like about Riddler in this movie is that you can almost paint him as an antihero. Yes, he is a murderer but he doesn't kill just for the sake of it. His targets are the powerful, rich & corrupt. He realizes how tainted the city is and similarly to Batman he's doing "justice" in his own perspective. The main difference is Batman believes Gotham could be saved. Riddler does not. Therefore he wants to burn it all down so there's a chance to start afresh. Whether you agree with him or not he did more for the city than Batman did.

Buuut also Barry Keoghan is fantastic in that movie and the way he has transformed himself to play "Unnamed Arkham Prisoner" is excellent and I can't wait to see more of him.
I understand these things are subjective but it's really hard to grasp how anyone could say this was a bad film. It's just so god damn good in every way
I like how the movie hints in both subtle and obvious ways at Batman not being as experienced yet. He fights with anger and reckless abandon rather than control. First time he visits The Iceberg Lounge he just goes to the door and fights his way in, second time he infiltrates as Bruce and third time he is a little more sneaky about it. He doesn't look at clues past the surface level "what is it? A chisel?" "It's a murder weapon", took someone else to point out it was a carpeting tool. I hope we get to see him evolve into a more mature version of the character over the movies.
I think It would be interesting for your take on Gollum. I know his character has been covered to death but I still find his character super interesting. I think it would be interesting to get your opinion if Gollum was always ripe with evil, or the ring just brought out the bad aspects of his character.
If I recall correctly according to book canon he was at some point close to redemption but, due to Sam's hostility (can't blame him for it though), Gollum finally prevailed over what was once Smeagol. Maybe he had already some intrinsic negative traits before finding the ring, such as selfishness and addiction vulnerability. However, and just like a bad upbringing and environment do to most criminals or drug addicts in real life, the One Ring influence clearly worsened them and turned him into the wicked creature that would be known as Gollum. Let's remember that even individuals with strong morals and willpower like Bilbo and Frodo were eventually corrupted by it to the point they could react violently against their loved ones.
The movies were faithful to that aspect IMO and, in some scenes, it's clear that there's still some humanity left in Smeagol, which makes his final fall from grace and demise even more tragic.
The Riddler had good intentions as at first he wanted the people to realize how corrupted and messed up their politicians actually are, but quickly that feeling of justice and truth turned into revenge and then evil.
When he saw people feared him and others decided to treat him like their leader, his ego and selfishness got into him so he just wanted to cause chaos for no reason but to make people suffer just as he did in a peverse way of “revenge”

I had the chance to attend The Batman's premiere at the cinema, which I found an unbelievable movie. And although Paul Dano was the supporting actor, he was actually the movie's star. Moreover, I never thought that Bob Pattinson was going to play Batman's role, but he didn't disappoint anybody. So he amazed me as much as the whole cast, from Paul as the Riddler to Colin Farrell as Penguin.
The story of this movie was really similar to telltale batman with the family backstory with falcone and hill. The riddler equivalent is also screwed over by the waynes and has a similar motive. Kinda suspicious

That tends to undermine what little excuse he has for his actions, if killing people he decides deserve to die is more rewarding to him than a loving family
Hope that we see Harvey Dent next now there is no DA. Two-Face/Harvey Dent is such a great character who has so much potential. Nolan did such a great job with him and can see Reeves doing a great job too

I really like how he thinks he's doing good work by stopping corruption and he's partners with Batman only to get rejected.
His character has so much growth now.
Writers wrote the Riddler perfectly placing his narcissism and and egotistical feelings of intellectual superiority to the forefront. In fact ever character was written and portrayed by the actors perfectly. The writers and director knew their shit! And surprisingly even took some influences from the Batman Arkham games with the fight choreography. While the composer took a lot of inspiration from Danny Elfman’s score from Batman Returns. I also really like that his was almost a crime noir thriller and how much this movie reminded me of Se7en. I loved everything about this movie. It’s on par with The Dark Knight.

