I once red a quote that said: perfectionism is not wanting everything to be perfectly good, but being very good at looking for reasons why everything is not good enough. And boy, as a fellow perfectionist, this is so true it hurts. I agree with what you're saying: the only way to get better style is trying, and don't getting caught in comparison with others. A thing that helps me when I think my outfit sucks or is not polished as "it should be" is remembering all the time, takes, effort and editing behind few perfect photos when I was modeling for some shoots at my beauty school. And most of the time other people don't really care as long as I'm not naked in publics settings, which helps to lower the stress 😂
Absolutely true with perfectionism! And, yes the wonderful part of style is on a day-to-day scale one outfit doesn't break your progress. You might like this new article all about style goals, I discuss some of this: gabriellearruda.com/style-goals-measuring-and-achieving-your-dream-personal-style/
Love this! The idea that there is “one right outfit” is totally crippling creatively. Outfits aren’t pass/fail. I’ve been trying to shift my thought process to what I feel about the outfit (naming literal feelings), rather than “does this work?”/ “is this right?” I enjoyed the “dream wardrobe” video too. I subconsciously attach stories to other people’s outfits and Ive been working on making those stories more conscious. Sometimes I like to take a moment “disassociate” from myself, to see what this outfit looks like without all my baked in feelings/preconceived notions.
Yes definitely NOT "one right outfit", but there is one right personal answer... and that's more of a feeling if it's expressing you. And this one personal answer evolves imo! And I think this leads really well into our fantasy/dream styles. I love that you build stories around outfits, that's such a fun way to tap into the roots of the outfit and the reasoning behind it.
This is so funny. I am around 12 min and you say: start taking daily photos and I say ( in my head) I need to clean that mirror (all pics come out with spots on the mirror) and the background of my garage where I put my shoes on and ready to take a picture is depressing so I need to make that better. Then you go….. “ better mirror, lighting …“ ahahahaha🤣🤣🤣😃😃
As a grant writer, I love your focus on SMART goals! I've taken a first try at a yearly style goal (thanks to your workbook) but hadn't ever really incorporated my own training in goal writing! I am already collecting measurable data (daily outfit photos, also thanks to you), and now I'm seeing where I can get more specific, reasonable, and achievable with my seasonal and yearly goals. And ultimately, that will help me be more gentle with myself. Also, that table is fascinating!
I'm so excited to hear this! I hope you're enjoying the workbook and your SMART goals help you bring it all to life! Totally agree, I find Delongs work extremely fascinating and I really enjoyed the results of that study
I’m such a big fan of your essence series. I have been an avidly watching your long form videos they are so helpful and entertaining I can see the hard work and research you put into what you do. I’m loving the podcast format so please keep it going! Lots of support for this channel 💐💖
Great advice! I also enjoy having actual scientific studies tied into style theory! Even though it's an art and everything is subjective, there is a science behind it 😊
I'm so glad to hear you like it! I like hearing the why behind some of the actions we take, it helps remind us of the process to create our own style is maleable
You have no idea how excited I am you started this podcast! A couple weeks ago I was looking for a podcast to get into and I literally thought, "man, I wish Gabrielle would make a style podcast" I just love the way you think!

Your scientific mind is just fantastic. I am so impressed with your inferences of the data. And I am a PhD scientist I know.
Great podcast!!!
This put a smile on my face, thank you so much!

hey, you were on Project Runway! I loved watching that! (I stopped watching around 2008, or maybe it wasn’t aired in my country)

Haha! It's easy to think about that thought process when you've lived it (which I definitely have)
