Made one similar a couple of years back. Tip - keep the hole cut outs they make great wheels for wooden toys for the grandkids.

Thank you for the video. Made mine today. Was able to fit 17 rods spaced 4 inches apart on a 6 foot board. Looks awesome and happy with the results. Good father/son project for us.

Imagine a world where all the know it all’s and people who constantly critique people actually were productive and made their version to help instead of ACTING superior behind a computer. 👍

i inherited several rods when my father past a few yrs ago. they were just stacked up on a shelf. Yesterday I built your holder based on your plans. turned out great and I can preserve his rods forever now. thank you for the tutorial and the plans.

"I'm not a carpenter, guys, I'm a fisherman." I love the honesty and down to earth-ness.
I am in the middle of making one of these as well and am excited to finally get the rods put up. Thank you for the project and the reassurance that fellow non-carpenters can make one as well.

Super cool and I will be making one for my man cave. In the future, measure 1 3/4 from the edge for your center mark. A 1x4 is actually 3 1/2" not 4". Good vid.

at 2" centers they are actually offset to 1 side and if hung the right way they allow more clearance down from the ceiling.

I made mine 48 inches long. I allowed 3/4" on the starting end. I got 12 holes because I went every 3 inches from the outside of the circle. I used my adjustable T square and put that on the outer most edge of the circle and made a 45 degree angle line and then I drew the line on the opposite end. No need to measure an inch. Came out beautiful. Thanks for the video.

This was exactly what I was looking for, thanks so much for making this video. I mounted mine on the wall so I cut all of the jig saw cuts in the same direction which worked out all. I think if I were to do it over again I would make them larger, maybe 6 feet to hold more rods.

I now have made 3 sets of these. Much better than the saggy Berkeley strap system I have used for 20 years.
These look much neater hanging in my basement and are easier to load rods in and out. I have room for 11 rods in each unit, a bit more that what I need but always room to grow a bit.

Great video I will be storing some of my rod's this way. Personally I'd mark all holes first. Put your drill in lower speed (1) drilling mode. You may find it easier to pre-drill the holes before you use a "hole saw". Finish edge with a router (if you own one) and for your slots I would just of turned the level on its edge to mark both lines. I probably sound criticizing, I don't mean it to be, just trying to help others, Take care Tight lines,
    p.s. I'm a Carpenter "and" a Fisher. ;)

great video......I followed your instructions to a tee. The only thing I added was a third rail....the rods I have are about 7 feet, so when i set up the rack my rods would bow, the third rack solved the problem.

    • @Saltyscales
      @Saltyscales  7 років тому

I'm glad it worked for you Leo If you place the two pieces closer together it will prevent the bend, some of my rods are 8 feet in length.

Joshua, Great work and very informative! One thing I would like to add is when measuring to install the brackets on the wall/ceiling use your shortest rod/reel set for a guide. Someone (me) may have rushed to install this setup and spread the brackets to far apart and the shorter rods would not fit! haha

I would of marked 2 in on both ends and snapped a chalk line and then ran the tape the length of the boards and marked every 4 in. 4, 8, 12, etc. Little easier than sticking the tape in the center of the hole haha. Good shit though nonetheless. Will be doing this tomorrow.

I saw something you could do on your holes to keep them from having so many splinters. When you drill your holes, once the drill bit goes through the wood turn it over and drill the other side to the center. This will keep the outside of the board from splintering. What store did you get that can of paint from?

shouldve built a square frame and then put hinges on one end and a slide lock on the other. when you want a rod you unlock it and lower it down. same concept as an attic door in the ceiling. it beats reaching up and sliding the rods out trying not to hit the guides.