Another sweet pick. I like how you've been analyzing the film as a whole as opposed to specific characters. I'd love to see "the watchmen" I think it might end up being one of the longest videos you might do because nearly everyone in that movie is morally questionable.
With the Riddler, I like how they changed his look to something like the Zodiac Killer. Not only it conceals his identity, but it evokes the look of an executioner, which fits as he’s taking it upon himself to dole out punishments to those he deems wicked. With his killing of Mayor Don Mitchell, he incapacitates him with a tucker, representing how he’s going to expose the dirty secrets swept under the rug, and represents his working-class background. He also cuts off the mayor’s thumb, so he can’t keep anything under it anymore, and suffocates him by covering his face with duct tape, so he can’t lie, let alone speak. He has “No more lies” written in blood over his victim’s face and walls, and by covering Mitchell’s face, he’s symbolically removing the face of corruption.
For Commissioner Pete Savage, he’s caged up like a criminal, which is who he’s supposed to protect the public from. Hungry rats are put in the cage to eat him, with the rats representing the corrupt officials (i.e. Savage himself) eating away at the flesh of Gotham, and Savage is poisoned with arsenic so that both he and the rats will die, representing how the Riddler is going to rid the corrupt. It also represents how the corrupt are ingesting more and more poison by continuing to steal from everyone else. The rats are the criminals he let get away, and how they’ll bite him in the end, as imprisoned cops tend to find themselves at the mercy of vengeful criminals. As for District Attorney Gil Colson, he is publicly put on trial, with a predetermined death sentence and already found guilty, as DA Colson knowingly helped criminals escape justice.
Colson is forced to confess to denying justice, how much money he is bribed, and who he’s accepting bribes for. The method of execution (explosive collar) represents how he is going to spill the beans. For Bruce Wayne, he is gifted a bomb, because he spends most of his time in his tower, and while Riddler’s clues are a token of friendship to Batman, he doesn’t know that Batman and Bruce Wayne are one and the same, and the bomb represents how Riddler feels like Bruce’s old money makes him unworthy of being called an orphan. The bomb doesn’t work, as Bruce isn’t corrupt. Next is Don Carmine Falcone, who he requests be brought into the light, with the reach of his sphere of influence exposed, before sniping him as unceremoniously as an low-level thug walking into enemy territory.
And when Falcone was in the light under a streetlight. Also, Riddler calls Falcone “el rata alada”, or “the winged rat”, and rifles are the best weapon for hunting winged creatures. As for Mayor Bella Reál and Gotham, Riddler floods the city, considering it too corrupt to save, and flooding the rat’s nest, a common pest control tactic. He targets Reál specifically because he’s become so disillusioned with people promising change for Gotham, only to be unwilling to (or unable to) that he sees its destruction as the only way forwards. This fails as the majority of Gothamites are honest, and so is their new mayor.
If you’re planning on doing a film on vigilantism, would you please include Edmond Dantes from The Count of Monte Cristo Novel? That or his appearance in the anime: Gankatsuou The Count of Monte Cristo, they both portrait one of the most morally grey characters that I think could exist in fiction and I think should be considered vigilantes
I would love an episode on The Punisher, John Bernthal's portrayal specifically in the 2 seasons of the formerly Netflix, now Disney series. Especially because that Daredevil and Punisher are coming back for a new team up in the new Daredevil season.
Perfection, I JUST watched this today. Such an incredibly well done film, and holy crap was the villain confusing. In a good way.
I personally feel like this film can be seen as a fantastic commentary on the concept of evil, favouring 'nature' over 'nurture' in that debate.
I personally feel like the interrogation scene was an homage to the final scene in "High and Low". In both scenes the glass casing separating the two has ghostly reflections superimposed over each character, suggesting that each is a mirror image of the other. Great film, and definitely one with similarities (downtrodden nobody seeks revenge on the wealthy, leads police on a deadly hunt using lots of detective work, antagonist wins the battle but not the hero's soul).
I LOVED the movie , it was dark , terrifying , the tone & mood of the Batman was satisfying.. reason that is ... the riddler was a good choice & great villainous character study as well as the plot he had in stored for those that wrong him. I can clearly understand when a person need help & support & nurtured.. and doesn’t get it, instead he left vulnerable & gets abused & damaged to a degree that affects him to where he’s blaming society for the outcome & they either put it under the rug or to scapegoat blame THE INDIVIDUAL & DENY that they mistreated him & don’t care what happens to him until he decides to unleash his anger out & kills people because of what’s done to him. It’s a good mystery that mature audiences can enjoy & educate themselves on the subject.... being that the Batman is a comic book superhero... I feel they bring THE COURT OF OWLS... I would like to see a retake on MR. FREEZE... good analysis... keep it going

This film is great, but it's such a missed opportunity to create a masterpiece. If Riddler had intended to kill Mayor Real instead of orchestrate a mass act of killing that turned him from a vigilante to monster, he could have been arguably a full on heroic figure forcing Batman to question if his no kill rule was holding him back (the deleted scene with the Joker makes this quandary into a clearer focus of the film.) Having Batman seriously question if killing was justified and that he wasn't doing enough, but then once he finally talked to Mayor Real realizing that, actually, his vigilantism was a total waste of his money that actually distracted him for his whole adult life from the abuse of his father's Renewal system, he could have chosen to give Mayor Real and charity a chance, and reject the Riddler's ideology on an intellectual level instead of being forced to reject it because it was perverted by the choice to make him a mass killer.
Instead of being tempted by the "dark side" that is extrajudicial killing but ultimately turned away from it by external forces, Batman could have chosen between two legitimate options, lethal vengeance and hopeful charity, and chosen the latter because he believed in the future Mayor Real and a purified Renewal program could bring.
(Which, yes, would be Batman choosing democratic socialism over alternative right populism, which is what the film actually espouses but does a poor job of conveying by making the alt-right Riddler too morally black)
Loved it. I had been hoping you would do your typical and do a deep dive into their psyche, me and a friend have been discussing whether the Riddler is afflicted with obsessive compulsive thinking or borderline personality disorder, and that would have been neat. Still, another great video.
The Riddler by far is the best antagonist ever from a 2022 film, also nice vid man
